If you were to design a makeup room, what would it look like?

If you were to design a makeup room, what would it look like? Share!

It’d be a large room with sliding glass doors to let a lot of natural light in but with lush curtains that could black out the light if it was too much (and also to keep the room cooler during hotter months!). There would be one large wall with glossy black, floating shelves for displaying various favorites and pieces, and on the opposite wall would be makeup storage dressers. The remaining wall would have a long vanity with a large mirror. And then a bathroom en suite for my sink!

A whole room???
Then again…at this rate I may need a makeup room eventually! JK!
A nice sturdy vanity with a soft, comfy chair is a MUST to start with! My makeup mirror on it of course. And it should have side drawers on at least one side to store my everyday staples and faves. A window with diffused sunlight helps a lot! But like you, a blackout curtain is a must-have living in very sunny regions like these. A matching storage chest would be essential. The color scheme for the room would be purple and teal!
Love your idea of a sink!!!

I’ve never actually thought about a whole room, just like a desk set up so this is all on the fly.

Of course lots of natural light, with shades/curtains for the too-bright days. Also maybe some skylight sort of situation as then the light gets in during all parts of the day (also with a shade for that). En suite bath for sink and such, or, as I experience in a dorm room that was housed in an old girls finishing school, just a sink/mirror/cabinet in the room with a bit of tiling around that. One main vanity/seating area with a big mirror with some built in lighting in addition to the usual smaller light up mirror, with one drawer under the surface for everyday favorites. Drawers on either side of the vanity for categories of items, and floating shelves above them for decor. On either side of that, some enclosed cabinets with glass fronts that could do the clear/frosted shift depending on if the items could handle sun (and enclosed because I hate dusting!).

Opposite that, a sofa and coffee table, maybe with a chair on either side, so if I had makeup-junkie company we could all hang out. I can’t see using more than one or maybe two sides of the room for makeup so I think a large organized closet system for my clothes/accessories/etc taking up one wall (think California Closets…) so the room itself could be a great all-in-one get ready area. Which makes me actually think a full en suite bath would be a good idea. Maybe connecting the bedroom through the bathroom (and another door just leading out so I didn’t re-humidify after getting dressed). A good sound system that also wouldn’t annoy the neighbors. Some great art on the walls. The vanity table should be large enough to place a laptop on it but far enough away from makeup being applied so it wouldn’t get powder in it in case I wanted to watch a tutorial and try it as I watched. A good cat bed for my cat (though I suspect he’d just take over the couch). Some nice potted plants (living, not fake) for ambiance and that “green” smell you get around living things. I’m going to have to save this for future reference and keep thinking!

Yes to a skylight and great sound system!!! I forgot about those two essentials, because a skylight gives lots of natural but diffused lighting without any added heat ( we have frosted glass ones here in AZ ). And I gotta have my music while I work my magic!!!

Yeah, I grew up for a time in a house that had some skylights and it made a HUGE difference in terms of light and just overall feel for a place. I miss having them! Hopefully some day I’ll end up in a place that has some again.

I hear that! There were two in the very first apt. I moved into after my kids had both moved out. It was probably the only thing I really loved about that place!!!

The whole idea of a makeup room is so foreign to me but I know a lot of people (women, mainly) seem to have them now. To me, it would be like having a “golf room” or a “shoe room” and just kind of silly, unless I were in the business – a makeup artist, for example, having people come to my home studio to have their makeup done. I’d just be happier with a better bathroom vanity (more storage) in my own bathroom (and we’ve purchased the new vanity, sink, etc. – now it’s just a matter of finding the time to put them in).

I can’t even imagine having my own makeup room! I think I’d just like a really nice vanity in my room, placed in a spot with lots of soft, natural light and a large mirror. It would have those mirror lights around it and I would make sure they imitated natural light as best I could. The vanity would have lots of storage drawers with organizational inserts, and a desktop organizer for my everyday items.

Ah – large room, floor to ceiling windows, south facing. Near the windows I would want a small sofa & a chair or two, and plants everywhere, on the floor and suspended at different heights from the ceiling. My husband calls our living room “the jungle”, so plants are a non-negotiable, for ambiance and fresher air. On the other side of the room, my vanity – huge mirror with lights all around it in case of clouds or evening hours, and lots of drawers with built in organizers for lipsticks and other items in tubes, separate compartments for bottles, and for compacts. That way I don’t have to keep a ton of stuff on top of the vanity but can keep it neat looking. This room would be off my very large private bathroom with a separate shower, whirlpool and fireplace. A sound system goes without saying – with built in speakers that take up no room otherwise. (We’re dreaming here, right? Might as well go all the way.) I’d also like a mini fridge & small bar somewhere – maybe next door in my dressing room – well stocked with water and juices – and ice! Plus an espresso maker – ideal for getting ready in the morning.

I would have a selection of vanity cupboards to house different makeup items: eye shadow palettes, foundations, blushes, powders, lipsticks and nail polishes. I would also have a cupboard to house my bath and body products. Like you Christine, I would have a lovely window with a block out curtain for the summer months. The room would contain a sink as well. It would be painted in a light taupe colour with matching tiles. We can only dream…

Jaclyn Hill the luck braud, has a whole work room to herself.

Myself, I would love to have a full wall of large bay windows to allow natural light in (a skylight would be nice).
But a room large enough to have a working station to work on manual projects. A seperate station for filming and computer editing, and a vantity are sore storage and playing.

Great ideas, ladies. Don’t forget that some product needs a refrigerator. And the sink is mandatory. Washing your hands is as mandatory for m/u as for handling raw chicken. I think I wash between each different product, and I’m hardly OCD. Just don’t want to cross-contaminate. Good climate control & maybe variable shades to allow differing light levels & full light block.. Full length mirror as well as vanity mirror, to check look with outfit. Don’t know why, but I want some kind of variable scent gizmo, too. At least one comfortable chair. And a table/desktop computer for tutorials. That’s in addition to your great ideas.

Dark hardwood floors, white walls, a large window facing North or East, a long vanity with a chair (my grandma had an amazing mid-century vanity with a red granite counter… how I wish I had had the space to take it when she left us), and an entire wall of storage: dressers, and floating shelves above.

I would have tons of Windows facing south and either east or west, also a way to tone down to much natural light. I want a ceiling fan, pale warm or white neutral walls. Plenty of storage drawers with clear fronts. A no trespassing sign. Good sound system. Small fridge for water and to cool certain products. A lounge chairs plus a long vanity and bench. Drawers under the vanity for various makeup and hairbrushes. Maybe a display shelf or two and a beautiful large picture. Plenty of electrical outlets and someone else to clean it. Also a light patterned rug, stain resistant. I currently have white Berber, not good, shows everything. If I keep writing, I will think of more. Oh, good, natural artificial light for after dark-hello Northern Ohio..

Ok, after reading all the others, I currently have a.full bath next to my make up, filing room. It would be great to have a sink in the corner of the room. “If wishes were horses….”

A whole room for makeup only?

I guess it would be a smaller room, like a kids bedroom in size with a custom vanity wall where the whole thing was a table top with a mirror behind it. A nice wall of windows and perfect lighting. The wall on the opposite side would be nothing but storage on the bottom, the same height as the floating vanity top on the other wall with a white wall above. Of course I’d need something to play music with but small and chic of course.

I’d want this time of set up so all my current favorites could be on the vanity, with my favorite most used speciality items on the top of the storage, and all my very occasional or archived/collected pieces in the storage to be rotated out to admire.

Nice bright and clean, my make up table would have a drawer in the center and drawers down the sides with a few different mirrors! And a nice spot to put my camera for filming. The colors would be neutral and nice and bright! but also very cozy!
