  • Haul: A silicone brush cleaning mat (a random one from Amazon) — curious to see how well it works.
  • Weekend plans: My parents will be visiting in July, so I need to tidy up some of the areas that I let get messy (mostly the front hall where packages arrive and get emptied).

Haul:
Tarte Make Believe In Yourself Palette! I ordered it from the tarte sale! 😀

I bought Some La Roche-Posay sunblock.

And I’m planning to buy the new Canada Flag Red lipstick from BITE!!!

Weekend plans: My best friend from Quebec is coming back next wednesday, so I’m spending the weekend cleaning and buying food and getting ready for her!!!! Super excited!!

Last book I read: I re read Marley and Me Recently!!! It made me cry my eyes out ahaha!!!

Shannon. N Avatar

OH NO! I watched it with a bunch of friends at a sleep over when I saw it. And I was the only one who cried. (Those heartless people I call friends!) And they all teased me for weeks!

The book was so much worse, so I only can read it when I’m in a good place LOL

WildDove Avatar

That’s what tote bags are for, so you can BYOT (bring your own box of tissues). I always take one when I go out for Indian food!

Shannon. N Avatar

I hope you can see them in store!!!

I saw the GTA BITE lipstick is still in stock on sephora canada. And I REALLY want it ahaha.

I love that bite came out with the flag red lipstick, but I wish It was more unique than just red. But that is our country’s flag colour I guess LOL

Mariella Avatar

I bought it at full Candian price when it first hit the shelves in Sephora. I love it but it’s not the most practical of palettes, to tell you the truth. But the shadows are SO pretty!

Shannon. N Avatar

Hey Shari!!!!

I didn’t respond right away, because I HATED the sunblock from the first application.

It felt thick, and tacky. And it left my face GLOWING. I looked like I applied liquid highlighter all over my face!!

But I re applied it today, and it sank in. And set. And wasnt shiney or glowy!! And was the PERFECT base for makeup!

So to answer your question. I dont know!! I’ll have to come back to you!! 😀

Haul: Becca Light Chaser in Opal Flashes Jade- I swatched it in store and thought it was a really cool effect, but I didn’t actually try it on, and I wish I had – the green/blue on my skin is a little weird…

Weekend plans: I was at a week-long conference at my company’s HQ this week, just got home yesterday – I am BEAT. So hopefully relax and catch up on some sleep

What was the last book you read?: When I was on vacation last month, I read Andy Cohen’s “Most Talkative” which was hilarious, and then his first “The Andy Cohen Diaries” book, which I didn’t really care for at all.

Marla Rae Avatar

Haul: Picked up NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Abu Dhabi (love it) and Butter Gloss in Madeleine (love it too!). Also, got some new lashes, facial cleanser and more Micellar Water. Need to get a new moisturize because I think the one I’m using is breaking me out 

Weekend plans: My dad recently had a stroke, so the fiancé and I are going to help my parents around their house. Movie going and video editing will take up the rest of my time.

What was the last book you read?: The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss. It’s a high-carb low-fat vegan lifestyle book that has really changed my life. I’ve been a vegetarian for a while, but leaning towards veganism and this book is super insightful and helpful.

Haul: I was going to say nothing but that’s a lie! I bought a few Fresh Lip Treatments, one as a gift and a few for me on the 2x points event. I also got NARS Orgasm liquid blush. I think I got the point MUFE aqua paint and a TF mini lipstick. Not gonna lie, that mini lipstick pushed me over the edge on whether to spend or not.

Weekend: Finally going to see WW. Was going to last weekend but got so sick I couldn’t leave the house. Other than that, video games, chores, and food shopping. I also need to go find my husband a belt he hopefully won’t ruin immediately for a civilian attire work week for this career faire he’s helping with. I really should be blogging and catching up on blogs, my reading list, and several other things but my brain and body haven’t been cooperating with me.

Last Book: Was unfortunately too long ago, it was the beginning of CS Friedmans Dreamwalker series. I bought a whole bunch of books at Powells when I was down in Portland but seem to not have picked any of them up in the two months I’ve had them!

Erin Avatar

LOL, I can see that. Honestly, when I started thinking about hauls, I was like, no you didn’t buy anything! I forgot I ordered something for just a bit. I was going to get my friend a gift, she’s been really struggling and just got a new job with GreenPeace and I wanted to get her some congrats gift/pick me up so with 2x points and the TF mini for me, I was like score, being nice and getting rewarded for it!

Erin Avatar

I love it there! I go for cookbooks, my regular choices of sci/fi and fantasy, and then the rare books… Plus they have the best little cube toys and fun things to buy that aren’t really practical. If you ever go to Portland, it’s a must. Always go to the downtown location, the others aren’t as impressive.

Haul: First of 2 BH Cosmetic orders ~
BH Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Agatha, Lucinda, Lovey, Amber, and Lucy.
BH Liquid Lipstick – Long-Wearing Matte Lipstick in Tabitha, Endora, Sorbet, Serena, & Clara.
BH Liquid Foundation in Light-Olive
Sixth Edition 1st Tray To Go – 6 Color Eyeshadow Palette
Blushed To Go – 4 Color Blush Palette
Eye Essential To Go – 4 Piece Brush Set

Also got new mini studio lighting, one of my lamps was blow over in a storm and shattered the bulb over my desk and bed….. 🙁 The new replacements are brighter and cooler so I replaced both the old bulbs with Cowboystudio 45W Photography Photo CFL 5500K and I have 2 backups as well. lol

Weekend plans: Generation(Gen) Beauty Toronto on Saturday (We shall see how it goes). I think I will be seeing the Mummy on Sunday or Tuesday as I got the weekend off this week.

What was the last book you read?: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell I’m currently reading.

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

It was an odyssey to get the new lighting because I did want brighter. Thankfully Amazon has free shipping and returns! I tried out 2 styles of Neewer 45W CFL 5500K lights first. One set was WAY too big for the small lamps but great for large softboxes and the new LED photo Lights which were really nice (really expensive!) and didn’t generate hardly any heat but they have a fan that were too noisy for filming videos in close quarters that I have. lol

I think I will be filming a Gen Beauty Toronto haul to test them out. 😉

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

I pick up an on clearance Quo silicone brush cleaning mat. I’ve also seen some at Marshalls®/Winners but those one use flimsy/soft silicone instead of the firmer silicone one which makes a huge difference in using them to clean brushes when you’re looking for cheap one.

I haven’t used the Quo one yet but my old pet grooming brush I use to clean my makeup brushes is starting to lose it bristles. lol

This one has been well loveed. 😉

Oh my gosh so MANY lipsticks!!! So nice of MAC but your lips!! Hey, if you already have some of the MAC ones or have already reviewed them, maybe do a MAC lipstick giveaway for the blog ? I’d be happy to take them off your hands 🙂
*Haul -nothing, but that will soon change, as I got 20% off coupon from Ulta, and I’m eyeing some stuff
*Weekend – relax, has been crazy week at work, then maybe brunch with some friends, and kids play date, as both of us have toddlers
*Last book -kids bedtime book

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh I got that Tarte Make Believe at full price, when it originally launched, I was worried it was going to sell out. No regrets – if you like shimmery metallic colors, just beautiful, and a number of unique colors in there too! The only thing I don’t care for is that artificial vanilla smell, doesn’t bother my lids/eyes, probably because my oily lids provide a protective barrier, but I can’t wear that highlighter on my sensitive cheeks. Now it’s like marked down to $30 and with 20% off, will be a steal!

monica Avatar

That lipstick vault is nuts!

Haul: I got sandals with stars on it. Crossing my fingers it gets here before 4th of July weekend! I cannot believe it’s gonna be July next week! I’m not ready haha

Weekend plans: Finishing the current book I’m making today…4 days later lol
Old Navy flip flop sale, fireworks, and probably packing for next week

What was the last book you read?: I actually don’t remember the name of it. I read it last year in the airport waiting for flight home from Spain.

Joyce Avatar

Please let us know about the silicone mat! I’ve been back and forth about grabbing the Real Techniques one but a cleansing mat just seems like a boring purchase lol 😀

Haul: Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette, MAC Marsala Liptensity lipstick (for my grandmother), MAC Viva Glam V lipstick (for my sister), & free MAC Capricious lipstick for me–Ulta’s B2G1 free deal + 20% coupon! Along with BH Cosmetics Carli Bybel deluxe palette & Essence Satin Love blush. This is quite a heavy week for me, so I probably won’t get anything for a month or so!

Weekend plans: Probably dinner out tonight, errands & home stuff tomorrow, church Sunday. Since I only see my husband on the weekends, I feel they go by far too quickly!

What was the last book you read?: I recently finished Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet. It’s kind of a short story but still enjoyable. TV adaptation is interesting!

AB Avatar

Great photo — Mellan and the whole story all in one go.

Haul: ABH single e/s Brick and Rose Gold; Paula’s Choice Resist C15 booster, eye cream, 10% niacinamide booster (love already), Balancing pore reducing toner, plus several samples; Lancôme blush subtil in Coral Kiss. So far so good on all of them.

Weekend plans: trip to visit a friend in Florida

Book: The Fifth Season by NK Jesimin, a very good science fiction book but also an excellent novel.

Kate Avatar

Haul: I’m still waiting for some eyeliners I bought from Suva beauty to be delivered, UD allnighter and chill setting sprays because that sale on Sephora 😉 and a travel kit with essentials since I’m going on vacation in 2 weeks.

Weekend plans: grabbing some things from the JSC summer launch and catching up with the boyfriend since we were busy all week.

What was the last book you read?: Birdman by Mo Hayder..very dark and disturbing but extremely well written! It’s the first of a series and I just started the second book!

Lindsay_MK Avatar

HAUL: replacement Clinique Moisture Surge Intense (I can buy this a lot of places – and get it for really cheap at Costco – but couldn’t resist the Nars Orgasm mini lipstick GWP that Sephora was offering!), the Wayne Goss airbrush (my first Wayne Goss), replacement hyaluronic acid/B5 serum from The Ordinary, and Anastasia lipgloss in St. Tropez. This is my first ABH lip gloss – anxious to try it. But I haven’t used ANY of my new stuff because I was recovering from a laser procedure on my face. Oh yeah, I also got some ABH tinted brow gel – tried 2 colors and neither of them are quite right, although I really like the texture and intensity of the tint. It’s a dilemma because my brows are cooler and darker than my hair and when a brow color matches my brows and lashes well, it looks good with my skin and eyes but not my hair…

Weekend plans: my husband and kids and I are with my parents and 2 sisters visiting my dad’s family in Dallas. There will be a lot of eating and chatting (i.e. my husband will be miserable!)

Last book I read: The Wonder by Emma Donaghue. Currently reading A Gentleman in Moscow. I love reading!

Lindsay_MK Avatar

Lucky you – I love meeting the authors! We’re lucky to have an excellent small local bookstore with great connections and respect in the publishing industry – they frequently bring in both the big names as well as lesser-known writers.

Jennifer Avatar

Haul: nothing this week but have a few things in my Sephora shopping cart online…haven’t decided to check out yet though
Weekend Plans: sleeping in lol, it’s supposed to be a rainy weekend
What was the last book you read?: Chicken Soup for the College Soul, I used to love reading these as a teenager. I’m now 25 so it’s been a few years since college but the short stories are charming.

Tammy B Avatar

Haul: I got the remaining items from the UD Jean Michel Basquait collection. I have been using all the products (cheek palette, eyeliners, lipsticks and both eyeshadow palettes) and I have to say this is a really nice collection. I didn’t know a single neutral eyeshadow could capture my heart but Levitation is the transition color I’ve always dreamed of but could never find. I don’t even like nude lips but I can’t stop wearing Abstract and Epigram with a variety of lip liners and glosses. So glad I got this collection!

Weekend plans: Still recovering from my daughter’s wedding. My daughter got married last Saturday AT MY HOUSE. We are in the middle of a kitchen makeover so it was almost comical, having 40 guests see my kitchen with no cabinet doors, paint everywhere, etc. I spent a lot of time thinking about what make up I would wear, knowing even if I planned it I would change my mind on the day of. I ended up mixing my Guerlain BB cream with glow oil for sheer coverage and did not wear powder. I used just a touch of Chanel’s Code Elegant shadows, a coral blush with a hint of bronzer, and Chanel’s Ardente lipstick. Here is my look: https://instagram.com/p/BVfOZHtBjtq/

I am curious to know: what is everyone planning to buy during Ulta sale?

Will get back with you on the book I most recently finished.

kjh Avatar

You looked lovely! Congrats. U sale: prob start on xmas shopping. Know someone for the UD matte palette and s.o. for BH Karli 2. Some more Zs (hauled min sunscreen and the small dryer/flat iron combo this week. The iron is for depotting and my dryer is about to crap out, so thought process intact, but missed the coupon…). Aurora highlighter. Abh Mr, but for points. How yay! Surely other stuff…Since it seems I’m answering here: plans:ssdw. Read: George Pelecanos’ The Double. He writes Baltimore and D.C. and screenwrote for The Wire, that I think was the best thing ever on tv. (I only have 3 non-work topics: dogs, cosmetics, and crime. The order can vary…)

Tammy Avatar

Thank you, kjh. The ABH Aurora should be nice. I am not allowed to buy anymore highlight palettes for awhile, but if I could, Aurora would surely be under consideration.

Three non-work topics, lol. What do you do for work?

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

You look STUNNING! And you were worried about the color of the dress – looks lovely on you even if it was outside your comfort zone. So happy for you 🙂

I’m working on my Ulta % off order, I always used to burn through those promos right away and then something new would release and I have regrets. So this time, I’m holding off. Right now, my only sure buys are backups of my Alterna haircare and a bottle of SJP Stash (I’d heard a lot of people saying it was good and I had a chance to sniff it today). There are a few other things I’m considering depending on how the items arriving today swatch. I ordered some items to test from Lottie London and Note Cosmetics since they’re new lines for Ulta. If the items seem good, I’ll most likely add some more items from their lines to my order. What are your plans for the promo?

Tammy B Avatar

Thank you, Michelle. My dress was much-complimented, but I still would have worn something different, lol.

Some things under consideration for Ulta sale are St. Tropez Self Tan Express, the Body Shop chamomile eye makeup remover, any shave cream that look good, KP duty Lotion (for overnight body exfoliate, a couple Urban Decay Vice lipsticks, and Tarte Pro to Go eyeshadow palette,

Deborah S. Avatar

Congratulations on your daughter’s wedding. You looked stunning. I loved the dress you wore. I saw that you were remodeling your kitchen and was impressed with your ability to put on a wedding and remodel at the same time. I have been in the process of converting my garage to a livable space since this past September and it has been a chore between my bad back and my brother’s doing it in his spare time which isn’t a lot. I am so anxious for it to be done.

Tammy Avatar

Deborah, I am not anxious to be done: I HAVE GIVEN UP on ever being done painting my kitchen cabinets. I have cleaned and sanded and primed and painted for over 70 hours, and I feel like we still have 70 more hours to go. I’ve made myself sick from working so hard on those cabinets. Right now I might just refuse to pick up a paint roller or brush until the fourth of July. I need a break!

ShariP Avatar

Congratulations Tammy. You were positively radiant. I placed my Ulta order last night. Three MAC lipsticks, one was free, and three MAC eyeshadow. I’m still looking for a universal transition shadow so hopefully one of these will be it. In addition to the 20%off coupon I had a $10 gift card. Love that Ulta is carrying MAC now since the closest physical MAC counter is more than 100 miles from me.

Genevieve Avatar

You look really lovely Tammy and that dress shade of peach is very pretty. You did your makeup so well too. You must be exhausted and I hope you are able to take some time off work to recover.
Congratulations to your daughter and I wish them both the very best in their future lives together.

Tammy Avatar

Genevieve,

Thank you for the compliment. Lea and her husband, Joey, are such a wonderful match. I didn’t think there were other men as good as my husband until Lea found Joey. Marriage is never easy, but they have chosen well and should be able to make it for a lifetime.

Tammy Avatar

Awww, thanks, Anna! I swear I rarely ever look this nice. Actually, I don’t know how that happened. I put my make up and do my hair every work day, but it rarely comes together that well.

Erica Avatar

Haul: Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Loyalist, Loreal Voluminous Lash Paradise in Blackest Black, Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Mauve, Milani Amore Matte Metallic Lip Cream in Prismatic Touch, MAC Gleamstone Powder in Dunes at Dusk from Vibe Tribe Collection from CCO, MAC Electric Mandarin and Royal Woo Eyeshadows From Chris Chang Collection from CCO

Weekend: Taking an online test of sorts for recertification for my job. Other than that, which I’m doing a little here and a little there, I have no real plans, which is always a good thing:)

Last book read: Mary Poppins. I never read it before as a kid. It holds up

Alice Avatar

Haul: New body sunblock finally! Husband forgot about the 3oz rule and put our sunblock in his carry-on on our way back from Hawaii, and it got caught by TSA and thrown out. This time I’m trying the Trader Joe’s brand because I’ve heard good reviews. Also picked up a Star Wars skirt and our new address labels & checks arrived!

Weekend Plans: Our journey with the the old house has FINALLY started it’s new chapter. We finished the work on Tuesday, and today we’re doing the photography and getting it listed! Tomorrow we’ll do some minor stuff at the new house. Sunday is husband’s birthday, so I think we’re going to relax and go out to dinner and maybe catch a movie.

The last book you read: I’m currently reading The Fall by Bethany Griffin and Outlaw Women by Robert Barr Smith. The last ones I finished were American Gods by Neil Gaiman and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I’m always reading 2 books at the same time – 1 physical copy and 1 on kindle.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: Josie Maran Intensive Cream Oil (it CURED the rash/scaliness I’d developed on my one eye so I went out and bought the full sized tube as I had a tiny Sephora sample pot); Sephora Beauty Amplifier Afterglow Primer and Luminizer (unless that was last week – I honestly can’t remember), MUFE Mist & Fix and, for my daughter, a new tube of Smashbox face primer (I really think she ought to try a different – IMO “better” – primer but she likes that one) and I also got samples of 2 of the Nars liquid blushes – Orgasm and Dolce Vita. I love them and will probably purchase Orgasm but I do wish they had a more true pink shade.
Weekend plans – not too much, though on Sunday, we’re taking one of my best and oldest friends out for brunch; she fell off her bike and broke her nose and BOTH her wrists at the end of April. She was completely incapacitated – even things like washing her hair – she was having to go to the hairdresser’s twice a week for a hair wash! Anyway, she’s healing up slowly and we want to spoil her a bit.
Last book I read: Joanna Trollope’s City of Friends and right now, I’m reading the newest Ian Rankin “Rebus” mystery and enjoying it a fair bit. Kinda like visiting with old friends (unsavory ones who drink too much, smoke too much and also are involved in all sorts of Edinburgh seamy side of life goings-on but still, they’re familiar!)

Genevieve Avatar

That’s very kind of you to take your friend out – it must have been awful for her to brake both wrists because you just can’t do anything independently. It’s good to hear that she is recovering and it certainly takes a long while.
I’m a big fan of Ian Rankin’s Rebus mystery books too – I have the whole collection. I am saving his most recent book for a rainy, cold day here.

Mariella Avatar

Genevieve, isn’t it funny how his books seem perfect for cold, rainy days? I’ve listened to a few of them as audio-books too and the Scottish readers just add to the enjoyment. One of his books – Door Open – was made into a “made for tv” movie which I was lucky to be able to get my hands on. It starred Douglas Henshell (who plays Jimmy Perez in the TV adaptations of the “Shetland” books by Anne Cleeves and who is a really good actor). I was so looking forward to seeing it but was so disappointed in how it was chopped and changed. Another mystery writer I like is Kate Atkinson – her Jackson Brodie series is really good and a lot of fun.

Genevieve Avatar

I must try Kate Atkinson – her name is familiar to me. I’ve probably seen her books in the local library. I just love Ann Cleeves’s books and TV series Shetland and Vera. She also has a non fiction book out about the Shetlands and where she has set some of her tales.
The whole Scottish Noir books are fascinating to me.

Lindsay_MK Avatar

Kate Atkinson is the best! The Jackson Brodie series is wonderful but she’s also written multiple that are not part of that series that are equally good. Always surprising how little she is known here in the US.

Haul:

Viseart Theory Palette II Minx. This is making me very happy.

Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster. I am hoping this can be a substitute for the similar SkinCeuticals product, which, going back to the question about really expensive products, is the only thing I have been willing to spend over $100 on. Actually I would spend over $100 for prescription retinoids but I don’t have to thanks to Canadian pharmacies on the Internet.I

Sephora Rouge Balm in Gentle Coral. I just picked this up a few hours ago. The Viseart palette made me long for something brighter.

With the Viseart, I got a sample of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder but it has not converted me to powder highlighters for my aging skin. With the Paula’s Choice, I got samples of the Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer and the YSL Vernis a Levres Glossy Stain. I have not tried these yet but they should satisfy my current desire for brighter lip colors.

Week-end plans: The farmer’s market, a manicure, and making some progress on a knitting project, accompanied by a lot of Netflix.

Last book I read: Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. Cheryl Strayed, the author of Wild, was/is an advice columnist and this is a collection of her columns. As with Wild, I was moved by the personal journeys through pain to the other side.

Tammy Avatar

Viseart Theory Minx–a great choice. I love SkinCeuticals vitamin C with ferulic acid and I try to find other products to replace it, as it cost far too much for what it is. The reason it is so effective and why they can charge top dollar is due to the pH. Other products have the same ingredients, at a different pH, which renders them less effective. Of course SkinCeuticals got a patent on their formula, leaving other companies with inability to do exact copy. The closest option I’ve found is Timeless 20% C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum, which is very affordably priced. I use a bottle of this, then alternate with SkinCeuticals. Vitamin C serums are only good for 3-4 months (until they change from clear to yellow/gold) so I don’t like investing a great deal of money in a product that has such a short shelf-life.

I am curious, what are your favorite highlighter brands and formulas? I love powder highlighters and have not found a liquid highlighter I love…yet. Please share your application method as well, as I have found that how you apply something is just as important as your choice of product.

Wild was such as good book!

Lea Avatar

For liquid highlights I like the Armani Fluid Sheers and the Chantecaille Liquid Lumiere formulas. I put some on the back of my hand and then use my fingers to dab and blend on cheekbones, bridge if nose and cupids bow.

Lesley Avatar

Thank you for the background on SkinCeuticals. It is the same situation with idebenone, which is the ingredient in Prevage. Only Elizabeth Arden has the license and charges through the nose for it. My research is that idebenone is better than Vitamin C alone as an anti-oxidant but that the C E Ferulic cocktail is better at preventing sun damage. I thought that in addition to the pH, SkinCeuticals uses a form of Vitamin C that is less irritating. I will see how the Paula’s Choice works. I use the stuff up within 4 months because I put it on my neck and chest so at least I don’t need to worry about it losing its effectiveness.

I don’t have a favorite highlighter. My skin has always been really oily and I’ve always had large pores and highlighters look awful on me. Sometimes I dab a little in the outer corners of my eyes or at the corners of my mouth to get a bit of lift. I generally use whatever sample has come along. I had several creams from Benefit, a Laura Mercier powder, some YSL Touche Eclat, and radiance primers from Laura Mercier and Nars, which work as highlighters on top of foundation. The YSL probably is the best for my skin type because it doesn’t register as shimmery on me but I have yet to buy a full size of it.

What was the last book you read?: Democracy by Condoleezza Rice and also Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. I read them both simultaneously.

Rachel R. Avatar

All that MAC lip stuff: Wow!!!

Haul: The UD Naked Heat Palette arrived yesterday. Medusa’s Make-up sub box: Totally Baked Eyeshadow in Tubular; Lip & Cheek Stain; Lip Stick in Fuchsia; Eye Dust in Jail Bait. Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet third anniversary collection, “”Worst. Heroes. Ever.”

Weekend plans: Stay cool! We’re supposed to have the hottest days of the year so far this weekend. Temps will be in the triple digits. 🙁

What was the last book you read?: A collection of Philip K. Dick stories on my Kindle.

Genevieve Avatar

Melbourne is so variable in temperature, some summer seasons start as early as October, whilst others don’t get going until January. Over the last decade or so we have been getting much more humid weather in summer, which is awful.
Hopefully the weather will change in a day or so. My favourite summer words are ‘the cool change is coming’.

Nancy T Avatar

That box is HUGE! Mellan being a good sized dog, and it next to him? Wow! ?

Haul: Ordered my Hada Labo Plumping Gel Moisturizer from Amazon since Ulta no longer carries it, and it’s my favorite nighttime moisturizer. Also ordered an acrylic makeup organizer from Amazon, too. Went of a ColourPop binge and bought: Banana Daquari, As You Wave, Deep Dive, Lil’Boat, Blowfish and an empty 12 pan palette. Picking up Tarte Make Believe In Yourself palette today, as they’re holding that for me.

Weekend plans: Nails (that new nail polish from Pure Ice P2 tore my nails up! Arrrghh!), hair (should be easier shorter…but no), meeting on Sunday. Trying desperately to stay cool!

What is the last book you read? It has been FOREVER since I’ve sat down and read a novel! But I do still read a chapter of the Bible almost every night. I actually love reading, but my eyes don’t. #VisionProblems

Deborah S. Avatar

Haul: Ulta: Smashbox Liquid Lipstick in Babe Alert. Love the color but hate the texture. Started drying, cracking and flaking within 15 minutes. I will try to make it more emollient by adding a gloss and just wearing as lipstick. I know that defeats the purpose but I do love the color on me and since I don’t usually think I look good in these types of colors I am willing to work with it. Also picked up about 10 different face masks from all different brands. In particular Tony Moly. I tried the Lemon Mask for brightening last night and enjoyed it. Not sure it does anything but feels and smells very clean. Tarte Rainforest Shadow Palette #2. I like #3 but already have several of those types of colors and I have never tried the Rainforest line. Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss in their new shade, Mermaid. I have one other and like it a lot, Tarte Rose Gold eye shadow and Laura Geller Island Escape eye shadow palette.
Walgreens: NYX Bright Liquid Liners in 3 shades whose names I cannot remember but are the light lavender, deep purple and smoky blue color. Soap and Glory de-puffing eye cream and the new and well hyped Paradise Waterproof Mascara from L’Oréal. I am wearing today for the first time so will see. I don’t think it gives me as much length as my Cover Girl Lash Sensation but I think it gives more volume so if it doesn’t give me raccoon eyes or flakes I may use as first coat and then CG as final coat.
Sephora: Repurchase of Sunday Riley products Good Genes, Ceramic Slip and Tidal for both my daughter and myself. UD Naked Heat palette for my daughter and so that I can try it out and see if I like it. Laneige Two Toned Lipstick in Magenta Muse, Milk Blurring and Red Blossom. Kat Von D Alchemist palette x 2, one for my daughter and one for myself, Korres Rose Brightening Sleeping Mask as 100 point perk and samples of Dior Capture Total Dream Skin Advanced, L’Occitane Immortale Divine Cream and Hourglass Ambient Light Powder.

Weekend Plans: I had back injections on Wedneday, my daughter had her wisdom teeth out today and my ex-husband who lives with us had shoulder surgery about 3 weeks ago so we are all having a quiet weekend.

Last book read: James Patterson “Private London” . Re-read Jane Eyre.

Haul: elf studio highlighter brush, the sunscreen foam by Coppertone because I was extremely disappointed to realize that the new one by Supergoop contains a ton of citrus peel oils :(, and I ordered the Nars Bord de Plage palette.
I’m also returning the Nars Sunwash Diffusing Bronzer in Laguna today, not because I’ll get one in the palette, but because the surface hardened and I’m not able to pick up color on my brushes anymore! It looks almost glazed, I don’t know what happened, I never used a damp brush with it. Has anyone experienced this issue? I’ve had it for 2 month and used it 5-6 times.

Weekend plans: a combo workout tomorrow (spinning + strength training), and probably the beach on Sunday!

Last book read: I used to read a lot, but sadly a lot of my attention has turned to the internet… Last book I read was a crime story in French, I can’t remember the title or the author!

He’s 9.5 years old, and with all his health problems, we honestly did not think we would have him this long. We are continually surprised by his energy level and desire to play — I am counting my lucky stars every day we have him!

What made you decide on the Takumi series?

maria Avatar

I am so glad he is doing so well but it’s because of how well you take care of him and all the love you give him; he is a happy & loved.
I picked the Takumi series because of all the good reviews they received. I love goat brushes but these are suppose to be very soft goat but yet I think they will hold up well. I like to wash my brushes after one use.

Tammy Avatar

Maria,

I hope you enjoy your new Chikuhodo brushes! I did some major damage to my wallet on Chikuhodo brushes this year and I enjoy them very much. My favorite is the r-c2 blush brush and the GSN-9 eyeshadow brush. I also picked up the Takumi T-1 powder brush and the T-6 powder brush. The T-6 plays a small but important role in my eyeshadow routine: I use it to add a touch of the lightest shade of eyeshadow to the inner 1/2 of my eye at the end of my look. I already have my eye make up on at that point, but the T-6 is like using a finishing powder at the end: It smooths everything out and makes it look finished. I am somewhat new to Chikuhodo brushes and do not have a world of experience (when a single brush costs $120 I can’t afford to have a world of experience) but the goat hair used in the Takumi line is incredibly soft, in my opinion. I have the GSN-02 powder brush, which I believe is squirrel and supposed to feel softer on the skin, but my Takumi powder brush is softer.

I really want Bobbi Brown’s Santa Barbara!

Two replacements:
BITE Beauty Sour Cherry Lipstick — used up the small Xmas promo one
MJ Gel Liner in Black — used that one to the nub too.

Paris!
I am just back from two glorious weeks on vacation in Paris. Our third trip in four years. It is my favorite place on earth, and living there for a time is the only thing on my husband’s and my bucket list. The beauty, the people, the culture, the energy. Sign me up!

A few observations — for fun. 🙂

Makeup:
I spent a lot of time observing and photographing this trip. Without hesitation, the makeup look in Paris right now is the “no makeup makeup” approach. Young to old. Truly, I did not see one woman with identifiable makeup of any kind — not on eyes or cheeks. They wear it, but it was all very subtle. The exception is the French woman’s iconic red lipstick. A very natural lip was seen a lot in the daytime, but at night red rules.

Clothes:
Parisian women look stylish — every day. It’s hard to describe, but you know it when you’re there. A big, big color tone this summer is white or cream, especially in dresses. Cream or white monotone top to bottom was seen a lot. The other big color is yellow. That color (near one’s face) looks terrible! IMHO. Exception is on our beautiful darker, skinned sisters — they can rock it. Lordy, my advice to myself — find any yellow top and pitch it! lol

I wondered if the off-the/one shoulder trend would be popular there as it is here, and it is. You see it on all ages — and I mean all.

The temps dip a bit and the scarves come out.

Shoes:
Shoes are a “thing” in Paris. You will never see a Parisian woman in running shoes, ever — not in the grocery store, or at dawn when no one is out. They wear sneakers, yes. But they are stylish and mod. Cute ballet flats are everywhere as are wedges, wedges, wedges.

The Men:
The men are equally stylish with tailored, pulled together looks down to the shoes.

I don’t buy makeup in Paris since I can get it in the States cheaper. I did get three nice tops from shops that are only open abroad and don’t ship to the US. For our anniversary (#36!), my husband took me to Hermes for a scarf and to Lubin for a perfume. I got the classic scent Gin Fizz, which I am loving.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed we can go back next year! Wonderful, wonderful trip!

Tammy Avatar

Linda,

So glad you had a good time in Paris and happy anniversary to you and your husband! (I loved the photos on instagram, they prove your “stylish everyday” comment.) Are you planning to live there?

I don’t know about paying the same amount of attention to my clothes and shoes as I do my make up. I do like running around in gym shoes, a pair of jeans or shorts, and a t-shirt on the weekends. (Actually I love staying in my pajamas all day and have been tempted to wear them to the grocery store, lol.)

LindaP Avatar

Hi Tammy!

It was so much fun! It’s good to still have fun with one’s husband. We all need those times to reconnect and touch again all the reasons we know why we’re still together. Our plan is to live there for at least six months once the work world is behind us. Come hell or high water we will try to make that adventure happen.

The women in Paris do wear jeans (mostly not), but if they do, there is always something that sets it apart from how I look on the weekends. 🙂 The top is more stylish. Maybe it’s a silk, loose blouse tucked only in the front. A t-shirt with an interesting neckline or collar. It might be an accessory (although they keep those to a minimum too). The shoes always make a statement. They do wear shorts, but mostly it’s cute skirts and dresses (flow-y or more fitted shifts) instead. As you saw in the pix, they look nice — every day. I cannot think of a time when I have ever seen a woman (or man for that matter) in gym-like attire. I think they’re allergic to it! 🙂

Shoes are the big thing — and it is a “thing.” You will see cute sneakers, but never, ever running shoes. I have terrible feet (bunions) so that whole shoe thing and me is a challenge. But I figure it out, and get nice, supportive walkers that I rotate through. No heels for me in Paris, though, unless I’m getting in and out of a taxi. 🙂

I love Justine Lecontes French series — and a lot of what she posts on color, makeup, and fashion. Here are her 10 tip for dressing Parisian, and she is right on from what I’ve seen. Tip #3 — lol! https://youtu.be/gAbV5hJzhL4

33 pounds of MAC? Lucky. Mellan is still better.
No makeup this week, but waiting my Sephora order from the app event. I picked up the Ciate London palette that I missed out on last holiday, so really excited for it to meet the rest of my palette family.
I’ll be working on Saturday, Sunday is up in the air, though. No definite plans. I do plan on going all KonMari on my house, though, since I just got copies of Marie Kondo’s two books.

Haul: Some double-ended brushes from It Brushes for Ulta: Heavenly Luxe #7 (foundation and concealer) and a set with two double-ended eye brushes (shadow and crease, smudger and liner) and a travel size of the It Cosmetics Superhero mascara because I’ve heard so many good things about it.

Weekend plans: Packing for a two-week trip to London and Edinburgh. We’re leaving on Sunday evening.

The last book you read: I read The Handmaid’s Tale (in one day!) a few weeks ago so I could watch the show. Currently reading Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander series), 1984 (for work), The Paris Wife (for fun), and Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone (as a part of Pottermore’s new Wizarding World Book Club.) Christine, you should really give Harry Potter another shot! The first book is tame but the series doesn’t disappoint– but I’m a huge Potterhead so I’m biased, I guess. 🙂

Haul: Make Up For Ever Skin Equalizer Primer in Mattifying and Smothing, and the Urban Decay De-Slick Primer

Weekend plans: Going to the beach on Saturday and Sunday (as I live 10 minutes away) and also going to the summer festival that started on thursday here on the island!

What was the last book you read?: Actually I don’t remember the name lol

At first glance, I thought what Is Mellan doing in the department store? LOL. Your neighbourhood must be really cool! LOL.

This is why reading is very important.
Haul; Fine art supplies, My parents just came back from Vienna, Prague and Budapest and brought back beauty products and more art supplies so I will be playing this weekend.

I also have started the first draft of some sewing patterns to create some things for my nephew, niece and her doll.

Mellon standing guard over your precious new purchases – how adorable is he?

Haul: Priceline, our major budget beauty retailer, is having a massive skincare sale (they also sell a lot of higher end skincare products too) and I am going along this afternoon to see what goodies I can pick up.

Weekend plans: Shopping and will probably have the family over on Sunday for dinner.

Last book read: I am an avid reader of both fiction and non fiction and the book I have just finished is one by Peter May on the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It’s a beautiful place and I would love to visit it. The author has set a number of his fictional works there and this is his factual account of the places he had visited.

Haul: Definitely went a little overboard this last week and a half since I got back from Chicago . . . Jouer Skinny Dip Palette, Colourpop + Alexis Ren Topaz Palette (as a dupe for the Kylie Skinny Dip Vacation Palette), and Sonya Esman Super Shock Cheek Palette (super impressed with the formula), Nars Hydrating Glow Tint, Dose of Colors Eyescream Palette, Kat Von D Alchemist Palette and Lolita Blush/Eyeshadow, and Anastasia Pro Brow Palette (for my freelancing kit). Plus, I got a 20% off coupon at Ulta, that will be going towards the Anastasia Lip Palette very soon (again, for freelancing).
Weekend plans: One of my close friends just graduated from high school, and her graduation party is tomorrow. Other than that, just work work work.
Last book I read: I started a book of short stories called “Madinah” which is a collection written by different Middle Eastern authors revolving around the concept of cities (which is what “Madinah” means in Arabic). I haven’t finished it yet. I have about four more stories, but so far I really like it!

Tammy Avatar

MacKenzie,

I have been very interested in the Anastasia Lip Palette ever since I saw a salesperson wearing the most beautiful shade of lipstick at Ulta three months ago! Looks like you are going to have lots of new goodies to play with this summer.

Haul: 2 K- beauty sheet masks from a member of one of the Fb beauty groups I’m in. One gold leaf, one cacao. I’m on a no – buy at the mo.

Plans for weekend: perhaps go swimming, perhaps go to a science theme centre as my MIL got us vouchers. other than that not a lot. My daughter and I have finally recovered from a horrible cold that knocked us for six and lasted 2 weeks. My fiance also got it but not as bad.

What was the last book I read? Probably a chick lit one, I don’t have the energy or focus to read a proper novel lol.

Tammy Avatar

Lea,

Wow, that’s a great Viseart haul! Have you had a chance to use any of your new goodies? I am interested in the Natasha Denona 5 pan palettes, but I usually read mixed reviews on them, so I don’t end up purchasing. What do you think of the single eye shadows?

Lea Avatar

I’ve had a chance to use Chroma and Petit Pro and really love them; it’s what made me finally decide to go ahead and pull the trigger on the Cool Matte. I like the Natasha Denona shadows – they’re worth the hype for texture and pigmentation. I’m not ready to say I’m completely in love with them yet though. My first look with the 5 pan got muddled – that may be user error though and I’m okay to admit that. I need to keep working on it before making a true judgement. I’m not sure I’ve ever complained about a palette not having enough mattes before; I love pearl and shimmer finishes, but the #2 5-pan has one matte shade so I struggled to get a distinct look with it. Your question inspired me to try again and I think I’ve got a better look with it today, but I think it would benefit with another palette or singles brought in to give more depth. I’ll take a few shots and put it up on discord for you.

The single shades are gorgeous of course! I had a hard time narrowing down to a few shades and ended up with all metallic and pearl finishes, but not for lack of trying. The new mattes that she has released in the Star and Sunset palettes are not available as singles which I find frustrating. Her current grouping of mattes is small and not really shades I’d want (apart from the one in the 5-pan I’ve got). I very much hope she releases her newer shades in single form; however, financially speaking I’d be better off just buying a palette.

Haul: Urban Decay Heat Palette, Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita. I ordered the UD Alkaline eyeliner and Scorch lipstick yesterday; I hope they get here fast! Weekend plans: spending time with some of my many nephews today, and visiting my son tomorrow. Last book I read: Stephen King’s Bazaar of Bad Dreams.

Anne Avatar

Haul: I picked up the NARS Orgasm lipstick and a bunch more of the Lancôme Matte Shakers in Pink Power, Red’y in 5 and Kiss Me Chérie. I think I now have 6 of the 7 shades and the 7th one, Yummy Pink, isn’t to my taste so will take a break for now XD.

Weekend plans: Mostly just hide from the heatwave here with my semi-okay AC. It’s not as bad as some places right now, but it will be in the 100’s and that’s no bueno for my chronic pain.

What was the last book you read?: It’s been a while since I’ve read a physical book as I can’t really hold them anymore, but I read a lot on my computer. But my memory is currently quite muddled (yaay meds) so I’m not entirely sure. It may have been Parallel Myths by J. F. Bierlien or re-reading Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. Or something from Neil Gaiman. Yaay for brain fog?

Tomorrow, I want to go to the movie since cinema tickets are cheaper for 4 days here during a film festival…

Last book : Elizabeth George Believing the lie

Haul:
Everything I had ordered last week finally came in, so yay for unboxing and organizing.
Unhaul/sending off to Project Beauty Share: MUFE Nudes You Need palette, Makeup Atelier 5 pan palette (came in a Lucky Box from Beautylish), Manny MUA palette and Neutrogena facial cleansers/moisturizers/sunscreens, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Giving away the eye shadow is hard and this is the third box I’ve packed with them in it and then taken out and thought “next shipment”. I never reach for any of those palettes, though but I WANT/MUST/COLLECT/HAVE/STARE AT ALL THE EYE SHADOWS. This is where only buying from a few brands really helps me, because if nothing else, it just doesn’t look right in my displays/organization amidst all the uniformity (silly, I know, but it works).

Weekend plans: It was my birthday on Thursday and I don’t remember anything past 7:30 but from what I do remember, it was a lovely day with my best friends. Short story long – I am a red wine lover but anything over 2 glasses and the next day is horrible. For whatever reason, I do not get physically hungover (sick) but I get an emotional hangover – this horrible despair and worry and racing thoughts. In my mind, I know it’s unreasonable and everything is fine and I didn’t do anything wrong, but I just feel like everything is wrong and hopeless. It’s awful, almost debilitating for a few days. I know alcohol is a depressant but I think the emotional effects of a hangover are definitely not as talked about or known as the physical. Anyway, I had read somewhere that red wine especially can exacerbate or cause feelings of anxiety, so when we went out for a lovely late afternoon birthday lunch, I thought I’d stick to sparkling wine. It was a good plan but 2 glasses later and I’m snoring. Friday I recovered and then went and volunteered at an animal sanctuary in the evening. Today is giving myself a manicure and then going to get a facial at 2:30, then coming home to leisurely pack. Sunday we leave for our annual girls’ trip to Las Vegas.

What was the last book you read?: The Midwife’s Revolt by Jodi Daynard. I enjoyed it but it would not be the type of book I normally read. I think I’m the only one in my book club that likes urban fantasy and suspense, everyone else seems to really enjoy historical fiction or non-fiction. I listen to them on Audible when I’m toodling around town or during my commute. It was difficult at first because my mind would start to wander but after a while (or at least after I finally became interested enough in the book), it has been easier and I find it a nice mental break.
