Formula X Cherry Blossom Top Coat Review, Photos, Swatches
Formula X Cherry Blossom Top Coat
Formula X Cherry Blossom Top Coat ($12.50 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described as a “clear top coat infused with petal pink glitter particles in assorted shapes and sizes.” It’s a mixture of small and medium uneven bits of pink-tinged white glittery bits and then large flower-shaped glitters in a clear base. I don’t know of any dupes, but if you have any ideas, I’ve love to hear them!
I applied one coat of Cherry Blossom over Dior Front Row (769), except for my thumbnail, which I applied two coats of Cherry Blossom alone. The good news is that it doesn’t feel like a fishing expedition to get the larger flower-shaped glitters onto the nail, as I averaged one per nail without trying, but they do require some careful application and tend to apply best by patting the brush against the nail, rather than sweeping it across the nail like a regular polish. The smaller bits of glitter apply fine either way, and there’s good density in a single coat. It dries down pretty quickly, and the consistency was surprisingly not too thick or too thin. The flower-shaped glitters do not always lay flatly against the nail, due the curve of my natural nail and the size of the glitters, but they don’t seem to curl. Since they don’t lay flat, though, you need at least one layer of very thick top coat to help them flatten and smooth out, or else they will catch and lift up from the nail. It’s interesting, and I don’t have anything like it, but it’ll require some extra patience and doesn’t wear as long or as well as other glitter top coats.

Oh my god! I WANT IT!!
Yay!
Oh! That is awfully cute! I’m going to have to check it out.
Let me know what you think!
Looks like a pretty nail art with just no effort! from where can i buy this top coat?
Sephora – it is linked in the post and also if you click “WHERE TO BUY” it will show you! 🙂
looks so cute, but even I face this problem with my slightly curved nails.. even with rhinestones.. makes me sad 🙁
I hear ya!
Accurate cherry blossom. How nifty! 😀
It’s fun for spring!
Hahaha on its own it kinda looks like a disease 😛 but with the pink basecoat it’s lovely!
LOL!
Looks like a dupe for Nails Inc’s new floral nail polishes – but those are $11, come in four colors, and IMHO the formula performs MUCH better than Sephora’s.
Thanks for the heads up!
That seems a bit high maintenance, but it’s gorgeous!
It’s not the easiest polish to wear at all!
See, I adored this top coat because it looked like Hanami all over my nails! It lasts well, for being a jumbo glitter, and is far nicer in texture and quality than Nails inc.’s florals for this season.
Happy to hear you’re loving it, Lauren! 🙂
Lovely polish! I might get it if I can find it in stores.
Just a heads up, I think you got the pricing and sizing wrong. You have it listed as $25 for .34 oz. Sephora’s website has this as $12 for .4 oz.
Fiuxed! Thanks!
Fixed! Thank you! I really wish I wasn’t such a moron 🙁
Its very pretty, but I think 25$ for it is reaching!
It’s $12.50! I forgot to change price!
That sounds so much more like my kind of price! Thanks Christine:)
So pretty! I love the way it looks alone!
Yay! 🙂
I know it wouldn’t be ‘cherry blossommy’ enough without the flower-shaped thingies, but I would have left those out.
It’d be like another polish entirely!
Looks so pretty on its own but it isn’t allowed to be shipped to the UK 🙁
Such is the life of polish 🙁
Oh dear, I NEED THIS! I have an obsessed with Cherry Blossoms, since I live in the DC area and get to see the ones at the Tidal Basin each year when they bloom. And I just bought the Samba lipstick… oy poor budget…
Cherry Blossoms have a special place in my heart, too!
This could be cute over a nude base on toes. I went a bit apesh*tnuts over this type of polish for awhile, but I think I’m really over it. Still have a thing for textured polishes, but it is waning too. Still, they are fun to look at.
They’re fun, but I think the market is more saturated now so it’s more like… in the regular rotation but not OMG!!! every day something new to fawn over? I guess 😉
Arrrrgh….it’s so pretty. I LOVE cherry blossoms. But $25?! It’ll be easily $30 in Canada. At that price point, I can’t justify it, especially if the larger glitters don’t lie flat. 🙁
It’s $12.50! Sorry about that!
No need to apologize! We all have our moments. 😉
Turns out its $15 in Canada. Still high, but I’ll test run it first in store to see if it’ll work on my nails. I need cherry blossoms on my nails like BURNING.
This looks really gorgeous 🙂
Glad ya liked it, Preeti!
That’s pretty! I wonder how it would look on a green base color?
It might work!
Love this glitter and the product is perfectly named 🙂
Happy to hear you liked it, Monica!
I need this in my life. is this limited edition?
Sephora doesn’t list it as limited edition, just exclusive, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that was an error – I only have the info that’s posted on sephora.com – no special info or access.
Cute!
It is!
I’m normally not a glitter person (I mean, I love the look of it, but hate taking it off.) but… holy [insert swear word here, I’m sorry lol], I want this.
Haha! I totally understand. Even when you use various methods to make it easier… it’s still not as easy as regular polish.
Having fantasies of this over a perfect soft ballerina pink… mmmmmm
Could be really lovely!
Hi Christine. Nails inc. (a UK based brand) do polishes like this in a variety of colours. This is the link if you want a look at a possible dupe: http://www.nailsinc.com/nailpolish/daisy-lane-floral/1441/
Definitely has similarities, though it seems like it has red flowers as well?
I don’t really care for it… And I’m fine with that 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
Oooh this is so cute and pretty! I’ve been cutting back on my nail polish purchases since I don’t wear them often enough, but I want Cherry Blossom. Don’t have anything like it.
It’s a fun shade – I didn’t have anything like it either!
I SCREAMED when I saw it on your wonderful nails!
Haha! 😉
Hm… this is one of those polishes that looks amazing in the bottle, and I love the *idea* of, LOL. You’ve done a wonderful job with it, and it looks/sounds like it’s actually pretty good, but traditionally these polishes just frustrate me 😛
I’m so conflicted, LOL. Lucky we don’t have the brand here for me to agonise over, ha! 😉
I can see this one still frustrating you – it is interesting and fun, but it does have its shortcomings!
Awww! This is super cute! <3
Glad ya liked it 😀
I sort of wish this had a finer glitter base and the flower glitters were just a bit smaller. Some of my nails are curved, others are flat. Those changes would enable me to wear it on every nail and look good. But as it is I would have to only wear the flowers on some nails. Although who knows, it might look better that way. A little less busy and more interesting with the flowers on only some nails.
All my nails are slightly curved, though I could see having flowers on some, but not all, nails being quite nice!
It’s very cute!
It’s very fun!
I bought this and ended up returning it. It was difficult to get the blossoms out, they wouldn’t lay flat, and with a basecoat, two layers of polish, and this topcoat I had a gloppy mess that wouldn’t dry. I couldn’t even imagine another topcoat over it.
So sad because I love cherry blossoms so much that I have them tattooed on me!
I’m normally not a fan of polishes like these because I hate fishing for the larger glitters, but I didn’t have that issue with this one – so I totally know how you feel and am sad you had that experience, Kelly! 🙁
Such a cute easy design with little effort. I haven’t been intrigued by Formula X but now I need to look further into this brand!;)
They have some fun top coats!
that is absolutely GORGEOUS!
Happy to hear you liked this one!
I just received mine in the mail today after ordering it off of Sephora.com. I can’t wait to use it!
I do feel that it looks more delicate on a lighter base. I saw one where it was layered on top of a light gray, and it looked so delicate and spring-y.
Over gray is a great idea!
The only polish that I can think of that’s close to this is Claire’s Hippie Chick. But that has medium purple and lavender flower glitters and some shimmer. But I wouldn’t really recommend that one, as after I removed it, I found strange red dots on my nails exactly where the flower glitters were. And they lasted for a little while too. Which has never happened to me before with any glitter.
Thanks for the heads up, Kel!
I’m loving this! I may have to make a run to sephora this evening!
Thanks, Christine!
♥Karen
My pleasure, Karen!
I’m thinking this would look great over the right shade of green, but I’m not sure which.
Maybe an aqua?
I like that it’s nail art without the effort. Perfect for lazy people like me!
Haha! Right on!
Gorgeous top coat, I would love to get this! Does anyone know how to order this online from Switzerland? Thanks! 🙂 And thank you Christine for your great reviews!
For polish, you might be able to have it shipped to a secondary parcel/postal service that will then ship it out, but the regulations on polish going international can be hard to overcome.
Love this nail polish! The flower shaped particles really set it apart from other “particle/glitter” polishes. Thanks for sharing Christine!
No problem, Shyann 🙂
