I think patience and practice. Half-lashes can sometimes be easier, because they are more forgiving in regards to precision. Always make sure to trim lashes to fit your lash line as well as bend them so they will curve properly around the lash line.

Really let the glue get tacky. That way the lashes don’t slide around once you place them.
I like to put them on initially with my fingers to get it close to my lashline. Then, to tuck them into the inner and outer corner of my eyes, I like to use tweezers so I get a better grip. 🙂
I always look down into a mirror so it’s easier to see and I always apply my lashes with tweezers.
Yes, using a mirror to look down has been on of the most helpful tips that I’ve learned.
My advice is: Do not attempt. All you’ll do is mutter and curse for half an hour while the lashes stick to everything but your eyes.
Now for useful advice. Buy lashes at MAC and have them put them on right then and there.
LOL, this made me giggle. You are so right!! I got it right for Halloween but I lucked out. I swear it was the 1st time. Usually I give up…and yes, I have gone to a MAC counter and have them put the lashes on for me. 🙂
I’m in agreement here because I just cannot get them to work for me. However, I am looking forward to the advice ppl will add here. I’ll definitely try looking down into a mirror.

Thanks for the laugh. LOLOL
I need a good laugh sometimes. LOL
How much does MAC charge to put them on?
lol!!! So true…All I do is curse and ruin my make-up and then I am in Foul mood….:)
I think it’s better to apply them before you put any eye makeup on, the clean skin provides a better surface for the adhesive to stick to
what’s your favorite lash glue, Christine, and where do you get it? the end of the lashes always comes loose and looks ridiculous on me. I can NOT get them to stick. I gave up. but, I was using the lash glue that came with the Ardell lashes, maybe it is bad?
Use Duo’s lash glue! the glue that comes with the ardell lashes are crap!
I think different techniques work differently for everyone, but it’s most important to flex the lash strip, make sure it has the same curve as your eye. I know they come pre curved in the box, but everyone’s eye shape varies. I hate seeing people wearing falsies that give them a lazy-eye look ( not enough curvation.) Or people with almond shaped eye, longer looking eyes and wear falsies that have an abnormal curve; their eyes just look crazily alien-ish.
trim lashes to fit.
hold falsies(in the middle) with your tweezers and apply glue.
wait for glue to become tacky.
place on eyelash with your tweezer by placing it in the middle of your lashline, quickly place down the ends of the eyelash to secure the ends or else your eyelashes will lift. adjust the placement of the eyelash before glue dries.
keep adjusting with tweezer or just your fingers until its pretty dry.c
careful with the tweezers to not poke yourself.
thats how i do mine, its easy for me, hope this helped 🙂
Very helpful, thanks Karen!
hardest part for me was always messing with the glue. best trick i ever learned was from richie nickel on youtube: place a dot of glue on your hand right before you put it on the lash, that way you can touch the glue on your hand to test how tacky it is and when it’s ready. once the glue on your hand is ready, you can apply the lash! it’s one of those amazing “why the hell didn’t i think of that?!” kind of tips!
I’m definitely going to try this tip. I never know when the glue is tacky and being impatience doesn’t help.
Although I’m still learning, one trick I learned from youtube is apply a little extra glue on the ends.
I’m currently all about false lashes and I think the key to it, as Christine said, is to practice. Buy cheap lashes and just practice putting them on.
One thing that I realised while practicing was to really let the glue dry. You will get the hang of it quickly. The tackier the glue is, the better you will be able to place them. It’s really not hard!
For practising I just ordered this huge bulk of lashes off eBay from Hong Kong. 60 pairs for around 7€. I know, the quality might not be the best, but they will be good to practice as I can just cut them up and wreck them and won’t waste my money (as opposed to practising with MAC lashes).
Let the glue get tacky – at least 30 seconds. Do a dry fit and trim the lashes if necessary (I agree half lashes are the way to start out). Use tweezers for application. I curl my own lashes and apply light mascara before applying lashes. Some folks like to apply mascara after lash application but I don’t like having mascara on my falsies. Remove carefully at the end of the night and put them back in their container – You can wear them again, even the cheap kind!
I usually pause between glue application; First, I glue the middle of the lashes, wait for about 10-15 seconds, then the outer part and wait for about 10 seconds and last, I glue the inner part, and then I wait about 20 seconds before I start applying them. Why do I do this? I think it´s easier applying in the middle first, and because the glue has set it will stuck immediately, and giving me more time to attach them the the outer and then the inner part of the eye.
That sounds really awesome. Gonna have to try that next time!
Bend and twist the falsies every which way before attaching it to the base of your eyelashes, it will make the falsies softer and easier to adjust. Make sure the glue is tacky before attaching and make sure that the mirror is below you so can look down on it, and it would be easier for you to “see” where you’re putting your falsies.
I just can’t do it on my own. Takes too much time (at least 2 hours and still epic fail and wasted half of the glue). Close eyes and let friend fix the false lashes fot you.
Line them up with the inner corners!! Years ago when I first started wearing lashes I couldn’t figure out why I always looked a little cross-eyed. I was starting from the outside and working in. Baf idea! I also echo the letting the glue get tacky. I heard somewhere that RuPaul says to cut them into fours and apply the pieces individually. Sounds genius to me!
When I take the lash out of the package, sometimes I like to bend and wriggle them a little to make them more pliable. I use Duo or LashGrip and I wait until the glue looks a certain way to confirm that it’s tacky. Usually, this is when the glue is still a solid white but matte (it’s glossy when you first squeeze it out of the tube onto the lash). Then I look down into a mirror and apply. First I place it down by the center, then I adjust both ends to line up with the lash line. I tend to use tweezers, too.
Duo glue from mac or sally or xmas tree shop
here are some things i do:
– let the glue sit open and uncapped overnight so when you use it, it is already tacky (no waiting)
– use a mirror underneath and look down to place on lashes
– cut the outter edges of lashes when trimming to fit the eye
– bend the lashes before applying
– place lash in the middle of eye and use tweezers to press down the edges
– for lashes that have clear binding or base bottom, put them on your hand and apply black gel liner so you dont have to go over with a black liquid liner later
I guess I’m the minority here–I’ve worn false lashes MAYBE 4 times and have never had an issue with application. I usually put glue on the lashes and then while I’m waiting for the glue to be tacky, I do 1 coat of mascara on each eye. Then, I place the lashes and hold them in three spots (being careful not to touch any glue) for 30 seconds or until they feel secure. You could also use tweezers or a clean orange stick (from your manicure kit!) if you have bigger fingers.
I will recommend putting on a thin line of black liquid liner, too. If you don’t place your lashes perfectly, this helps blend them in so it looks like you did it right!
Let the glue dry for at least 30 seconds, until it’s tacky before you apply. This really helps. MAC taught me that, and it’s helped me tremendously.
I have no tips because I’m still learning how not to glue my eyes together I’m a mess with false eye lashes when I need to have them done I go to the salon
I usually mutter & curse putting them on. I’m noticing though lately that the Duo glue causes some irritation, anyone know of another type of lash glue that’s less irritating?
Put on gel liner before, and thick enough to conceal any gaps. Also, let the glue get tacky and then slap them on. The more I think about the right position the more I mess it up
I always put the glue on a container so that it can get tacky first, then I have less time to mess up when I apply them. It also, helps make the lash set faster.
Everyone has the right idea with letting the glue get tacky…. it really makes a world of difference! Some other tips I have learned as a MAC artist
Do not close the eye you are applying the lash to. Look down into a mirror so you don’t glue your lower lashes in there as well!
Place the centre of the lash down first so that it is easier to adjust
As soon as the lash is where you want it, stretch the eyelid out so that you dont get any “ripples” in the lash band – so not pretty!
Pinch your natural lashes together with the false ones, this will bring them as close as possible and close any gaps!
Dont attempt it yourself the first time hahahaha…. MAC does free lash demos when you buy a new set. Get someone to show you and pay attention so you can replicate! 🙂
tweezers tweezers tweezers! i also prefer lashes with the invisible band. looks more natural and you can get a tighter fit.
Well the first step is to find quality lashes, depending on how they were made dictates how easily they go on. The ultra plasticy “costume” lashes are impossible to put on. Ones that are from a beauty supply store or cosmetic store are generally pretty good.
The application is fairly easy after that, I pick them up using an eyelash grabber. It came with a starter kit years ago, its like a giant pair of plastic tweezers. Then I apply a thin line of glue and wave it around to get it to dry. Then place that right on my lashline and press it down in the middle. Then use the back of a makeup brush or my finger to push the rest onto my lashline.
Voila!
I put a little drop of glue on the back of my hand and drag the strip of the lashes through it. Then wait a few seconds before applying. Push them as close to the base of your lashes as you can get (use a tweezers or q-tip). Add a layer of mascara to blend them with your real lashes and ta da!
My life became a lot easier when I started using the eyelash helper. Just google “eyelash helper”. It’s a Japanese product, I believe. Basically it keeps the lash curved while you place it on, helps me avoid the “wtf why are your lash bands not curved?” look. Once I have the lashes placed near my lash line, I adjust the with my fingers. In the end though, I still think lashes are something that could take anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours to do depending on the day, haha.
Thanks everyone for the tips! I have a pair of MUFE eyelashes, and all your tips make me want to *finally* use it. 🙂
use duo glue in black. If you used the “clear” version, once it dries, it’s still somewhat visible, and you’d have to use so much afford to cover it up with a black liner. (even if you had eyeliner on the lash line prior to applying the fake lashes, the “clear” glue kinda takes it away)
With the black glue, once it dries, you don’t have to worry as much to conceal it, just simply add eyeliner to your preference.
I’ve always had problems with false lashes–even now. My issue is usually the inner corner. It won’t be right at the lash line and because I have a deeper inner corner, it’s always a pain to adjust. I did try a tip I learned from Vintageortacky is dot a bit of glue on my hand, wait until it’s a little tacky then use a tiny brush apply the glue to my lash line and apply the lashes after. First time I tried it, I completely nailed it! I was so excited…til the night of the event and I totally failed. The first time was a trial run. That always happens…I can handle the practice but when it’s the night of when I need to wear them, it never works! I’ve kinda given up.
I do know I don’t think the looking down into a mirror trick would work for me. I’m always getting glue on my lower lash line in my inner corner, which just adds to the frustration!
I first trim the lashes from the outer edge. I then use a Q-tip to apply a thin line of lash glue. I angle my mirror so it’s flat and look down into it. I use my fingers to place the lashes near my lashline, then pinch my fingers against my natural and false lashes to get the lashes right on the lash line and make them look like they’re together with my real lashes. Once I have the lashes in the right place, I gently close my eyes against my index finger to angle them upward.
i really like cutting my lashes into threes then applying them underneath my real lashes 🙂
