I love it!! I have very specific needs when it comes to eye shadow as I’v said here before. So I love to build my own pallets.
They REALLY come in handy when travelling, I know i’v taken a urban decay pallet before, and I didn’t use like half the shades! But when I take my Z pallet with my few every day essentials. I use every one of them!!
Yes and no…I like the idea of it, but it tends to be quite expensive vs premade palettes, and I find that I always gravitate toward the same type of shades. Given the freedom to choose whatever I want, I mostly end up with a bunch of light to mid-ton shades of shimmery gold/bronze! Pre-made palettes that include colors I wouldn’t normally choose on my own encourage me to broaden my horizons, at least to an extent.
I feel the same way. At least Inglot makes it affordable but they just down get any limelight from the youtube community like they did 5 years ago.
That said a pre-made palette with permanent shades will ALWAYS catch my eye.
I do. I’ve slowing been amassing MUFE Artist Shadow singles. Yes, they seem expensive, but I know I’ll love and use each colour. I currently use two large MUFE metal palettes, divided into mattes and shimmers. I also have a number of empty duo and trio palettes standing by, in case I change my mind and want to reorganize them!
I do like it, but I don’t do it often because I tend to pick variations of the same color making the palette kind of hard to work with by itself. I guess it’s my minimalist nature.

I’ve just started doing this, and I love it. I can be at my own mercy — not the brand’s — for what goes together, what to use to experiment with core shades, and how to arrange. Also, I appreciate how for some brands, the cases are smaller than most pre-assembled ones, meaning easier for travel.
Never even consider it in the past – and anything that involves depotting is still a no go. But the Surratt concept actually appealed to me (one of the few people it did, apparently). I like the ease of the Surratt system where you just buy the palette and all the shadows and blushes fit in perfectly. Not interested in anything complicated or a ‘project’ but if it’s straightforward, I’m game.
Yes, I do! Very much so in fact. Probably how I came to be the bemused owner of 11 or 12 quads of MAC Pro Pan singles plus a Buxom 6-pan I put together last summer, with a 2nd one planned out. There’s just something fun and special about customizing your shades and finishes to your own unique taste, I have found. ?
Not particularly.
I’m neither yay nor nay on it. If I come across singles that I want to put in a palette then sure, if not, no biggie. I usually like having fun with the palettes I buy; using colors I’d never thought to use before.
I loved picking up my mufe singles but I find it very tricky to organise! I need to reorganise my custom palette so that I use it more… And better!
Funny enough I have no issues picking colours here and there when I take my viseart palettes out. ..
Focusing on my custom palette might be the solution in the end!
Yes indeed. With MAC, it means I’m not ending up with FIVE pans of Carbon and with other brands too, it means I get what I like and what suits me. If the company gives a price advantage, I am even happier (Buxom is a perfect example – buy 6 eyeshadows and the price drops AND you get a free palette to hold ’em).
No, but I always complain about shades I won’t use in almost every shadow palette I have, so maybe I should give it another try. I like that companies like BE have made it easy to build palettes with shades you’ll use.
100% yes. Prefer it in every way. I don’t need any more nude transition shades or black shades or brow highlights. I wish I could just pick my own shades always.
Yes; I don’t need to experiment with color anymore. Been there and done that — as the saying goes.

Absolutely! Saves time searching for the right combination among so many options. Easy to travel with premade palette. Eliminates wasting time choosing what to wear on vacation. There can be too many choice options!

Not really. Considering what a huge eyeshadow junkie I am, you would think I’d enjoy it more. I often get overwhelmed and can’t decide what to put in the palette. I want all the colors! Other times, I try too hard to make it perfect and it sucks all the joy out of it. I also kind of like being surprised by premade palettes. There are a lot of similar palettes on the market, but every once in a while there is something like KVD MetalMatte that has a shade selection I would not have thought to put together myself.
In the past I really liked making a few custom quads back when CoverGirl and e.l.f. had their magnetic systems.
No I don’t actually. Simply because I rarely buy singles – I have lots of quads, quints, a few duos, 8 pans and a couple of large palettes. I think I only have 3 singles – all greens/olives.
No. I prefer pre-made because most of the time, it’s a clue as to how it’s to be used (rows or columns go together). I’m getting better at picking out my eyeshadow groupings but I prefer it pre-made for me. I have depotted all of my singles and in a recent attempt to make my own palettes, I failed miserably. I ended up organizing by color and then finish. This is pleasing to the eye for me but I don’t use those colors as much because of it. I’ve been thinking about calling the MUA I work with from time to time to come over and help me organize them in usable rows or columns.
I do like ready made palettes but don’t stike to just one palette when doing a look. I have just begun using z palettes but don’t tend to arrange mine by color yet. I get frustrated with individual eyeshadows because iitam never able to locate the color I want or forget about a great color. In a palate, I look at them often enough that I recall my colors and their locations. This occurs whether iImaker it myself or by it premade.
Yes, yes, yes! I am not a fan o premade palettes, but I love building my own.

Absolutely. I prefer it! I’m over purchasing palettes where I can’t use half of them. It’s a waste of money.

I also like to imagine a palette that I can fill with my favorite shadows from different brands palettes and singles. Of course they would need to work together formula-wise but if I could make a 10 or 12 pan palette with ABH Pink Champagne, the Marc Jacobs cream shade from the Lolita palette, Naked 2 from UD Naked Basics etc., well that would be perfection!
Yes, I prefer it now. When I was figuring out what looked good on me and my personal style, I found pre-made palettes to be the most helpful and economical. But now that I have started depotting everything into a z-palette, I just want cheaper options for single shades. I have found the browbone and skintone shades that work best for me. I don’t want to keep buying more in a palette.
