How do you get a good curl for your eyelashes? Share your techniques & tips!
I use shu uemura’s eyelash curler, which fits my eye shape/lashes well without pinching and gives a good, natural curl. Some mascaras are better/worse for holding (or killing) the curl, but I tend to like lighter-weight mascaras for helping.

For me, it’s:
1. Find the right lash curler. I prefer Tarte’s. Shu’s doesn’t create enough curl on my stubborn lashes. Shiseido’s is just a little too flat for my eye shape.
2. Use a drier formula waterproof mascara. If I get a new tube, the mascara is usually too wet, so I wave it around in the air to dry it out on the wand a little bit. My mascara preferences are Maybelline Full & Soft and Maybelline The Falsies, both waterproof.
I don’t really bother, usually. I’m lucky enough that the eyelashes on my outer corners curl up naturally. Sometimes they can go a bit wonky and curl in different directions, sure, but mascara usually fixes that. As for the relatively straight lashes on the inner half of my eyes, they don’t really bother me. My eyes are on the prominent side anyway, so it’s really hard to find a curler that fits the curvature of my lashline, although I do sometimes make an effort to curl my lashes, but I find it to be a bit of a hassle.
Asian girl with stick straight lashes here! I love my shu uemura and shiseido curlers, but since my lashes are medium length I end up having to curl them at 3 different points on the lash to make them look curly. Base, middle and near the tip.
I love to curler up from the root of the lash,middle and then the tip.when curler the root of the lash,turn the curler slightly upwards.I’m a big fan of Shiseido Eyelash Curler!
The best thing I’ve found so far is the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara. Non-waterproof stuff definitely doesn’t hold a curl for me!
I like to use they’re real by benefit and holding an eyelash curler parallel to the ground for ten secs. Heating it with a hair dries on low could help.
Mine have a natural curl, for some reason. I always thought it’s because of the way I sleep ;))
I just started having to curl my this last year. 🙁 I just use a regular eyelash curler. I recently replaced my drugstore one with a Tarte curler. It fits my eye pretty well. I squeeze gently as close to the lid as I can get, without it being painful, for 10 sec. each eye. Then I do them again, inverted, for 10-15 secs. each eye. Then two coats of mascara.
I’ve never tried the heated curlers.
How nice for me to actually give a make up tip, and with confidence too! I have been doing this for so many years on a daily basis due to my very straight, fine lashes.
1) Always use eyelash curlers before applying mascara
2) Start at the base of lashes and then move down the length of the lashes, clamping each time, I usually only need three times with my short lashes. This ensures curled lashes not bent ones!
3) Repeat step 2 one more time
4) Use a waterproof mascara (at least for first coat) so the curl doesn’t uncurl!!! Can then use your favourite mascara on top if desired.
I’m going to try your tips in the morning. I rarely pull out the curler because I’ve never been impressed with how my lashes looked after. Hopefully this will help.
I’m also going to try your way. I’ve always curled AFTER mascara, and the eyelashes stick to the curler. (There were prob directions that I never read on all FOUR eyelash curlers I own explaining to curl first!)
I do the same thing–except Step 3 I do the curling with slightly less pressure.
My favorite curlers: shu uemura and tweezerman procurl.

My lashes tend to curl pretty well on their own, but if I need an extra oomph, I’ll use whatever lash curler I have and a waterproof mascara.
I had a roommate once who used to heat up her lash curler with a blow drier!! D: ouch!
I found that the shape of my Shishado eyelash curl nicely wrap around the curve of my lash line. I find that 3 stepped pumps is all I need to curl them and a waterproof mascara to hold them all day. But my lash are fine and Blonde.
My friend with her straight Asian lashes swears by the Eyecurl II heated lash curler to style her lashes to get a curls.

I just use mascara and twist it. My lashes are naturally like 45 degrees to begin with.
Based on the readers’ responses, I’m going to check out the Shiseido and Shu Umera curlers – I have short, stubbornly straight lashes that don’t hold any curl unless I torture them for a while
I swear by my Shu Uemura curler!! The only problem is, I don’t know what to do once my pad gets old because they aren’t selling refills any more!

I use the Revlon Extra Curl lash curler and I curl at the tip, middle and base of my lashes to get a nice curl. If I curl at just the base like most people my lashes end up looking like they just have a weird kink in them…Also, I HAVE TO use waterproof mascara with a drier formula. Non-waterproof formulas smudge everywhere, and don’t hold my curl – they’re a pain to take off though even with an oil or dual phase remover.
Waterproof mascara, as some people have said already. I have lashes that won’t stay curled once I curl them. I curl and apply a think layer of waterproof mascara, do the rest of my makeup, then curl again over the mascara 10-15 mins later, once it’s dried. Then I apply a non-waterproof mascara to lengthen/thicken, etc. This is the only way it works!
My trusty Chanel curlers! 😀 I curl my lashes a lot at the moment, because I’m out of mascara and am too cheap to buy more at NZ prices 😛 The curl stays in my bare lashes the whole day, more or less. I haven’t had problems with mascara ruining the curl, but I’m pretty light with my mascara application generally.
I use Koji No. 73 curler which I heat with my blow dryer. I curl the lashes for about 20 seconds then apply waterproof mascara – currently I’m using L’Oreal Miss Manga. That keeps them curled all day.
I don’t curl my eyelashes because I wear glasses and I would have trouble seeing without them to curl the eyelashes. My eyelashes are bit curly anyway.
I just use the greatest mascara ever – Guerlain ‘Cils d’Enfer’ Maxi Lash Mascara. I get curled lashes, especially at the outer edges, both upper and lower, like no other mascara and eyelash curler has ever done!
I love that mascara! It’s one of my favorites! 😀 But I have to be careful with just one coat or they’re enormous! 🙂
I need to curl my lashes every single day, or there is nothing good happening on my face! I use the sheseido curler and I love it. After curling them in at least two places, close to the lid and near the ends, I use waterproof mascara right at the base to lock my lashes in place. I wiggle the mascara wand from side to side right at the base and really get in there. That ensures they will stay curled all day. For coat two I cover the lashes normally. Anytime I use non waterproof, the lashes wilt! Ugh. And taking it off isn’t a big deal. I use either olive oil or the Makeup wipes.
Genetics. Mine are naturally curled.
I have the straightest lashes ever, and Shu Uemura’s curler works ok for me although it’s not entirely perfect for my eye shape. I first give them a pinch with the curler in vertical position, then rotate the curler inward and give them another pinch. Waterproof mascara also holds curl better in my experience, my current favorite is Covergirl Lashblast waterproof!
I use my finger, bent in the direction I want them to flutter, and press up & back gently, curving them, and curling them out! 😀
I’m surprised how many people use the Shu Uemura curlers! They actually don’t fit my eye properly so the only one I’ve found to work well is the Kevyn Aucoin curler. It’s fantastic! So expensive, but the best I’ve ever tried!
I use my curler (that’s lightly heated) curl and pulse about 10 times at the base, and move slowly down the lashes until I reach the tips, pulsing a few times each time I move down
Then just apply 2 coats of mascara and that’s about in, sometimes if they uncurl before I leave the house I heat up a spoon lightly and hold and press that under the base of the lashes for a few second since I’m wary of using my curler after mascara, that seems to work pretty good for me! My natural lashes don’t curl at all!
