Have you ever slept in your makeup?

Have you ever slept in your makeup? Did your skin thank you for it? Or punish you for your mistake?

I think I’ve taken a nap once or twice with makeup on, so about an hour or less of actual sleep, but never a full, “going to bed” kind of sleep where I’ve worn makeup. Oh, wait, I have tested a couple of eyeshadows for 24-hours, so yes, indeed. No ill effects, thankfully 🙂

Uhhh so guilty of doing that. Right now it’s late, want to go to bed and just the thought of dragging myself to bathroom and removing my makeup makes me want to just jump in bed. But since you posted this question I’ll be good and go do it. My face is thanking you haha.

Noon Avatar

Probably when I was a teen, but now I take it off every night before bed. It’s come to the point where I can’t go to sleep until I’ve washed my face and brushed my teeth, it nags at me if I don’t do it!

xamyx Avatar

Back in my younger days, I often fell into bed with my makeup on… I often stayed out until the sun came up, so I didn’t make much of an effort to remove it. Fortunately, no ill effects besides the occasional pimple, so I have no regrets. I did try to at least remove my eye makeup, though!

Audrey Avatar

I know that it’s bad, but I’ve done it countless times. I’ve been much better at it lately and haven’t done it in a whole month, so go me lol! I’ve never had a problem where sleeping in makeup gives me pimples or anything and I don’t wear heavy liquid foundation and concealers so I think my powder foundation mostly wears off itself throughout the evening.

Ryou Avatar

I’ve napped with make-up on twice: One after a full-blown nervous breakdown, and once while attending an overnight studio recording for a song we were working on.

I think I’ve also dozed off in a car for about five minutes once or twice. It certainly doesn’t happen often, and most certainly NEVER overnight.

Sasha Avatar

I’ve definitely fallen asleep with a full face of makeup before. Sometimes long days at university followed by work would leave me exhausted. Then id hit the bed and remember my makeup as soon as it hit morning! On those days I’d make sure to wash my face as soon as I woke up haha.

StrangeOne Avatar

I have fallen asleep if I get home at 2am and am seriously tired.

The outcome seriously depends on the quality of makeup. Cheap stuff shows its true colours 90% of the time. I fell asleep with a full face of makeup and the bargain basement bronzer I’d used for contouring left little bumps all along my contour lines while nothing else reacted.

On the flip side I fell asleep (took a nap in the middle of the afternoon *cough*) with Dr Jart’s BB and, while I still don’t love it (chalky, not enough coverage), my face felt and looked so nice ‘after’ I woke up.

Danielle Avatar

I must have slept in my eye makeup when I was younger, but I can’t remember a specific instance. I’m pretty OCD with making sure I remove my makeup before I go to sleep.

grlnxdor Avatar

Yes, I do occasionally. I’ve never suffered any ill effects and although I know it horrifies some people it really doesn’t bother me in the least. Sometimes, I’m just too tired and I know they very act of removing it all will be enough to wake me up. I’m in menopause and good sleep is precious to me because it is so hard to come by.

Veronica Avatar

Yes, but it was more like in my late teens/early 20s, on nights where I partied a little too hard.

Now that I’m in my 40s, there is no way I would ever sleep in my makeup! Maybe a little nap in the daytime, it all comes off at night, every night.

Priscilla Avatar

Yes. On numerous occasions. I forget I have any on until after I get tired. I’m an insomniac so I am too afraid washing it off will wake me up and I won’t be able to get tired again (totally happens to me). If I do it several days in a row I get a couple of pimples, but usually there is no harm. I also avoid using foundation when I can.

Brenda Avatar

Ha!! Unfortunately yes. More lately, as I’ve been so very lazy (and tired). My skin does punish me for it too – it gets dehydrated and flaky which shows up when I try to apply foundation and my eyelashes rebel and fall out. Lesson learned. Last night I removed my makeup with super moisturizing coconut oil, so hopefully a dedicated cleansing and care regime will restore my face!

Lenore Avatar

I’ve done like you, taken a nap with makeup on. Once i fell asleep during the day with my sleeping mask on and my lashes looked crazy afterwards 😛 But i don’t think i’ve ever really slept with makeup on! *yeii on me*

I’ve taken short naps in full makeup with no ill effects, but probably only once or twice have I slept overnight with makeup on… one of those times was when we were out camping. We had no access to plumbing, I had forgotten wet wipes, and was only wearing light makeup anyway, so I had to deal. Normally I’m very neurotic about washing my face before bed and usually can’t sleep until I do; even if I’m bone tired and just getting in at 4am after a 16 hour day.

Nikki Avatar

I used to fall asleep in my makeup a lot in my early 20’s. It just didn’t seem like a big deal to me at the time. Now it makes me cringe just thinking about it! So, fast forward to age 28, and now it’s like a compulsion to get my makeup off in the evening. Maybe not a compulsion, because that sounds negative! I have just fallen in love with the feeling of getting my makeup off and slathering skincare on. Hopefully I didn’t prematurely age my skin with my slept-in-makeup days!

xamyx Avatar

I think you’ll be fine! I used to pass out with full, heavy makeup on all the time in my 20s, and at 40, I still look under 30.

Sylirael Avatar

Never – if I so much as think about doing it, I can feel my skin gleefully preparing some eczema and a few huge pimples. 😀 if I wash my makeup off well every day, then my skin is totally fine, but if I leave it on overnight…

Plus, it’ll make more laundry cos I’ll have to wash my pillowcase even more often!

J Avatar

NEVER. I live in Vegas and have had my fair share of party nights, but even still, I manage to wash everything off and moisturize every single night (along with dental hygiene). I can’t not do it. I’m too obsessive over it, not to mention it just grosses me out! Plus I always get compliments on my skin, so that’s also an incentive 🙂

Nikki Avatar

In college, I would come home after a late night of partying and go straight to bed. But now that I know how it can affect my skincare, I never ever do it. Skincare is the most important part of my beauty routine now.

Emy Avatar

Does waterproof sunscreen count as makeup? I’ve rarely ever slept with a full face of makeup on, but I have with sunscreen much too often. Most of the times it’s because I’m lazy or forgetful, or just fall asleep while cramming for exams. I’m trying not to, though, because it is terribly for my skin. If I do it twice in a row, there’d be spots popping up all over my cheeks and chin.

Laura Avatar

In my early 20s, I probably did more often than not, but I’ve gotten way better in the last year, and way, way better in the last few months.

What really helped me get better at it was finding a cleanser I love (Eve Lom, currently, although I’m dreading running out, as I got this from work and just can’t imagine spending $80 on a cleanser), and making it a real ritual. I just don’t feel ready to go to bed until I have a clean face.

I never really noticed any ill effects of sleeping in my makeup (swollen eyes, breakouts, etc), but I definitely feel it if I don’t moisturize before I go to bed. And obviously I’m going to clean my face before slathering on a cream! 🙂 My dry skin goes from slightly annoying to seriously dehydrated and flaky if I don’t moisturize before bed.

zainab Avatar

It’s happened. After late nights, or staying at my cousin’s or just too lazy. I usually find I feel gross if I don’t have a short shower before going to bed, no matter how late that is.

Kath Avatar

Yes, when I was a bit younger and I stayed up later. Now I’m very good about it, it’s as if my body can’t enter sleep mode without being sure I have washed off everything. But occasionally I still take naps with my makeup on.

Xero Avatar

I do, sometimes…when I’m just too tired/lazy to get my ass up from the bed and remove my makeup, or when I’ve been up for way too long already and I have class the next morning so I don’t even want to waste 5-10 minutes of sleep time. I try not to do it but at times I really can’t fight back my laziness. I wash my face right away when I wake up, and I’ve never really had any ill effects from it other than an occasional pimple. Then again, I only wear sunscreen/powder and no foundation, and I also don’t wear mascara. I should really invest in some makeup removing wipes for those lazy days, though.

Jessica Avatar

Yep… multiple times, unfortunately… :/ I at least do my best to get my face makeup off, for sure, when I’m lazy. I’m always extra thorough the next morning when I cleanse my skin. I’m sure I’ve suffered a few blemishes over the years due to sleeping in makeup.

I have worn makeup to bed since I was in my 20s without adverse effects or premature aging. I never had acne except for a rare stress pimple now and then. I have a porcelain/translucent-like complexion. I inherited my skin from my mom, who modeled in her 20s, so I didn’t do anything to earn it. I also inherited her highly sensitive skin, which grows more so over time and severely limits the products I can wear.

I’m photo-allergic AND allergic to SPF and the emulsifiers that bind it to its base, so I have very little sun damage since I have to live like a bat. I like my lily-white skin and dark hair. It’s a nice contrast but limits outdoor activities.

Quinctia Avatar

I’ve done it when I’ve gotten home from work exhausted and accidentally fallen asleep. That usually leads to me waking up, confused, at 3am and going and washing off my makeup, actually putting pjs on, etc.

anne Avatar

i could probably count the times (using both hands) in my whole life that i’ve done it, and my whole life is a long, long time. no ill effects noted.

B. Avatar

I’m guilty of sleeping a few times with makeup on. I never wear heavy makeup (as in heavy-coverage foundation, the works), just the natural makeup look with BB cream for school, but it’s still so bad for my skin! If it was up to me I’d always wash my face before sleeping but there are days when I’m so tired I fall straight asleep as soon as I lay down.

Tessa Avatar

Before I discovered oil cleansing, definitely. Evening skincare used to be SUCH a chore. Cotton buds and eye makeup solution and cleansing wipes and washing your face twice just to get all of the makeup off…sometimes I just didn’t have the energy to spent 20 minutes taking it off lol

But now that I have coconut oil and it takes me 30 seconds to remove every stitch of makeup, I’ll never sleep in makeup again 🙂

Zaza Avatar

Naps yes but never a full blown sleep because I am sure by the next day there will be something on my face. Oh I have slept with some lip tint on to see if it would really last that long but that is it

julieta Avatar

I only remember doing it 3 times last year, because of extreme situatios! The last time was at new year’s eve…
I HATE doing it though, this year i haven’t done it so far and i plan not to!

Abigail Avatar

Naps – absolutely! And surprisingly, I have gotten to a point where I subconsciously know I am wearing make-up, my white sheets are safe. yay! And so far, no overnight sleeps, but wearing make-up for almost 24hours straight awake – oh yes..

Mari Avatar

I’ve taken naps with mu make up on countless times… I take a bus to go to work and I always take a nap wearing make up.
I’ve never slept overnight using heavy make up, but I guess 2 or 3 times per month I sleep in the couch with the make up I did in the morning. When I remember to go to bed, I’m so sleepy I don’t even want to go to the bathroom. Now I’m trying to at least clean most make up using some baby wipes when it happens.

JG Avatar

Yeah… much more often than I’d like to admit. I do a lot of theatre and concerts, for which I will usually wear a full face, and these are frequently followed by happy hour and a long car/train ride home. By the time I get home, it is late and I just want to go to sleep. I’ve been trying to keep a container of face wipes on the bathroom counter if I know I’m going to have a late night, so I can at least wipe the majority of it off, and deep cleanse my face the next morning.
