YSL Grey Splash, Eau d'Argent, Misty Green, Wet Blue Full Metal Shadows Reviews, Photos, Swatches
YSL Grey Splash (01) Full Metal Shadow
YSL Grey Splash (01) Full Metal Shadow ($30.00 for 0.15 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark gray with a metallic sheen. It was sheer with a thin, watery consistency that made it difficult to layer or apply evenly. The only way it worked decently (well, that’s probably a stretch) was to apply a thin layer with my fingertip and keep it as a sheer wash of color. One out of four pulls seemed to grab enough of the actual color product to apply semi-opaque coverage (that’s the lucky one you see as it is applied on my lid), and from there, it started to flake away after six and a half hours. Literal chunks of silver-gray pulling away from the skin and leaving gaping holes behind. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
YSL Eau d’Argent (02) Full Metal Shadow ($30.00 for 0.15 fl. oz.) is a brightened white with sparkle and finer silvery-white shimmer. It is sheer, watery, and thin. It flakes off easily, wears poorly, and is incredibly challenging to build-up. I would apply a layer, let it sit, wait for it to dry… wait a little longer, just to be safe, and try applying another layer, but to even out the layers, it ends up causing the underlying dried layer to flake away. It had already half-flaked off after a mere two hours of wear. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
YSL Misty Green (09) Full Metal Shadow ($30.00 for 0.15 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium grassy green with warm, yellow undertones and a golden, pearly sheen. The finish was a lot less metallic than the others, and my experience with this formula has shown that the less metallic, the better-performing. This shade wore well for ten hours, and it didn’t flake off, just slightly creased. It was semi-opaque applied to the lid and didn’t totally sheer out when blended, though there was some emphasis of lid texture. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
YSL Wet Blue (10) Full Metal Shadow ($30.00 for 0.15 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium-dark blue with a silver-ish sheen and overall frosted finish. It had more opaque color coverage if you can manage to apply with your fingertip just-so, but in practice, I found it difficult to really get consistently opaque, even color–especially when blending, it seemed to flake off as it dried down fairly quickly. It started to crease and flake after eight hours (not even close to the 16-hour wear it is marketed as!). See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

How could they sell such poor quality products?! I am actually appalled by this. Wow.
They were a real mess! 🙁
Oops! That doesn’t sound or look good…
Not at all!
Such a fail! They need to fire their chemists.
I wish these had turned out better 🙁
wow! such differences in opacity!
Yes, they had some insane inconsistency through the range, though most were disappointing.
Oh, bummer about the grey, white, and blue! Especially the blue – I love the color and Armani doesn’t have such a shade. These 3 shades performed so poorly that they shouldn’t even have been released ! At the least the green performed well, but I prefer khaki greens, which I already have from Armani.
They were so disappointing!
More than a little inexcusable!
Agreed!
Please tell me you are returning these!
No, I don’t return products I buy for review! I’ve only returned products that are actually broken/leaking, and if I bought a foundation to try that’s totally the wrong shade, then an exchange for (hopefully) the right one.
I’ve always wondered how this worked out. I didn’t think it would really be ethical to buy something, review it, then return it. Plus, you hear about Sephora flipping out when people return too many products at once and freezing your returning privileges for a year.
I respect that you don’t return even awful products when it has been purchased for review. I imagine you wouldn’t have any problems with returning a product you purchased for personal use that ended up being sub-par in quality (basically, a product you wouldn’t end up using at all)?
In the past several years, I believe the only products I have returned have been because they’ve arrived broken, weren’t what I ordered, or if was the wrong shade of foundation/concealer (and to be honest, 90% of the time I don’t, and just use it to show you two shades rather than one). With the exception of repurchases (e.g. buying another Jack Black Lip Balm), nearly everything I buy is for the blog. The nature of beauty products is so intertwined with use that it would be hard to separate the two.
That’s frustrating! Coming from YSL and $30 a pieces, that’s insane. It’s really too bad because the blue looks so pretty!
Yeah, they’re a mess. I feel like I could have thrown money out the window and had more fun, LOL!
Seems like drugstore quality.
I think drugstore products can be very good, so I don’t know if that is really a fair comparison! Both high-end and drugstore have their hits and misses.
Misty Green is beautiful and looks just perfect. I like the skin peeking through when blended out. The rest..such duds.
It really seems like only the low-level shimmer shades had a chance – the more metallic, the more likely it flaked off in chunks!
Whoa, I still am apalled these got out! So,thankful for you!
I’m still very surprised — and disappointed.
Oh, shame on you YSL!
I really think a highend brand like this should never release such poor quality products. At least the packaging is pretty 😛
I don’t think they should either! If anything, they should have released these as a sheer wash of color blah blah or something.
OMG! These are just horrid. The quality looks like it came from the Dollar store. Possibly even worse than that…. Incomprehensible to me for a HE brand to release something this crappy.
They were really bad!
Ouch. I guess it’s a good thing Misty Green is the only one of these I was interested in!
Phew! 🙂
I am always amazed at how brands can put out such HORRIBLE products like these! If it’s an inexpensive brand, that’s one thing, but YSL??? Inexcusable!
I couldn’t believe it!
Wow – don’t they have quality control at YSL? Such woeful products and they are charging an arm and a leg for it. Fortunately for us we have you Christine. Even the green, that rated well, isn’t as good as some (or most) of the greens in the dupe list and way cheaper too – eg Colour Pop.
ColourPop is so much easier, way less fussier, and then it’s just $5 to boot — daggers at YSL.
Yet another horrible release from a high end brand. I just wonder what they were thinking! Was hoping these might have improved on the Armani formula, since they are the same parent brand after all, but what a mega disappointment.
I was genuinely expecting them to be comparable, even if there were some differences, I didn’t expect it to be a difference that spans A to F.
WOW! The taupe shade you reviewed a few days ago seems like the only one worth getting!
Pretty much! Taupe Drop and Misty Green were the best-of.
Oh lord. It kind of hurts to see YSL products get F’s. That’s just terrible on their part.. why would they even release them!
I wish I knew!
After I read the reviews for these, all I could think of is that clip of music they play on “The Price is Right” when someone loses. How did they go so wrong with these??
LOL!
What a mess for a high end product. YSL has really gone downhill. Wished you had bought the 10 pan shadow sets and reviewed them instead.
Have you tried them? YSL eyeshadow is almost always disappointing for me.
I bought the 10 pan in beige set It looks good, apply well on my arm, seemed to stay on even when I purposely rub it off hard with a Kleenex, smooth, but I still like my UD Naked 1 better. I think the colors look too much alike and apply more sheer than UD. I loved YSL when it was a duo set back in those days long ago….not anymore once Loreal, I think is the one who bought YSL.
That’s what I was afraid of 🙁 At $100 (I think it’s $100 or right around there), even though it’s YSL and that price point is probably normal once you do the math, it’s so much for a neutral palette in a world of dozens of neutral palettes.
Wow. I’m surprised these turned out so badly. I like the concept and packaging but there’s no way I’d spend that kinda money for these
You & me both!
so expensive, so bad.
Thank you (as always) for a big save! I’ve been really into cream shadows lately and couldn’t wait to check these out. SO glad I waited to see your reviews before splurging on these duds.
My pleasure, Angel! 🙂
