How do you fix a look that's just not working?
How do you fix a look that’s just not working? Do you just go with it? Remove it and skip the makeup for the day?
When foundation isn’t working, I’ll try and using a tinted moisturizer to fix it – like I keep a lighter and darker tinted moisturizer (because, inevitably, most of us all have a few products that just don’t match that we forget to return!) and try to correct. Sometimes if it’s a little light, I’ll use the right-colored powder to set and hope for the best. If eye makeup isn’t working out, I try to apply mascara and see if that helps at all; if not, I just remove it and go makeup-free on the eyes (well, plus mascara!). For lips, I’ll remove and redo. If I’m rushed, I’ll just throw on a go-to gloss.

You apply a base over it & start all over or just add color and take risks !
i wipe and re-do, no matter what part of my face it is
Generally, if it’s not salvageable with any makeup tricks I know of…a soapy washcloth, some toner, moisturizer, a little primer (try not to cry) haha…and simply start again!! Second attempts I usually decide to go bold and crazy with glittery colors to cheer me up!! Shimmer makes me happy ;c)
Haha! I do pretty much the same thing, but my second attempts usually are “neutral” – the boldest I go on a second attempt is a colorful eyeliner.
I just discovered the wonders of Urban Decay’s Liners. They are so cute, fun and actually afforadable!! I’m 36 and maybe blue and purple liners don’t suit my age…but so long as I love it!! Eyeliners can be lots of fun ;c)
I redo if I have time. If I don’t and it’s on the eyes, I add some liner and mascara, and blend away as much of the color as I can with a Q-tip. If it’s on the lips, I’ll just wipe it away and throw something else on top since that barely takes any time. If it’s face-makeup related, I definitely take the whole thing off, and redo if I have time. If not, better no base makeup than botched base makeup.
hm, if something went wrong in the application process I use a q-tip (depends on the area ofc) and fix it, if the colours/textures don’t work like I wanted them to I fall back to: simple eyes + nice lipstick, that always works!
With eye makeup, I usually begin to silently panic and go over it with a blending brush, a neutral shade, or whatever it needs – to be toned down, blended better, or whatever – but if it gets out of control I wipe it off using a little bit of a facial cleansing towelette, and start over with something EXTREMELY simple to make up for all that lost time.
I always keep a darker or lighter powder if ever I put on a foundation that doesn’t go with my skintone. If I’m wearing a BB Cream, I let it set for a while since most BB Creams sort of blend with my skintone once it absorbs into my skin but if it can’t be saved, the powder comes in to try to revive it. When it comes to the eyes, I’d top it off with powder to mute the colors and blend in a neutral color on the crease to make it more wearable. If it’s something heavy like a wing liner that I’ve completely screwed up, I’d bring out the cotton swabs and makeup remover. If it’s the lip, if I always keep a matte nude lipstick and a matte red lipstick in case I need to lighten or darken my lip color, if it still doesn’t work, I’d whip the whole thing off and simply use a lipstick closest to my natural lip color.
When the eyeliner is the problem (regardless if it’s too much/ uneven/ does not feel right) it’s a must re-do. When it’s just the eyeshadow, I just add more, smoke it out as much as I can and keep the rest of mu very simple. When it’s the blush clashing with the rest of the make up I change the lip colour to a sheer gloss. When the foundation is cakey looking I try to revive it with Fix+ & cross the fingers. I’ll try anything before removing the whole paint works.
if it’s lips, it’s easy to erase and re-do… but with foundation, well to get it darker is easy, it’s when it’s all set with various powders and still does not work,(all uneven, somehow patchy, you know it) the only way it’s wash it off and start all over (so annoying!).
Blush: when it’s too bright or a wrong color I blot (or wipe) and tame it down with white loose powder.
Eyes… well it just happended to me yesterday, I tried a chartreuse green (very iridescent)combo with a shimmery deep brown (outer lid/crease), and a light upper lid highlighter… the combo was awful and there was no way to get it straight. Mascara did not help. I had no time to re-do it so I went out that way. I wore sunglasses all the time, even indoors!!!
Whenever I mess up eyeshadow, foundation, or get a smear here or there, I ALWAYS use philosophy’s the Supernatural. It’s an amazing primer, but it also slides my messed up makeup right off, so then I can just start over with out the soapy, wet, black runny mess!
I find that it’s usually better to take away something than to keep adding…
It depends on the level of awful. Yesterday, my Parisien Skies e/s was a little too dark as an all over lid colour for daytime. (beautiful, tho for evening) I grabbed a sigma blending brush and dusted Dazzlelight over it. Holy heck. Everyone immediately go home and do that. Result: irridescent periwinkle. Compliments: 5 on the day. I used a little omega in the crease with the same brush. Might be one of my favourite combos now.
The only time I’ll restart is if I start to look like a character in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything.
Depends on what part of the face it is. Eyes ill wipe and do over. Blush ill swipe some MACs msfn over it and reapply. Cause the majority of the Prob is putting on too much with my pale skin. Lips is easy, wipe of and reapply. Oil of olays wipes is always handy
I don’t know how many keep non-matching products, but I just wipe it off and do over.
for lips: remove redo. eyes I try to fix it with blending brushes or layering shadows if it fails wipe out start over.
I had foundation fail on me once, but I work near a sephora and ran over and had them fix me. so I guess that’s cheating…
If it’s not too bad, I add in something to it on my face to bring it down or boost it up and blend, blend, blend. If it’s just a lip color however, I just take that off and start over. If it’s a totally wrong eye look – out comes the eye makeup remover and I take it off and start over. I try not to experiment when I know I am making up to go out. I rarely will get caught with the wrong look when going out…but do when I am home and just goofing around.
Sometimes when I bright loud is too gawdy or loud, I try to tone it down with face powder on an eyeshadow brush and go over with that back and forth. Sometimes that works.
For cakey foundation: I have to undo — nothing seems to be able to fix this!
For too light foundation — a liberal dusting of darker powder seems to work.
For too dark foundation — adding a light layer of lighter liquid foundation may work.
For shadow gone wrong — turning the entire look into a smokey eye is quick fix.
For garish lipstick combos — a wipe and re-do or layering over a neutral/lighter lipgloss + patting with a tissue works for me.
For eyeshadow I remove and just do liner.
I have a kit that includes some warm, neutral and cool powders, so I can fix a foundation tone problem that way. Revlon Colorstay pressed powders a shade or two off from my usual has saved too light or dark foundation before.
Fix + can save some cakey makeup, but I prevent it by using a tissue with the plies separated to blot excess oil from my products. I will literally be late rather than have bad foundation.
For shadow that’s too dark, I either blend with a lighter color or use a primer to tone it down. I also use baby wipes, in very light passes across the face, to remove layers of color makeup. If it doesn’t fix it, then the wipe can be used to remove whatever offends for the next try.
If its my foundation I will wipe it off and redo it if I have time. If not then I will use a loose/pressed powder over it, depending on what is wrong with the foundation. If I have applied too much blusher/bronzer I will put a small amount of powder on a powder brush and lightly blend it on my cheeks with the blusher/bronzer.
For an eye makeup problem I will wipe it off and if I have time will try another look I know will work or else I will go makeup free and just use mascara.
For my lips I will also wipe it off and just use a lipgloss.
Remove it all the way haha!
Thank you for this question!! I just recently started wearing makeup and sometimes it just takes a left and doesn’t’t work out. I thought it was just me!! For eye make up I blend bare study paint pot down over the wreck and then hopefully reply over that. What do you to remove tiny mascara stains that ruin the look at the end?
Just lightly blend them out with a brush or q-tip! They will disappear much easier that way 🙂
