How many products should be in a seasonal collection?

15-25, I think. I like enough variety so that multiple skin tones can benefit while not getting overwhelmed by a collection’s size.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Maybe 5-15. Maybe 2 lipsticks, 2 glosses, 2 shadow kits or 3 single shadows, 1-2 blushes, 2 nail polishes. I think too many products can overwhelm the consumer and quality/creativity can suffer (hello MAC!) . But a well-edited and well-thought out collection is much better. I actually liked Chanel’s Fall 2015 collection (Blue Rhythm) , which was small, but well done, and the colors and theme were very cohesive.

I would like to see:
5-6 lipsticks
4-5 cheek products (blush, highlighter, etc.)
2 eyeshadow quads or quints, MINIMUM.
Or 5-6 eyeshadow singles instead.
And NAIL POLISH, too!!
3-4 nail goodies
But a few more of everything would be a welcomed offering, too! And definitely in a diverse enough range of shades so everyone can enjoy it!

For low-to-mid end items, I’d say 20-25 pieces covers a good range. For the very high end, I prefer them to be intimately small (10-15 items), even if it means having to bypass the collection because it doesn’t work for me. A small, well chosen collection delivers a sense of exclusivity and sophistication.

I was drawing a blank on this question, then I read your answer and was like “yes, this is what I think”. I feel like, especially since the high end brands are going to be expensive, having fewer items is better as people don’t have to choose which item they will pass over, whereas with a cheaper brand you can generally afford to buy a handful of items if you really love them. That way the items in luxury collections can go individually on Christmas/Birthday/etc lists or people can justify the splurge on an item or two. I find when high end collections are too big I just pass them over entirely so I don’t end up with buyers remorse for getting X item over Y item. Having more exclusive, tailored small collections actually might make it more likely for people to buy them.

Around 10 would be ideal for me. My perfect seasonal collection would be a small curated selection of products around a strong theme: I prefer fewer products but well picked ones than a very large assortment of things that were just thrown together for no particular reason.

I miss the days when Jeannine Lobell was boss at Stila and did two collections twice a year–three shadows, three blushes, and three lipsticks, and the MAs would show you how to work them with what you had. There are so many collections so often now that they’re all just duplicating each other.

2 quads, one neutral to warm and one neutral to cool. 2 to 4 single shadows. 2 eye liners/shadowsticks. 2 to 4 nail polishes. 2 blushes, 4 to 6 lip products, and an LE really special piece that’s a highlighter, powder, bronzer, blush, or larger palette. I feel an occasional colored mascara or skin care product might be fun too. I like Chanel’s seasonal releases because they have variety and often very sophisticated colors that feel seasonal but wearable all year.

I think between 15- 25
5 lipstick shades
2 glosses
2 eye shadow palettes – one warm toned, one cool toned
1-2 blushes
2 powders
A range of foundations to suit all skin types
2-3 nail polishes.
Any more than that and it gets overwhelming. 3-4 collections per year is ample.

I’ve been thinking about this question off and on all day. I’ve never really thought about how large a holiday collection should be, but I know what (IMO) it shouldn’t be. Last year’s Buxom collection was overwhelming. They released so many gift sets it was hard to keep up. The only easy pick (for me) was the huge lipgloss collection (Roulette?). I grabbed that and left the rest behind.
