Prescriptions for Differin and a topical antibiotic (clindamycin) completely changed the health of my skin for the better. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion (and other anti-acne products) are great for spot treatments. Sunscreen in general!

Paula’s Choice products cleared up my skin!
Clinique’s exfoliating scrub. I have mild rosacea and seb dermatitis, so apart from redness on my forehead, nose, and chin, I get break outs and flaky skin. I’ve tried many other scrubs, both physical and chemical with AHAs/BHAs, but nothing comes close to how good that scrub is for me. It leaves my skin very soft, gets rid of all the flaky skin that otherwise would show under foundation, and it helps control oil and acne because of the salicylic acid in it. It can be a little harsh so I only use it once a week, and another day between uses of the Clinique scrub I will use the Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, which is the second best exfoliating product I’ve found (plus it’s super cheap!).
The other product that has been a life saver for my skin is the SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion, it’s very hydrating without being greasy (a must if you’ve got oily skin!) and it absorbs in like 2 minutes. Any other moisturizer seems to make me break out, but that one works wonderfully.
My skin is one of my beauty assets, I get compliments all the time. Besides eating healthy, resting well and drinking lots of water. I credit my Clarisonic brush with keeping my skin smooth and clean and ready for skin care products. Also love my Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum , it helps to prevent wrinkles, blemishes and redness. I change cleansers and moisturizers sometimes but I always use my Clarisonic brush at night and Estee Lauder repair serum.I also use the pink Mario Badescu drying lotion for any bumps, works overnight like a charm.
Face: Facial moisturizer with sunscreen! Lush sugar lip scrubs.
Body: Home made sugar scrubs, shea butter, coconut oil.
Hair: Natural shampoo & conditioner with no SLS, artificial fragrances, or dyes.
My Clarisonic Mia, for sure. The general texture of my skin has improved so much. I’ve also found that my skin is much better since being in Japan and using Japanese and Korean skincare products, particularly Innisfree, Skinfood, and Missha. Missha’ Night Repair Ampoule is incredible!
AMEN!
I’m currently on clindamycin/Benzoyl peroxide & a tropical retinoid (tretinoin), my acne was stalemate the first 6 weeks doing them. Now I’m on the highest dose of tretinoin (it was .025 now it’s .1), so hopefully it works.
Also I find that Olay’s face lotion works wonders because it’s a lightweight lotion that won’t harm sensitive skin transitioning during treatments but it also has sunscreen to help with issues that acne meds can cause!
CeraVe moisturizing cream is FANTASTIC if the meds are drying you out. I was on an oral isotretinoin and the CeraVe cream (in the jar) is the only thing that could keep my skin from burning and getting really dry.
Sunscreen, always. By itself and in as many products as possible. I can’t have too much. It was only thick zinc oxide cream on your cheekbones and nose till I was an older teenager. So I really appreciate modern clear, high SPF sunscreens that can be applied all over the face and body.
NuSkin Tru Face Line Corrector: It greatly reduced my eyelid crepiness and crow’s feet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do much for the deeper creases under my eyes. NuSkin Moisture Restore Day Protective Lotion SPF 15 and Night Supply Nourishing Cream: It got rid of dry, dull peeling skin patches on the bridge and sides of my nose; facial skin no longer dull; skin softer. I also use the misting spray, daily cleanser and masque. All great stuff.
Eslor Firming Collagen Day Cream: I’ve been using this for about a month, and it has really tightened up my skin, including the middle-age jowliness that was starting to set in, and improved my skin texture. Unbelievably great stuff. It’s kind of spendy, but a little goes a long way.
BareEscentuals makeup: Before I finally found a great allergist who could help me, I was super-sensitized to allergens. I also had constant and extreme oily skin and bouts of adult acne. BE helped all these issues, had great colors, and never oxidized on skin. It was a real life saver for years, and I still wear BE as my main powder veil and powder foundation.
Anything creams with hyaluronic acid. I have oily skin but I have been noticing it feels a bit dehydrated and temperamental sometimes. Since using HA in a lot of my skin care products, my skin feels more supple and not at all greasy. Also, AHAs and BHAs. I like chemical exfoliants over physical ones. Since all of my acne is mainly beneath the skin. Helps texture in the long run, too!
Biologique Recherche Serum Amniotique for combination skin with adult acné. It’s soothing, moisturizing and regenerates the skin.
That’s supposed to be a great line. Is it still on beautyhabit? I’d like to try the P51….if i remember the name correctly.
Yes. I used it with collagen and elastine marine, from the same line, all mixed with my regular moisturiser. But I’ve seen the biggest difference with Amniotique. Great product.
Sunscreen! I’m typically the youngest-looking of anyone around my age and height–and I look younger than some who are a decade younger than me (ooops…should I be sharing that?).
Skincare Books/Blogs/Education are what I would call helpful products for skin too. I really like Leslie Baumann’s The Skin Type Solution. And Dr Bailey’s skincare blog is pretty good too. Paula Begoun’s Beauty Bible and even her products are good.
Not a product but face massage helps lots!
1- Accutane, back when I was a teenager. So grateful it worked so fast and well to rid me of acne.
2- Dry ice (applied by a dermatologist) to smooth out scars acne had left on my skin. Worked wonders.
3- Estée Lauder reformulated ANR serum. The first product I saw results with in only a couple of days. I purchased it as soon as my tiny sample was empty. Almost a year later, it still delivers the same great results (way less fine lines + plumped and smooth skin).
Def have to go with almost anything paulas choice but to narrow down, its either the 2%bha or the weekly aha..best exfoliation without the grit (my skin dosent like&beads do nothing for me)I wake up glowy&its really helped my pore size&toned down redness from rocesca.
Estee Lauder Clear Difference Blemish serum and Shiseido night moisture recharge cream ,I have combination skin and these two don’t brake me out,my skin feel softer too! and my new love is Pure&Essential Natural Deadsea mud mask
Urea creams for the flakiness. For acne, zynerit(erytromicin and zinc in a ton of alcohol base) helped me in the past but i also think it ruined my skin over time cause it contains alcohol…and i had no idea back then….no wonder it was stinky, but i thoght it smelled more like vinegar than alcohol…damn. I also used it for a long time, like 2 years.
For me, Shu Uemura’s Tsuya skin youthful crystal transparency lotion worked their wonders on my skin, together with their Tsuya skin youthful radiance generator. After using it, and hubby touched my face, he was like “wow, your face is so soft!” and that’s like a first time hahaha :))
Coconut oil! I found it brilliant in helping to clear some very persistent facial eczema, but it’s also great for removing make up and for shaving.
La Roche Posay Effaclar duo + and Ren’s clarifying toner. I also had a prescription for Zineryt for some stubborn spots.
Oddly enough, for me it’s the Bioré Acne Clearing Scrub — it does a great job of exfoliating my skin and reducing pimples! The Origins 10 Minute Mask for Problem Skin also works wonders for getting rid of acne. Heaven-sent, the two of them!
Planter’s Aloe Repairing Cream! I use it as a night cream for face and hands – absolutely magical for sensitive skin!
Proactiv!!!!
2% salicylic acid had done wonders for my skin. I was hoping pure retinol would too but it seems that my skin is still adjusting to it (and hence not very much liking it).
PC BHA 9 + 2% BHA. Her info about the pH level held so true for me. I had tried every salicylic known to man (or Sephora) with iffy results. Allergic to benzoyl. Topical ATBX never helped. Hey, i’m in the grammy age bracket + should not be fighting acne (and forgetting the antiaging) until i’m bloody 66 y.o. but the resist antiaging/antibreakout line has been a true HG/godsend status for me.
I second Paula’s Resist anti-ageing with breakouts line. At 64, I have the best skin of my adult life. PC BHA products reduced my blackheads and improved my skin texture. The AHAs in the 5% Daily Smoothing Treatment keep the flakes at bay. BHA 9 is a wonder product for clogged pores. After decades of full-coverage makeup I wear a tinted moisturizer with a little bit of concealer and blush and am good to go. I frequently get compliments on my skin. My mom, 85, is another Paula devotee, who insists she saw improvements in her skin after only a week of using the Resist line. My son, daughter and grandson got rid of their acne with Paula’s Clear line. Sorry to rave on but finding good products to treat breakouts that didn’t strip my skin was a life changer for me.
BHA products. I had the worst skin until I discovered decent acne products, and those containing BHA are the one that made the most difference. I still use them for exfoliating my skin.
Paula’s Choice and Clinique.
Accutane was a major life changer for my skin! I used to have horrible cystic acne well into my 30s, until my dermatologist prscribed it (I was married and as long as there was even the slightest chance of me becoming pregnant, she wouldn’t give it to me). Retin A, Differin and some other creams didn’t help with the acne at all.
The Accutane made my skin so sensitive to the sun that I then developed sun damage spots, even with the strongest sunblocks! I now use Obagi’s NuDerm for that, and people actually stop me to compliment how beautiful my skin looks!
So it is the Accutane, then the Obagi.
Oh, and sun screen!!!! Can’t stress that enough. Right now, I’m using Avene’s Dry Touch 50+ daily and it is great! Moisturizes a little and makeup goes really well over it!
SkinCeuticals Age+Blemish serum.
holy grail!
Since I started using it many people have told me my skin looks beautiful, which had NEVER happened before.
I love this serum. It really does work! I’ll be ordering more soon!
I have skin troubles, too, and after trying every topical and even oral antibiotic out there, the thing that helped me the most was taking cod liver oil capsules. Sounds weird but it’s a natural source of vitamin A that is effectively absorbed and safe (vitamin A tablets aren’t considered 100% safe). For reference, Accutane is a concentrated form of synthetic vitamin A. Vitamin A basically helps the skin work better to dispose of the bacteria itself. Leafy greens are also high in vitamin A, so can’t hurt to up your intake of kale, spinach, and broccoli!
Definitely a regular skincare regimen (washing my face every night before bed) has helped me the most. I am in love with tea tree products, including the tea tree mask as well as the clay mask by Body Shop. I also really have to thank Clinique’s acne line the most; whenever I sense any impending acne, spot treatment with that nips it in the bud.
My Timeless Vitamin C with Ferulic Acid…definitely! Also the PTR Retinol Fusion has helped. But above all, my cleansing rutine. Day and night, religiously.
Silk Naturals Oatmeal Face Serum. This is fantastic for daily use underneath my moisturizer.
Super Special Bonus Powers: I have sensitive skin and a lot of time it’ll turn brilliant red, either from alcohol or from allergies or because venus was in the house of pisces or whatever. When this happens my skin feels hot and really uncomfortable. Whenever this happens this serum soothes down the reaction and visibly reduces redness and just makes everything feel so much better.
LUSH’s Cupcake Fresh Face Mask and Ocean Salt Scrub do me wonders!
Taking an isotretinoin medication really helped my cystic acne. After that was cleared up, a Clarisonic Mia really helps to keep my skin clean and in good shape. I also really like Skincuticles anti-aging/anit-acne serum and Estee Lauders Advanced Night Repair Serum. Those two help keep the acne at bay and fade discoloration.
Hemp seed oil. Last fall my skin was a mess, I was breaking out with huge pimples and I had a weird red, rough patch on my cheek. I stopped using my usual products and just used Cetaphil and the hemp seed oil. It moisturized my skin without clogging my pores and now my skin is back to normal.
Chanel Resychronizing Skincare, my skin was splotchy, dry in spots and oily in others, it was out of control. I tried the sample sized products and was really impressed with the results, so I went back and purchased the set. My skin is still oily, but it is under control again. Last winter was harsh on my skin. I decided to go with their skin care line and also purchased Lotion Purete mattifying toner, Gel Purite cleanser and Hydra Beauty Gel Creme. My skin looks great.
Simplifying! I try to use fewer products and I think that really helps. Just a gentle cleanse, a drugstore retinol, and a strong moisturizer at night. Gentle cleanse and a moisturizer/sunscreen combo in the morning. Sometimes a spritz of a dermalogica spray antioxidant. I exfoliate with dermalogica’s exfoliating mask or grommage gel a few times a week – no scrubs.
Vaseline around my eyes at night. I know this is controversial but it works for me.
Kate Sommerville drying lotion when needed.
I have sensitive skin prone to redness, and keeping it simple really helps. I too (as many others have said on this thread) am often told I look a decade younger than I am.
Definitely tea tree oil. Whenever I have a breakout I just place a few drops and it clears up within a day or so. I also love my Chanel Lotion Douceur toner too. It removes all of the dirt and makeup left behind after cleansing and helps control oily spots. Love them!
La Roche Posay Effeclar Duo has turned my skin around, I use it as my every day moisturiser and primer.
Raw honey and olive oil masks have cleansed my skin better than most cleansers can do on their own, and without the irritation! I have super sensitive dry eczema skin, and even CeraVe’s facial cleanser can end up drying. Eucerin’s SPF30 facial lotion for the daytime has also done wonders and looks great under makeup, too!
Paula’s Choice and my Clarisonic have really saved my skin. I’m pretty bad at keeping up with the routine, but my cystic acne as a result of PCOS has really improved. I use the Paulas Choice Clear line and especially love the Clear Regular Strength 2.5% Benzoyl treatment and the Regular strength exfoliant. Another game changer is the RESIST Super-light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30. It is an AWESOME makeup primer while protecting your skin from the sun. Plus, it’s tinted so that you don’t look like a ghost in pictures. Paulas Choice offers samples of almost all of their products, which I highly recommend. Sometimes they’ll have a 15% off deal (like right now!), but I often purchase PC products from the Dermstore website because they have free shipping with no minimum 🙂
Estee lauder advanced night repair and paulas choice products, especially the vitamin C, Retinol and AHA
I think it’s more the entire regimen than any one product, but if I have to pick one, it will be Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Lotion exfoliant. My skin is so much clearer and gone are the irritated flaky spots ❤️
Differin has made a huge differance in my skin; it helps my acne and keeps my skin from looking tired and flakey. Also consistent use of suncreen, I use Elta MD 46 Clear that’s super lightweight and non-greasy so I don’t mind using it everyday.
When I was younger, discovering 2.5% benzoyl peroxide helped a lot. I had been using a 10% formulation that bladed my skin but the 2.5% works just as well but is much less drying. Also discovering Cetaphil for a facial wash (through Paula’s books) instead of harsh, drying cleansers helped a lot.
My skin has never been too mean to me, but if we’re inlcuding all skin (i.e. not just the face) then Locoid mild steroid cream for my eczema has been a godsend. I can include the face in this, actually, as my eczema did make it there (augh!) for about half a year,
Otherwise, I’m still on the hunt for the perfect moisturiser, but I do like Bioderma Sebium for treating any spots that do turn up.
Accutane but if knew what I know now I wouldn’t have taken it.
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid- absolutely incredible on combination skin!
Avoiding mineral oil & all other petroleum byproducts. I do still use products on occasion that include them, but no more than once a week, and not all over my face. I don’t have oily/sensitive/acne-prone skin, but I have genetically larger pores. Since changing my skincare products, which include many essential oils & soap-free facial cleansers, my pores are visibly smaller. I can’t pin the improvement to any specific product, as I constantly change them, but the one thing none contain is petrolatum.
I find that Origins has helped my skin the most because of the paraben free ingredients that they have in them. I also think that pure tea tree oil is amazing because it gets rid of pimples fast. For makeup it would have to be the Asians BB creams. They make my skin look amazing.
Isotretinion helped a lot for my (adult) acne. Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Resist Softener Enriched and Olay Night Regenerating Essence for tone and anti-aging and Shiseido White Lucent serum and Olay White Radiance cream for my cloasma and pigmentation patches.
My face is a total mess, LOL. But I still love it 😉
1.Water always helps my skin.
2.My fruit of the earth vitamin E cream. Love this cream because my skin feels plumped and hydrated. It is a heavier cream but it always works for my skin. Even if I get a blemish and pop my pimples, it goes away and no scars on this face!
3.I workout and makes sure I get 6-8 hours of sleep.
Skin – Cetaphil cleaners and moisturizer – as I have really sensitive skin and L’Oreal’s products (especially anything with retinol in it) was inflaming my redness. I have been trying Elizabeth Arden’s prevage moisture beads and they are amazing.
Daily moisturizer – Ego daily moisturizer with SP 30
ELF primer – although I am not completely happy with this – I don’t think it does anything. Any suggestions for sensitive skin?
Rimmel – match perfection foundation
Funny that it’s today’s question because I just reviewed one of the products that has made the most difference for me: Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil. Basically, it turned my combination skin with super oily T-zone into a normal skin. Pretty amazing stuff.
Korean skincare!!!!!!!!!!! Snails kick ass for skin. Oh I’ve been using so much!!! I’m in LOVE with my skincare!!!! My face is plump, juicy, glowing, faint marks of color continually fading each day. Yes, everyday a difference is notable. That’s how amazing it is. Ive been researching everything possible to understand ingredients and compare, choose what’s right, and so far.. It all is GREAT! A wounded moisture barrier won’t allow acne to go away and heal.. Skin needs nutrition that won’t add to the acne, aggravate it, or cause problems. As well, the peeling skin from acne treatments need exfoliation! Chemicals in the USA are too harsh or not enough, physical ones are not happy for acne.. The Cure gel from Japan ate all my skin so the good stuff could get in, heal the cause, and treat all skin even more to the beneficial products I push into it! I feel so grateful!!! I am so very thankful and I pray the progress remains positively! (Otherwise, biggest bummer. It looks so GOOD!) awesome question!
Oh, did you want a list of products? There’s many I’ve narrowed to! As well, I stopped eating certain foods and continue with my high Plant Love and liquid content. I consume a lot and only eat vegan. If you’re interested in my cleansers, oils, washes, exfoliators, tools, toners, emulsions, serums, ampoules, lotions, creams and spf.. Happy to do so. 🙂 what happened to my face was as disgusting a breakout can look in one area, as I surfed the net I realized this. Now I look at those still struggling and wish I could just send them all I learned and help them find their way through Korea’s best secrets! 🙂
I use Acne.org Treatment to fight any sign of acne (even though I rarely get any). It works great to treat and prevent acne! It has also smoothed my uneven skintone which was by biggest skin issue. What I like most about it is that it takes very little product to be effective. Great stuff!
I think in my case, Liz earle Cleanse & Polish is a savior! I use it for years and it makes a huge difference for me; as well as Michael Todd products 🙂
xoxo
Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Serum. Great for dry skin.
Any type of pure facial oil has helped calm my skin down so much. Plus occasional uses of Indian healing clay for any breakouts have kept acne at bay!
