Nope, I find it absolutely silly to have makeup that just sits there. And tbh none of that makeup people buy that’s limited edition is worth anything. Yeah maybe in the immediate sense something will go for maybe $100 on Ebay but that’s it. Not really worth it to hold onto your limited edition imo. If I buy it I’m using it! Life is short so I rather enjoy:)
Great perspective!
Ditto
Yes. Mostly because they are LE, partly because I don’t like sullying beautiful products. ?
No, not the way I once was. Although something difficult to dupe may cause me to be *slightly* more cautious, I just tell myself that at my age (58 next month) and with the size of my stash, I likely won’t run out of too terribly much before I croak! LoL!
Hahahahaha…I’m a few years older than you, Nancy, and I feel the same way – at my age and with everything I have, I’m pretty much set for life (though I can see myself maybe finishing at least 2 of the 4 shadows in Empreinte du desert before my time comes; in my faith, the coffin is never open, there is no embalming etc. otherwise, I’d probably stipulate that someone lay me out wearing THAT eyeshadow quad!)
The only time that it bothers me to use LE products is if they have a beautiful embossing or overspray but it only stops me for awhile. Eventually, I start using it though. If I were rich I would probably buy a second product so that I could keep the product pristine. I doubt I will ever hit pan on most of my LE makeup, LOL.
Yes about the embossing or overspray – I had a hard time using the MAC Nutcracker face compacts because the texture stamping was so pretty.
Sadly, yes!! I am in love with the KVD Metal Matte palette, but I avoid using it because I will be so sad if I hit pan on any of the colors. Most mornings, I ask myself, “Is this a Metal Matte worthy day?” Usually, it is a no. I love it so much, but I don’t want to “waste” any product on a normal work day. And then I feel guilty about that. Okay, I know it sounds crazy. Umm, you just convinced me; I will try to buy another on Ebay (hopefully). I DID use it tonight, for my daughter’s talent show at her school (on me, not her, LOL). And I’m glad I did!
LOL – a Metal Matte worthy day! I’ve do the same, actually, just didn’t realize I did until I read your comment. It’s not crazy, it’s just our ‘process’!
lol “metal matte worthy day”
I totally do this too!
But I try to tell myself every day is worth it! Life goes by fast.
Lol, I’ve purchased most of Pat McGrath’s LE products, and they are just sitting, as I didn’t want to “waste” them. What am I waiting for? I will bring them out and use them this week.
Good for you!
I have had an unopened tube of KVD lolita for more than a year and never use it because it’s the perfect color on me and it’s too “special” to wear on a daily basis (or something illogical like that). So what I end up using are dupes most of the time (like one from NYX) even though I have the “real” thing! Absolutely bananas. I actually broke it out the other day and actually wore it and enjoyed! Going to try to do this more, because otherwise, it’s like you don’t even have it.
No. I have hit pan on a few LE eyeshadows, but other than that I barelly finish anything other than base products.
Me neither, mainly because most everything has at least one or two dupes nowadays!
I’d be happy to finish at least something other than foundation and mascara!
Not at all. I buy makeup to use it. I might keep decorative compacts or packaging if I can find a use for them once emptied …assuming I hit pan. Ha!
Nope. I buy them to use them. Although I usually don’t travel with them, just in case.
Nope! I wanted it enough to spend the money on it and if I spend money on something I’m using it
I used to feel a bit regretful but when I finally realized that just about the only thing I ever finish is lipstick, I stopped worrying and just use and enjoy my “stuff” because, really, it IS just makeup and not anything truly collectible, like art.
Yes . Aside from the artificial shortage games that are an LE turn off for me — I tend to use favorites reliably over a longer time, so I’ll go through a few of them.. It’s not fun for me to spend time and money to replace a favorite. I thought LEs were ok for seasonal situations like holidays, but I’m still using the seasonal fig/rose gold Bite duo, will be bummed when it runs out.
Aha — I misread the question. I don’t hesitate to use LE item if I’ve bought it already. I hesitate to buy them in the first place.
I used to hesitate a little bit, then I realized that if I’m not using them- then it was a waste of money! I might as well enjoy them as much as I can while they are at “peak freshness” anyway.
I used to save them for special occasions, but life is too short to wait for those so I wear them every chance I get. My original release of Lavender Whip will likely go off before it runs out so wear the heck out of it in the summer.
Not at all. By the time I finish a product it’s likely that my tastes are going to have changed. If it’s the color I’ve been looking for, I’m going to buy it, whether it’s limited edition or not.
It depends on what it is. If it’s something like lipstick and I know I’ll go through it quickly, I’ll just buy a backup. I bought two backups of Urban Decay Nocturnal lipstick, for instance, because I’ve been wearing it every day. I’d say the only time I’m hesitant of using a limited edition product is when I know I will use it up and it can’t be replaced. Urban Decay 24/7 eyeshadow in Juju is my absolute favorite, but I have yet to find a suitable dupe, so I’ve been reluctant to use it as much as I’d like.
Lisa, is it the eyeshadow pencil? If so, use it to your heart’s content because those things do dry and harden and become unusable over time. I have 3 of the original ones and only one of them is even remotely usable now.
I’m getting better about it. I used to hoard LE products (not just make-up, but niche bath/body products as well). I ended up just tossing a bunch that went off and that has really helped open my eyes about needing to use the products I buy. The whole point is to enjoy them. I think I still feel a pang of guilt, but for the most part I’m finally starting to learn that almost nothing is SO unique that I can’t find something comparable in the future (if I even use it up).
I will say that I am a bit more hesitant to buy LE products though, just because I know I can get into a mentality of hoarding it rather than using it. I try to limit myself to general catalog/permanent items as much as possible.
Nope! I believe in the thought that, I spent good money on this item, I’m going to use it, And love it!
I feel guilty when I DON’T use products!
Shannon, I like how you think!
Thank you SO much Mariella!!! 😀
Yes, but that’s because I usually only by LE stuff that’s super high end and without back up. It also usually needs to fill a unique spot in my collection as well.
No, not at all. I have far too much makeup to every worry about something running out (unless it’s a complexion or skincare product, which I wouldn’t buy limited edition).
No way! I buy makeup to use, not worship.
Absolutely not, I buy them so I can enjoy them and you bet I do ?
Definitely! I hesitate to even use my “nice” makeup!
Trying to work on changing that, as stuff does expire. (And taste changes!)
But it’s the same mentality for not wearing “nice” clothes on an everyday basis. Probably not healthy but hard to kick.
If it’s a powder that has a beautiful pattern on the surface and using it will destroy that, then yeah I hesitate, but I use it anyway. For anything else, definitely not. My concern is more about finishing up products before they expire, especially for gloss/lipstick!
No. I use what I have and enjoy it! 🙂
I actually use my LE items more often on average. Probably because I usually don’t bother playing that game, so if I do take the time to navigate the LE jungle it’s because I really want the product.
I don’t prefer to buy them because if I love it I won’t be able to buy again!!
Not at all. I try them because they may be my newest HG and I can stock up.
Yes, especially When it has a special design which is often on powders or blushes etc.
Yes – for a few years I refused to buy LE products because I fell in love with a lipstick that was ‘me’ and learned too late it was LE. Now, if I truly love a limited product, I will buy a few back ups.
No, sometimes I will purchase two but I am like that with a lot of things that I really like not just limited edition. I always feel I have to get two. If I don’t purchase two and it is so pretty to look at I will wait for a special occasion to use it which sounds silly being I have so much makeup that I have not used yet but everyone has different quirks.
Not at all except I’ve found myself in the unique predicament of having “lost” a box with precious brand new LE products I carefully packed and put away safely while my house was being repainted become valuable by the time my absent minded self found them! I have the first Lorac mega pro palette, the mac Cinderella 6 pan eyeshadow palette still pristine in it’s box and a mac Cinderella beauty powder also pristine in it’s box. I can’t bring myself to use any of them even though I bought them with the intent to use. Now though they’ve all become worth so much more than I paid especially that first Lorac Mega Pro that I can’t bring myself to disturb their perfect condition by using them. But I have soul so I don’t want to rip someone off on evil bay because rare or not those prices are nuts. If I try to sell them cheaper will people think they must be fakes? And where could I sell them besides ebay that isn’t one of those crappy left overs from a garage sale app? These are the questions that keep me paralyzed from actually getting use from the products before they get too old and I’ve lost out all the way around!
I have no problem using, and using up, limited edition items. I usually avoid buying them in the first place because I don’t enjoy the anxiety created by the false scarcity that the cosmetics companies use to create runs on their products.
On the other hand when I discover that a favorite has been discontinued and I cannot locate any backups I tend to use the item a bit slower until I have found a suitable dupe. Then if it is a cream product or something that will expire I’ll go ahead and finish it up, if it is a powder product I tend to hoard the unused discontinued item and move on to the dupe for usual day to day wear.
No – I get right into them because I am so looking forward to using the product – it is usually eye shadows. I don’t really buy any other limited edition product.
Yes; I can’t bring myself to use the miniature perfumes that often come in Christmas LE sets. I collect them, and I want them to remain unused. I’ve been collecting them over 25 years, and I have quite a collection. Some of the fragrances have been discontinued.
Nope, don’t save ANYTHING. I have so much in my stash that switch back and forth. And we all know that Limited Editions always come out every few months. So off to the next one. Life is too short to save and hold on forever to things we love and use every day. I LOVE make up, so I am always shopping and trying new makeup.
No, I buy makeup to use and love it. Plus I have so much there’s no need to not wear it all and enjoy. ?
Not as a rule, no. I did not pay for them to just lay there and wait for the expiration date to approach 🙂 There are only two exceptions.
The first is MAC Jolly Good Duo way back from the Osbourne’s collection. This one I keep simply for a sentimental reason – this was THE ONLY collection I was properly stalking my local MAC for more than a month to get my hands on 🙂
The second one is MAC (again) Pressed and Ready lipstick from the Fashion Pack collection. There is something in this shade and finish that I find soo flattering on my pale skin that I want it to be there when I need it and don’t want to run out of it. Go figure. Obviously, having 30 more lip products makes it easy.
No hesitation whatsoever!!! I have finally come to the realization that limited editions are not all they have cracked up to be, and that there will always be a new season to get. Really excited about spring releases.
I hesitated using my first LE lipstick (Mac mystical from the alluring aquatics) because I felt it was the perfect mlbb for me, plus I love the packaging that being it constantly in my purse the water beads would come off. After a year of using it only on special occasions I realized that I’m not getting my money’s worth and lipsticks can go stale. I went to Mac and swatched a few that can actually be the same – and there it is, Mac fast play.
I do I try very hard to avoid them I may fall in love with something and then it’ll never be available again!
Me neither. Have fallen for so much of the highliter hype got so many to last through several Queens lifetimes! Lol! But I live them!
