I feel so torn about this one! After seeing the initial sneak-peeks I had convinced myself to pass on it (the colour selection seemed half boring and half completely impractical), but after seeing Kat Von D’s swatch video the other day it’s back on my wishlist. The colours look more interesting than I had originally thought and they appeared to swatch like a dream even with the brush! More eyeshadow is the last thing I need, but between this and the holiday Marc Jacobs palette I might need to find some extra space in my stash 😛
This might be a tough question at this point but based on first impressions, if you had to choose between this and the MJ No. 20 holiday 2017 palette which would you go for?
That swatch video really did sell it for me, too, the swatches read much more unique than the shades in the pan. Granted, I know that video was shot to sell them in the best possible fashion, but even accounting for that they did look really nice.
I agree with this, a lot of the shades in this looked really boring but after seeing them swatched, I am really wanting to get this too,
I probably would go for the MJ pAlette. He’s a favorite of mine. I have a lot of the highliners, the dew drops and one palette and the quality is superb. But $99 is painful! Ouch!
It’s a pass for me, not because I think the quality is poor but the shades feel like other holiday palettes that had come out. But if it included the Metal Crush formula eyeshadows I would go for it.
I keep waffling on this one.
I like the look of the left side, but the right doesn’t wow me. I’ve never purchased anything from her line and I don’t think this will push me over the edge.
Yep, same.
I just cannot see myself getting this one. Already have far too many palettes, for one thing. And the shape itself is very impractical for storing. More than that, however, is the symbolism and shade names.
I totally agree with you about the shade names and symbolism Nancy. I will not be purchasing. These could be unicorn shadows and it would still be a hard no for me.
I agree Nancy T. I like some of the colors. The shade names and symbolism make this a no way purchase!!
I’m curious; what is it about the symbolism and shade names that makes this a no-purchase for several of you? I love the packaging and find it very unique. I’m not one for shimmer eye shadow but I will absolutely be purchasing it strictly for the package design, symbolism and shade names.
Everyone is Most Certainly Entitled to their Feelings, Opinions, Beliefs, etc. As a Non Religious Person (Agnostic) Nothing about this Palette, Shade Names, or ‘Symbolism’ Bothers me. Honestly, I find it Very Intriguing. This is, In No Way, ‘Blasphemous’ or Anti-Christian, or Whatever it may Appear to Some on the Surface. If you Stop and Actually think about it for a Minute, Kat is Merely Using the Very Dualistic Nature of Everything, Including People, as an Inspiration to this Palette. The Universe itself and everything in in, (Including us as Human Beings) are all Multifaceted and, in a Way, ‘Dual’ by Nature. Although I don’t believe in ‘Sin’ necessarily, In a Sense, We are all have a ‘Light’ side about us, and we all have a ‘Dark’ side about us. There is Day, and there is Night. The Sun, and The Moon. There is Birth, and There is Death. There is Infancy, and There is Senility. We are all ‘Saints,’ and We are all ‘Sinners.’ Personally, I find it to be a Very Real part of Nature and Our Nature as Humans and I think it’s Beautiful and a Very Creative, Beautiful Theme and Way of Constructing a Palette. It is also, in a way, Making a bit of a Statement that we all have these Ideas and Concepts that we Associate with what is ‘Good'(Saint/Day/Lighter, Softer Colors) and what is ‘Evil’/Bad (Sinner/Night/Darker, Intense Colors) It’s also Very Creative and Inspired if you DO look at it in a Religious Sense, Because Religion is ALSO very Dualistic. There is No Religion with only the ‘Good’, The Light, The Day…Because One Must have The ‘Evil’, The Bad, The Dark, The Night to Recognize the ‘Good.’ Personally, I find it a little Silly to Ignore the ‘Dark’ and Pretend that it Doesn’t Exist, When it Very Clearly DOES Exist. We are not Children. We are Adults and People almost act as if they Ignore the ‘Darkness’ then it will Go Away and It’s almost Pretentious and Hypocritical to Pretend that We don’t have a Dark/’Sinner’ side to us, Because we ALL do. We all have ‘Dark’ thoughts and ‘Negative’ Feelings even though None of it is Truly ‘Negative’, it All makes One Whole Being. The Yin and the Yang. I know that’s a little ‘Deep’ and Maybe Controversial for Eyeshadow…But Kat is very Deep and Creative and all of her Concepts are Intentional and they are not ‘Bad’ or ‘Evil’ they are Pulled from Real Life.
Jarediah: I enjoyed reading your interesting and thought-provoking post.
Totally agree with Cynthia. I enjoyed very much reading Jarediah’s reply to the “symbolism” issue some have with this. The duality aspect is central to so many of humanity’s spiritual paths, so I don’t understand the aversion to a dark/light theme. I feel like due to Kat Von D herself wearing lots of black clothing & having tattoos, people read dark & Satanic into everything she does, which is sad.
Different perspective: for me, as a Catholic, I am REALLY looking forward to owning this palette so I can gaze at something each morning that harkens to the stained glass windows which are so much a part of the beauty of my church. I have such profound happy memories of the colored light shining down on my children & friends as we sit or stand in the pews; or of day-dreamily gazing at those glowing, shimmering colors when my mind wanders during mass, and then being brought back to worship by a song or ritual. The palette’s physical design (stained glass) connects me to the feeling of peace & beauty I receive during worship.
For me, this palette is encouraging, because a lot of the gorgeous churches & cathedrals of Europe (with their awe-inspiring windows) are no longer filled with worshipers; sadly the artistry in those walls has fallen by the wayside. How very cool of Kat Von D to put a modern, utilitarian (we do *use* the eyeshadow!) spotlight back on these beautiful art forms, while acknowledging in the color names the Christian origin of those windows.
Lastly, the shade names: what is offensive (and I’m assuming by offensive, non-Christian) about them? For the more “controversial” names..umm, the “devil” is mentioned in church! Christian saints have had “stigmata.” “Ashes” as a concept, as a word, and also actual literal ashes, is very Christian (Christian burial “ashes to ashes, dust to dust”; Ash Wednesday). The other names: Heaven. Worship. Baptism..I don’t get what is offensive about these words. And “Ministry,” isn’t that a very Christian term? SMH.
I think Kat was inspired by the beauty of cathedrals, the duality of Christianity, and chose to really pull that inspiration from the pageantry & worship of Catholicism. I’m complimented, not co-opted. Artists find inspiration in the world around them. Yes, the Alchemy palette could be interpreted as referencing “Satanic” beliefs (triangle shape, alchemy), but I think even that was with a wink, not serious. But this palette, come on. It is celebrating stained glass with names like “Amen” and “Heaven”! FYI – Kat’s parents were missionaries. She was raised with A LOT of religion. Of course she is going to turn to that background. I think it is COMPLETELY anti-occult, and further is celebrating Christianity (just as previous palette’s celebrated the Ancient Egypt, or the Pastel Goth subculture).
So, there is makeup I will NOT buy because of names/symbolism (which is on me, I don’t expect anyone else to do the same) & it’s names that celebrate drug culture/addiction or are VERY crudely sexual [all NON KVD, by the way]: Backdoor for a brown lipstick, Double Team, Crank, Kush, Mainline, Bender, and so on. I feel kind of hurt by people saying NO to this palette for the “Symbolism.” Do you, as fellow Christians of another denomination, view my Catholic faith, our practices & our history, as in the same thread that I view an exploitative celebration of drug culture & graphic sexual terms (a reason for a no-buy)? Is my faith that offensive to you? Hurt.
I can offer a thought, but can’t say this is why others have said they won’t purchase due to the shade names and symbolism as there are certainly many reasons someone might say that, including the exact opposite of what I’ll share . . .
For some, using these words and this symbolism for something so . . . material? Worldly? Unattached to their actual meanings? . . . may feel uncomfortable and as if it’s flippant toward something that has deep, personal meaning to them. The words can seem ‘reduced’ to something far less meaningful than what these words mean to some people.
Also, some names could seem to ‘glorify’ some negative or specific things that people feel shouldn’t be used in this way. (Same as some have said for a long time about UD names – – regardless of intent, and even though their brand name indicates the shade names represent the ‘decay’ of society, glorifying such themes rub some people the wrong way.)
I understand that those who feel that’s silly might not understand, but everyone has had different experiences and has different perspectives, so an open mind on such a thing is helpful to try to see and respect the existence of another’s point of view.
Just my .02 . . . keep the change. <3
Thank you for your reply. I hadn’t really thought through that angle (that it is not right to make materialistic stuff out of someone’s faith). Thanks, you made me think & re-evaluate; always a good thing. Still, though, I think for a lot of people “Symbolism” is code for occult, & I do believe that there’s a lot of people out there who assume everything KVD is all devil-woship & such.
I can appreciate that the shade names and symbolism could be problematic for some (most of my family would feel the same way), but they’re all very abstract to me and a lot of people like me. I don’t necessarily want people to be put-off or offended by stuff like this, but I’m rather glad that the market allows for this kind of … irreverence? Not sure that word captures what I’m thinking.
I think I had to learn to shrug off other people’s reactions to shade names after I started buying NARS products years ago and had to explain Deep Throat to my grandparents. ?
Oof. No thanks. On the other hand, I have a lipgloss called “Blood Of My Enemies” which I have no problem wearing, but I’m too embarrassed to use the CP eyeshadow called “Boy Band” because I dread someone asking me what the name is. Where I came from, we didn’t do New Kids On the Block, we did Slayer and Metallica. “Deep Throat” — no problem. “Unicorn Tears” … [shudder]. 🙂
Are we the same person?
Also theres a shade in here called Exodus..I choosr see it more as the name of my favourite thrash metal band.
Ugh. I can’t shake the grandparent thing. I can be “hard” all day, every day with pretty much everybody, but you stick me in front of my grandma …
Still wouldn’t want to tell her I’m wearing an eyeshadow called “Boy Band” though. 😉
That is cool looking! Love the cathedral/stained glass design..oooooh:D. There is an old cathedral in a town not too far away from me that is from the later 1800s and it is super cool to see. As for the colors in this palette..I can see several won’t probably work for me but will wait for the swatchies.
Typo: “Soary” in the list of shades needs to be corrected to “Rosary.”
I really hope it has good reviews! I find it hard to believe they swatch as well as they did on her YouTube reveal. But here’s fingers crossed!!!
After watching that video several times I found that there was a lot of editing and some of the swatches were already on her arm before the brush hit the skin, so I swatched all of my Kat von D shadows with a brush and there is no way those swatches came from a brush, unless the formula is completely different.
Mine just arrived. Oh my gosh, the shades are all GORGEOUS and pigmented! I’ve already done a few easy looks to try it out. Several are shades I do not have (which is surprising – I love eyeshadow & thought I’d covers most shades). The quality reminds me of KVD Metal Matte. Very pigmented, very blendable (by my standards, I’m no Temptalia). So thrilled with this purchase!
I am definitely getting this one. None of her palettes have let me down so far, and this one looks amazing.
I am not sure about this one. The shape does not appear to be storage friendly. I haven’t seen the announcement video so will have to go look at that but right now, I am leaning towards a pass on this palette. I have to limit my palette purchases this season as I am running out of space, LOL. I will do a purge soon so that I can accommodate a few more but need to pick the best of the best.
It’s not to big. I was worried about bulkiness, but it’s not to bad. The Metal Matte was way bigger (and I find it not using it so much). For what it is, it’s kind of…trim? Colors are so beautiful.
I think some of these colors are really cool and look like great quality, but the palette as a whole doesn’t seem cohesive, and has only one transition shade as far as I can tell. Don’t think I’ll be splashing out on this one.
I am pretty in love with the colors of this and was wowed by the video. But looking through I feel like I would have to reach for another palette for some matte transition shades, which at this size seems weird. I’m not sure, I’ll wait for the swatches I think….
Easy pass for me. Not convenient shape/size to store or use. A jumble of shades. I am just worn out by all of the makeup that is reimagined every holiday waiting for me to pull out my credit card. Feeling jaded…Sigh…
…can I just have the left half?? ??♀️
It does remind me a bit of the most recently-reviewed Marc Jacobs palette, but without the ridiculous price-per-ounce ratio. Also the Marc Jacobs brand as a whole just does not appeal to me. ?
Intruiging on some level, but I’m not sold. Will wait to see how this one pans out.
[sigh] KVD has hit upon my weakness — icons. If these are even remotely decent, I’m likely going to buy.
I like this palette. Might end up buying it. Depends on how much I spend.I may decide to get Natasha Denona’s Lila palette. And I want one of Pat McGrath’s eye shadow palettes so I need to be discerning with my spending, lol.
Way too many purple-ish shades for me. Easy pass!
OMG, I’ve been obsessed with this ever since I saw it online! And it’s finally here, yassss!! I saw the KVD swatch video, and wowzeeee!! Almost all the shadows have great pigment, and lots of unique colors. And the packaging is just stunning -KVD has outdone herself! It really does look like a medieval stained glass window. I can’t wait to get my hands on this!
I’m excited about this one. I think the shades swatched beautifully and looked more usable in swatches than they did in the pan. But I also don’t already have a crazy amount of palettes and I do have the storage room for it, even with the unconventional shape. I’ll wait to see what reviews sound like, but if the shadows perform as well as the other KVD shadows I have, I’ll be snatching this up.
I not sure how I can completely appreciate the concept and yet dislike the results at the same time.. nonetheless.. The palette shape would drive me bonkers. Pass.
This may be the most DIVINE packaging I’ve ever seen — pun intended!
Hoo boy. I want this one because I have a fascination with Catholic imagery and tradition, and the names are right up my alley. However, I haven’t purchased KVD in over a year for personal reasons and I don’t intend to, especially because I simply don’t see myself using these sorts of colors.
But the shade names…the design…that’s hard to pass up.
I can’t wait for your review on this.. if anything, the KVD swatch video of this made me more skeptical as all the brush swatches were very obviously (IMO) done lightly over atleast 3 heavy layers of finger/Fix+ switched.. I’m happy to be proven wrong, but still skeptical.
Feeling torn, I really don’t need more eyeshadow.
I am also a fan of old churches but comparing this to stained glass is a stretch. Thinking of getting this as I don’t own anything kat von d but we’ll see. The video swatches looked great!
The layout of this palette irks me so much. The way these shades are placed seems so utterly random. I still really want it for its design but ugh. why. Usually, I can mentally split palettes up in quads / triples and see how they’re meant to work together but for this one I just can’t see it.
I hate how much I love this. It’s so large, so hard to store, but I also love how unique the packaging is. And originally I talked myself out of it, thinking the colors would be too difficult, but the swatch video has me drooling again. Yikes. I really do not need to acquire more eyeshadow….. but it seems so special……
I’m not usually a fan of limited edition palettes but this is one I need to buy. I have many neutral eyeshadows so the crazy colors in this one appeals to me. I’m hoping the rich, jewel tones will inspire me to get more creative with statement looks for nights out and weekends.
Someone on r/makeupaddiction used photoshop to reorganize a number of palettes, including this one, and the colors all lined up in neat rows make this MUCH more appealing to me. I hate the packaging. It doesn’t look like stained glass windows to me, it just looks like bulky packaging with an incoherent color layout. It’s just a mess. As an atheist Jew I don’t find the naming or the iconography offensive but I also don’t find it interesting. It just screams “I’m E D G Y this’ll show mom for making me go to mass!!!!!” to me.
That said, I’m definitely not going to buy this, I don’t need it at all. But I do recommend people hunt down the reddit post (I can’t look at reddit at work, or I’d link it) for an easier view of the colors.
Here’s that post from r/makeupaddiction:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/comments/70ipj7/organized_palettes_kvd_abhcolourpop_doc_huda/
It has other palettes as well – I found it really interesting to see how your perspective shifts once the colors are ordered differently!
I cannot wait for this one!
I ordered it immediately. I love KVD eye shadows, love stained glass, love the aesthetics.
It’s gorgeous packaging just to look at.But I don’t think I will buy because it is not so practical when I am im a rush to do my makeup. Also… I am not a fan of the formula! I will splurge on one of the Pat Mc Grath eyeshadow palettes!
I really regret not getting the Metal Matte palette last year. At first I really thought I wanted this, but now I’m very meh about it. Think I’m just going to stick with the Lorac Mega Pro 4.
I’ve been waffling on this since I first heard about it a couple months ago. Last night, I ultimately decided to order this. Fingers crossed I like it.
OMG, it’s a hundred times more beautiful in person. I’ll try out the shadows tomorrow.
This looks divine….
Easy pass. KVD’s integrity is crap. Google what she did to her contest winner.
Pretty!
Does anyone know of any Dupes for the Vestment shade at all?
It looks a very pretty palette but really only that shade caught my eye.
Any recomendations would be very welcome 🙂
Thank you
I see this is a limited edition pallete. How long can we expect to see this up for sale?
