I can’t think of a makeup look (it all washes off is my motto! and from someone who wears different eye makeup on each eye and leaves the house… well, you know!), but I love the look of non-traditional hair dye but I can’t imagine it looking good on me. (I’m also not at all committed to the upkeep.)
Thanks to Rachel for today’s questions! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
Dark lips. I am so fair it just never looks good on me! love ya T! Super dark eye makeup also looks awful but I keep trying.
Red lips hands down. It looks soooo cool, but I cannot bear even a thought of having a “look at me” statement on my face.
Same! I have Ruby Woo but never wear it
haha, I do what I want! There’s never been anything I wanted to try that I didn’t do at least once.
I love the really polished bold looks, like the look for MAC Le Disko or like the Tom Ford collections, but I feel like on me bold=dark and then I look a bit gothy. I’d love to be able to pull off the polished editorial looks, but I feel like it would take so much product and I’d be too self conscious.
Same! I want to try a really bright hair color on me but with a natural dark brown its going to be a pain getting anything to show on me! All that bleach makes me cringe!
My hair is quite a dark brown (my eyebrows are straight-up black, to give an idea), but I used the L’Oreal Feria Copper Shimmer C74 on it and got great results. I was dyeing over an inch of roots and a different dye job from around 3 months ago, but it came out extremely smooth and even. It’s a very bright copper but still quite sophisticated and plausible looking. I’m extremely happy with this product, though, the box contents were a little alarming. It comes with not only _three_ things to add to the developer tube (vs usually one or maybe two tops), one of which is a BRIGHT safety shock orange color, but I pressed on, and my resulting hair is a really great new-penny color. The dye also comes with a shampoo to use twice after the colouring, and ALSO conditioner, because the dye is so enthusiastic that they warn otherwise it’ll get all over yr towels when you dry off… industrial grade! That said, I have quite sensitive skin and a lot of allergies, and it didn’t bother me. And no bleach needed! Definitely a good line to look into if you want an easy change to something with some oomph. If suicide ginger doesn’t appeal they had several other natural shades and some unnatural ones like Power Plum.
L’oreal also has a L’oreal Excellence Hi-Color range of reds that are really bright, and designed for dark hair. No separate bleaching needed. I usually go with Red Hot, but I did Magenta for the summer. (I used Magenta right on top of the old Red Hot.) They do bleed a lot the first few washes, is the only downside. I like to use a sealant on my hair with these. I don’t get much fading. I still use color protecting and red hair hair products to help it.
Probably a full smoky cat eye, with kohl waterline, and false eyelashes. With my oily lids and wet waterline, I have this nightmare, I’m going to end up with 2 giant black panda eyes, and there will be a false lash hanging loose LOL
Non-traditional lipstick colors like BLUE! Hey, I am no spring chicken here @ 56, so yeah, I think that would just be too OTT! I do wear purple though, bright purple at that: ColourPop Grind, Maybelline Lavender Voltage. And I also push the proverbial envelope wearing MAC VG Rihanna ll. But “nope” to blue, teal, green or black because these would look ridiculous on me at my age, although “yes” to blue if I were 20 years or so younger!
Speaking of non-traditional hair dye, it really is a huge PITA to keep up with, I was doing mine a purplish plum-black 3- 2 1/2 yrs. back, the upkeep was TOO much!
Definitely dark lips. Like “Dark Purple.” Think for example, Cyber. I love it so much on me, but living in a society that doesn’t really wear that much lipstick makes me different from the rest whenever I try to wear it! 🙁 sad..
probably more colorful and risky looks (mama loves her neutrals but always neutrals is like playing on the safe side) and i would like to do bolder looks without being called out… ex when i use blue or pink mascara people sometimes calls me out on it and not always is a good comment that i recieve. sometimes it becomes an issue. in a way it gives me anxiety… i’m trying to be brave and risk it if i like my look, it washes off so yeah… … .. . .. . as well i think about the hair dye but my complexion is non friendly for colorful hair, i think those looks are things only a few can do.
A super slick heavy cat eye!
I can’t really think of anything. I don’t like things like black or green lips or red eyeshadow so I don’t try them, not because I’m fearful but just because I think they’re ugly. I suppose the only thing might be a really dark smoky eye but I’m 60 and wear glasses (I hate my contacts!) so a really dark smoky eye just doesn’t suit me all that well.
I wasn’t sure about red eyeshadow, but was given a pan of MAC Passionate and it is absolutely gorgeous. The cranberry shade in Dior’s Trafalgar quint also looks great. But, I got a red NYX shadow with gold shimmer, and it just made me look like I had hay fever… so as with any color, some’s flattering, some’s not.
A really dark smoky eye.
Black/blue/green lipstick! I wear very dark/neon/greyish/all kind of unusual lipstick colours all the time, but I still don’t have enough courage to wear those really “controversial” colours, but I’m sure I’ll find that courage someday! 🙂
I’ve always wanted to do black or dark blue lipstick. But, I can’t I can’t figure out the way to wear the rest of my face without it looking ridiiculous.
I really like the look of a very dark heavy smokey eye, but I feel like it closes my eyes so I never do it.
Black lipstick and a pink wig. Dark eyeshadow up to my eyebrows. John Galliano Fall 2009 makeup everyday. Gold eyeshadow everywhere. Dark red blush. If it wasn’t for the fact that people stare and are nasty, I’d go out everyday looking like a literal clown, because I’m crazy but sadly not crazy enough to actually do it.
Cool toned, colorful eyeshadows… I feel like having blue eyes make it difficult for me to wear cool-toned blues, greens, purples etc. I would love to have a different hair color as well, but god, the upkeep. I don’t even brush my hair regularly (curly-haired girls unite), let alone upkeeping every 6 weeks on roots/fading.
I really want to wear something super editorial and colorful, kind of like looks where one or two colors is very softly blended REALLY far around the eyes and there is lots of glitter. But basically you can’t walk around like that in real life. And as someone with similar undertones to yours, but just a couple shades lighter, I can attest that if I go too cool with my hair color — blues and purples, which are my favorites — it makes my skin look a bit Simpsons-esque.
I’ve often thought about tinting my grey streaks powder blue but I keep thinking how silly it would look on a woman my age. But, who knows. Never say never 🙂
Ooh, that would be really pretty. Dame Helen Mirren had pink hair for awhile (not too long ago), so you’re never too old. 🙂
There are very few looks I’m afraid to try at least once. I’m far more likely not to have the skill necessary to pull off certain looks. My eyeliner skills are not the best, for instance, so while I have the desire to try looks involving winged or cat-eye liner, I need a whole lot more practice before I’d feel comfortable leaving the house like that – I can’t seem to get my eyes even, and when I do, it ends up transferring onto other parts of my eyes and I have to start all over!
I suppose the last frontier for me (other than looks that are beyond my skill level) is non-traditionally colored lipsticks. Brights, darks, and reds are not a problem, but I haven’t mustered the courage to wear anything more off the wall than purples and certain shades of orange. Teal, blue, green, silver, etc intimidate me for some reason.
I will wear basically any color, irrespective of finish, on my eyes. Anything from matte neutrals to darks to brights to shimmery glitterbombs are all right with me. Color mascara or funky shades of eyeliner? Not a problem. Even yellows and blues don’t faze me. I just can’t seem to get to this level when it comes to my lips!
I feel like dark lipsticks, including reds, really age me, so I try to avoid them. I’ve also stayed away from false eyelashes because I’m afraid they will make me look overly made up, and very few women around me even wear noticeable makeup on a regular basis.
Contouring, actually. I dust the cool-toned bronzer along the hollows of my cheeks but that’s it really. But I would also love to pull off a polished but gothy look with bold eyes and dark lips, I just have no idea how as of now…
There’s not much I don’t wear out! I wear bright and dark lips, rainbow liner, bright under eyes… I think the one thing I won’t wear out (and by this I mean to work… always at work if I’m not at home ha!) is a colored contour (think blue or purple for a contour color) or an atypical eyeshadow shape, like blue by the corners of the brows and whatnot.
Unconventional lipstick, like blue, green… I love the look of some but I’d be afraid to leave the house wearing something like that.
Definitely a look with jewels, embellishments or something decorative added to my face. Also want to try really full false lashes. I’m allergic to adhesive and latex, so I never wear anything that needs be applied with “glue”.
I’m not really afraid of trying any style, more like I haven’t leveled up in skill to be able to do them myself. Also some (like really dark lips) I’m gonna need to practice a bit in terms of making sure there are no makeup mishaps.
Dark or red lips to work. I’m a cashier (not my chosen career, but you do what you have to) and there aren’t stipulations saying I can’t wear bright or dark lip colours – I’m just afraid to LOL. I love them and have quite a collection of bold lipsticks that I’m working up to wearing out of the house. Latest bright colour was Mac Hello Kitty Big Bow. That’s as brave as I get at the moment.
I always thought the full-on hard-core goth looks — really white face, graphic black or bright makeup, shaved eyebrows with cool designs drawn in instead — look really fabulous, arty and interesting. Because I’m not a full on goth, and wasn’t even when young, I would feel like a poser and like I were insulting goth culture if I went for it. I incorporate goth makeup colors and styles into my own style, instead. I think I’ll always have goth influences in my dress, makeup, and likes.
Other than that, makeup washes off, and hair grows out, so I do it. Thanks for using my question.
Rachel, I wrote you a comment, but it somehow landed on Smidge’s comment below. I do not know what happened exactly…but yeah, it’s under her name?
Cool toned eyeshadows! I can pull off forest or olive greens, but that’s about as cool as I’m willing to go. I’m considering trying a royal blue, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. 99% of my eyeshadows are strictly warm toned. Light blues or aquas look terrible on me.
I also LOVE the look of winged eyeliner on other people, but it makes my eyes look very close set and small, so I never ever wear it.
Eyeliner – whenever I use it underneath my lower lashes, it just looks like I have panda eyes.
I’ve always wanted to try the 40’s look – heavy liner, red lips, porcelain skin, defined brows. I just don’t have the nerve, and when I try it at home, I just wind up looking like Bette Davis as Baby Jane.
I’d love to see you with a streak of teal to match your eyeliner! Maybe a clip-in weft you can braid in at one spot and remove at the end of the day. 😀
I feel exactly as you do about going full-on Goth now. Although I do still go right to the edge simply because when I was a teen and throughout most of my 20’s, I really was quite into the darker punk that actually in fact was Goth: The Cult, Depeche Mode, Patty Smith, Siouxie Sioux, The Cure, etc. ( BTW, I no longer remember how some names are spelled anymore!), and even now, I still love those, as well as some of today’s artists in that vein, like a *few* songs by NIN or TDG, if I’m in that mindset. I did used to do heavy graphic black eye makeup usually with a vivid yellow or ultra bright fuchsia. More tame now, though.
My comment wound up in the wrong place! It was meant for Rachel R! Idk what happened?
BTW; I do love Your idea of a clip-in streak! They look great on very dark, long hair, and they are noncommittal!
I’ve never really known what to call my style. “Eclectic alternative with punk, goth, glamour, and romantic leanings?” “Not preppy?” “Confused?” lol I’m really not sure.
I love that! Yes, “Eclectic Alternative” is the perfect description for those of us who go darker, but not or no longer full-on Goth, but do go for somewhat unconventional or more artsy looks! I think you came up with a new term!
Anything that involves intense contouring. I feel like my face is too oval to really pull it off.
The first one is the pin-up look although I have the most suitable type for it with dark hair, dark eyes and pale skin.
The second one is a smokey eye. I wish I had the lifestyle to try both looks…
Let’s see:
-crazy cut-crease “magazine editorial” eye looks… I just feel it would be too much for my everyday life
-non-conventional lip colors to the streets – black, blue, green
-the Kardiashian type contour-highlight… I mean I feel as if I could not pull that off… but I’m still curious
-crazy color in my hair (I have been contemplating dying all my hair dark blue or violet for years now, and I am always chickening out)
-false lashes – my eyes are really sensitive and reacting really bad to anything that is moving close to them… I would think it would not be worth the effort :D.
Cobalt eyeliner.
Been thinking about it for months, but haven’t pulled the trigger.
