Hope the mattes have improved. Are you thinking of getting/ reviewing the MUG pencils? Haven’t even googled reviews of them. Default position=wait for you! As we all do, with great thanks.

Indeed, I can’t find a decent (non-sponsored) review anywhere. I mean, of course you’re going to like the pencils if you get them for free or have affiliate links. Some of the colours look really poor and I am anxious to know what you think about it!

This collection falls mostly flat for me and it could just be a function of how they all look together as a group ( I actually grimaced ) rather than how they would look individually. I think that first glance biased me when in reality my eye should be evaluating as singles. I would definitely want to see them in action Super crappy dusty mattes from previous release (even with primer) have me ultra cautious: they have a tendency to disappear in the blink of an eye…literally. If the performance in there, I may cherry pick a few shades.

The discount for getting a bundle is pretty much nothing, not even 10% lol, so I just stuck to buying a few individuals! I got Chit Chat, Pillow Talk and Rebel :). Those three stood out the most to me, AND I think Chit Chat looks like a decent dupe for Nar’s Pool Shark!

i saw marlena’s video… the way she double and triple scrubbed her finger in the pan just for color payoff… also constantly blowing on her hand and then doubling the swatch made me take pause.

finally, at the end, the swatches were pretty dreadful. i think that they are not worth the 6 bucks and dealing with the bs that is makeup geek. i’ll stick to brands known to more than just youtube.

i’m stoked to see your review! i honestly believe that MUG needs to be knocked down off their high horse.

Sabrina S Avatar

That’s unfortunate that you feel that way! I’ve tried a bunch of their shadows and had no issues with any of them. I know there were issues with her glitters, but what other issues were there? I don’t think they’ve had enough problems to say they need to be knocked down from their high horse.

I agree though, the previous new mattes had very poor colour payoff. Also, I got some of the original matte shades and am constantly annoyed at how powdery they are, the lack of pigmentation and so on. FYI – I only started to buy MUG in November 2015 when they were available via beautybay. And this is not the only thing. The sparklers don’t have decent packaging and were released in a hurry.

In the latest video for the 18 new shades I had the same sentiment as Elisabeth. I never have to blow my hand or tripple swatch for makeup forever or MAC eyeshadows. Seriously. I cringed so much! And again, some of the mattes seemed to have the poorest color pay-off and were patchy.

I wish Makeup Geek would just slow down with the releases and focus on quality over colour selection and money. They are for sure losing fans right now.

On the other hand, if putting two layers of eye shadow on in the morning is the worst thing that happens to me that day, I’m not going to mind. Especially since they are at least 1/4 the cost of high end shadows, if not even cheaper than that.

There’s always going to be a tradeoff between quality and price, but I still think these are a great *value*

Selina Avatar

I think i’ll wait for the reviews before I decide to get any. Wasn’t impressed with the last batch of shadows they released. Also with MAC lowering their prices as well, these shadows would have to be real good quality and unique shades in order for me to purchase from MUG again.

With all due respect, I’m sort of shocked at all the negativity for something that no one even has their hands on yet. As someone who buys “high end” shadows (urban decay, mac, Kat Von D, ect) I absolutely love MUGs formula on a lot of their pressed shadows. With mattes a lot of the times from any brand they can be a lot less buttery and smooth than shimmers or satins simply because the formula is way different. That being said the mattes I have from MUG are amazing for their 6 dollar price tag. (with the exception of a handful that disappointed me, which is common with most brands I buy. Looking at you right now Too Faced sweet peach eyeshadow palette). As someone who has slightly oily lids though maybe my take on them is different from someone with a different skin type, but I’m just happy I have mattes that don’t crease on my lids at all even after a whole days wear.

For those calling the company out for their “mess ups” I can only assume those are comments on the loose pigments and sparklers being messy. These shadows, however; aren’t loose pigments or glitters like those were. Was I upset about not having the sifters for those? Yes, more than I probably should have been. Are these products gonna have that problem? No.

as for my overall thoughts, definitely didn’t get the bundle because I already have dupes for a lot of these. I hand picked a few of the more unique shades like hot pants and chit chat and when I get them I’ll see how I feel, but I tend to really love their shimmers so I’m not in a negative mindset.

Totally agree. I have always been happy with my MUG purchases. Yes, they’ve had some missteps the past year or so, but they are still a smallish company trying to grow. Like you said, many well-established companies have also had some missteps, but people seem a lot more willing to overlook them.

Dee Avatar

I completely agree with you. Honestly I have been really impressed with MUG. Nowhere else can you get colourful mattes at a decent price and cruelty free. I buy a lot of mid-higher end shadows and I have loved each set I have bought, The only ones that did not impress me was the foiled and that is because I am older so my eyelids don’t look the greatest with a foiled look. I don’t know what people expect and I am not a huge follower and swoon over her. I think they have great products.

Astrild Avatar

I’m with you. Not every MUG product is perfection, like in every other brand, but some of their eyeshadows are really staples for me, even over my high-end ones, so I’m interested on every MUG launch although I’ll wait for the reviews as I do with every brand.

Issues of trust and confidence with MUG isn’t just about the sparklers release. The biggest issue was the release and promotion of the matte shadows in Fall 2015. Many of them had poor pigmentation while the Youtube video of swatches Marlena made to promote the shadows grossly misrepresented them. The swatches she made looked fantastic, probably because she swatched them wet to compensate for the poor color payoff. While if you looked at reviews here and elsewhere, the typical method swatches were VERY different. Many fans felt lied to and deceived by the very face of the company! For some, that’s hard to forgive.

With the sparklers, MUG claimed they were intense and didn’t need primer, originally. Then on the promo video, the swatches for them were “forgotten.” I’m sorry, I don’t buy for a second that MUG is dumb enough to make a promo video and “forgot” swatches of their much-hyped product. The last release of pigments also were put on the market with faulty packaging that cracked when people put the lids on. That being said, it looks like MUG did change the info about primers quickly when called out. I’m hoping they just had some bad judgment calls, learned their lesson, and will get the their practices back on track.

For the record, I have bought and love MUG blushes, so I’m not a MUG hater. However, I have also bought several of their eyeshadows, and I found the quality to be terrible on most of them. To MUG’s credit, customer service was awesome, and on my last order they gave me a refund. The mattes and lighter shades I’ve bought were hard-packed, dry, and had terrible pigmentation. The foiled shade I bought, Charmed, was beautiful and had amazing color payoff, but was terribly dry. It arrived shattered. I pressed what I could back in the pan, but it was a PITA to use. Bitten was the best shade I’ve gotten, and I would call that “good, but not anything special.” They may have some amazing shadows in their range, but I gave up on finding them.

I already bought a couple based on the youtube video MUG put up! Makeup Geek is my favorite brand for staples and for their pigments. I use my neutral matte MUG eyeshadows all the time!! I bought Tuscan Sun, Tiki Hut, and Wild West 😀

Pearl Avatar

The shimmers looked decent and I’m probably going to get a few but will wait for the reviews on the mattes – when I watched the video, she had to really press and rub her fingers for the mattes and the payoff looked a little dusty. I probably have dupes for the mattes so if the quality isn’t that, I’ll just stick to getting the shimmers.

I don’t understand all the hate on MG’s shadows. I have about 20 of them that work very nicely for me. I ordered a few of these to try. The only issue I’ve ever had with this line (eyeshadows) is that the color upon arrival looks like a slightly different color than what I was expecting from its online color representation. To each her own, I guess.

Juliieeeeee Avatar

Never been a fan of MUG shadows. I purchased 9 shadows and felt they were decently pigmented but hard to blend as they all sort of muddled together. Never had this problem with UD or MAC. Now that MAC has lowered their prices I might just stop ordering from MUG especially since these shades from Spring do nothing for me.

Bonnie Avatar

I almost pulled the trigger and bought a handful of these last night…but then I remembered how I had so wished I’d waited on your reviews last time instead of being impulsive! So my favorites may sell out before they’re reviewed (I really want Chit chat especially!!!) but if they get terrible grades then it won’t have mattered!

sarah Avatar

i dont like her line the mattes are patchy and the shimmers go away unless you have a color base on it. please do a mac dupe list since i love mac which her shadows are worst eyeshadows i ever tried, profusion shadows are better then her line
