This might be cheating because I technically haven’t seen this movie yet, but NikkieTutorials on YouTube just did an amazing tutorial for Mila Kunis’ makeup in Jupiter Ascending.
The wedding scene in Jupiter Ascending had cool makeup/hair. The Hobbit series had really good FX makeup & prosthetics.

I actually really enjoyed the makeup in Jupiter Ascending. Mila Kunis’s normal Earth makeup was nice, and the space fantasy stuff was really fun too!
Hunger Games. Recreating the makeup from the Capitol scenes for parties was a lot of fun.
Not movie, but I find the makeup and in particular eyeshadow to be impeccable
I usually love the makeup (& wardrobe) from period films: it’s so fascinating to see how our notion of “beauty” has evolved throughout history! The last film that left me wondering what products & techniques would achieve the looks on the screen was, “The Great Gatsby,” which was (IMHO) a visual masterpiece!
I agree! However, most period films adapt makeup looks of the past to look more modern and not as “odd” to the audience so it’s not distracting, just like costumes (it’s always been done, like Gone with the Wind looking very 1930s and Some Like it Hot very 50s), so it’s not always the best way of getting an idea of notions of beauty in the past. The Great Gatsby in particular was visually stunning, but the makeup and clothing were very modern with a 1920s vibe. I’ve always loved the makeup in BBC Pride and Prejudice, it looks so incredibly natural yet so perfect.
Thank you for pointing that out! Now that you mention it, I completely see what you mean about those “period looks” being diluted with elements of the moment. They’re still great inspiration, though, as are the “classics,” that demonstrate the looks that were popular at the time they were made (someone mentioned “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” for example, which I’ve never seen, but I certainly know Ms. Hepburn’s trademark look). It looks like I have some more films to watch soon! 🙂
The last one I really remember loving was Katniss’ make up in Mocking Jay pt 1.
The Great Gatsby. Lipstick looks from the twenties but contemporary smokey eyes and great costumes.
I don’t see movies much either. But, if I do it usually is with my daughter so they are kid movies are animated. So, it is either Maleficent or Disney’s Frozen. They did a great job on Maleficent and it’s quite a dramatic contouring going on. But, for the sake of the character, it’s down-right gorgeous. If Frozen, although animated, The way they brought the mood of the film and country to the costume and makeup was the first thing I noticed..amazing job! I have ever really seen bad makeup on a movie though. I mean they have experts going into it plus the whole editing piece going into it.
The Hunger Games. I love the upper class make-up 🙂
I’m not much of a movie watcher either. I did have Sex in the City, the show not the movie, on in the background the other day as I did homework. I never noticed how bad Carrie Bradshaw’s blush was before. In every episode that was on that day, she had too much. It looked bad.
So there is my non answer, answer to that question.
I feel like so many movies just have a no makeup-makeup look on all the girls, so I rarely ever notice it. The second Pirates of the Caribbean movie comes to mind, with Jack’s tribal makeup, as the last movie I actually noticed the makeup in, haha!
I recently rewatched Out of Sight, and Jennifer Lopez’s lipstick was stunning in every scene!
I can’t think of a movie, but I would say on TV, it’s Busy Phillips on Cougartown. She wears such bright, fun eye and lip colors.
This is such a good question, but I can’t even think of anything recent! I’m more likely to notice the makeup on TV shows, since I see the characters over and over. BBC’s Masterpiece Theater has amazing makeup, I think. Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, The Paradise, etc. Gillian Anderson’s makeup on The X-Files always impressed me. Her hair and lipstick were on point! The last movie I can think of… probably American Hustle. The costumes, hair, and makeup were pretty memorable.
Purely from an artistic point of view, it would have to be The Hunger Games.
I’ve always LOVED the makeup in “Love And Other Disasters”. So chic.
The last movie I can remember loving the makeup in was The Great Gatsby. Maleficent was awesome, too!
Jupiter Ascending!
Nothing stands out nowadays, at least in a good way… Even in period films, the makeup is a modern interpretation, so it bothers me throughout the entire movie; in films set in current times, the makeup is rarely anything that stands out…
The cabaret scene in Bent (also one of the most brilliant films *ever*, on all fronts!) had some amazing costumes & makeup. Moulin Rouge also comes to mind; although set in a bygone era, there were so many contemporary references that everything was tied together.
Catching Fire. I am obsessed with Capitol couture and Effie more specifically. Her style is perfection.
I tend to notice the makeup in music videos more (especially Rihanna and Katy Perry), but I really liked Young Adult and Showgirls for makeup. That authentic 90s big lipliner. 😀 haha
I just saw Jawbreaker for the first time last weekend and there were some amazingly 90s looks in there–I really coveted the lipsticks, though, especially Rose McGowan’s!

I loved the makeup and clothes of the movie The Theory of Everything, all the retro 60’s hair and eyeliner were lovely.
I loved the makeup in Maleficent. Angelina Jolie’s contour was sick!
Not a film, but I have been noticing Agent Carter’s 1940’s makeup. I’ve purchased the lipstick (she wears on the show – Red Velvet) and the powder compact and finishing powder. Love everything I have tried. And in case anyone is interested, their line of lippys is arranged by decade. The Gatsby lippy will probably be my next purchase, when it’s back in stock. 🙂
Not a movie but a television series from India, Jodhaa-Akbar. Jodha is a 16h century Rajput (Hindu) Queen which has married into the Mughal (Muslim) court. There’s a few strong female characters and I just LOVE the makeup and the fashion (sari galore!). Actually, I watch it more for the lipstick shades, monumental cat eye flicks, and unreal clothing color palette.
Eva Green’s makeup in Casino Royale…perfection.
Any period makeup from the 1950’s and 60’s. Maybe Mad Men?
I thought all the makeup in ” The Wedding Planner” was gorgeous. Jennifer Lopez and Brigitte Wilson look stunning throughout – always beautiful, impeccably done lips.

The only dramatic makeup that I loved & noticed last was hunger games…
Nebraska…! No… just joking. They didn’t spend 1 dollar in makeup in Nebraska.. but is a great movie…very moving. Great movie makeup seen recently: GREAT BUDAPEST HOTEL.

…um, some of the Jane Austen adaptation movies (or any historical novel adaptation movies really) – just seeing how ‘natural’ they go, and what they use to achieve the effect.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Jack Sparrow’s makeup in PoTC too!
Guardians of the Galaxy. The different skin colours were well done, and Zoe’s face had an extra sculptural quality that lent a genuine alien look, much like the extreme contouring in Maleficent (which was also fab). Plus the scarification tattoos on Dave.
For more “normal” makeup, Into the Woods. Meryl Streep has some gloriously OTT glam towards the end, and Emily Blunt’s look would make for a great Spring 2015 tutorial – fresh, glowing skin.
Midnight in Paris and Austenland. Very fresh and pretty. I also like the over-the-top looks from the Hunger Games series.
Ahhh, it would have to be Death Becomes Her, with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. They look SO beautiful when Bruce Willis fixes them up after they practically beat the crap out of eachother lol. They look so elegant with the dramatic smokey eyes!
I just saw that movie again a couple of weeks ago & I agree, their post-mortem makeovers are amazing!
I don’t watch many movies either, but when I do I concentrate on the plot. Makeup in movies tends to be realistic as to what is happening to the characters.
I don’t go to the movies often. I loved Bérénice Marlohe’s (Severin) makeup in Skyfall. I haven’t seen any of the Hunger Games movies, but I love the pictures I’ve seen of the Capitol residents.
A Single Man. Julianne Moore’s makeup is gorgeous in the film. No wonder it took the character all day to do that lovely 1960s makeup. Tom Ford did an amazing job on this film. Not only is the makeup beautiful, but the film is beautiful.
Had to be Sucker Punch. That eye makeup on Babydoll was beautiful, everyone really looked amazing.
Elizabeth & Cate Blanchett came to mind immediately. Her soft and natural pre-royalty look was beautiful and I loved seeing the transformation after she became queen.
Not a movie but Downton Abbey. The whole no makeup makeup thing I love it.

50 shades of Grey! I loves how natural, yet glamorous they kept anastasia’s makeup.
I still love the makeup in Maleficent, I was totally wowed by it back in July! Nothing comes to mind in something that I’ve seen since then.
I know this isn’t a movie, but I’m really liking the makeup on CW’s series “The Originals”. They concentrate on great skin and subtle contouring and have the occasional period makeup as they do flash back scenes. Would love to know what they use on Phoebe Tonkin.

Come to think of it, the makeup in Twilight was pretty nice, particularly when Bella (spoiler alert!) becomes a vampire. I remember trying to recreate that look with my Urban Decay Naked pallettes.
