Have you ever been surprised at how good/bad a product was based on the brand?

Have you ever been surprised at how good/bad a product was based on the brand? Perhaps a brand that you expected little from was very impressive or a brand you thought was tops fell short.

I gotta say that Clarins’ Barocco Shimmering Powder was surprisingly bad for a high-end brand.

Thanks to Krystel for today’s quetion! Got a question idea? Submit yours here.

Oh my gosh, HUGE 2nd. At under $5 (CAD!) per eyeshadow pan, Annabelle blows. my. mind. I’m not ashamed to say that I have more Annabelle than MAC in my collection (and that I reach for it more often)! :o)

Ani_BEE Avatar

Are you Canadian?

Annabelle is part of Marcelle Cosmetics in Montreal and the have some really nice products.
I love their Gentle Make-up Remover for Sensitive Eyes and their basic day and night cream from the Essentiels line I got from there Holiday sets. I gave my Mom the Clay Mask since she was really interested in it. ^_^

Gen Avatar

im from Montréal too and looove Annabelle and Marcelle! Especially when they have their warehouse sale! Annabelle makeup is everything under 2$!

Ebontien Avatar

Sweet, more Canadians! I’ve never tried Annabelle but now I might have to since they’re part of Marcelle. I’m a sucker for the seasonal collections!

Alexis Avatar

Yes, I was surprised at how much I love my wet n wild palettes and liquid liner. I was also surprised at how much I hated MAC’s Atlantic Blue. I usually love mattes but this just wasn’t cutting it for me.

Marquie Avatar

Yes, I absolutely hated MAC’s “Shockaholic” e/s from Dare to Wear. On the other hand, I was very impressed with Wet n Wild’s long wear matte lipsticks.

Sheena Avatar

I agree with this as well. I love the actual color, but I also know that if I’m going to wear it, I need to give myself extra time to apply it.

Mai Avatar

I’m constantly getting surprised by how amazing Wet n Wild products have been lately. They had an amazing run with the Holiday Eye Kits and now the eyeshadow trios. I’m rather liking being pleasantly surprised about them!

JoElla Avatar

Wet and wild have new 8 pan palettes coming out, as well as a whole bunch of of new goodies.

Wet and Wild is like the little brand that could and never lets me down.

Principessa Grassa Avatar

Me too!!! Wet ‘n’ Wild was basically a joke when I last tried their products in high school (mid-late 90s). Holy cow, they’ve come a long way! I’m impressed with pretty much all of the Color Icon shadows, and some of their nail polishes are pretty decent as well. Not bad for a buck!

Ms. Jimmi Avatar

I was deeply disappointed with MAC’s Grease Stick in the Art Supplies collection last Spring. Ugh. It is work to get them on your eyes. It is a sad mess. I was surprised by Milani’s lipsticks in how well they wear. MAC’s eye shadows are starting to leave me cold and UD’s shadows are rising in stock, esp. their deluxe eyes shadows. So buttery and smooth. Nars has been a disappointment too. Sadly, their products are not worth the money anymore. The shadows are less pigmented, the foundation is too much like a bad drugstore brand and the Orgasm Blushes just rub right off.

Krystel Avatar

I was very shocked at how good the Luxiva body moisturizer from Merle Norman is and impressed with the finishes of Joan Rivers nail polishes from QVC. Not impressed with Amazing Cosmetics concealer. Big waste of money for me.

Heather Avatar

I wasn’t expecting much from Wet N Wild eyeshadow trios but they are surprisingly good! I got Cool as a Cumcumber which is a green/purple look. The eyeshadow is matte but not chalky, blends easily and is well pigmented. I recommend this product!

DizzyChris Avatar

I’ve been surprised with just how good the wet n wild nail polishes are. They are a bit sheer, but have lasted longer and dry faster than the more expensive drugstore brands I’ve tried out.

Quinctia Avatar

All my favorite eyeliners are sold in drugstores, I’m pretty amazed. While UD beats out the competition in amount of colors available, I have good Milani and L’Oreal dupes for the pencil formula.

But…it turns out that my favorites aren’t even pencils. Physicians Formula Gel liners are great products and allow me to use my ultra thin brush to get the tiny line I require.

And the L’Oreal HIP Kohl powders are a holy grail for the waterline. They do not budge.

I thought Seche Vite was a lot of hype, but I have tried it and I think I love it.

Chelsea Avatar

I agree with the eyeliners – Urban has a better color selection, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see how creamy and long-lasting both Milani and L’Oreal were.

sri Avatar

Yes..I swear my face loves the baby bath gel as a cleanser
I ever underestimate baby oil as eye makeup remover, but when I try it, baby oil was awesome, and it’s cheap.. 🙂

Jenna Avatar

Haha I’m literally about to do a blog post on this! Recently purchased MAC Paint Pot in Painterly and it makes my eyeshadow crease so bad!! I was really surprised as everyone raves about the paint pots. Seriously, I was using my Maybelline Pure Cover Mineral concealer as a base before I got this and it does the job better!!

Blog: http://girl-in-spired.blogspot.com

Evelyn Avatar

That’s so weird! I have no issues at all with Painterly, in fact I wore it to do an event from 5am until I got home at around 8PM (lots of walking in the heat and let me tell you that’s a challenge for makeup to stay on b/c I do sweat & my lids can be oily) and my makeup looked exactly the same at 8PM as it was freshly done in the morning.

It just goes to show how things work differently on everyone. For example everyone raves about the Benefit shadow liners. No matter how little I put on they invariably crease and migrate during the day.

gigi Avatar

Definitly. I think this happens a whole lot with drugstore brands because a lot of people relate price to quality.

I was extremely happy with those small square rimmel blushes for $1.69! No chalkyness.

And dissapointed with stila eyeliners. They smudge on me like no other.

anonymous Avatar

I know. do not know how dior can charge $60 for a poorly pigmented foundation that has a TINY shade range…. should have stuck to EL or gone w MUFE or coverfx 🙁 that one hurt bigtime.

anonymous Avatar

(the airspray– I think the others are fine. but why not the airbrush when they don’t have to worry about competition because it’s pretty much them or temptu which isn’t very portable)

dani Avatar

I was totally disappointed by “twist of tartan” eyeshadow palette from mac’s collection this winter. the color pay off is so weak and it can’t blend to save it’s life. shame, because they’re such pretty colors.

Rengirl Avatar

I recently ventured into the world of theatrical makeup and I have nothing but raves. I’ve been using Graftobian HD Glamour Creme with Ben Nye Neutral Set and my face never looked so flawless (while still looking natural). Ya’ll gotta try this stuff!

Steffy Avatar

Totally agree with you re the Graftobian and Ben Nye! Great stuff and not pricey like I expected, in fact, less than a lot of drugstore brands.

Alina Avatar

Agree on wet’n’wild palettes – pigementation, color choice and staying powder are awesome. My biggest disappointment was guerlain mini meteorites. Also, I absolutely hate Borjouis in terms of quality and price.

Jeanne Avatar

I like being pleasantly surprised by drug store products. They’ve come along way since i started wearing makeup many years ago in middle school! I bought an Almay Intense I-Color Powder Eyeshadow trio a couple of years ago and I still love it.

MaryBeth Avatar

I love MAC, but I am always surprised at how bad the pigmentation is of the palettes that come out in their collections i.e. the Caviar Dreams quad from Cham-Pale, all of the A Tartan Tale palettes, etc. I just don’t understand how some of those can be so horribly pigmented when MAC makes awesome eyeshadows.

monika-luiza Avatar

lancome fatale mascara was a bad disappointment for me, as nearly every cheap brand managed it to produce a good or at least okay plastic /silicon
comb/wand. but lancome as a high-end and for me even THE mascara brand produced such a crappy product, I still don’t get how it could pass quality control or consumer-tests.
I am impressed with some products od drugstore brands all the time. it’s like every drugstore brand has 1-3 products that are really amazing, the rest is so-so or really bad.

anonymous Avatar

so true! all I like from maybelline is concealers but they’ve compared well against almost every high end one I’ve tested. revlon I mostly only like the lipsticks & polish. loreal mascara & powder (but if I had to buy shadow from drugstore I’d prob do loreal/hip)
the only thing I ever liked from cover girl was a cheekers apricot blush in hs but it was really pretty
and the HG foundation was the ONLY sally hansen product I could ever stand using lol

Mar Avatar

MAC dissapointed me a lot with the Greasepaintstick from the Venomous Villains collection. I bought the Doctor Facilier in dirty black but the first time I used it, I found it very hard to blend (a lot of glitter and a very stiff concistency) and it broke the minute I used it.

I’m pleasantly surprised by some of the Bourjois foundations; especially Healthy Mix and Healthy Mix Serum. The blend easily, have good staying power and they make me look glowy instead of shiny :).

Vicki Avatar

I was disappointed in two of the three Stila eyeshadows I bought recently. Dahlia doesn’t blend and Wisteria wasn’t as pigmented as I would have liked. Or was it the other way around. On the other hand, I love my Annabelle eye kohls.

lawli Avatar

the wet n wild coloricon eyeshadow palettes. bought them because people said there were mac dupes in there.
i was not at all expecting them to be more pigmented och smooth than mac eyeshadows but they are 😮

Evelyn Avatar

I was surprised at how awful Stila’s travel palettes were, even for $10 ($13 here in Canada). As for pleasant surprises, I really like Revlon Colourburst Lipsticks! They are really fantastic.

ChristineD Avatar

I recently tried Dermalogicas tinted moisturizer and it is amazing…I have great skin most of the time but it tends to be dry so I have never been able to find a foundation that doesnt flake on my face but also contains SPF and gives decent coverage….this tinted moisturizer is fabntastic gives just a bit of coverage, with sunscreen and a bit of glow….sheer awesomeness!

Alexis Avatar

Wow, I need to try out Wet N Wild stuff. I tend to stay away since I never really heard anyone say anything about it before (good or bad). Anyways, I am really liking the Revlon lipsticks lately, and the Maybelline Dream Mousse line. Also, Prestige liquid eyeliners rock!

Bonnie Avatar

I bought a few Rock & Republic eyeshadows recently and they ended up being not that great… I would have been very upset if I had bought them at regular price and not on sale.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Covergirl lately. I always thought of them as a crap brand, but their newer products are really nice. I LOVE their newest lipsticks. I’d pay 3X as much for them… they feel great on my lips, wear very well, and have a good selection of colors.

And I have to echo what others are saying about certain Wet N Wild products. Some of their products are just TERRIBLE, so it is surprising that they have some that are just INCREDIBLY great.

Karlie Tipton Avatar

Peter Thomas Roth SPF powder is TERRIBLE. It smells bad, it has way too much color, the applicator is useless and it costs $42! ELF makes one that is much better and only $6. Actually, I’ve been shocked at how great almost all the ELF products I’ve tried have been considering how ridiculously cheap they are.

anonymous Avatar

most (not all) high end brands disappoint me. unless an ingredient is rare or mfr is expensive or they are especially innovative you’re likely paying a fortune for something that costs a tiny fraction to manufacture and a fortune to market.

disappointing brands: smashbox & benefit for the low quality ingredients. Dior for poor product design & color options. stila for general low quality. philosophy for a lot of potentially harmful chemicals. nuxe= uggh. fresh ancienne: horrible texture

surprising good: loreal mascaras, maybelline concealers, trim nail buffers, most buxom, thebalm shadows, korres, fresh umbrian & primers, ole henriksen, caudalie (outside range of what I’ll pay but definitely worth the cost–very gentle and effective–I would definitely recommend them to anyone with super sensitive skin), lorac silicone free hydrating sensitive skin primer, revlon lipstick in berry rich– a standout shade that’s Bobbi Brown but better. ecotools, fantastic for the price, the travel eye set is super convenient (and exactly fits the brush from be try.believe.love for a full face set that fits in the purse for a complete set of functional brushes), MUFE HD blush–amazed me. 1st MUFE purchase but def will be buying lots more of their stuff. worth the price.

weak spot– out of my budget but I can’t help loving the look: chantecale (sp?) I’d love to try something from them someday just to see if the products were as good to use as to look at

Ani_BEE Avatar

All the Time!

One that comes to mind is Prestige Waterproof Eyeliner and Total Intensity™ Eyeliner Long Lasting Intense Color run circles around some of the Urban Deacy 24/7 liner for consistent colour payoff and durability.

Also I’m not a fan of alot of high en brands sinmple because the colour payoff and longevity pals in comparison to reputable theatrical and photography brands.

positive:
wet n wild e/s trios. I got two of them so far and they are sooo smooth, pigmented, blendable. I’m amazed.
W7 Sun Light Glow – benefit high beam dupe, it’s so great & longlasting.
ebay 15 Concealer palette – best cream concealer I’ve ever used. Awesome colors, longlasting, great consistency, costs almost nothing. Amazed.

negative: MAC Arctic Grey e/s. Luckily limited edition, but wth is this, super sheer, glittery, grey shade that looks like crumbly dust on the lids. EW!
Nars Misfit e/s duo. Turquoise color is nice, but that super sheer, dusty looking light yellow, these colors don’t work together at all imo and one is plainly ugly on me. So expensive, but bad.
Nars Cream e/s. Crease like nothing else & make other eyeshadows fade withtin five minutes. Again, so expensive but just _horrible_!

LorraineER Avatar

When I first started seeing good reviews on the Wet N Wild Color Icon palettes I was surprised. I didn’t believe them at first either, until I picked one up myself! I’m often suprised to see good reviews for brands like Jane and N.Y.C sometimes but I’ve learned myself about hidden gems..there’s a ruby red gloss from N.Y.C that I tried on a whim and love!

Z Avatar

YES! I love the Suave Naturals Body wash and L’oreal Telescopic mascara. The body wash is a HUGE steal at, like, 1.19 or such. The mascara is awesome too.

Carmen Avatar

Disappointment: Macs Carbon eyeshadow, I understand a lot of matte eye shadows aren’t that pigmented/intense but Carbon is so sheer and hard to work with, As are a lot of Macs black eye shadows.

Benefits cream eye shadows, horrible! Some are very sheer and have a weird texture that I don’t like && made my eyeshadow crease like crazy! They definitely don’t compare to Mac paint pots.

I was surprised at how great Elf’s & sonia kashuks brushes are! They lasted me a long time and held up pretty well until I could get some Mac brushes.

bxboricua Avatar

Surprised in a good way- Wet n Wild Lust Palette

Surprised in a bad way – Benefit “Creaseless” Cream Shadows crease on me soooo badly! also Stila “waterproof” smudge stick is definately not waterproof on me. Its too bad because both products come in so many beautiful colors 🙁

Joy Avatar

The more I use “low end” products (Wet & Wild, Jordana, NYC, Pond’s, etc.) the more I realize that I’ve been a chump spending $22 for an eye pencil or shadow.) I knew I was paying for fancy packaging and national advertising. I have enough high-end stuff in my stash to last a lifetime, but there’s very little, if any, I’d repurchase. (And certainly not in-store. I want nothing to do with snooty SA’s or upsells.)

anonymous Avatar

oh– ponds! I’ve tried a TON of different makeup remover sheets because I can be lazy at night sometimes and doesn’t matter if I pay $15 or more, none of them seem to get off all the makeup with no feeling of “must wash face immediately” like the pond’s clean sweep original I keep thinking the $$$ will do something better but if I have heavy makeup I reach for pond’s because I know I’ll have to use two of the expensive ones or just still not feel clean.

Julia Minamata Avatar

Chanel’s Precision Blemish Control. $30 CAD and not effective. Just about anything is better, for a fraction of the price! I like Mario Badescu’s Silver Powder. Lasts forever and great for calming down redness. Their healing cream is also nice.

Hannah Avatar

I was surpised how amazing Revlon Colorburst lipsticks and Super Lustrous glosses are – especially that they have interesting colors in both lines (because I never thought of Revlon as a “cool” makeup brand but these new releases changed my opinion of Revlon, now it’s accessible quality that is also on-trend!) AND I usually hate drugstore make up!

Garima Avatar

surprised in bad way – Illamasqua 4 color liquid meta palette. It looked so pretty in pan but creased in 5 minutes. caviar dreams quad from MAC was shocker too as I have read so many bad reviews but I bought it anyways & it turned out to look so good on me.. as many people have asked me about what am I wearing on my eyes?? I use them wet & they stay whole day without fading..

Cristina Avatar

Does anyone have complains for MAC s Feline eye Kohl ? Cause Yesterday I used and in My inner corners run all! was so awful I cant believe it!

boo Avatar

YES. Mine started migrating under my eyes within two hours, and I was sitting around eating dinner with friends — I wasn’t sweating or anything. I just got my UD 15th Anniversary kit, which has Perversion in it (it looks to be as dark as Feline). I’m hopeful since the 24/7 liners last on me longer than anything else I’ve tried. Feline, despite the adorable name, was SUCH a disappointment!

allison1998 Avatar

Wet n Wild…I am very suprised at how good this brand has become over the past couple of years. I am highly impressed with their Color Icon 6-shade palettes. Smooth and highly pigmented not chalky at all. A little goes a long way. I also like the WnW liquid and cream liners. Very good and at a fraction of the cost.

I also like the Prestige liquid liner pen.

Whippetlady Avatar

I am very pleased with an old Milani lipstick that’s been hanging around in my basket of tricks for a while now. #11 Rose Blush is a fab product! Creamy, great color, never dries, and it was maybe $5?
I hated my Nars Cream eyeshadow. What a joke- creased, smeared. And Physician’s Formula Gel Eyeliner- 3 little stackables for $11 is a steal, and they are every bit as good as Bobbi’s.

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

I LOVE L’Oreal HIP Color Chrome eyeliners! I think they’re just as good as 24/7s (omg did i really just say that?)
I honestly am not impressed by MAC. I think a lot of their sales are just due to the hype of their collections.

anonymous Avatar

L’oreal’s liquid pencil eyeliner might only come in 3 colors but it glides on incredibly smooth with no jumps or unevenness and it wears longer than 24/7.

emily Avatar

Revlon colorburst lipstick in nude (cant remember the real name lol) was awesome and comparable to a mac creamsheen lipstick but for like 1/3 of the price. And Sonia Kashuk brushes! Her flatop multipurpose brush is awesome, it hasn’t shed a single hair in the 10 months that Ive been using it. Her white-handled eye brushes and blush brush rock too. I use her blush brush to contour and it picks up/deposits color so nicely so that it’s not just a huge patch of brown powder or something. It blends it nicely.

Jazz Avatar

Nars completely surprised me. I bought one eyeshadow for my birthday last year and its so unpigmented. And I tried the lipgloss and it was super sticky – not a fan

Miss K Avatar

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some drugstore brands. I love Wet n Wild eyeliners and lipliners and Cover Girl Lash Blast mascara generally gets the job done well. I prefer inexpensive mascara because the stuff dries out so quickly. A good blush can last for ages, but I don’t want to have to keep replacing a Chanel mascara every six months.

MARGO Avatar

mac’s pro long concealor-nw20- that came out this year was the greatest match for me but under my mature eyes it felt like the suction of a vacuum cleaner. it was SO drying. terrible.

Amanda E Avatar

I was definitely suprised at how BAD Benefit’s Boo Boo Zap was. It’s pretty much cloudy water that’s $60/oz. Pass.

I am usually suprised (in a good way) at Loreal and Revlon products.

Niki Avatar

I have been positively shocked at the quality of Drugstore lipsticks in past few years because Revlon, L’Oreal, CoverGirl and Maybelline have all raised their games and I love having an economical alternative to my esteemed Chanel and Estee Lauder lipstick addiction.

Jessica Avatar

I was so disappointed with the MAC Mega Metal eyeshadows. I got Odalisque, Noir Plum, and Unflappable. I thought they were going to be smooth and pigmented but they are suprisingly sheer and kinda grainy, especially for $19.50 a pop. I like the colors though. MAC’s regular eyeshadows, like the veluxe pearls, starflash, and frosts, are way better.

Dani Diamond Avatar

To be honest mine was afew mac eyeshadows i know afew people are sayin that here but most you come across are brilliant we all no how great they are but some are not as pigmented, cant blend to save ur life, or the colour is complety different in the pan than on the eye even with primer on! so yeah.. its with me when i get ones from the monthly collections some are like sheer in most of them of the year so theyre abit of a waste wen u can get the sameish colour from the drugstores much cheaper such as NYX & Urban Decay etc…

xx

I was super disappointed in the Guerlain Meteorites! That was the first product Id tried of theirs. I was so excited about getting them, and couldn’t wait to use them. And then I did. I couldn’t see a darn thing on my skin. It just seemed like nothing was there to me. For the price of the product I was really unhappy.

boo Avatar

Oh, absolutely! I think Bare Minerals is one of the most over-hyped brands ever to exist. I was very disappointed when I tried it.

Also, a lot of the MAC products I’ve tried are really so-so. So many people absolutely love the line, and there are some absolute gems (some of the shadows and lipsticks, and I love the Peacocky fluidline in Siahi), but I have been really disappointed with some of my purchases. My most recent disappointment was Feline. After hearing so many rave reviews, I bought it. That night, I decided to try it out before getting dinner with some friends. Within two hours, it had already started to migrate under my eyes. I couldn’t believe it! It had the worst wear time of any eyeliner I’ve ever used. If I could return it, I would! While I really love some of my MAC purchases (Woodwinked, Siahi, Lady Bug, etc.), I’ve learned that the line is overrated. At this point, I take anyone’s recommendation of a MAC product in a formulation I’ve never tried with a grain of salt.

bee Avatar

I was shocked at how much Guerlain’s Écrin 6 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Champs-Élysées lacked pigmentation… The texture was also chalky and a pain in the arse to blend! For nearly $100 CAD I expected WAAAY more… I lack faith in Guerlain now..

On a side note, Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipsticks and glosses are AMAZING! Definitely pick one up, the lipsticks are so creamy

Liz Avatar

Yes – NARS Kuala Lumpur. I usually LOVE Nars eyeshadows, and this looks stunning in the pan. It was the biggest disappointment because I couldn’t get the colours to show up on me, or the brush for that matter.

Emily Avatar

I was truly horrified by the poor quality of NARS Wicked duo. To me something with this name should have a decent color payoff, and instead it had no heart. It is only Wicked in that it completely failed to perform.

anonymous Avatar

definitely! I used to LOVE a silly little cheap spray foundation by sally hansen to DEATH years & years before anyone was talking airbrush. it was the bomb– looked better on me than the Dior 🙁 (it was reformulated and now sucks)

I still like loreal voluminous and visible lift powder even after trying a ton of pricier ones (have found better but also lots not nearly as good–it also has a nice flocked applicator which might be part of the success)

bad: bene creaseless aren’t creaseless on me at ALL
Korres makeup knocks my socks off
thebalm is THE BOMB
BUXOM! how did I live so long without them?
shadow primers, the whole concept– don’t know how I lived so long without them, total necessity for shadow
some kinda gorgeous: LOOK like you have makeup on but get no coverage…bass ackwards…!
tokidoki lipstain in pepperoncino looked totally teenybopper at first but it’s the only lipstain I’ve actually liked & NOT looked like a 13 yo w koolaid lips!
UD loose pigments: MESS!
UD shadows: yay!

MUFE HD blush: best thing that I’ve ever put on my cheeks! HG
caudalie eye cream: way way way too much money & worth it– doesn’t burn my eyes like everything else does, it makes all the irritation go away & my upper & lower lids loose the AM puffiness yay!

but best of all? Temptalia! I <3 my bloggers, they've totally reworked how I think of makeup & made it a thousand times better experience all around. soooo appreciate them!
