What has been your boldest beauty move?

What has been your boldest beauty move? Did it pay off?

A couple of years ago, I cut off a ton of my hair – sure, it wasn’t to my ears or anything, but for me, it was incredibly short.  It just didn’t work out for me, though.  I much prefer my long hair!

Thanks to Maureen for today’s question!

I got my hair permanently straightened…and haven’t regretted it for a second! I could only wear my hair in a ponytail it was so thick and curly and frizzy and now I can go to bed with wet hair (unbrushed!) and wake up and it’s PERFECT. In the makeup department, I’m not very bold at all, but I should be!

Joanna Avatar

Hi Laurel:

Can you tell me what kind of product/process you used? Your hair sounds similar to mine and I’m looking for solutions.

Thanks!

Pame Avatar

at least when i did it it was a chemical straightment just like when you get a permanent, it lasted like 6 months, now they do it with keratin, chocolate, etc

Pame Avatar

i love the permanent straightment i have done it 3 times in the past 8 years loved the results but you need to take care a lot of your hair cause it gets so much damage

Laurel Avatar

Also, this is a non keratin solution. I am very against keratin because it can cause serious birth defects. As far as I know, this is the ONLY non-keratin chemical straightening process.

As a rebellious sophomore in highschool I decided to dye my hair ‘little mermaid red’ while my parents were out of town. A friends mom was staying with us and I new she would get upset because she knew my parents would freak. I put on a ridiculous looking doo-rag to cover up my hair but she saw right through my sudden urge to don a doo-rag. As expected my mom was PISSED. Her and her friend decided to mix bleach and shampoo to rinse out the color… It turned my hair a fantastically light shade of orange. After a week or 2 with wicked hair, mom finally took me to her hair dresser to fix the mess I had created. NEVER again lol

I’m sure this sounds stupid but my boldest beauty move might be a couple years ago when I tried on putting foundation. Growing up I was always in the You-never-need-foundation-but-good-skincare-products phase, but now… I love to wear at least a bit of foundation every time I go out. It has been more like a habit I would say; probably not a very good one though – sometimes my skin looks great foundation just makes it worse.

Trina Avatar

Even though I’ve gone from mid-back-length hair to super short, that’s not the boldest move. I bought MAC’s Mattine Violetta lipstick from the Style Black collection.
Rarely wear it, but it always makes a statement when I do.

Amy Avatar

Wearing Peacocky (the blue lipcolor from the Peacocky collection) in public 😛 It popped nicely against my pale skin and received a lot of compliments on it

I’m pretty freakin unconventional sooo in the late 90’s I wore all the awesome UD lippie colors like Frostbite, Cash, Uzi and I swear I would wear them with the matching eyeshadow. I wasn’t trying to please anyone but myself, so I guess I was successful. I also always fully ringed my eyes, I legitimately couldn’t leave the house without them done that way. I also changed my hair color a lot from bright red/orange to blue/green and I had a ball. There was an upscale sex shop in town that sold fancy body glitter, I got hooked on using it as a primitive highlighter when there really wasn’t any on the market (or at least none I knew of in ’96). Loved that stuff. Nowadays I guess my Uncle Leo brows are my boldest beauty asset.

I’m a neutral girl all the way but just a few weeks ago I wore mint green and dark purple eyeshadow to work and it surprisingly turned out really, really well! 😀 The sheer and shimmery mint green actually neutralized the redness on my eye and it looked gorgeous beneath the purple. After that, I’ve been wearing it to work since. 🙂

Mora Avatar

two years ago, i dyed my hair bright pink and put in pink and violet extensions. it looked freakin’ awesome. even my friends told me, that it really looks good and match my personality.

Christina Avatar

I cut my hair the shortest it’s been since infancy in March — I got a ton of compliments on it, but my hair grows so quickly the cut has already lost its shape. I’m too much of a cheapskate to maintain short hair!

Aysegul Avatar

I have my hair cut into a very short pixie, and luckily it worked well – I got many compliments. Now I am not planning to grow my hair back, on me short hair is better than long hair.

The boldest makeup change I’ve ever made was recently. I ditched the heavy matte foundations (MAC/Dermablend) and now love NARS Oil-Free Primer, Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer (Laura Mercier is my FAV!!) along w/ her Secret Camouflage. Then I add some shimmer for a more natural “dewy” look. My skin looks so much better!! Also, nice brushes make a world of difference!! Goodness, I love makeup…haha, I could talk about it forever ;c)

John Avatar

Hmm, I think it was when I put on some heavy black eyeliner and created fake facial hair with makeup. Haha, considering I don’t really have any facial hair, the curse of being Asian…, that’s pretty crazy.

Kathy Avatar

For the longest time, I was too scared to get my hair cut, styled, and layered. I have fine and naturally curly hair that can easily frizz, so I felt that I couldn’t pull off a lot of hairstyles.

Well, about a year ago, I finally got bored enough with my hair and got it styled and layered … And it has totally paid off! I STILL get compliments on my hair. 🙂

Boldest move ever: going from bum-length hair to a chin-length bob in sixth grade. Needless to say, uh. (I’ve got an inverted bob now – shoulder-length in front, almost – and it flatters these wide cheekbones of mine much more skillfully. ;]) We’re going to ignore the electric-blue-turned-green-because-someone’s-a-strawberry-blonde moment in seventh grade.

Recently: buying NARS’s lip gloss in Nana. Near black in the bottle, stunningly, amazingly gorgeous on this < NW5. <3 Possibly one of my best purchases ever – COMPLETELY opened up my mind and makeup aresenal!

Haya Avatar

after losing a ton of weight, i thought i needed a drastic change to go along with my new body… so i shopped my hair, and died it blonde!! more like a pixi hair cut!! as soon as i left the salon and met up with my mom, i regretted it beyond belief!! but haeeee what the hell, it grew back in the end:D

Michilicious ~ Avatar

I guess except wearing weird make up throughout sixth grade, it would be considered cutting my hair really short by myself.
It could have been dying my hair purple (Manic Panic Deadly Nightshade) if I had bleached it first, but I did not so it wasn’t extremely bright 😛

Mariella Avatar

My stupidest beauty move was cutting my hair short. I was pregnant with my 2nd and figured that with 2 babies under 2, I wouldn’t have time for my long hair but was I ever wrong – the short hair was so much more work (this is in the days before ceramic straighteners!). My boldest move would be accepting frosted products – mainly eye shadows – into my life. When I was younger, I didn’t like them and most were pretty garish. But when I hit my 40’s, I thought frosts were off limits and stuck strictly to matte EVERYTHING. Little did I realize how much frosts had changed and how great they are now.

Kathy Avatar

I did get the horrid hairstyle that I have now, but that made me creative with scarves (thank God that’s “in” this year.)
I love to wear bright lipstick or dramatic eyeshadow, but never both. I love MAC’s So Chaud and Morange! So many women are afraid of color, but look so beautiful with bright lips or dramatic eyes.

Líria Avatar

It was actually recent, I got my hair dyed a fierce shade of red, lol. It’s not really working out: the color looks great on me, and green eyeshadow looks better than ever, but the color is such a BIT** to maintain! After two weeks it turns into a reddish brown and looses all it’s shine… I might just dye it black next time.

Maureen Avatar

Dude, the Bumble and Bumble color support line is the BEST color-care shampoo/conditioner I’ve ever tried! It’s like, the best stuff in their whole brand imo. It’s pricey, so if you are on a budget just get the shampoo and pair it with a fave colored-hair conditioner! I do this for my ashy-blonde hair, which is also hard to maintain.

Betty Avatar

I usually am very cautious and conservative with my appearance (not with my nails at all though!) but today I found out my eyebrow kit had some stencils. I tried those out, and thought I would as well experiment with a new eyebrow shape….
They’re pretty much what defines my face, they are pretty thick and extremely defined. My “idea” cut my eyebrows in half, horizontally and almost lengthwise! 🙁 I have a big forehead and tiny eyebrows now lol. Good thing they grow back in a few weeks!

Opheliana Avatar

I made about 2 feet long spikes of my hair and paired it with strong eyes and clear blue lips and went out like that (for a photoshoot, but had to get through half the city first :P). Even though I’m not a punker, it looked completely awsome.
It was kind of annoying to stand for 2 hours in the shower trying to get the spikes out though 😛

Chris25 Avatar

I suppose going to beauty school to become a makeup artist would be it! I had to borrow money from relatives, purge my savings, and forfeit a social life so I could work overtime and attend classes. I had never done anything so risky, and yet it has paid off. I am very happy to work with talented people and create amazing looks.

Jennifer Avatar

My junior year in highschool, I wanted to have reddish orange hair like Tyra Banks, my stylist warned me but I pleaded with him even though he tried to tell me Tyra was wearing a wig…after a few months my hair broke off and I had to get a hair cut for my senior year. I’m staying away from bleach from now on.

Leslie Avatar

I went through the whole, I’m a weirdo, nobody understands me thing, my junior year of highschool and simultaneously pierced my eyebrow, dyed my hair purple, and got a tattoo (underage…oops!). I don’t regret any of it but I can’t pretend I’m not a teeny bit bitter about the scar on my right eyebrow that’s made the hairs go all wonky. Lol.

Mine was a horrible perm years ago when we were all into major curly looks. I had a good wedge cut with it – but oh, what a mess to have to keep up with from having major straight hair…plus one of those you look back at the photos and think what was I thinking? I am with you Josh on shaving your head – I did mine when I went through chemo. It’s a shock but for me, it made me proud (and also had a cold head/ears all the time)!

Maureen Avatar

My question! 😀

I had white hair in high school. Back then, however, it was ‘Gwen Stefani’ blonde. I dyed it to regular blonde RIGHT before Lady Gaga happened. I wish I’d kept it a little longer because it would have been super hip.

About a month ago I cut my (naturally pin-straight) hair into a bob that is way longer in the front than in the back, and a week or so ago I got my bangs dyed platinum white, and I have a feather infused in my hair. 🙂

I always believe in bold step with my face and cloth and believe me if you do some thing different eith your face or yourself you will enjoy. Like we bored with few people around us similarly we bored with our life style and makeup always try to do some thing different, some thing news so people keep discussing you and expect some thing from you…..

Lee Avatar

I don’t know if this counts but it was when I decided to learn how to do make-up. For years, I’d just worn eye liner & mascara and maybe lipgloss. And then I decided that I wanted to know how to do a really polished face. So I invested $$ into good brushes, make-up, watched a ton of tutorials, and experimented. It was hard to get over feeling like any color on my face made me look like a “painted lady” but now I’m confident that my make-up looks skillful and polished.

Eleni Avatar

5 years ago I had super long hair (they reached my waist). I decided to cut it short. So I went to my stylist and asked him to cut it 2 fingers long! My father’s hair was longer than mine! Everybody at school freaked out. My mother started crying when she saw me! lol

Jaime Avatar

Hmmm…. I guess shaving my head? I don’t have a good reason why – I just felt like doing one day and I really liked how it came out, so now I just keep it that way. I was inspired by Tank Girl, so I shaved everything except for my bangs.

It makes my life easier. I always hated going to get my hair cut, so now I just shave it myself and cut my own bangs when I need to. I’m not spending tons of money on hair products every month, and it keeps me cool in the warm weather. I should have done it years ago!

Deb Avatar

Hmm, aside from wearing elaborate/artistic eye makeup for events like Renaissance fairs and parties, I think my latest hair coloring counts. The top is red, and the hair underneath is BRIGHT highlighter yellow. Well, at least it was until the second time I washed it. Must redo!

Ursula Avatar

Mine is the same- I’ve gone boy-short with my hair a couple of times, and after my wedding last year I did again. I love how quick, easy, and distinctive my short hair is, and I don’t think I’ll grow it out past my chin again without some major philosophical shift.

Pame Avatar

a couple of years ago i choped almost all my hair ( i was like 5 cm from shaving my hair lol ) i really liked it but when it started to grow it was a pain in the butt cause i have extremely curly hair

Sari Avatar

In my oppinion , none of the things I do are ” bold ” but I know a lot of people consider the things I do absolutely crazy . My hair has been dyed bright colours for a long time ( right now it ‘s purple but soon it ‘ll be orange ! ) And I like wearing lip colours like black , blue & purple out in public .

Naomi Avatar

I recently shaved half my head & dyed the rest of my hair black & White. I’ve been called “badger” or “skunk” a couple of times but I love it & I’ve had a lot of compliments too! :o)

Katrine Avatar

I do bold things all the time. A few years ago I perm my straight hair, 2 years ago I cut it real short; I have to say I love my short hair a lot but there isn’t many option to style it so I’m growing my hair out now. Last time was two week ago, I wore an full on orange lipstick to my sister’s grad. I love doing bold things!

Kathryn Avatar

Bright pink lips or a cat eye. I’m 16 and most of my friends don’t wear makeup so even a little looks excessive to the people I’m around!

Brie Avatar

I cut my hair VERY short in high school (inspired by Audrey Tatou in Amelie)…but since I have a big ol’ half-Korean face and very wavy hair, it looked absolutely awful on me! I look back on my senior year pictures and cringe. The shortest I’ll ever go again will be shoulder length!

FlyingBuffalo Avatar

I got purple extensions! They’re pretty subtle because they’re attached kinda underneath my (other) hair. But they’re still noticeable and I would definitely do it again!

Puffnstuff Avatar

Omg, a few yrs ago when i was young and naive, i wore a red liquid lipgloss to wotk and it left a ring around my lips and bled… And to make mstters worse it would not come off! Totally stained. It was a nightmare!

Nancy Avatar

the peacock eye where i used around….6 colors.. (yellow, green, turquoise, purple, dark blue, teal) ! news years eve 2010 and everyone loved it….

Dame Elizabeth Avatar

Long aqua blue hair pieces within my long blonde hair. Then Gaga did it and I couldn’t wear them for ages! But I do love adding coloured hair pieces and then just having the freedom to take them out when you don’t feel like it!

Rebecca Avatar

most recently for me, I changed the shape of my nails. 🙂 I know, sounds subtle, but but they are pointy now! Think Lady Gaga and Rihanna. I absolutely LOVE them and would never go back! I always get compliments on them, and now when I look at square nails something just looks wierd about them! lol

Rebecca Avatar

I read an article in a magazine a few years back about thin eyebrows and how they were edgy and very high fashion, lets say i was motivated by reading that and plucked so much they were paper thin -.- boldest and WORST beauty move i have ever done! Thank god eye brows grow..

Rebecca Avatar

Hmm…well it wasn’t really bold but I have extremly wild curly hair so I got a relaxer, cut my hair to my ears and put in god awful extensions. It didn’t look bad, the long hair looked goo against my round face, but the extensions got ratty and gross within 2 weeks and I would always sweat in dance class so my hair would just curl up anyways haha

Jennifet Avatar

I’ve actually cut all my hair off on Christmas day….it was damaged and shedding from stress…. so, I started anew!! Btw when I say cut off I mean shanade o connor baldy off…but its growing back healthier than ever

Helena Avatar

Three (-ish?) things.
First, I also cut my hair. In 2007, my trademark had been my long (at least my waist), naturally blonde-ombré hair. But I cut it (myself!) to about my armpits/cleavage. I was now a brunette! And I kept giving myself new styles when I was bored, until, about a year ago (give maybe a month), I cut myself an asymmetrical mullet with part of my head shaved, bleached my hair platinum, and then dyed it blue. I loved it, the school administrators and my friends hated it.
Also, on New Year’s day of 2009, I shaved my eyebrows (I wasn’t exactly in a good place mentally, ha ha). It didn’t really matter that much–no one besides my family saw it, because I had become an agoraphobe–but it was terrible. (Then again, some time later, I started bleaching my eyebrows. This look is a bit less harsh.)
