What is your current hair routine?

I’m currently using Ouai’s Volume Shampoo and Conditioner every two days. I don’t do much else to my hair, but after I wash, I’ll spray It’s a 10 and then let it sit in a towel to air dry for about 30-45 minutes, then blow dry Dyson’s dryer.

Up until really recently I hadn’t done anything special with my hair. I was a strawberry blond when I had chemo back in 2000 and I would color my hair about every 6 weeks just to keep any grey hairs from infiltrating. After my chemo my hair came back pretty grey with a little of a dark brown/black in the back. Very strange. I decided not to recolor my hair because I was worried about all of the chemicals in hair color. So, I just let my hair grow and used whatever shampoo and conditioner was on sale. Recently I noticed an increase in hair loss and noticeable thinning on my crown and the back of my head. In fact, during a recent trip to Glacier National Park with my daughter she hesitatingly told me that there was a pretty bald spot on the back of my head. So, I went to Ulta when I was in Missoula and picked up a shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment for “noticeably thinning hair. It is called Nioxin II. I have only been using for about 3 weeks so don’t know if it is helping or not but I also made an appointment to see my Doctor to see if there is anything else I can try. I know about Minoxidil but not sure if it really works and I know that once you start using the RX you have to keep using it or hair loss will resume. If my Doctor recommends then I will start using Minoxidil.
As for my actual process, I use to wash my hair daily, since I was about 17. I am 63 now and that is a lot of hair washing! I have cut back to about every 3 or 4 days as my hair does not seem to be as greasy as it use to be. I use a dry shampoo occasionally if I need body for a particular hairstyle. Since my hair loss I have cut back on the use of any heating tools. I will use a wand for curls around my face maybe once a week and I make sure to keep it well away from my scalp.
If anyone has any great ideas for slowing hair loss I would love to know. I am not a fan of coconut oil on my head as a cardiologist told me that coconut products are not good for the heart, even topical use, so I am not using coconut anywhere on my body.

I understand ur problems actually all of them. I have been a Cancer patient for over 14 yrs. I have Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma a type that’s slow growing but not curable only treatable they say. I have beat it 5 times so far. I have had a bone marrow transplant, radiation two diffeeent times and so much chemo I quit counting. There has been times I have done on cpl yrs every month plans. Right now however I’m in remission haven’t had treatment for over cpl yrs. last Yr about this time I noticed I was losing a lot of hair. Well my husband of 30 urs left is I have one son still at him about to graduate. He hadn’t worked in a cpl yrs and couldn’t handle the stress. I’m on disibality. Don’t get very much. We rent r house and have two older sons helping. I went to the doc and for a check up and she said she thought it was stress. I m on meds for thyroid and it was ok. I also won a shampoo and cond and serum from a blog Giveaway called Trith Vitality. I’m. It sure how much it helped? But my hair loss is less. I didn’t have any bald spots either. Always have had thin hair and the chemo I take doesn’t cause me to lose my hair. I have only lost it once during the transplant of course. But I think what has helped me more is washing my hair every other day. I have oily hair and though it’s not as oily as used to be my hair is healthier it feels like. I do color my hair I’m almost 50 and I would completely white by. Ownthanks to hereditary. But I’m ready for that. I tried to it go. I can’t. I don’t color but every cpl months even though the roots show. Just don’t get it done like I should. But I wash and cons my hair. I just got a sample of Nioxin to try. But I have used the L’Oréal Clay one that’s new. I make sure to rinse my hair the after I get all the cond with cool water also. To close the cuticles. I brush it before washing Also. To help. I don’t do a lot after that. I let it air dry and rarely curl it or blow dry. I hope that gives u some tips. I think washing more often has helped the most. God Bless.

Thank you Joyce. Sorry to hear that you have been battling cancer and dealing with stressful situations in your personal life, also. You have been in remission for 3 years so that is great. I know stress can cause hair loss and I assume that some of mine is related to that but I do have thinning hair in the family. I just started taking oral Biotin daily and plan on looking into a couple of other oral supplements. Thank you for your suggestions and I wish you continued good health.

Oh wow I just read on Ultas site about the different numbers of the Nioxin Shampoo and cons and I have a sample of 1 and used it and liked it. It was quite minty. Lol only word I can think of off hand. But I color my hair and it wasn’t made for that. Hope it didn’t fade the roots too much. Thank u for kind words and hope all is Better soon with U. I have never taken Biotin or know much about it. But I think I will check it out with my doc and see if that would help me also. Lots of luck to U. And will be praying for U.

Because my hair and scalp tend towards dryness, I only wash it once per week. And because it’s (still) past my bra strap, it’s an ordeal! I shampoo with Matrix Biolage Moringa Oil Blend shampoo, condition with Ogx Keratin Oil Conditioner or if it needs more heavy duty conditioning, then Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex 10 in 1 Hair Masque. Towl dry, followed with Shea Moisture African Water Mint & Ginger Detox & Refresh Leave-taking Detangler, comb through, put it up in a topknot, wait a bit, comb some Verb Ghost Oil and One N Only Keratin Smoothing Lotion through and blow it out straight.
If by chance my scalp gets a bit grungy, I do have a Batiste Dry Shampoo for dark/deep brown, or a Matrix Biolage Conditioning Cleanser for curly hair if I’ve really worked up a sweat during the heat.
Tomorrow, a load comes off my head, God willing! ?

I wash every two days too. I’m using up a shampoo /conditioner. Maui Moisture. Not really impressed with it. Then I comb with a wide tooth comb and put in a hair oil. Hask Argan Oil. I scrunch it through the ends

I wear my hair relatively short. I wash it every second day (preferred brands are Aveda, Bumble & Bumble, and Chi) . After drying it with a towel, I use Aveda Phomolient and a brush to style my hair and I let it air dry. Once dry or near dry, I use a texturizing cream to shape it or Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil to smooth frizzy/flyaway hair.

Simplicity itself! I wash my waist-length hair every other day with Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner and just let it air dry. I do occasionally use a blow dryer, but only when I’m doing something special with my hair and need a bit more root lift. The Blue Malva combo keeps my grey hair looking like sterling without the dreaded blue cast that can build up from using a lot of the cheaper products for grey/platinum hair. Every few weeks, I apply Trader Joe’s coconut oil, let it set several hours, shampoo it out, and get ready for compliments;-)

Depends if I’m going to wear curly or blow out. If I blow out I use Matrix Curl Please shampoo and conditioner and towel dry to get excess water out. I scrunch with Deva Curl Cocunut Curler, my HG for scrunching. First time ever having pretty curls. Actually made me love my curls! If I blow it out I use Redken Frizz Dismiss shampoo and conditioner. Towel dry to get excess water. Apply Redken pillow proof spray and then Redken Rebel tame to wet hair and put in a towel 5-10 min. Blow out and that gets my hair pretty straight. I have wavy/curly hair. Its Frizzy if I air dry without gel.

I use one of two Redken shampoos — for color treated or volume, condition with opposite conditioner (if volume shampoo, then the color treat conditioner or vice versa). Phyto Actif volumizer on roots, dry hair with enough looseness to get volume from layers, a touch of a Tigi Maxxed Out on ends for volume/boost, and lastly once over with Nioxin hair spray for fine hair. For reference: my hair is very fine but there’s a lot of it (i.e., no thinning issues) and I have a long face, so I keep it cut in a mid-length layered bob.

Brush it, pull it back, and wash it a couple times a week, My hair is thick, coarse, dry, wavy only in certain sections, and generally too much trouble to bother with. I’d get it cut, but I hate short hair on me, hate the upkeep, and about 99.9% of the short haircuts I like at all are perfect for fine hair that’s not too thick, but terrible for my hair.

I just got a haircut with a #3 clip all along the back and about an inch and a half off the top. My current hair routine is shampoo and air dry–normally I use conditioner but it’s been so hot that my hair just wilts with the brand I have. Gotta love pixie cuts ? Before I cut off 11 inches, I remember using a Garnier leave-in conditioner and hair serum–and I concentrated them in my roots. Worst idea ever. My hair was heavy and greasy but I thought it was ~fashionable~ and ~good for my hair~ in my fifteen-year-old brain. Yikes.

I alternate several shampoos and conditioners, mix n match, shampoo every 4-5 days:
Pre-treatment: sometimes I use a nickel-size of olive oil on hair (ears down) before washing.
Shampoos: OGX Niacin, Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength, or Garnier Fall Fight.
Conditioners: OGX Coconut (ears down), or Generic Value Products Detangler.
Have repurchased, and will continue to repurchase, all of the above products.
Air dry and/or a rough blow dry.
A discontinued silicone smooth and shine treatment (dime-sized) that’s somewhat anti-static as well.
Am very slowly learning how to use more styling tools. The YouTube demo’s make it look so easy ………

I have soft curls plus plenty of volume so many people tell me to let it grow but is a lot of work to keep neat and healthy. Experimenting I had real bad highlights done last Summer which burned my hair awfully it took me a good 5 months to get it back to decent once again. I just ended up cutting it short! Not pixie which I love and might do it again. I have high cheeks am being petite with a matching petite oval face so it does suit me I’m also very active and run less miles now that I’m taking a brake from crazy marathoning but I know I’ll end up running another it is just so addictive and hell of a lot of fun. One of my hubbies cousin has curliest and longer hair than me in beautiful condition so I asked her and she uses Deva Curl and Marc Anthony moroccan oil. I have not tried them yet waiting to finish products I have already have but have tried Aveeda products and they are awesome. A bit pricey but worth it! I used to wash my hair every other day and it was on the drier side. Also colored it more often now I let some gray hair show and color less often unless I have a party or some fancy outing. Specially after the highlights disaster I only wash it once a week and is back to being nice and soft. Thank goodness! Oh! Shea butter from Target is also awesome I think it helped moisteruze my back back to goodness.

I rotate between 3 different shampoos and conditioners: Redken’s Colour Last, De Lorenzo’s Voluminous and Make Protein Voluminous. Even at my age (60+), I still have oily hair at the roots and I need to wash it every second day.
Sometimes I use a dry shampoo, but I hate the way it makes my scalp itchy.
I hardly ever blow dry my hair (it makes it too oily).

Seraphine Avatar

I used to color my hair all the time, but after going through chemo quite a few years ago and losing all my hair, I decided to keep the natural color once it grew back. It’s starting to go gray and I like it. People often ask me if I had highlights done! My hair is dry, so I wash it about twice a week. I switch my shampoos around, sticking to sulfate-free. I use Pravana Nevo Intense Therapy Leave-In Treatment and a volumizing mousse (no particular favorite brand at this time) before blowdrying, and AG Firewall before flat-ironing.
