NYC Union Square Eyeshadow Palette

NYC Union Square IndividualEyes Custom Compact ($4.99 for 0.33 oz.) is an excellent choice for an affordable, neutral-themed palette. Though it’s marketed as for “brown eyes,” I think it would work well with a variety of eye colors and skin tones. It contains four eyeshadows, an illuminator, and eyeshadow base.

The eyeshadow base worked a treat when I wore it under these eyeshadows — no creasing or fading for the twelve hours I tested the product out for. The texture was creamy without being slippery and the product more opaque than not, so it worked well to create a solid base for the eyeshadows. I didn’t find the illuminator as useful, as it is a little glittery and almost tacky, so it was a miss for me. Both of the products are cream-based, so you may find that excess powder from the eyeshadows travels over as a result of the palette’s design.

All four eyeshadows were really pigmented and soft to the touch. They were a touch stiff to blend, but I was still able to blend them out for the most part–not perfect but good. The shades included are: an eggplant purple with red undertones and soft silver sparkle, bronzy brown with a golden bronze shimmer-sheen, medium-dark neutral brown with a matte finish, and warmed ivory beige with a satin sheen.  I did a look with this palette here.

i’ll definitely check this palette out. i bought an nyc waterproof eyeliner the other day (smokey plum) and i LOVE it. it’s one of the creamiest non-tugging liners i’ve used yet. it’s great quality—i was a little skeptical of the brand because of the price, but i tried it because of the formula. i can’t use some eye liner brands because i get an allergic reaction to certain ingredients. lucky for me, the wet ‘n wild & nyc pencils don’t contain those ingredients (i.e. i’m a cheapo & so now i don’t have to spend $20 on liners! haha). the nyc pencil itself is nicer than w&w and the pencil consistency is fantastic. i have found my HG liners! so now i’m excited to try the shadows, too! 🙂 xo

I’ve always seen these but passed them up because I wasn’t expecting much. Its especially surprising that the primer worked well. They need to sell it by itself! Thanks so much for the review!

That’s cute! I haven’t used anything NYC in a while, so I may have to check this out. Question, though: Since they’re “soft” shadows, did you notice any crumbling of the shadows? I’ve had that happen before with “softer”-textured shadows :/

I really like this palette! Completely agree with the illuminator. I’m honestly considering de-potting it just for the sake of not having it there. Sad but true =( But on the bright side as cheap as this palette is already I ended up getting it for free when I picked it up at my local CVS. No I didn’t five finger discount it! SMH, I used my CVS extrabucks thingy. So ladies and gents don’t be ashamed of using those coupons or savings cards coz nothing is better that knowing you getting new makeup for less!

I’m glad to hear that the primer worked for some people. I go the palette for green eyes and the colors are very nice and pigmented but the primer ended up making everything fade to a brown (though the palette had mainly red/purple toned colors) within about an hour or so. Not to mention I used the illuminator for my inner corner to brighten up my eyes and after I washed the makeup off I had little white bumps around the areas that I placed the product. So sadly I won’t be using that or the primer again but for the quality of the shadows and price I might by another palette ^_^

I was just wondering is the ‘all over lid’ color a dupe for Urban Decay’s Buck in the NAKED Palette? I am desperately looking for a dupe since they do not sell Buck on its own! 🙁

I used this palette up to the pan! Well, maybe the bronze color and the primer. I really liked the primer and would use it with other shadows I have. It would be neat for NYC to make that separately as I’ve not found any cheaper drugstore brands with a primer that works as well. Not as good as UD primer potion or NYX HD primer, but it held my shadows for a full workday.

I bought this awhile ago, and the primer creased on me within about an hour. I have pretty oily eyelids, so maybe that’s it. After trying it multiple times with the same result, I finally threw it out. The shadows are ok, but they didn’t blend easily, and I have to get ready for work fast enough that I wanted something I didn’t have to work too much with. But it IS cheap, so if it works for other people, it’s a good buy.

This palette is awesome! I am so happy to see that you reviewed it. 😀 I am totally rethinking my perception of NYC since finding that palette, trying the Topaz sparkle dust, and the extreme glider lipglosses.

What I’m loving lately is their polishes. Those skinnier bottles are their new quick dry polishes. They really do dry quickly, and are opaque in 2 coats. Love ’em.

P.S. depotting those shadows is heartbreaking – the glue doesn’t unstick easily. My purple crumbled, and the bronze cracked a bit. 🙁 I’m gonna go pick up another one though, since those two colors are soooo nice for blue-green eyes.

Oooh. So pretty!!! I’ve always wanted to try NYC brand cosmetics, but just wasn’t sure how they would be. Going to run over to Duane Reade during my lunch hour & see if I can pick this up. Thank you, Christine!

I got this palette for Christmas and forgot I had it. It gets a big thumbs down from me. The colours don’t show up on me. I’m Mac NC45 for reference! Prefer the WnW Vanity!!

I completely agree!!! I went out and bought it after this review but I was extremely disappointed! You get wht you pay for! The color had faded in 3 hours and was completely gone in 7. =(

i have always been in love with these palettes, i know theyre not the best but i certainly love them esp since they include some mattes, satins, metallics. It makes a look complete. I love this one esp for the dark maroon, it adds warmth to a look, love it for fall & the mid skin tone color, beautiful. i think they are pretty great esp for the price!!
