Spring Collection Nail Coffret ($90.00) (Limited Edition)

Colourful prints on exotic skins have long been emblematic of Christian Louboutin’s work, whether in vibrant batik or faience porcelain-inspired designs.

For Spring 2015, Christian Louboutin introduces the Python Vulcano Limited Edition Nail Colour Coffret. Three new miniature limited edition colours are enclosed in a beautiful Python Vulcano print box, decorated with the same print as the Spring 2015 shoes and bag, incorporating blue and white paint splatters over shades of gray and cream. Louboutin was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s drip-technique paintings, and envisioned a brilliant effect of colours projected onto the surface. With these splashes of colour, the surface itself takes on a scaled effect of python skin.

A first for Christian Louboutin, this nail colour project coincides with a fashion collection. The marriage of fashion and beauty will continue over the coming seasons, as Louboutin’s shoe and bags collections will influence beauty as much as beauty will influence his approach to future designs.

Like the ceremonial flags of Italy’s Palio di Siena, the new nail colours come in three eye-catching hues:

  • Salonu An opaque cement white similar to the shoe of the same name.
  • True Blue Inspired by the Madonna song, this shade is a flattering periwinkle blue.
  • Hot Chick A vivid yellow that evokes the seductive-yet-playful appeal of the Hot Chick shoe.

I have such a major grudge against Louboutin. Fair or not, I personally blame THEM for the ongoing rise in the prices of other cosmetics (lipsticks, eyeshadow, etc.). I think their fiendish and obscene overpricing of these nail polishes has other companies playing the “how high can we go?” game. The Nars Dual Intensity palette is $90 in Canada – NINETY dollars – and I paid it because I am weak and really it is ALL Christine’s fault anyway but the prices of cosmetics is starting to hit a point where I’ll either have to stop buying or maybe give up food to feed my habit!

Sorry, but I’m not paying $30 or $50 for a bottle of nail polish, especially shades that are hard to wear. And the only Jackson Pollack inspired theme is on the box, not part of the polish itself.

Can just imagine how enthused Jackson Pollock would be to see his work imitated on a nail polish box. Sometimes the highest form of flattery is NOT copying someone you admire.

I wonder how long this particular venture of Louboutin’s will last, and how well it actually is doing. It doesn’t seem to be too well received by most, at least around the blogosphere, because of the very high price tag.

Okay… they’re in Wolverine’s colors and the bottle lids look like his claws. Dear Marvel deities: PLEASE get Hugh Jackman to hold these bottles like Wolverine claws.

This seems more like a collector’s set to me, but I am sure that Louboutin devotees will pick it up regardless of the price. I love the “Hot Chick” shade; bright, yet seductively subtle. I will have to try to locate a dupe.

$90 is insane….but I remember the one at Christmas that was about $500 (ie almost the price of the shoes) so $90 seems tame. It’s still insane.

*wipes tears from eye* I’m sorry, I love the colour scheme, and can’t get too surprised by the price when I’m used to $45 a pop for Chanel polishes, but…

Python Vulcano?!?!

Bwahahahaha!

Sorry. It’s just… with that name I would have thought that the box doubled as a playset for spy supervillain action figures or something. 😀 Mind you, I’m not really a fan of animal print at the best of times either…

As an actual collector of nail polishes this is actually a bit offensive. Christian Loubotin is known for making beautiful distinctive shoes with a trademark red sole. That quality is not carried over to the nail polish brand. Sure, maybe it might have staying power. But the colors are VERY generic and not innovative at all. There is not the distinctive red trademark any wear on the bottle. I know the bottle shape is the “new” trademark, but look at Chanel, Dior, and YSL. They all used their logos. This doesn’t scream quality, it screams I have money and all I care about is packaging. I do want to buy the original bottle as a display piece and that’s it. For the price it’s not even full size either, it’s 0.4 oz when OPI or Essie is 0.5.
