Going Luxe:  Cle de Peau Satin Eye Color

Cle de Peau Satin Eye Color ($45.00 for 0.07 oz.) is the ultimate luxury in eyeshadow.  It’s absolutely fantastic eyeshadow–soft, smooth; it applies like butter and feels like silk.  At $642 per ounce–and to put that into perspective, MAC is $290/oz., NARS is $328/oz., Chanel is $407/oz.–it’s the most expensive eyeshadow I’ve ever tested.  (But I got curious, so I did some research, and La Prairie’s Eyeshadow comes in at $900/oz. and Sisley at $920/oz., so it’s not the priciest one out there…)

Knowing that it’s Cle de Peau, a luxury line, there’s a sense of, “Mmm, ahh, ohh!” from the get-go, which is part of the experience of using high-end or luxury brands.  When I did the math, however, even I had to go,“Whoa!”  I’m going to tell you point blank that I don’t think I’d ever fork over $45 for a single eyeshadow myself (of course, if it was antique gold, maybe we could talk, if my wallet didn’t run away).  But this is something that has to be put into perspective.  I would have (and I have) paid $45 or more for a lipstick (Guerlain) or lipgloss (Cle de Peau!) that I really liked.  I also want to say that Cle de Peau is a luxury brand, so their business is not built on being affordable.  The price tag very much reflects that.

So, putting price aside, the eyeshadow formula does not disappoint.  I tried two shades:  #101, which is a shimmering warmed-up white, and #107, which is a softened plum-mauve with a shimmery finish. Both shades swatched very true-to-color, and the shimmer is softened a bit (almost like a diffused glow) but on the frostier side.  The best way to describe these is exactly as I said earlier:  “it applies like butter and feels like silk.” The two shades I tried were well-pigmented and shimmered in their loveliness.

These also adhere very well to the lids, whether or not you use a base.  Typically, I don’t bother trying out eyeshadows without a base, since wearing an eyeshadow base is nearly a must-do when you wear eyeshadow, period.  However, because Cle de Peau advertises that it can be applied without “fading, creasing, or dulling,” I had to give it a shot.  The eyeshadows have “Hydro-wrap Complex” and Argan Tree Oil for “smooth application and wear.”  Fancy talk, but these do wear well as an all over color and no base, so count me surprised.  They didn’t soften, crease, or fade during the eight hours I wore them to test (and yes, I totally wore #101 on one eye and #107 on the other!).

They are truly lovely and beautiful from start to finish, even if they are jaw-dropping-ly expensive.  I can easily see why someone would purchase these, even if I myself can’t quite afford them!

Has anyone else tried these?  Anyone caved on these?  Must-see shades?

There are also eight other shades in the formula: 102 (smoked, gray-purple), 103 (nude), 104 (peach), 105 (pinked-peach), 106 (subdued brown-pink), 108 (purple amethyst), 109 (medium green), and 110 (soft sky blue).

Recommendation: For the ultimate indulgence in eyeshadow, there’s Cle de Peau. I would indulge only if it was a product I could see myself using regularly and finishing.

I love that you mentioned you wore a different colour on each eye. Hahaha. I hope you didn’t go out in public and get too many weird looks! 🙂

Wow – that’s quite impressive. I would have to find a shade that I didn’t already have in my stash before I would consider dropping $45 on a single shadow. And i thought $29 was a lot when I bought an Edward Bess single shadow at Bergdorf’s. I’m interested in the peach, however!

LOL 45 for an eyeshadow. I feel like I should stand at that counter and
find someone who buys these… And have them help me out with my student loans.

107 is gorgeous. I have not purchased a CdP shadow before. I didn’t want to pay for something so pricey without knowing anything of the quality. I am willing to give it a whirl, thanks to this review. I don’t have a massive stash but it is very well edited and everything I have works for me. I don’t feel guilty buying something so pricey if it fits well into my collex.

I KNEW there would be someone just like you reading! 🙂 Like I’m a lip girl, EVEN if I do bold eyes, and I’ll spend a pretty penny on a lip product over an eye product — so I just had a feeling there’d be someone on the other side 😀

I just started to become a lip girl. I am really loving building a library of lip products. Your series on lip products have been helping a lot. I can’t wait until the summer brights! I’ll spend some pretty pennies, but they are always well executed expenditures. I think my lack of spontaneous purchases is the only thing that saves me.

I love that #107, but I would not be able to fork out that much money for a single eyeshadow…and my weakness is e/s!!! =D

Christine are there any dupes out there that you can think of???

Seriously, I just can’t see how such a high price for an eyeshadow can be justified…thankfully I’m perfectly happy with my MAC and NARS eyeshadows and feel no need whatsoever for these.

Evelyn Avatar

I wish I hadn’t seen them because they look so pretty, just what I like! My wallet however has just run out the door screaming.

Frances Avatar

On the back of a milk carton : ‘Have you seen this wallet? Answers to the name of Rupert, last seen running away screaming ‘Not the Christmas season!!! No more palettes!!’

Those CdP eye shadows are beeyootiful. And I can vouch for Sisley’s eye shadows. And their eyeliners. Heart-stoppingly expensive, definitely not worth it, massively over-priced, I will totally buy them again. The heart wants what it wants and in this case, it wants the shiny!

I think luxury eyeshadows are such a waste of money. I don’t think the price tag can ever be justified, you’re basically throwing money in the trash!

#107 is really pretty! since you gave it such a great review I might purchase it. I have one of their Silky Lipsticks and since I spent $50 on the lipstick spending $45 on their eye-shadow should be fine 🙂

I should get good use since I don’t own many shadows anyway, and I am the type that wears the colors I like the most almost daily.

Congratulations for the bravery of wearing different colours on different eyelids! I laughed a lot 😀
Well, I don’t like the colours you have swatches, but I am going to spend my 2cents about luxury eyeshadows.
I’ve tried Chanel, Lancome, Dior, Guerlain… many others. I love eyeshadows so when I buy, I buy eyeshadows (from what I’ve understood, you are more a lipstick lover). But the truth is: none of the previous has worth the price.
The best eyeshadows I’ve ever tried are by an Italian brand which sells each at 3€ (comparison: MAC single 17€, Dior quintet 45€, Chanel Noirs Obscures 48€) (yes, here in Italy make up is incredibly expensive!) that is nothing. They have tons of colours and they also do sales!!! (eyeshadow at 2€ ^^ ) However, their quality is fantastic (I’ve also asked myself “How it is possible they have such a quality with such a price???”).
At the second position, I would put MAC and Clarins for texture, colours, feeling, duration, everything.
Maybe, Dior and the other “luxury” brand are at the bottom of my list. Why? I don’t know but when I buy an eyeshadow, especially when I spend so much, I want to actually SEE the colour on my lid. Am I weird? Maybe.
However, just to say that in my experience, rarely price means quality, just this!
Looking for your next swatch! 🙂
Vale

The thing i find funny is the packaging doesn`t look that high end at all. In my experence most high end shadows don`t have sponges with them.

Laura Avatar

I was just tinking of brands like mac, nars, make up forever, urban decay, or bobbi brown have no brush or sponge. But my revlon, avon, and mayballine do have them.
