The first show I headed off to was for VPL, which was held at Chelsea Piers, and I went along with the Beauty.com team. It’s amazing how much time it takes to prepare all of the models before the show can actually start. You see manicurists on their knees trying to get the model’s nails done in a couple of minutes, while a hair stylist or makeup artist is maneuvering around them to complete hair/makeup.
Phyto (products) and Amika (tools) did hair for Beauty.com, while Butter London did nails for Beauty.com. The hair was slicked back for that “just out of the shower” look (I didn’t know that could be a trend–will make my life easier!). Everyone kept the hair nets and towels in their hair until the very last possible moment. Nonie from Butter London went with one coat of Butter London’s Nail Foundation as a base coat topped with Tea with the Queen, a nude shade, on top. She advised that a base coat is imperative when doing nude nails, because many nudes are prone to streaking without one.
Cle de Peau was responsible for the makeup look at the show, which was a very neutral, subdued look. They used new-for-spring (2012!) products for the look. They used #208 Eye Color Quad, which is filled with bronzy shades, on the eyes with #12 Gold Luminizing Face Enhancer on the cheeks to highlight. For lips, they used #206 Sweete Watermelon Enriched Lip Luminizer (which is a new formula and will be available with refills).

Is it just me, or did the models’ makeup make them look much older and tired somehow? D:
I don’t know what role the makeup played (no before/after shots!), but a lot of models look tired because they ARE tired. Imagine jetting around from country to country (time zone to time zone) for different shoots and fashion weeks. (Not to mention how hungry they must be all the time.)
The models are in fact older! I remember them from the 1990s. Danielle Zinaich, the black-haired model in the first photo was born in 1973. I can’t recall the name of the model she is posing with, but do remember that she was very popular in 1998-2000.

I agree. I don’t think that it’s the makeup in particular – more like the lack thereof. They aren’t wearing enough to fully conceal those things in the first place. But this is a fashion show, right? Which means this is about on par with other fashion show makeup looks. It’s not about the makeup and hair – it’s about the clothes. The model is supposed to disappear into the background.
Your pics are so clear and crisp! I know you shoot with the D90, but what lens or lenses are you using? 🙂
I use the D3s now and I’m using the 28-300mm lens.

Those first BL shades look less like nail polish and more like bottles of foundation!

Lucky you. Is that woman smoking in the 5th picture? EEWWWW! I wouldnt want her touching my nails. The other woman on the same picture has a pose like Michelle Obama. Yes, and I like your photos…no touch ups, no photoshop etc….all real. You can see every pore, every imperfection, every wrinkle on her face. That is reality….not those altered pics we see in magazines.

First picture was so fun! First I was like, “ooh, peasant type makeup” then I looked more closely and it was actually kinda glamorous!
It’s rare that a posts comments actually upset me. These are not promotional images but real untouched photos of models. If anything people should be embracing the reality. Christine I applaud you for these beautiful images. People scream about the unrealistic promotional images companies such as Lancome use, but when they see reality they feel the need to tear apart the models. Why do you think these companies use such young models and intense photo editing? Because people don’t embrace reality and all it’s unique imperfections.
Do you know what the peach-nude color the model is wearing in the middle pictures is? It’s lovely and looks close to “Hangin’ Loose” from MAC’s Surf Baby collection. Since that was LE, it would be cool to have another option for the same color!
It looks like it might be “Yummy Mummy” (from the Butter London swatches on their website).

It looks really peachy and light on her fingers. On mine it is rather a soft pinky light brown.
