Survey Says... July 5th, 2017
Happy Wednesday! Here's this week's survey, which you can copy and paste and share as a comment.
- What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
- What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
- What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Good, sensible review (no “OMG this is the best evah!” squeeing) of new products, with swatches and how-to looks.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Hauls. Who cares what you bought; what good does that do anyone?
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Nothing. Most beauty videos are a waste of time. Bah, humbug! 😉
Susan, your first 2 answers pretty much summed up many of my feelings!
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Chatty get ready, favorites
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Hauls, anything about hair/skin/nails
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Quality picture/lighting, good speaking voice, humble/approachable personality. Mixed use of drugstore & high end products & not much “Instaglam” looks.
My favorites are: Lisaeldridgedotcom, Pixiwoo, Frmheadtotoe, Kathleenlights, Denitslava, Alannaramaa, & TheFancyFace
Favorite type of video to watch : beauty tips and tricks. Not necessarily a get ready w me bc they tend babble and not necessarily a tutorial bc I usually want to sit through the 20 minutes of a full face
Least favorite video : hauls, what’s in my bag, first impressions and PR/box openings. Sometimes Anti Hauls bc they tend to miss the point and are too negative. I just don’t care about seeing what you purchase. First impressions are meaningless to me. Come back when you really used something, worn it in various weather conditions and after a day’s work. Also don’t care for sponsored videos or those who talk mostly of products they have affliate links etc. You’re biased and I’m not looking for that!
What males me suscribe: I tend to unfollow more and more bc I find few know what they are talking about and they lack honesty or integrity. I guess I hold influencers to a much higher standard bc they take such a personal approach. You want to be real, show people a part of your life but then aren’t honest and are shady…Um no. But I do follow those who I can relate to and are closer in age or a bit older. They tend to bs less bc they’ve seen the trends come and go, have a stronger sense of self and they aren’t suckers to marketing ploys etc. They have more experience in general. Not knocking those under 25 but I guess I come to things from a different perspective. Want and expect different things now that I’m in my 30s.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
A video where we’re actually taught a new technique or a new perspective, or a useful non-biased review! I like YouTubers who offer different looks for different face shapes, eye shapes, skin types, for people with acne or scars, etc. That’s what separates the quality videos for me.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
I hate when people put up videos and call them “tutorials” when they’re really just videos of them putting on makeup. Nothing annoys me more than a 6-second video of someone putting on lipstick (you know, the way we’ve all put on lipstick for a century) and having the audacity to call it a “lip tutorial.” It’s not a tutorial, you haven’t taught anyone anything. I also hate reviews that are either clearly biased/sponsored, or when someone says a product is bad because it wasn’t created for their skin type. I see people with very oily skin try products specifically created for very dry skin, and then call them “crap” or bad products. Basically, I just want videos that have a larger scope than just the YouTuber’s personal preferences and traits.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
If their looks are unique and creative, if they have variety in their looks (so many YouTubers do the same looks over and over and over), if they have unique and useful tips and techniques. For example, if a YouTuber did videos on how to cover acne, how to cover extreme dark circles, how to do eyeshadow on different eye shapes, etc., I’d be much more likely to subscribe than to a YouTuber who just does a hundred identical makeup looks, only on themselves, and never offering tips on how to modify looks for different skin tones/types/face shapes/eye shapes.
Absolutely agree about influencers who are clueless about the product they are reviewing. I’ve seen far too many who use products not meant for them and give a negative review. That’s an immediate unfollow for me!
Or when someone gives something a bad review because they don’t like the color. I’m not talking about criticizing a product for a poor range of shades, especially in a complexion product, because that’s a very real problem, but when someone says (for example) a lipstick is bad because the color isn’t flattering on them. Okay, but that doesn’t make the product or formula bad! It’s very frustrating for me.
You pretty much summarized everything I feel about beauty Yourubers and what I look for! Out of curiosity, what ones do you subscribe to/recommend? I feel like more often than not, the ones I seem to find recommended by others aren’t necessarily what I’m looking for.
Oh gosh, what an silly typo haha. YouTubers*!
I like Stephanie Nicole, since she’s very factual and methodical in her reviews, down to ingredients and cost per gram. Meghal and Natasha are sisters with a channel and they do really unique, editorial looks, often with drugstore products! I don’t really watch Pixiwoo (not sure why, never got around to it) but a lot of people seem to like them and just based on their video thumbnails they do seem to put out some variety. I honestly haven’t found a ton of YouTubers that I really do like!
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? I find thorough search-and-review videos most helpful, so I can get an idea of what a product looks like on, with the bonus of seeing exactly how it was applied- aka if it was a reasonable application or piled on.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? People with over-the-top personalities who talk too much and are clearly self-obsessed (basically, most of the YT “gurus”). Also, this is a peeve, but people who have something messy in their video and then call it out and apologize for it. Like, “sorry about my dirty hair, but…” or, “excuse the messy room and sound of a lawn mower, but…” Just wash your hair, clean your room, and shut the window before you turn on the camera!! Jeez!
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? They have to be enjoyable to watch (hopefully there’s a little humor) but most important of all is honesty. I don’t want to watch someone who raves about literally *everything* just so they get PR samples.
I agree about the “sorry about my dirty hair, but . . .”. You knew you were going to film, get everything sorted before you start.
I’m okay with them having messy hair, room etc. But I agree with you that I don’t want to see them apologize. So what? To me, it makes them more relateable that everything isn’t perfect. Just go on with your video and don’t apologize.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Mainly hair (4a/4b relaxed) and beauty reviews
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Ads disguised as ‘reviews’
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? When videos are to the point, talks about product, and give honest feedback
The only one I watch is Hot n Flashy because she does looks for mature skin and she samples and reviews tons of products. Of course, Angie is drop dead gorgeous and has the figure of a model which is definitely not like me but her look books are fun to watch, too. She really works hard at getting it right. I’ve watched a couple Wayne Goss videos about skincare.
I love her also.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Empties
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Get ready with me
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? I’ll be honest. I can’t watch anyone with an annoying, high pitched voice
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
–Anti-Hauls! I thoroughly enjoy people who can honestly say “you do not need this product” because I feel that there are just SO many products, especially now, that are being sold out because of this like mob mentality like “she has it, I MUST have it” (cough peach palette cough)
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
–Hauls. Most of the time they haven’t used the product much so they can’t say how good or bad it is. You’re just showing me what you have.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
–Similar coloring, trustworthiness.
Favorite type of video: Reviews. I like fun reviews, with a bit of humor. Tati is one of my favorites because she provides fantastic reviews but injects humor in it as well. I especially like seeing wear of a product, so check ins at the end of a video is a good bonus to me.
Least favorite type of video: Hauls. Like everyone else, it doesn’t matter to me what you bought. And frankly, it smacks of bragging to show off your $1,000 Sephora haul. I can’t relate and I don’t bother to click on those videos.
What makes me subscribe: Well, I prefer a YouTuber closer to my age. Tati, Bunny, Jackie Aina, they’re funny ladies and they’re also in their late 20’s/early 30’s. I don’t relate to a girl who’s 22 and has the skin of a 16 year old. My skin has matured over the years and I want to see products on faces that look like mine.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Favorites/HGs. MUAs.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Most all of them. I’m more than tired of the narcissism and commercialization.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
When they’re honest, have thoughtful information to share, and are genuine.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Reviews and tutorials! Introductions to a new or not well known brand are quite interesting, too. Or when a vlogger addresses a very serious issue going on with a brand that serves as a PSA for the rest of us, when done without sounding like they’re having a mental break!
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Hauls and anti-hauls. I don’t need to see a huge pile of someone’s loot or see the inside of their purse! Or conversely, hear them go on some angst fueled rant, either. (Disclaimer: *some* rants are quite entertaining if done with edgy humor! Ie; Kimberly Clark!) And puhleeze: I do not need or care to listen to either a maudlin whiner or someone telling us TMI about their personal life!
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Their honesty and integrity regarding reviews (Allura, Emily Noel, Phyrra). Personality and demeanor also counts for something, which is one reason I keep watching certain ones (Emily Noel, XSparkage, Jackie Aina, Tarabynz).
I haven’t found anyone I can be bothered to spend 10-20 minutes of my life watching. If I want to see a new technique, brands usually provide short, informational videos on how to use products. If not, whatever’s on YT ends up on blogs or boards, so I’m not missing anything. I don’t wish to go into the profit aspect, but I find it bothersome.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Usually reviews, tips or general hints by someone I consider smart. My list is whittling down smaller and smaller (suggestions welcome 🙂 ). I watch Dominique Sasche (my age), but I don’t watch her all the time. I adore Justine Laconte for general beauty and fashion–huge fan of her French series. I do often like Puffins Wife too. Wayne Goss is often OK, but when he’s hawking products (like Char T) and pretends it’s objective, he loses credibility with me. Karima can be helpful, but I don’t watch her all that often. Emily uses brands I don’t usually have much interest in.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Long ones! Get to the point in a few minutes if you can. 5-6′ tops. If you have to go to 12′, divide it up. Caroline Hirons knows her stuff, but her videos are a hot mess. 20 minutes?! No thanks.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
See above. I click the unsubscribe button at the first sign of annoyance. 🙂
I really enjoy watching videos that I can learn from, like technique demonstrations and sharing information that isn’t widespread.
I don’t tend to watch too many PR unboxings/preliminary thoughts. A bunch of people get identical packages simultaneously, and watching them all talk about the same products for dozens of minutes isn’t worth my time. If I’m really interested in a product, I’ll watch maybe one or two videos about it from someone honest; with clear, accurate photography; and tastes similar to mine.
I really value honesty and disclosure and appreciate a good sense of humor (YouTube is entertainment, after all) but also…I’m the kind of person who finds the strangest little things unbearably annoying. So if someone’s personality/voice/mannerisms bother me, I don’t usually want to make myself sit through their videos!
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Reviews; makeup tutorials; special effects makeup; historical makeup; “perfect palette” tags.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Unboxings and hauls, ” get ready with me” (especially if they’re described as “chatty”), first impressions, “what’s in my purse,” most tags.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Consistently unbiased reviews and information; appears trustworthy and marks sponsored content; appealing personality; good sound quality. Incredible makeup skills if they don’t do any (or few) reviews.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? It varies on my mood but lately I’ve been more into critical and genuine product reviews, declutters and anti-hauls as it makes me want to not buy as much, and conversely also sometimes hauls just to see the pretty.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Lately it’s been tutorials. I feel like everyone is doing the same thing with the same palettes and it’s like, bruh, get creative.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Personality has to seem genuine and not just spouting brands they obviously don’t care about, not having a grating voice (that’s a real pet peeve of mine), and not only talking about high end stuff. I also like when they will give bad reviews of things (Jessica Braun/JAMBeauty89 being a perfect example of pretty much all those things).
I have two favorites. The first is “Top *insert a number and a category of product*. For instance “Top 5 Summer Blushes”. The reason I tend to enjoy these is because they usually touch on products that have been out for a while that I may even have but just need to be reminded to use. I had been totally ignoring my single eyeshadows when I saw one of these and it felt like Christmas every day because I was using things I forgot I really liked.
My other favorite falls under the follow-up to hauls or favorites. Marnie from Msgoldgirl started doing videos about past favorites from a few years ago, whether the products had stood the test of time or if she has moved on. I’ve seen hauls done this way too.
I like tutorials and some GRWMs too, depending on the YouTuber.
Least favorite are hauls, especially PR hauls. It feels like I’m watching a commercial because a company has initiated the action. Even regular hauls don’t do anything for me, just not enough information, Also not something I will sit through are Favorites that are filled with products received as PR. (although I have unsubscribed to the ones that did that a lot so I’m not running into that as much)
The two qualities I look for in a YouTuber are integrity and relatability.
At one time I subscribed to almost twenty beauty gurus, now that number is seven and only one (EmilyNoel83) has a large subscriber base, I tend to enjoy creators who have careers outside of YouTube. The more “pro” it gets the more I feel like it’s just one long commercial that I’m subjecting myself to.
My favorite beauty video to watch: On beauty & skin care with straight forward reviews and swatches. Must have good audio and video or I won’t watch. I like it to be about the products mainly I don’t like when there is too much talking and long drawn out video’s.
My least favorite type of video to watch: Long drawn out video’s about beauty products!
What makes me subscribe to a beauty YouTuber: Someone who is good at talking about a product precisely and they show very good swatches and get to the point why I like and why I don’t. Audio is loud & clear and the video is also. I don’t like to much chitter chatter about nothing!
I have to agree with everyone so far. I watch to learn something whether it’s technique or product performance. I’m not into hauls or GRWM videos. I tend to look for ladies with my coloring, both hair and skin. I don’t necessarily believe in some of the rules with regard to what ladies my age are “allowed” to wear so the age YouTuber isn’t as important to me.
I will hit unsubscribe or delete quicker than anything if the YouTuber is vulgar or profane. Just can’t tolerate either. And can we get them all to stop the “fishy face” once they’re done.
Some that I have found helpful for at least one technique are Christen Dominique, Carli Bybel, Jessica Braun, Nikki Tutorials (with sound off) and Nikkia Joy. I do like Jaclyn Hill for eye makeup tutorials, but sometimes that’s with the sound off too.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? I like edgy, runway style looks far above natural beauty or instaglam, but I’ll watch anything if it’s from someone who is talented and has an appealing manner. I don’t usually watch particularly closely anyway, as I usually just like to have a tutorial going as I put on my (completely unrelated) makeup for the day or take the subway home.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Being one of the over-25s of the internet, I don’t vibe with the extra extra bubbly, cutesy personas that seem to appeal to younger viewers. It feels a little unreasonably high energy to me, and maybe it’s just me not understanding being a kid anymore, but it can easily come off as unnatural or affected. I also don’t tend to watch guru’s non-makeup application videos. The only super personal videos that I can remember liking are the Pixiwoo ones about domestic violence and illness, which I thought were brave discussions about stigmatized subjects. I hate the Wayne Goss’s videos with the clickbaitey titles that are really just 15 minute stretches of talking shit about women’s makeup. He has a very soothing voice and hedges a bunch about, “This is just my opinion. Remember, it’s just makeup, who cares?” then talks in circles about how ugly x or y is. He’s right, of course, that it IS just makeup, and it’s valid not to like trends. I don’t find it offensive or immoral, just really unappealing.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Some combination of technical skill and demeanor.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Simple how to do a certain eye shadow look and please know the name of the palette, the name of the shadow shade (or number if no name is given to the color, none of this “the purplish one” or the third one)
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? The long, drawn out BS ones that use the first 10 minutes to talk about nonsense-just get to the tutorial already.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Short, to the point, knows what product they are using without having to look at the product three times and stuttering the name of the color, brand name etc. And be real, I have unsubscribed from the phony-constantly smiling youtubers, they are fake.
What’s your favourite type of beauty video to watch?
I don’t tend to watch a lot of beauty videos as such, but I have googled some of the eye shadow palettes that I own to see what some of the beauty youtubers have done with them. I always like Phyrra’s because they are often so informative. Occasionally I have watched Wayne Goss too because I like the way he explains things and can learn a trick or two.
What’s your least favourite type of beauty video to watch?
Ones that just talk about their haul – a tad boring.
Those that talk about nails and hair products.
Those that are sponsored to promote a product – they give the upside but not the negatives.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
I don’t subscribe to any youtuber except Phyrra’s website.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Lately it’s been nail art tutorials!
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? This has been an issue lately and I’ve recently just cut all of my subscriptions except for 3 makeup tutorial you tubers for the following reasons:
a. Look at the camera when you are ‘talking to me’ – don’t sit there and contantly stare at your face on the monitor. The inherent vanity in that is so annoying. I don’t mind a look here and there to make sure you’re not getting lipstick on your teeth, but the constant checking and preening is a total turn off to me.
b. Can we do away with the hyperbole and the exaggeration? OMG I’M SO OBSESSED I LOVE THIS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS SO PIGMENTED SO AMAZING LIKE LITERALLY YOU GUYS OMG LOOK AT THIS I DIE. Speak intelligently and give logical explanations, for Godsakes. A simple “This will be the look I’m giving a tutorial on today, thanks for watching!” and then start your content – is that so hard??
c. Any video longer than 3 or 4 minutes – not because it’s not informative, but at that point it seems like they just like to hear themselves talk or look at themselves. I’d watch it if the dialogue is purposeful and . . .not slangy. It’s exhausting waiting for most of them to get to a point.
d. The personal/grwm/chatty videos. “Let’s have a chat! Again, the inherent vanity repulses me. It’s very needy, in a way; to me it speaks to someone needing everyone’s adoration (be sure to like my video!) and undivided attention but that them just babbling on camera is enough for their part of the interaction. I don’t like the attempt at “let’s all be besties! How are you all?” when they don’t really care, they just want the views and the audience. Just shut up and get on with the content already.
e. “So I’m having kind of a bad day so I thought I’d come on here and make a video for you guys”. I don’t know how to explain why this offends me, but it does. I think it’s (again) the neediness. . .”I’m feeling like crap and I need some attention but I don’t want to connect or it to be a give and take, I just want my own needs met so everyone watch me and like me, k?”
f. Some youtubers do that whole slow motion voguing thing at the beginning of their videos and I have so much second hand embarrassment for them. It’s like a full 2 minutes and it’s gross. I appreciate the look at the camera and then left to right so you can see the dimension and the colors, but the modeling, vamping and music . . .it’s repulsive to me.
Rant over ??
3. What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? I like someone who stays on track and delivers content (for me, it’s a tutorial). I don’t really want to know about you personally because I recognize that this is not a friendship, but an exchange – I’ll give you a like if I like your content and you don’t act like an idiot. There have been a lot of channels that seem promising but then they either get bored or life happens and they can’t keep up with their posting schedule or they keep changing content. Keep it clean, professonal, well-edited and concise and I’d be a loyal subscriber.
Amen to the “OMG I’M SO OBSESSED I LOVE THIS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS…”! It gets so too much sometimes that you think, guuurl, it is makeup, stop being so over the top! Most of them do not even try to act like they are genuine, they just need to say these cliché phrases.
Exactly – they are talking a lot and saying very little.
What’s my favorite type of video to watch?First impressions with follow up, New products releases put to the test, favorites from someone more mature (no one in their 20’s).
What are my least favorite beauty videos to watch? PR hauls and hauls in general. One YouTuber comes to mind – she’s on this quest to try out a ton of foundations and only show them as they are applied with no follow up. Videos that are chatty or get away from the theme, tutorials where the makeup is applied wrong or someone wears make up that doesn’t flatter her.
What makes me subscribe to a beauty video? Someone who is thorough, concise, well-informed and personable. I enjoy emilynoel83, tarababz, Tati, Jen luvs reviews.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Definately tutorials by the tried and true make up artists like Lisa Eldridge or Pixiwoo. Don’t get me wrong, I love a ridiculous haul video, but I more so want to learn from the professionals.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Collaborations. I DON’T CARE.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? They’ve taught me something new, they’re honest and relatable and don’t take themselves too seriously.
I am going to preface my answers with the comment that it takes a lot for me to unsubscribe if I have subscribed in the first place.
Favorite type of videos:
1. I actually really like a well done haul video. Queen of the haul videos is Tarababyz. Tara buys a lot of high end makeup. She buys everything, no PR. She gets straight to the point. She swatches and compares where applicable. She frequently has a little “demo” at the end using some of the products if they lend themselves to being demo’d. I like watching her haul videos for many of the same reasons I read this blog. She buys a lot of products that I wouldn’t even know existed if I didn’t see it in her videos or read about it here on the blog. I like the exposure to things that I wouldn’t necessarily know about. I don’t want to sound redundant but I live in a town with a population of less than 200. The nearest place to shop for makeup besides Almay is 3 hours away. When I am going to make that drive to buy makeup I want to know what to is new that I might be interested in. I don’t have time or the luxury of going and wandering around Nordstrom’s, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, etc. to see what might be out there. Hauls and the blog are how I stay in touch with what is new and out there.
2. My second favorite type of video, (and I know I am cheating sneaking a second favorite in!), is skin care videos. I have older skin. I like to see what other people are doing and what products they are buying and the effect these products are having on their skin. Top channels for skin care: Gothamista because I am super into Korean beauty trends and Hot and Flashy. Renee from Gothamista has been in the beauty industry for her adult like. She knows skin care, what ingredients are good and bad and she has a beautiful speaking voice. Angie from Hot and Flashy has amazing research skills. She uses the products for months before reviewing them. She is well spoken and just has her life together.
Honorable Mention to Lisa Eldridge, Karimma McKimmy and Sharon Farrell.
Videos I dislike: Anyone who is loud, long winded and verging on obnoxious, LOL. I don’t subscribe to these “gurus” although I may watch a video or two to see if they are any good.
How do I determine who I subscribe to: They must be well spoken. I like them to be knowledgeable about their topic. I like thorough reviews.
Addendum: Just my personal opinion. I see a lot of people mentioning PR videos, commercials and sponsored videos. I honestly don’t care how the person gets their products. I don’t care if their video is sponsored. If I feel that they are honest and trustworthy, and I wouldn’t be watching them if I didn’t feel they were, then I am just interested in their thoughts on the product, seeing them use it and being able to see the recommended application process. I am NOT going to run out and buy a product because some beauty guru who is sponsored or not, says it is wonderful. I wouldn’t buy any product they say is amazing whether they bought it themselves or were sent the product! I am going to do my own research, see the product myself or look for multiple reviews to determine whether the product is something I might be interested in trying.
Tarabababyz is a gem! This girl loves and knows her makeup and does the videos without having to answer to any of the companies. Can’t get over how vast her collection is!!! Love her, the Pixiwoo ladies, Lisa Eldridge and Tati. Nikky Tutorials is also a sweet-sweet girl, but the makeup she does is too over the top for me 🙂
Totally forgot to mention Jacklyn Hill. I love this self-made girl soo much that I let anything she does that I would normally see as too much, playing on public, etc. slide as some unavoidable parts of what she does. She is just THE success story and I like that she did it all being open about stuff to the millions of her followers and staying true to herself as much as it is humanely possible.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Favorites, reviews.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? First impressions. I don’t care what someone thinks when they’re using a product for the very first time! You can’t judge if a product is good or not from applying it once.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Good video quality, honesty, friendly personality.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Good sensible review (like those by Tati Westbrook)
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? What I eat in a day. Seriously, who cares?
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Honest approach
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? I really like watching colorful eyeshadow tutorials!
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Super long videos or what’s in my bag? types.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? Their personality mostly, and then probably their lighting/set up.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Thorough, un-biased reviews/swatch videos, or educational/technique-based videos – this goes for skincare as well! Some of my current favourite YouTubers are Liah Yoo, Lisa Eldridge, Wayne Goss, Allura Beauty, saywink, and ashxl. I also LOVE the new trend of anti-hauls. Jackie Aina is great for critical product/marketing analyses.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch?
Chatty get ready with me’s or hauls/monthly favourite videos – I’m not interested in promos for new releases/novelty products without any type of swatch or review, and there aren’t a lot of YouTubers I like enough just to hear them chat.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber?
Good quality editing and visuals that aren’t too washed out (so many YouTubers are filtering themselves into oblivion these days, the end result is always hard to see and not true to colour), thoughtful reviews, and ideally the appearance that the person hasn’t “sold out” and is providing honest content despite any success. And I appreciate the scientific method in all types of review videos, haha.
Oh! And Stephanie Nicole. She does great reviews and some interesting colour theory videos as well!
I love the “what’s in my trash” videos. I want to know how a product performs over time and whether it fits into daily life. You can know that only after using something for awhile. My least favorites are the hauls and anti-hauls. I try to be thoughtful about purchases and resist the new for the sake of newness. In theory, anti-hauls would be helpful but I think the YTs who do them are not really analytical. Since I could waste hours on YT, I look for those who provide good information first and foremost. Not all of them reflect my personal style and some are much younger than I am but if they have something interesting to say, I like the different perspective. But I most value those who are closer to my age.
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Tutorials with looks that look hard to recreate, by professional makeup artists.
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Fashion videos that just show off a look. Or maybe hauls.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? I subscribed to pixiwoo, because they are runway makeup artist pros and so well spoken and intelligent!
What’s your favorite type of beauty video to watch? Well? I guess product reviews and tutorials using a specific product or two. Declutters are also fun, but not all of them 🙂
What’s your least favorite type of beauty video to watch? Really don’t like when beauty gurus make favorite videos where they include food, clothes and other random stuff thrown together with the beauty products. Also, it is annoying when it is obvious when the entire favorites video was made to showcase a sponsored product.
What makes you subscribe to a beauty YouTuber? I would not be able to point out exactly what, but I guess I like when they act naturally, I detect “try hard” very easily and it puts me off. Of course, stuff they talk about also influences my choice.
Favorite type of video: PR Hauls, Favorites, Products I didn’t like, Empties, and Subscription unboxing. I love PR the best because I get a chance to see what’s new first.
Least Favorite: Tutorial, unless it’s something I struggle with, like last application.
What makes me subscribe: The topics they cover and their personality. I have subscribed to people because YouTubers I already love collab with or recommend them, but if they bore me within the first 3 minutes, I unsub. I really think we take subconscious cues from different speeds, tones, and dialects of speaking, as well as mannerisms, and some appeal more to me than others. I also don’t subscribe or unsubscribe if they aren’t well-spoken, don’t know brands and products (usually not the big YouTubers) or just generally don’t appear intelliegent. I’m ok with squealing, but not with the reading level or vocabulary of a 6 year old.
And there I go having a typo on “intelligent.” One other thing that makes a difference for me: I am more likely to subscribe to an animal lover, especially if they don’t promote brands that aren’t cruelty free. And I wouldn’t subscribe to someone who was generally negative or bitchy. Fortunately only one beauty YouTuber comes to mind. Most are very positive and bend over backwards not to offend people.
