Haul: More City Color Shimmer Shadows! They are sooo creamy. I hauled YAS, Sandstorm, Cleo, U Jelly?, and Oh So Naughty. Also 2 of the pump-top Bioderma Micellar solutions – trying out Sébium for the warm weather, and then Sensibio for the cooler weather (and the Bioderma lip balm to bump me up to free shipping)
Weekend plans: A few of my pepper plants died, so I might go buy some replacements. And we put down our deposit for the bathroom remodel, so maybe start making some firmer decisions on materials and color scheme (I’m so scared to commit!)
Do you have any goals you’re working on?: At work: become more proactive with my customers and more engaged with my sales partners; at home: stay more on stop of tidiness and in-progress projects; myself: cut back on makeup purchases and eat more fresh produce!

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Julia, do you like the pump tops? I bought one and I swear it makes me feel like an idiot! Every time I put my cotton pad on top and press down, it squirts everywhere! I tried pushes down hard, soft, fast, and slow. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong…unless I need to use a triple thick cotton ball instead?

Good luck and have fun with the bathroom remodel! My daughter bought a house at the end of last year and as a gift, I paid for the materials and my bf added an extra full bath. I can’t say he liked the work but shopping with my daughter for the fixtures and colors was a lot of fun!

Julia Avatar

Oh my- maybe your pump is faulty? I use regular cotton balls and I actually have to pump 2 or 3 times to get enough! Are you keeping the bottle upright? if you tip or squeeze it the pressure might be too great.

That was really nice of you to do for your daughter! I’m really excited to have everything be updated and new, but I almost wish that the room was just nice when we bought the house because I agonize over all of the minute decisions!

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

I think the pump must be faulty. I keep it sitting on my sink counter and just press down with the cotton pad. One press (regardless of pressure or speed) is actually too much and, as I said, ends up squirting the water.

I told her I was giving her the “gift of indoor plumbing”! LOL It came out really nice. At some point she may add a half bath in the basement (which she intends to finish). I know it would be easier if everything was nice when you got the house, but honestly this way it will be customized to exactly what you want. We actually purchased both brushed nickel and chrome faucets, brought everything back, and looked at them in the bathroom before she picked which she preferred. She also went from the idea of buying a set shower/tub inset to deciding to have the entire things custom tiled (which looks great). Try to enjoy the process!

Genevieve Avatar

What a great mum you are! A lovely bathroom is so beautiful and it is a gift that she will certainly use for a long time. Also it is fun to go out shopping with your daughter too.

Julia Avatar

Not to be an enabler (lol!), but they are really nice – fortunately the brand is super affordable and they run discount codes all the time. I think I am as in love with these as everybody else is with Colourpop. Powder shadow for the win!

Julia Avatar

Oh So Naughty is INTENSE. It seriously looks exactly the same in the pan/ swatched/ on lid. it’s smooth, shimmery and gorgeous. U Jelly? is pretty, but reads extremely pink on me – I thought it would be a little more purpley/lilac, but- I think my skintone just dominates it. I was able to top with UD Tonic to get the look I wanted, but heads up if you are a warm skintone!

Fran Avatar

Well, my skin tone is cool, but pink near my eyes isn’t usually all that flattering to me, so I’ll have to think some more about U Jelly — there’s just something about that particular shade that appeals to me! Thanks for the heads up 🙂

Lacey J. Avatar

Haul: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation and Concealer in the shade Buttermilk, (almost perfect match) love it. Nyx Glitter Primer.

Weekend Plans: Cleaning and go to see Finding Dory

Goals: quitting smoking, day 9, cold turkey. tried before with Nicorette and it didn’t work out.

Pearl Avatar

You go, Lacey. You got this. Heads up – you will most likely be ditzy and not be able to remember much or be a bit scatterbrained. It passes but the first 3 weeks are pretty rough. Oranges and orange juice help (I read vitamin C helps rid the nicotine and takes the edge off).

Katherine T. Avatar

Lacey, don’t give up, keep going! It’s a a really important goal, your skin and body will thank you. And just think of all the awesome makeup you can buy with that cigarette money 🙂

Katherine T. Avatar

Mellan, did mamma catch you sneaking her makeup? Love the kohl eyeliner 😉
*Haul – Maybelline Loaded Bold Lipsticks in Smoking Red & Sapphire Siren, both are bold and stunning, love! Got them for about $3 each, between BOGO 50% off and $5 reward dollars at Walgreens
*Weekend – swatch and purge my huge lippie collection, dreading the task, but must be done to make way for new ones and to make sure I don’t buy 5 of the same color! Trying to narrow my wishlist for the 20% off Ulta Platinum Perk sale
*Goals – get more exercise, cut back on sweets, restrain myself from buying too much makeup (on-going project!)

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Katherine – Do you have any tips/ideas on how to keep track of your lippies? I REALLY need to get a handle on what I have. I do have everything sorted by type and color but honestly I can’t remember what I have until I pick up a lipstick and look at it. I’d love to be able to have a visual of each shade and the brand/name. I looked for an app but couldn’t find one. (Awesome deal at Walgreens btw!)

Katherine T. Avatar

Yes, I love finding a great deal! I’m thinking maybe you can swatch the lippie on your lips, take a picture, and keep it stored and sorted on your computer/smartphone by color, brand, formula? So that way you know what reds, purples, pinks you already have?

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Yikes – I don’t think I have enough storage space 😉 Actually, it’s a great idea. But wow, don’t know if I have the motivation to swatch hundreds of shades. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was already an app that had everything swatched and you could just check off what you had and it would store it for you?! (Shout out to Christine – develop said app and make more $$$! I know I’d buy it!)

Katherine T. Avatar

Yeah, I don’t have time to take that many pics and store them either! And I don’t think there’s an online library that stores every color from every brand. I wish I was a little more disciplined about keeping track of my lipsticks before I started accumulating my stash, but you know what they say, never too late to start! I’m doing a big purge and swatch fest this weekend on my stash, so that should help. And I do have them organized by color, which helps a lot. So before I buy like a purple lipstick, I will swatch some (if not all) of my existing purples to make sure I’m not buying the same color. And periodic swatching will keep the colors/brands fresh in your mind.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

I’m still app hunting. If you have an I Phone (I don’t) apparently there’s a free app called Stash. There’s an Android one called Snupps. I just installed it. I think it’s going to work. You can create “shelves” (which you can opt to keep private). So I’ve started by creating shelves like “Cream Lipstick”, “Shimmer Lipstick”, etc. Then it lets you add pictures of items with tags under each shelf. I’ll know better once I get more into it but it looks promising!

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: I don’t know if you’d consider it a goal, but I’d like to travel more.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

I swatched the palette (but haven’t posted the swatches yet). I plan on actually wearing the shades tomorrow. Extremely interesting though, the palette swatches beautifully – intensely pigmented, creamy, etc. BUT on swatching (no primer, daylight bulbs) the shades look very different than in pan. In pan the shades appear as cool-neutral greys with no clear undertone. On swatching, the shades are all darker and have a blue undertone. I’m very curious to see how they appear over my primer!

Katherine T. Avatar

Michele, can you let me know how you like that Artis Elite Oval 6 brush? I have a petite face, and that looks like the perfect size for applying my foundation. I also tested out the Diorshow Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer with mixed results. My lashes are very short, thin, and skimpy (almost invisible), and they don’t hold curl well. I usually have to torture them with a lash curler to get any curl, and even then, the curl droops by by mid-day. Add in oily lids, and a wet waterline, and mascaras usually melt on me. First, the not-so-great news. I tried the primer out with a number of different mascaras, and I didn’t think the primer added very much volume or length, but if your mascara is already volumizing/lengthening, then maybe not a big deal. I think their old lash primer formula did a much better job of adding volume, but it’s been DC’d. But the good news is that it does curl my lashes very well (and WITHOUT a curler, which is a miracle), and the curl lasts all day (another miracle). The primer is very lightweight, so it doesn’t weigh down the curl. And it did a really good job of preventing my mascaras from running or smudging, even the non-waterproof ones, another miracle. The primer goes on white, so it will help make colored mascaras pop. So even though it’s quite pricey at $30, I will be repurchasing, unless I find a better formula.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

I wanted to use the brush more than once before I responded. I opted for the Artis 6 for concealer and the 8 for my foundation (I’ve seen many MUA use the 10 but I think that would be way too big – my face is also smallish.) The 6 is described as being good for foundation but it is significantly smaller than the 8, which isn’t that big. I would say the 6 is roughly the size of 2 quarters. I wasn’t going to post it yet, but I’ll go ahead and upload the pic to my Instagram so you can get a better idea of the sizes. I found the pics on the retailer sites that sell them are pretty deceiving (they look larger on the websites than they actually are)! The brushes are VERY nice and feel great on your face. I can’t speak to how 6 does with foundation since I used it for concealer, but both brushes handles different products very well. the finish was better than I’ve ever been able to achieve with any brush or sponge…the look is airbrushed and perfect. The other bonus is that with the brushes I found I use much less product. They are expensive but I don’t regret the purchase at all. Not only are they wonderful for application but overtime I’ll easily save the extra money on product I don’t have to use. (I used 6 with UD concealer, UD color corrector, Tony Moly brightener, and Trish McEvoy brightener. I used 8 with Shiseido and Dior foundations.)

Katherine T. Avatar

2 quarters, wow, that is small! But I think the Oval 6 might actually work on my face because it’s really petite. If it doesn’t, than maybe I can use #6 with concealer around corners and edges of my nose, and use # 7 or # 8 for my face. Ok, will need to download instagram and check it out. Thanks so much!

Haul: I stopped at Ulta on the day you reviewed UD’s Sancho lipstick, and after trying four different colors, three sale’s associates insisted that Sancho was “the one,” so I took that baby home with me! It’s fun to buy something impulsively from time to time. Most of my purchases are painstakingly researched and considered before I actually pull the trigger. I actually had a second impulse purchase in the last week or so: I immediately purchased Make Up Geek’s Valentine blush after your review also. I thought I might enjoy the matte finish because I would get stronger pigmentation and I was right. It’s a really pretty pop of pink on my cheeks!

Weekend plans: I wanted to let you know the Father’s Day brisket was a hit! This weekend I am going to make some healthy meals and as always, go to the gym.

Goals: Eat healthy and stay on top of my workouts! Wear all my beautiful spring make up colors one more time before I transition to my bolder summer hues.

Awwww, Mellaaaaan <3

Haul: A new Clinique cleanser and mask, a new Clarins Lip Perfector and some Missha make-up.

Weekend plans: Off to a summer party in a bit with my girlfriend and after we're heading out to dinner with the boys!

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: Hmmm not really… Just, ya know, keep generally improving and getting better at life and shizzle 😉

Fran Avatar

Mellan sure does look like he’s yearning for something! Kind of like me at a makeup counter 😉

We had a pet crisis this week. I’ve got two tiny hamsters who’ve been living together since birth — and they used to be so cute, always cuddled up together. Now, hamsters are meant to be solitary creatures, but, with the dwarf hamsters, if they’re littermates and have never been separated, they can sometimes live together happily all their lives, and it looked like that would happen with Marya and Sonya. But I’ve been watching them closely because they’d been squabbling for a while before settling down together. The little one, Sonya, has been making a lot of vociferous protests against the big one, Marya, bugging her. Then I rarely found them cuddled together. Then, on Wednesday night, after Sonya quite pointedly told Marya to back off, Marya backed off about a hamster-length and leaped on her in attack mode, right in front of me! I was quite upset, we drilled some holes in a plastic storage binr to make a makeshift space for Marya to stay over night, then yesterday I had to go out and get a separate “habitat” for Marya after consulting with our vet. These cute and cuddly little creatures can be so territorial that they kill each other. What looks like dominance behavior just doesn’t result in one of them backing down, they don’t have the genes for backing down built in because they’re solitary food-hoarders. So now we have two hamster cages. Sonya, the little one, seems relieved, more comfortable and confident. Marya, the aggressor, seems lonely — especially so that first night alone in the container, a little less so now that she has a proper home, but still not quite herself yet. I’ve got to play with each of them separately, now, too, which is more fun in some ways, because eventually they’ll each transfer their primary attachment to me instead of to each other, but I feel sad about them not getting along any more.

Haul: I was very naughty this week, I think rewarding myself for completing school and passing my exam.

More Urban Decay Vice lipsticks: Heroine, with Bobby Dazzle to top it off in the center (looks really cool); Twitch, Firebird, Cruel, Crisis, Phone Call, Plaid. Loving them! My local ULTA gave me a Revolution Anarchy and After Dark for purchasing the Vices, they’ll be great in my kit.

Dr.Jart+ BB Mate Contouring Kit — not sure if I’d like it, I bought it prepared to return it, but I do really like it. The contour shade is a bit warm for a contour, but OK for summer, and the medium shade is useful mostly for blending, it seems, but these are really pigmented and blend seamlessly and easily with my Dr.Jart+ BB Detox cream that I’ve been wearing a lot this spring/summer, for a gorgeously glowing look while adding more SPF, which is great for me.

Sephora Lash Stash to Go — I’ve become a sucker for mascara deluxe samples, since I’ve yet to find my HG mascara, and if there’s one in the bunch that I already know is a good mascara but isn’t my HG, I can just use it in my kit. It’s hard for me to discard a full-sized mascara that I’ve paid $20-30 after 3-6 months, so these kinds of sets solve that problem.

Mascara news: I’ve discovered a way to keep my mascara from smudging! Since the demise of Anastasia’s Lash Genius, I’ve been kind of up a creek without a paddle, because ALL mascaras, except tubing mascaras, smudge on me (and those flake). ULTA and Clarins make good waterproof top coats, but they don’t stand up to the oil and sweat that my skin can put out. Someone on this blog mentioned using NARS eyeshadow primer to smudge-proof their mascara, and I tried that, and it seemed to work, but the application seemed like a fussy extra step to me. So, one day, while I was putting on my Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (the weather now being hot and humid), I just smeared it all over my face, eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows included — and guess what! Everything holds beautifully, I don’t have to bother with a separate eyeshadow primer because my eyeshadow goes on great and lasts all day, and so do my eyebrows — and my mascara never smudges, not even the tiniest little bit. And it’s great as a primer in the undereye area under my Dr.Jart+, although it’s not as great as an undereye primer under my IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream and Bye Bye Under Eye. Now I just have to see if I can even skip the waterproofing topcoat… maybe not while allergy season is still in progress.

Skin care — 20% off sale at dermstore:

MDSolarSciences Mineral Moisture Defense Body Broad Spectrum SPF 50: this is turning out to be one of the better mineral-based sunscreens for body that I’ve tried. Actually probably the best. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Pure Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 40 is marketed for face, although I often use it on hands and arms as well as neck and decollete, and it’s $30 for 2 oz. vs. $39 for 4 oz. for the MDSolarSciences product, and I like them about the same amount. The MDSolarSciences goes on easier, but I feel like it rubs off easier, too. Both leave a bit of a white cast, which does fade with time, but slowly. The advantage is that I don’t have to wait 15-20 minutes for it to start working, and with less exposure to the chemical sunscreens I lessen my risk of becoming allergic to them (my rosaceic face and chest and sensitive neck can’t tolerate them, but which I’m still able to use on the rest of my body).

Colorescience Sunforgettable Loose Mineral Sunscreen Brush Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in Fair, which is quite fair. This seems like it will be easier to use and more compatible with my skin tone than the similar Peter Thomas Roth product that I have. Perfect for carrying in my bag to quickly renew sun protection on face, hands, and arms throughout the day, because I purchased it with:
Colorescience brush cleaner, made to clean the brush on this product.

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance Plus, which is crazy-expensive skin care of the kind I rarely purchase, but for some reason I got the idea it would help with spots on my neck and chest where my skin seems to be reacting with dermatitis in response to my own sweat. I can go to sleep at night with nothing, or a very light and non-irritating toner, serum, or lotion on my neck, and wake up in the morning with a stubborn red rash in the creases that lasts for days or weeks, no matter what I throw at it or keep away from it — and something similar happens where my bra holds sweat against skin folds under my breasts on hot and humid days (sorry if that’s TMI — I share in case someone else experiences something similar). Oddly, it works, and it worked fast! So I guess it’s worth the price, because the rash on my neck, besides being uncomfortable, can be quite noticeable and unsightly (not good for an esthetician), and Paula’s Choice vitamin C booster, which has some of the same ingredients, didn’t do anything for this particular rash — neither did hydrocortisone cream or salicylic acid or tea tree oil or anything else I could think of throwing at it.

Weekend plans: Still resting and recovering, reading some good books — Rubicon: the last years of the Roman Republic, by Tom Holland, and The Skin Care Answer Book by Mark Lee.
Goals: do my Reiki homework; get my resume polished up, write some cover letters, and start job hunting; excavate the piles that developed in my room while I was busy with school 🙂 Good luck with the meal planning, Christine, I know it’s challenging cooking for two! We make a lot of dishes that we eat two or even three times, having them leftover later in the week with different side dishes. If “The Complete Cooking for Two” cookbook by America’s Test Kitchen had more vegetarian recipes in it, I’d consider getting it for us, because my son and I are always trying new recipes. “Healthy Cooking for Two” by Rockridge Press looks good, too…

Nancy T Avatar

Fran, I will definitely try out the Hourglass Mineral Primer all over my lids, too! Not sure it, or anything else will help with my very teary left eye ruining some more involved eye makeup looks, though. It would seem that some of my pencil eyeliners are setting it off. It’s not my eyeshadows or gel liners or mascara. Just a few of my Sephora liners. Cocoa and Purple Stilettos seem to be the worst offenders.

I won’t share the hamster tragedy from a daycare I formerly serviced. It’s too gross and unnerving. But when my Yorkie got Lyme, he turned on my dachshund, and the dachsie was devastated. He didn’t know what he had done wrong. Pretty much had to separate them, and there’s only 1 human, so it was pretty sad….rough and sad. They had been total bffs. At times I could put one under the cover and one over. the Yorkie mellowed when he developed collapsed trachea, and that ending was worse than losing my mother. Real horror show. Takeaway: anyone who has a small dog, who is prone to cartilage deficiencies should supplement with glucosamine/ chondroitin. Also, be very watchful of any creature who develops Lyme, as it can cause terrible neuro and even personality changes. Like your idea about the primer. So cool to discover alternative uses. You are a good divergent thinker. All the American K skincare people I read/watch use Curology. Don’t think I spelled it right. It’s online derm, where you send in photos and get a script. Considering so much of derm is cosmetic and not covered, it’s actually a good idea. You might google them, if you don’t want to do a doc in person. Rashes in those places often have a fungal component, and a doc might give you nystatin powder. Clears stuff well, and non liquid is good in those damp areas. I’d love to have some for prn use.

Christine Avatar

I’m so sorry to hear that your two hamsters won’t be able to live together any longer 🙁 At least there is a solution where both can live happy lives, even if more separately than together!

I’m going to have to smear Mineral Veil all over my face someday to see how that works for me, LOL!

Fran Avatar

It’s like lockdown for my makeup on the hot and humid days we’ve been having, LOL! The Dr.Jart+ BB Detox is not as transfer-resistant for me as the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream, but the color is closer to my cool undertones, so the primer as well as a setting spray is a help 🙂

I discovered later this morning that the littlest hamster had given the bigger, bullying one quite a bite before I got them separated! I noticed that the bigger one had lost weight, and found the scab under what I had thought was just a patch of fur that she hadn’t groomed properly. Now I know why she’s been seeming so down in the dumps! I’m spending extra time cuddling her while she recovers. It’s not really her fault that she kept bugging the little one… she was just being a hamster.

Fran Avatar

She’s recovering 🙂 The little rodents have remarkable powers of recovery, thank goodness. If only she hadn’t felt such a driving need to bug her little sister!

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

OMG, I used to have hamsters as a teen, young adult. I loved them. Mine were very tame but I kept them separated, not based foreknowledge but space. I had opposite sexes but also had to separate because of too many babies. How funny that you carry on the tradition. I can’t imagine doing it now bc I have a terrier who flips out in the pet store.

Tammy Avatar

I will try the the Hourglass Primer too! I had a similar experience recently. I always put on my foundation, followed by my eyeshadow primer. One day I put on my eyeshadow primer first, then put my foundation, and I actually got some of the foundation on top of the primer (which is NOT a good look on 50 year old eyelids!). I thought I was going to have to take everything off and start over, but I decided to put my eyeshadow on…and those shadows POPPED! I have never been able to get Isla from Anastasia’s Self Made Palette to show up on my lids, and this time it not only was true to pan, but you could see it was green with my glasses on from several feet away. That shadow did not budge either. I wore it for a 10 hour workday, followed by gym, and it was still going strong.

Aw, sweet boy Mellan. Please kiss his little face for me. 🙂

Haul: Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette
Becca Tigerlily blush
Anastasia Sun Dipped Glow Kit
MAC Beauty Powder in Pearl Sunshine

Weekend plans: Nothing specific. Watching the season finale of Game of Thrones!

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: Losing weight! I’ve been trying to be good about going to the gym and not eating so many sweets (major sweet tooth here!). My husband and I are trying to make a habit of go swimming every week.
Getting my blog up and running again. I let it fall by the way side a few years ago when I planning my wedding and never picked it back up again.

Pteetsa Avatar

Tammy, the Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette is so gorgeous. The eyeshadows are kind of powdery, but unlike the Stila shadows, so far they don’t irritate my eyes. I’d be really sad if I couldn’t wear them; the colors are so beautiful.

Pearl Sunshine is beautiful, too! Just the barest hint of glow. Really nice. I haven’t tried the other two yet.

Which ones have you gotten already?

Haul: Jeffree Star Beauty Killer Palette (love!). Maybelline Bold Color Sensation Lipstick in Gone Greige, Grey Over It, Violet Vixen, and Sapphire Siren. Notoriously Morbid eyeshadows: The Lady Amalthea, Bad Juju, Noble Rage, Your Total is $6.66, Rain on Cold Glass, Lizard On a Window Pane, She’s Full of Secrets, I’ts Not Raining In Here, Gilded Mirror, Garmonbozia, Black Cat Crossing, 25 Years, Evil Eye; samples of blushes in Daoine Sidhe and Anywhere.

Weekend plans: Nothing exciting. I’m going to touch up my roots.

Do you have any goals you’re working on? not at the moment

Rachel R. Avatar

I haven’t gotten to play with all the new ones yet, but in general I love their shadows. I’ve been buying from them for a couple years. They do fantastic reds and purples. Their colors and finishes are unusual, and they have great themes/names. The powders finely sifted, and they go on pigmented and blend really nicely. Some of the super-glittery shades need a sticky base or glitter primer, but that’s not surprising for a loose shadow.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: I think the only thing I bought this week was a mini Fix+ from MAC to take away with me.
Weekend plans: packing for NYC and leaving on Sunday (I might squeeze in a gym session on Saturday)
Goals: get back into yoga more regularly. A year ago, I was going 2-4 times a week and then the hot summer, DH’s carpal tunnel surgery and just getting out of the habit really cut down on my practice. My flexibility, balance and overall well-being have suffered and I really need to make it a goal to practise regularly now that school is over.

Haul: ABH Modern Renaissance palette, which was 100% worth breaking my no-buy for! ❤

Weekend plans: Nothing specific, but I do want to take my daughter to the splash pad!

Goals: Stick with my no-buy for more than a week at a time, eat better, keep going to the gym consistently, and a very big goal that I’m not comfortable posting anywhere online.

Stephanie Avatar

It’s really pretty, and the shadows are incredibly easy to blend and work with!

Today, I used Red Ochre on either side of the lid, Primavera and a little Vermeer mid-lid, Warm Taupe in the crease, and Cyprus Umber as liner. Yesterday, I did a smoky look involving Love Letter, Golden Ochre, Buon Fresco, and Vermeer.

Erin Avatar

Haul: Nothing! I want to but I’m still really sick. Have another appointment today.
Weekend: Mostly sleeping and being ill still. I want to have other plans but it’s probably not going to happen.
Goals: Right now, to get better. That’s really the only thing on my mind because I can’t do much else until I am.

ouineque Avatar

Mellan is really beautiful!

Finally I got 2 (two!) finally free lipsticks from Mac! ?????Mac released another batch I suppose. But now I am really really on a no-buy for at least three months.

Goals: for two months I am suffering from headaches/tension due to a concussion. (A part from my holidays: then I didn’t feel it!). Just now I did a restorative yoga class: it is like magic! I felt better during these two hours then the whole rest of the day. So my goal is to do more of this yoga at home, twice, three times a day, and recover quicker. ?

ouineque Avatar

Thanks Katherine! 🙂 Yes it’s very difficult, I am so active usually (gym and a quite strong kind of yoga, work etc)… But these postures/exercises are amazing: they bring relieve right away, so I want to do them several times per day now. Thanks again, have good weekend!

Haul-MAC Studio Careblend powder in Medium Dark, MAC Viva Glam I (Thanks Christine!) and MAC Blush (violet/pink from Fashion Flock)

Weekend Plans-Kayaking with DH and taking it easy after a few busy weekends in a row.

Goals-Stay on top of gardens and DH’s bookkeeping. One is easy and one is hard in the summer. hee hee

Nancy T Avatar

Mellan already looks super fancy and handsome, Momma! ???

Haul: Nothing at all!

Weekend plans: Do my increasingly irritatingly long curly hair; wash, condition, apply leave-in keratin treatment, oils, blow dry straightening treatment, wait for everything to absorb a bit, blow dry that mess! Other than that, mani-pedi, stay by AC. Go to meeting in Sunday.

Do you have any goals you’re working on? : 1.) Curbing my makeup spending so that I can get a t.v., new lightweight dinnerware(Corningware), a vacuum WITH attachments! And save for a move to either the West Valley (boringville!) where my son lives, or conversely, back to NJ.
2.) Exercise more! I need to get up and move to the music way more often, as I am not getting any younger, and I’ve got to stay in shape somewhat. Being a dancer when I was younger kept my body in fantastic shape, but middle-age pudge had really crept in! Plus, dance is heavy cardio and bone-bearing exercise, so it’ll keep my internal structures healthier, too.
3.) Step away from that damn ice cream! Yes, I’m an ice cream ADDICT.
4.) Get coloring books for ADULTS! And memory building word puzzles and such, to help me with my ADHD component of being on the ASD spectrum.

Nancy T Avatar

It is!!! I think it’s the tediousness of it, because there’s a lot of steps and products. And waiting a good half hour for that keratin treatment to really soak in. All together? Depending on whether I’m in hurry or not, 1 1/2 -2 hours. At the height of monsoon season, I sometimes just twist it up into a topknot while wet!

Nancy T Avatar

As a young child , I had a little over 2 years of classical ballet, as a preteen and into my teens, modern jazz ballet and a little bit of gymnastics thrown in. Later on, I just took elements of all the above and mixed it up with hip hop and other more quick paced stylevof dance movements. Now, I just move my tush to the rhythm! But no longer as flexible as days of yore.

Katherine T. Avatar

99% of our dinnerware is Corning, love! They are SO lightweight, microwaveable, dish washer safe, and almost impossible to break. We’ve had our set for 15 years, and they look brand new.

Pearl Avatar

Looking good, Mellan! He’s patrolling to make sure Mom’s stash is safe!

Haul:
MAC:
Eyeshadow: refill pan, Plumage (back-ordered)

Shiseido:
Synchro Skin Foundation: Golden 3, so far I’m liking this because it keeps my skin an even texture all day, regardless of the temperature outside. I’ve only been testing it a few days but I plan on keeping it and making it work if there are any problems later because it’s a good color match. It is very similar in finish to Giorgio Armani LSUVF and MAC Matchmaster.

Rouge Bunny Rouge:
Highlighter: Sweet to Touch – it’s like a more matte, amber-ish gold. I like that I can have this as my “base” and use it for a subdued highlight and I can add a more intense highlight on top if I want.
Eyeshadows: Whispering Ibis, Solstice Halcyon, Trumpeter Koel
Tinted moisturizers: Quercus and Adansonia – neither was a good color match for me by itself but mixing them works. I got these for the winter because that’s when I’m really dry – I’ve been testing them out under foundation and I think I’d be better off just powdering with a mineral powder foundation (TRUE, Medium 3) or MAC Skinfinish Natural. Either way, I think it’ll be good for winter skin.

Urban Decay:
Stackable Palette – I only had about 5 Urban Decay shadows to depot, but found these work really well for MAC Extra Dimension eyeshadows too, so I bought another one. Instead of popping out the pan (like how a refill pan would look), you just pop out the plastic disc thing from the eyeshadow container and put it in the UD palette. The UD palette has sturdy rubbery foam or something for holding the disk things in place and it works perfectly. Now that I’ve got a way to put those in palettes, I have more room to fill up my eyeshadow acrylic organizer! (see goals I’m working on, ha ha)
Eyeliners: Vice, Rockstar, Mushroom, Whiskey
Weekend Plans: Homebound – it’s been a busy week and I just want to open a bottle of wine and leisurely cook (for the week?), do laundry, watch a movie, play with my stash (that usually means switch around how they’re displayed/organized more than playing with the colors right now) and just futz around the house.

Do you have any goals you are working on?:
Freshening up the house and sticking to my organizing and de-cluttering schedule – I’m going room by room, drawer by drawer, hanger by hanger, container by container, etc.

Christine and for anyone else that wants to eat better – there is a new app called Mealime (it’s mealtime without the T). It’s free and it’s been really helpful because instead of having to think up what to eat, mine your recipe collection and then put together a recipe list, then a grocery list, it does it all for you. You go to the eating preference page and you check off your allergies/sensitivities (dairy, gluten, nuts, etc.), check off what kind of foods you don’t like and pick what kind of eating plan you want (low-carb, regular, vegetarian, pescatarian, etc.), how many meals you want to cook for the week and for how many servings and it gives you recipes! It’s been great, I’ve been using it for a few weeks and I like the recipes. I’m using the low-carb setting because I can get into enough trouble with baking on my own, thankyouverymuch. For me, this has helped streamline everything because it gives you an ingredient list, a grocery list, and then you just swipe it to the next screen to see the recipe and embedded in the recipe are the amounts of everything so you don’t have to toggle back. You can favorite recipes and build an archive. It’s been really useful so far. 🙂

Pearl Avatar

Oh, forgot about the other goal – to realize that I have enough and don’t need to buy anymore. Frankly I need to calm the hell down. 😐 Even if something is not LE, I still get a little bit of panic that I have to buy it NOW because if I wait, it won’t be there or will be out of stock everywhere. I budget for beauty purchases so I shouldn’t feel this gaspy frantic need to get all the things all the time. I need to check for dupes first and just because I have room in an organizer or display doesn’t mean I need to fill the void RIGHT NOW. I have to remember that there will always be enough and that I can be discerning. The fomo is strong sometimes and I need to be better about mindful buying for me and my wants/needs, not just because something is the newest thing (example: MAC Foiled eyeshadows).

Nancy T Avatar

Pearl, I love the sound of that meal planner app! Thank you for that tip!

Also, I know what you mean about the frantic, panicky FOMO. My goodness, I sometimes feel like the makeup has begun to control ME because of it! So I’m also going to try to resist and just be much more selective about what I buy. It may just be as difficult as breaking any other habit.

Pearl Avatar

Welcome! Fomo be damned, I’m going to set a threshold for the next few months! Maybe just x amount of pieces or maybe only spending under a certain amount, but I have got to slow things down (if only to save up for the holiday launches ? ha!)

Anne Avatar

Haul: Repurchased my First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Polish and got some Sephora cotton rounds to get up to the “free crap” threshold to get the Vice lipstick sample blister-pack thingy. Also got a Kiko shadow stick in 10 Emerald Green when they had $9 free shipping to try out the brand.

Weekend plans: Chill and catch up on some shows/movies.

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: Fixing my spine.

Anne Avatar

Mostly this British show called Grantchester. It’s about a vicar in 1950’s Cambridgeshire who teams up with a curmudgeonly detective to solve murders. Surprisingly good, not overly dramatic, not unintelligent, and well-written/acted/produced. A good “mellow but not too mellow” show. Unfortunately it only has 12 episodes over the last 2 season because it’s quality over quantity, but they’re filming season 3 now so I have another 6 or so episodes to look forward to.

Alecto Avatar

I just finished sampling all 24 colours in the blister pack this morning and writing up notes on them. My lips hurt! The sample pack was a great idea on UD’s part, since it forced me to try some colors I would never have thought to, and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice they looked on me.

Lulle Avatar

Haul: the Becca x Jaclyn Hill face palette, a MAC Huggable lipstick that was on sale, my first (I tried it once and absolutely loved the formula!), one of the new Lancôme Glow Subtil Silky Creme Highlighter in Glowing Lights, and a really pretty sparkly purple nail lacquer from Forever 21 (they’re so clever to put those near the register, how can you resist??).
Weekend plans: nothing special so far!
Current goals: manage to write posts ahead and schedule them for my blog, instead of doing everything last minute; starting going to yoga classes regularly again; improve my running pace and endurance. I’ve also been offered a job and I’d like to start ASAP but they’re not going forward with the process, and I’m afraid it’s out of my control.

Deborah S. Avatar

Haul: I am still trying to decide if I want the Too Faced Too Cute ?? I think that is the name. Maybe I don’t need it if I can’t remember what it is called!! Anyway, I know it isn’t the most cohesive palette out there but there is something about the green shade that is calling my name. I am such a sucker for green eye shadow and don’t have many I like. Other than that I think that I am pretty set for now. I am saving my money for the upcoming Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale.
Weekend Plans: We are leaving early tomorrow morning for CA to take my ex-husband for his much anticipated thoracic surgery. Praying everything goes well.
Goals: Still trying to lose that weight that I gained 35 years ago!! Want to paint my bedroom and put up crown molding. We’ll see after his surgery is complete. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Arantxa Avatar

Haul: NYX Maison lipstick, Kiko lip pencil x2 (they were 50% off and I didn’t even know they had sale. Yay!), a backup for Kiko 208 watershadow, MAC Amorous lipstick, Heroine for my mom and my bestfriend, and Raizin blush. La Splash summer daze liquid lipsticks in Flix & Chill and Can’t Even. Unfortunately I did not like the liquid lipsticks. My all time favorite perfume La vie est belle Intense and a sample of my second favorite that came with it; Olympea by Paco Rabanne. I tried the Milani 2-in1 foundation but I’m not really blown away by the formula. I also got a new LA Girl Pro Concealer in Fawn, which turned out to be the perfect match for my skin tone compared to the one I used before. And last but not least, I’ve bought the Real Techniques Sculpting Set. I really like the settingbrush and the fanbrush is way better than my current Zoeva fanbrush.
Weekend plans: Besides the usual studying, I have no idea actually. But I hope everyone here is going to have a great weekend!
Goals: decorating my new room all by myself this summer/fall, passing my exams next week so I’m finally accepted into my second year of lawschool. I have more longterm goals but for now I think this is just fine ?.

Naomi Avatar

Aw man I just hauled so SO much! I’ll just list some general things that I like and I’m excited to try: colourpop ultra metallics and sculpting stix (two contour shades and a highlight) sadly these haven’t arrived yet ?, my allure, glossybox, target and Walmart beauty boxes (cancelling them all after this month), Sephora play box (keeping this subscription!), lavanila vanilla and coconut deodorant (tried toms and I still reek…), my first 4 ABH single eyeshadows(!), essence lash princess false lash mascara, loreal voluminous (OG and carbon black), tarte blissful blush, and it cosmetics CC eye cream full coverage concealer! whew my wallet hurts
one last thing… UD vice lipstick in wildfire. so gorgeous!

this was all purchase in the past day….. it was a #treatyoself day! I’ve been good about not buying too much makeup or any skincare for the past couple months so I thought I deserved it plus I got a good deal

my weekend plans: I’m moving! so packing, cleaning, and hosting an estate sale

goals: get things ready for college! the stress is so real!

Naomi Avatar

I just feel like it’s the best value, it’s only $10 a month and one of the only beauty boxes that a) doesn’t always come with a nail polish (I rarely do my nails) and b) all the brands Sephora carries are top notch and I KNOW anything I get in my box I can easily pick up from Sephora if I end up liking it!

Genevieve Avatar

Mellon is so cute…
Haul: Body Wash, try some new lipsticks out by Maybelline
Weekend plans: Looking after my grand daughter Olivia, as her baby brother was sent to hospital late last night in an ambulance with a really bad case of croup. He is stable, but still in hospital today. Both my son and daughter in law are with the baby (Lachlan is 5 months old) and Olivia is with us. So we will take her out to a park today.
Goals: To finish de-cluttering our house and fix up the garden.

kjh Avatar

Lachlan. Love it. Since I have no family, it sounds like a great name for a border terrier. Mellan’s always channels me into wanting more dogs. They ARE like potato chips.

Genevieve Avatar

Thank you for your kind thoughts and wishes. He came home from hospital late yesterday afternoon. He is much better now, but still has a bit of the croup left. Lachlan is a real cutie and it was hard to see him sick. When my daughter in law rang to tell us they were home from hospital, the first thing Olivia asked was “How was Lachlan feeling?” – which was lovely coming from a two year old.

Veronica Avatar

Haul: UD Gwen Stefani eye palette – for $25, why resist?

Weekend plans: I’m revving up to the take the MCAT in September, so I finally decided to need to sit down this weekend to get to reviewing the math and chemistry.

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: I’m attempting to clean up my diet and get back into shape. I’ve had a lot of digestive issues that my doctor thinks may be linked to IBS or one of those fun disorders, so I’ve been slowly cutting out potential triggers (dairy, legumes, onions, etc.) that are known to cause problems. I feel better, buuuuuuut…I miss cheese. 🙁

kjh Avatar

Good luck with your gizzards (my mum’s words for lower gi tract.). That is one big, hard area to differentially diagnose and manage. Hope it’s not immune mediated. Even figuring out what probiotic works for you, is a royal pita.

Nancy T Avatar

Veronica, I definitely feel your gut pain, literally. I myself have Crohn’s Disease (severe advanced, but well controlled). So all I can tell you is that if you can avoid offending foods as much as humanly possible, it is a big help. The cheese cravings are real, though, because gut diseases can seriously deplete calcium absorption. Other vites (B12, in particular) and minerals, too. Lots of trial and error figuring out which foods, or just certain ingredients that may show up more often in a specific type of food. My banes of my guts existence are gluten, mainly wheat, and carrageenen, which is HIGHLY gut inflammatory, and is in MANY dairy products.

Veronica Avatar

Thanks, Nancy, it is good to hear that encouragement because it is somewhat sad to realize I’ve had to eliminate a lot of stuff I really loved – even healthy stuff like broccoli and onions. Who knew salads could be bad for you? I actually did give up gluten for a bit a few years back and didn’t see a huge difference, so if it is IBS, I’m on the more fortunate, milder side of the spectrum where wheat is concerned. I’m still trying to cut down on the amount of carbs I eat just in case, but I’m a bread girl, so that’s been my biggest challenge thus far.

Meghan Avatar

Haul: Bite Beauty GTA, Thistle, and the Becca x Jaclyn Hill face palette 🙂
Weekend plans: My husband is out of town so my mom and I are having a girls weekend at my house! Plus I’ll need to do some homework, boo 😐
Do you have any goals you’re working on?: A master’s degree! Hence the homework, haha

Ana D Avatar

My first Free for haul friday!
Haul: Bought a few of the Urban Decay Vice Lippies that I hope to wear
Weekend Plans? Get over a flu in 100+ degree weather in LA…while wearing said UD lippies. If im gonna be sick, I have to sport a bold lip.
Goals? Definitely clean out some of my make up collection. There are some things I don’t think I’ll ever use.

P.S. Weekly Mellan photos make my day 🙂

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

Haul: Not much. I received a back order of IT powder foundation compacts with a new brush. They are great for light, quick foundation in the summer. Still waiting for my Balm Color Correcting compact from Haute Look. Worth the wait bc of the great price. I’ve been looking at other items but purchased a new phone and changed providers instead.
Weekend: I’m in greater Cleveland. Anything else is anticlimactic after the basketball championship. SSDD from there.

Susan Dowman-Nevling Avatar

I ordered the powder foundation from QVC. It comes with 2 compacts and an IT foundation brush. It’s. A deanse flat ended brush with fluffy soft bristles at the ends. I don’t think it has a number.

Hello gorgeous Mellan!!

Haul: Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant Look In A Palette

Weekend Plans: I’m spending a few weeks in my hometown in Canada, so this weekend’s plans are to plant annuals and perennials with my mom around my her property, and visit with my husband’s family, who live just a few blocks away.

Mini goals: I need to get more sleep on a more regular basis (I’m a night owl), and turning off the technology earlier is part of the plan to get to bed earlier. I have a growing number of books that I’d like to read, so need to make that a higher priority in my schedule.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Haul: Some REN products (cleanser, serum, moisturizer); Korres Wild Rose Brightening Moisturizer and Exfoliating Cleanser set; UD lipstick in Double Team; Josie Maran body butter; the Sephora Play box; and the Sephora Laura Mercier 500pt reward.

Weekend plans: I’ll be searching online for the safest car seat/stroller combo and some other baby items. I just took my daughter shopping for other necessities yesterday — bottles, Baby Magic, baby towels, onesies, etc.

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: Right now, I’m mostly focused on making sure my daughter has everything she needs for the baby, and trying to mentally prepare my anxious, ASD son for college.

kjh Avatar

Haul: one arrived. 2 to go. MUG: 3 blushes. They are so muted. Surprised me. Typhoon, graphite; went by T’s ratings. Ulta should be here today w/ gel eyeliners (thanks again to whomever turned me on to these,) 4 loaded bolds, 2 Nyx Ombre blushes, and both Garnier micellar removers. Like those sales. What I don’t like is that MUG doubled my order for product, though they only sent me one Z., thank god. They are going back, whether it is their policy or not. Not my fault. Quite sure they will not refund my money, and I will be done with Nick, Marlena, et al. Not the most scrupulous bunch. Very excited about ZOEVA, but not holding breath on delivery.
Plans: next week might have some. Got cut at night job, and managed to get back Mon and get rid of fri, bec the very short commute home is an hour on summer fris. I haven’t had any w/e off on pushing 5 years, so fri night off sounds very exciting. Only day job. Rah! Goals: too many to list.

Alecto Avatar

Haul: Sephora Diamond Eyeliners in Canary and Iced Out: also Besame French Vanilla translucent powder.

Weekend plans: Multitudes of minor tasks around the house, though I might go in to work tomorrow (haven’t decided — it’s either that or a couple 14-hour days next week); if I don’t go in to work tomorrow, I’ll likely do some gardening. Your mention of a meal plan makes me want to do that now. 😐

Do you have any goals you’re working on?: Making walking a habit rather than an occasional desperate stress-reliever. Drawing more. Trashing, donating, or gifting everything in this house that I don’t really want or need.

Alecto Avatar

Even though it’s not beauty-related, I wanted to share that I’m getting ready to haul (today!) a semi-custom leather messenger bag to replace my canvas one that’s falling apart and unrepairable. It’s expensive, but I plan on having it for the rest of my life, so I’m comfortable with the decision.

Alecto Avatar

I like the scent, which is rare, as I prefer my products unscented. I haven’t used it all over my face, just in the under-eye area, but I find it to be super silky, with a very nice smoothing and brightening affect.
