How do you know when it's time to replace a makeup brush?

How do you know when it’s time to replace a makeup brush? Have you? How often?

I don’t think I’ve ever replaced one!  I’ve only repurchased a brush so I could have multiples of a certain type of brush.  It would be time if a brush seemed to apply product differently than before – perhaps density lessened (as bristles fell out), loss in shape, or a loose ferrule.

Thanks to Nancie for today’s question!

I’ve never replaced a brush before but I think when the brush doesn’t perform the same quality as before then it’s probably time to replace the brush

Like you, I haven’t had to replace one yet but I guess for me, the indicator would be lots of shedding, to the point where it was no longer effective.

I think I, too, have thrown away one. The handle fell out of the ferrule. I probably could have even just glued it back and been fine, but I have so many other brushed that I figured this one didn’t owe me any more. I decided to let it be at peace amongst the used tissues and other yummy finding of the bathroom trash can, lol.

I’ve had three MAC brushes that I’ve had to throw out because the bristles in the middle of the brush got runied. I’m not sure what happend but they got all matted together and started falling out. It’s happend with my 224, 129 and my 182, all have black hair but also recently i’ve noticed my 217 isn’t as thick as it once was.

I’m really disapointed because i’m not a makeup artist, I’ve only had the brushes for maybe 4 years and don’t even use them everyday! I took excellent care of them aswell, I wash them with baby shampoo once a week, put them back into shape and leave them to dry naturally.

What am I doing wrong??? and has this happend to anyone else?

Me too. I’ve never thrown one out. I’m sure at some point I will though. Even the loose farrel thing, I’ve glued farrels back on. I know that sounds really cheep of me but brushes are expensive I want to get all I can out of them!

I need to replace some make-up brushes but that’s because they are extremely cheap quality ones and are kind of rough instead of soft. Other than that my nice one(s) don’t need to be replaced.

I haven’t found the need to at all. My oldest brush is a MAC 190 and it works just as good as it did the first day I got it. I have purchased a few extras of my favorite brushes.

I’ve never had to replace a brush, not even the cheap ELF ones! I take really good care of my brushes, and I really get as much use out of them as I can. I haven’t had to yet, but if a ferrule came loose I might just KrazyGlue it back. No point in throwing a brush out if there is only one minor problem that can be easily fixed

When the bristles start shedding while applying makeup or when washing them and when the brush head separates from the handle…time to go!

All of my brushes have been falling apart at once lately. I decided to be cheap and buy a sigma set to replace them, but I really dislike most of the brushes and find them of quite shoddy quality. 🙁 That’s $100 down the drain, and now I’m too broke too afford a new basic set of mac brushes. Sad!

Oh that’s so bad! I love my Sigma brushes.. Ok not as much as my Mac ones but still, they do the job!

I replaced two brushes: a cheap kabuki from Wal Mart. All the hair fall off! And a stippling brush from Quo that I had for like 2 years.. It was bleeding, shedding and the handle was loose. I kept the old one, to use with powder products. I bought a new one for my foundation 🙂

I love my sigma brushes. It’s too bad. Maybe the old quality was not that great but I just ordered my new sigma set and I am very happy with it expect the $40 something shipping I had to pay. (I live in Canada and I ordered over $200 worth of brushes)

I’m looking for advice. I just bought my first two high-quality makeup brushes — MAC 217 and 239. The second time I went to use the 239, I noticed the ferrule was loose. I live nearly an hour away from the MAC store and don’t have a day off anytime soon, so it would be a hassle to take it back, but considering I spent $25 on the brush I’d like it to last. Do you think it’s likely to get worse or to affect how well the brush functions? Should I return it?

Christine Avatar

If it’s a little loose, it shouldn’t affect the function, but you may want to double check to make sure it dried properly (though I would return it you somehow find the opportunity). To ensure it doesn’t get worse, make sure you minimize any water getting lodged in the area as well as any brush cleanser (which may break down glue).

I haven’t ever had to replace a brush because it wore out on its own. Of the ones I recall getting rid of one had the handle fall out and one fell in the toilet. I’m more likely to replace a brush just because it annoys me.

Am I the only person who has bought a crappy brush (price is this issue here) and had to throw it away because it wasn’t worth taking up space in my brush holders?

Also, I have had to retire an eyeliner brush after 4 years because it had loss it density and didn’t perform the way it used to so it deserved to be retired.
