Yes. I wouldn’t wear cool-toned makeup w/ an outfit that has warm tones. You don’t want to match your makeup to your outfit in a tacky way, but I think it looks better if you wear complementary colors. Anything goes if you’re wearing black or white, though.

I don’t match makeup to my outfit, but since i am obsessed with earrings and have tons of them i will match my eye makeup to my earrings to make both of them pop

livnzoe Avatar

i don’t wear anything on my lips most of the time.. because i think it’s often too much if i wear colorful clothes.
..but when i wear grey, white or nude colors.. i dare to wear a rosy lipstick!

Rita Avatar

Often yes. Like today I have green eyes, t-shirt, and earrings (and nails – no intention) + an orchid purple top peaking under the t-shirt, and lavender lips.

Pam Avatar

i don’t try to *match* but i try do a look where it would compliment the outfit… i feel if you try your hardest to match (eg. bright green eyeshadow with bright green shirt) it would look kind of tacky.. but that’s my opinion… some people can pull it off but i’d feel weird! 😛

I moreso match my makeup to the occasion: school, dinner, get together, etc. Occasionally I’ll wear a shirt/dress with color and match a part of my makeup to the outfit. I think this works for not subtle colors like blue because when people see something matching, they see the flow of colors.

Nicole Avatar

I don’t match my makeup and clothing, but I try to use complimentary colors so that nothing clashes. I tend to think most about which shade of blush would most compliment the color I am wearing that day.

Opheliana Avatar

Yes and no. I usually wear make up that I think fits good with the clothes, but not necessarily use the colours I have used in my outfit.

Katie Avatar

Ah, Christine, I do the same thing! I always do my makeup before getting dressed so I don’t mess up my clothes with foundation and powder. I also find that it’s easier to match my clothes to my makeup than it is vice versa.

Jayna Avatar

I generally match my makeup to my outfit, but sometimes if I want to try a paticular makeup look I will match the clothes. One certainly drives the other, it just depends on which is more important for the outing, the clothes or the makeup!

EMR Avatar

I’m like you Christine! makeup first, then outfit!
unless there’s something I’m wearing for a particular reason (dress for going to a wedding, costume party, etc) where I do the outfit first, then the makeup

Lovinlife4ever Avatar

Yes, I try to match my eyeshadow to my outfits most of the time. But if I don’t have a lot of time or if the colors are too dramatic for where i’m going, i’ll just do a neutral eye.

Amanda Avatar

I don’t really match. I usually do my make up first and just throw on whatever. If it looks terrible together or something I will change my outfit : )

Keener Avatar

I consider the colours sometimes if I decide to use a coloured eyeliner and play up a colour in my outfit. But generally I don’t know how to really match or compliment so I go neutral when in doubt. Sometimes if there’s a make up look I want to try I’d plan my outfit around it (but that’s rare).

dolce aria Avatar

Yep, even with more neutral styles. If do a winged liner, I pick a vintage dress, if I do a neutral style, I pick a casual-sexy dress, if I do bright, I match the color family with at least one of the overarching tones.

Usually the makeup comes before the outfit. Once in a blue moon, I’ll have a hankering to wear that 80’s suede dress with the crystal accents, and I’ll decide to do my makeup in similar style to match. Usually it’s vice versa though.

tremorviolet Avatar

I don’t really match but I try not to clash with my clothes. For instance, if I’m wearing a cool toned grey, I’d stay away from corals and oranges.

Gisele Avatar

I complement or coordinate my makeup to my outfit. And since I do my makeup first, there have been many times when I’ve changed my outfit based upon makeup that wouldn’t go with it.

Eileen Avatar

I had to laugh about your wardrobe change after doing your make-up. I’ve had the same experience on more than one occasion. I don’t do matchy-matchy, but I do like my colors to coordinate with what I’m wearing. I’m also influenced by the style of the clothes, the occasion, and the time of day.

Linnea Avatar

Haha. I have to say I like to not match the colors of my outfit but the “feel”. Like if I’m going preppy, i’ll wear preppy makeup(naturals, very clean). If I’m going a bit more on the wild side, my makeup will reflect that and I may be a little bit more colorful/smokey.

And ME TOO. Totally dressed. Did my makeup like I wanted, and have changed my outfit.

Edani Avatar

Absolutely! I try to match from head to toe, makeup and lip color complimenting outfit; I even try to match nail color and underwear with the whole get-up! That’s a consequence of being a Virgo! 😉

Leelee Avatar

In the past I was a fan of matching my eyeshadow to whatever color shirt/dress I had on..nothing too over the top..if it was a purple shirt I’d do a purple smokey eye..

Now I tend to pick what I’m going to wear for the day and then decide on my makeup, but sometimes I’ll get the urge to do something bold with my makeup. So I end up having to change my outfit in order for it to be more toned down.

Anitacska Avatar

Yes, totally! Although sometimes it’s not so much matching as complementing (like if I’m wearing a black top, I won’t be wearing black eyeshadow, but something neutral or something matching my accessories). Today it’s green top and green and gold eyeshadow, it looks pretty good actually! 😀

Hannah Avatar

i NEVER match my makeup to my outfit. that is just not my style i guess. as others have said, i do use “complementary” colors or styles of makeup to coordinate with my outfit, but i avoid matching colors like the plague.

the_izzle Avatar

My approach is usually to use colours that compliment my skin tone and features.

I would sometimes use a colour that might compliment my outfit but the former is usually my approach.

Amy Avatar

I like to coordinate but I am even worse – I coordinate to my nail color – if I am wearing coral nail polish, then my makeup and outfit coordinate with my nails – oh, man – I guess I am very OCD!! LOL!!

katy Avatar

i usually always wear natural shades of makeup, but i will still match the tones of my outfit to my makeup. it’s not really something i think about anymore. i just get dressed and after while i’m putting on makeup i kind of just know what shades to use and how much makeup to wear.

CeeBee Avatar

Not usually – I like my makeup to compliment and enhance me, so I look pretty no matter what I’m wearing (or not, LOL!) though I have been known to have a pop of bright eyeliner that contrasts or matches my outfit. If I have really dramatic makeup I tend to stick with black or something neutral, instead of matching.
But to each their own!

Jaime Avatar

I don’t match my makeup to my outfit, mostly because I wear all black to work, but I do match my makeup to my hair accessory.

I’m weird.

Michelle Avatar

I match my makeup sometimes. But I actually wear a lot of neutral colors, so most of the time my makeup is matching some sort of colorful accessory I’m sporting.

Deb Avatar

I try to match the theme of my outfit rather than the colors themselves. Like neutrals for work, bright colors for bright clothes. But I’m more likely to do contrasting colors, like if I’m wearing teal, I like to do orange eye looks. Subtle ones, but orange.

Cristal Avatar

not really matching, more like complementing involving matching now and then lol

but yeah I gotta do my makeup so it goes well with my outfit 😀
