For me, lip liner usually does the trick, or clear lip liner on the outer edge of the lips. Otherwise, wearing something less glossy/emollient or lightly setting with powder.

I use lip liner and use a lip brush to apply the first layer of the lipstick
I begin with a lip pencil (typically something cheap like WnW, as they tend to be less emollient), then apply lipstick in thin layers, always with a brush. A brush can be “inconvenient”, but less so than constantly checking my lipstick, LOL! In between layers, I dust with a bit of powder; this also helps in keeping the color on/uniform much longer. I really only do this with red/vampy shades, so in warmer weather, I just typically go with nude/MLBB shades. Using less emollient products helps, too.
I don’t use Lip Tars…? (insert snarky giggle here) lol
Lipliner and a matte or semi-matte lipstick. At night, I also use retinol products around the outside edges of my lips, it reduces fine lines, which can cause lipsticks to bleed.
Usually just lipliner works for me, too. For really challenging stuff that I love anyway:
1) Exfoliate lips with a sugar scrub.
2) Prime lips. ( I use Eos or Blistex lip balm, or e.l.f. Studio Lip Lock Pencil.)
3) Use a clear or matching lipliner to outline the lips. Clear lipliner can be used around the outside edge of the lips, as well.
4) Apply lip color, but don’t go overly heavy. For liquid lipsticks and lip tars, I use a small amount, starting in the center of my lips and brushing outward. I think a lot people have trouble with these two products because they use way, way too much. For example, lip tars only require a tiny drop to fully cover both lips.
What clear liner do you like? I have the Bite Beauty Line & Define Lip Primer that is supposed to be moisturizing but ALWAYS dries my lips out something awful. I also tried the No Cosmetics No Bleeding Lips and it didn’t work for me.
I use use either Maybelline Color Sensational Lipliner in Clear, UD Ozone or e.l.f. Studio Lip Lock. I’ve heard Milani’s anti-feathering pencil and OCC’s Anti-Feathered pencils are good, but I haven’t tried them myself yet.
I can vouch for the Milani Anti-Feather lipliner but it’s not moisturizing so you’ll have to prime before putting it on. Also something waxy like the Milani pencil changes the texture of your lip product so unless you’re covering all of your lips with the liner, be sure to blend well towards the centre of your mouth!

This is a real problem for me and I use a clear lip liner called No Bleeding Lips that I order from the Sephora site. The MUFE one isn’t bad either.
Absolutely gotta say lipliner! Also, it a lipstick is particularly prone to bleeding, blot it, and while keeping the tissue in place ( one ply, not two) set with translucent HD powder, lightly reapply lipstick.
I took a MAC makeup class with one of their pro artists who showed me to apply a light layer of foundation to my lips then use a clear brow pencil on the outside of my lip line. Then I line and fill in the whole lip with color. Then apply the lipstick. I wear
red lipstick almost everyday and never have a problem.
it just happened to me something like that… i do well with same shade lip liners, or transparent ones.. or in other cases i grab a lip brush and very light handed do the outlining process.
By using lip liner with lipsticks that are bright or that I know tend to have this problem. I also won’t purchase more shades of a lipstick or lipgloss formula if I experienced feathering with one.
I actually had my pretty zombie zombette bleed on me at work yesterday. i made the mistake of not cheeking my lips after i ate. But i find that clear lip liners like elf’s and sephora’s does a great job in preventing bleeding and feathering.
It’s not often a problem but I only own 2 lip liners – Dervish from MAC which is pretty much the colour of my lips and an invisible lip liner from Lise Watier that is absolutely fantastic. I did buy “No More Bleeding Lips” but it’s not nearly as good as the Lise Watier one and it’s much softer and I’d have gone through it very quickly.
Lip liner helps a bit. But I don’t often wear bold colors anyway, so feathering and bleeding is never much of an issue for me.
I ALWAYS line my lips. Not just because of bleeding, but because most colors on my skintone need it.
I try to get lipsticks that don’t have that issue and I love Urban Decays Ozone pencil. The new fat pencil is awesome and so easy and fast.
I’ll use a pencil lip liner (since they’re more dry) if I’m wearing something more glossy, but usually matte/satin lipsticks don’t bleed on me, so I’ll only line to get that precise edge
This is a huge problem for me because I am so heavy handed, with everything!! I find the usual lip liner helps a lot, and really just paying attention to how much I apply.
Lipliner. I was never a smoker, but I loved to whistle and so at 71 I have verticle lip lines. Lipliner does the trick as does using common sense when it comes to how much product I apply. For example, a little bit of gloss makes my lips look fuller and smoother. A heavy coat of gloss eventually migrates (taking some of the lipstick with it) and gives me clown mouth.
Clear lip liner is my favorite! I love UD Ozone.
Now I will say a much bigger issue for me is that my lower lip is full and pouty. When I eat, I get lipstick on my the top of my chin where my lip curls under. I’m used to just blotting manically before eating, but if anybody’s found a way to prevent this, let me know!

Oh my goodness, mine does this too! I have full lips, but the lower lip is more so, and it curls TOO!
I used to use clear lipliner just out side the lip line and it worked great. But on day I ran out and in desperation I tried using Chapstick (the waxy kind) and it worked great! I just let it overlap the lip line a little; I think it “prefills” the wrinkles to keep my lipstick from migrating. And Chapstick is way cheaper than clear lip liner.
I am pretty lazy with a lot of my makeup. I can’t be bothered with all these lip pencils and primers. I am also fortunate in that I’m not prone to lipstick bleeding. So if I have a product that bleeds, it’s getting returned or trashed.
Lip primer, always a lip liner and a light hand
It’s a process, which is probably why I rarely do it. I go around the perimeter of my lips with a concealer, then line my lips with a liner that’s close to the color of the lipstick, apply the lipstick, blot, apply another layer, blot again, then hope for the best.
Exfoliate lips if doing a more matte look (or if they need it anyways), use a lip liner, and sometimes use a lip brush instead of applying straight from the bullet.
I use a lip liner and when I use the Maybelline Colour Sensational lipsticks I don’t have that problem.
If I’m not using liquid lipstick, I prime my lips with a fluffly brush using whatever liquid concealer I have, which is usually L.A. Girl, pencil around the lips, THEN fill in my lips with the pencil, then apply the lipstick.
OR
If you are using liquid lipstick, this is how I get it to stay on all night with little to no re-application. Prime my lips, like I said above, and pencil around the lips. Apply a regular lipstick to the lips that is a similar hue/shade to your liquid lipstick. THEN apply your liquid lipstick over top of the regular lipstick you put on first.
I won’t get that weird crease in the middle of my bottom lip or the loss of color around the insides of my mouth unless I’m eating or drinking. Though, even when eating, very little to no re-application.
I wear gloss mostly. Days that I wear lipstick, I apply the color on the inner lip and line the rest. Blend the two. Then powder lightly. If I don’t want a matte lip I’ll just got over top the powder and lip color with a light gloss..
I really done have problems with bleeding and creases with my lip treatment. I normally use a clear lipliner when it concerns me. I use a CLEAR, WHITE LIPLINER FROM UD with goOD results. Quit smoking over 35 yrs ago and use a balm and Londonderry much a not issue. Recommend UD Ozone lipliner for success with this annoying problem.
OMG! I’ve tried everything. I thought I was going to have to give up lipstick. That is until I tried lip colors. They’re the ones you apply, let dry then add a clear balm. They are wonderful and never run or feather.
Usually lip liner by itself works, but not if I’m wearing a bright red lipstick and apply gloss on top, the feathering is awful! NYX Lip Primer works well to stop feathering, even with gloss on top, but beware: too much primer can make your lipstick look cakey and patchy.
I remember hearing a few good reviews here about the UD clear liner so that is what I use.
