Free for Haul Friday, Volume #219

Welcome to Free For Haul Friday!

  • Haul:  I bought the other Dior spring eyeshadow palette online yesterday, and it might even arrive today, which would be awesome!
  • Weekend plans: Brunch, then football on Sunday. I’d like to catch-up on my backlog of email and comments, too!
  • Favorite piece of jewelry you own?:  My wedding ring/engagement ring; it’s the only piece I wear 24/7, but I feel like that’s too obvious, so aside from that, the earrings my mom gave me for Christmas that are in the design of the Temptalia logo. She worked with my favorite Etsy jewelry designer, and I just love the way they look.

Share your pet photos to the Temptalia Pets flickr group! 🙂

This week’s Mellan photo/video…

Definitely Mellan’s longest toy!

Haul: My beloved headset died, so I bought a bunch of replacements. I may or may not get something from Illamasqua online sale. >>

Weekend plans: Recovering from a deadly combination of heatwave, cold, and (TMI warning) a brutal IUD-induced period.

Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I can’t really choose, to be honest. Probably my pocket watch.

Ryou Avatar

For copper IUD, which is what I have, it’s actually the other way around — Your period tends to be very heavy and prolonged, and really, really, really painful.

I went for IUD because I have borderline disorder that got way, WAY worse on the regular pills. It made me really wary of hormonal contraception, although I’ve since discovered I can take the mini-pills without much trouble. I’m considering switching to the hormonal IUD (Mirena), since the hormone levels are much lower than even the mini-pills, and according to an ob-gyn I talked to, it’s the first thing they’d recommend for someone whose periods tend to be heavy/painful.

Christine Avatar

I’m on [generic for] Seasonale and have been for a really long time, and that’s been fine for me (no issues). I was on orthotricyclin the very first time, and it made me super moody/depressing/crazy. I wouldn’t say clinically any of those things, but for me, it was really emotionally altering. Before I was on birth control, I used to have REALLY painful periods – like couldn’t get out of the bed for 2-3 days and had a hot water bottle permanently attached to my stomach. The pills definitely helped with that as well.

Thanks, Ryou!

Ryou Avatar

Ugh, I understand how that feels. I’m honestly still not sure if the copper IUD is right for me because it makes my period even worse (and I have very high tolerance for pain). Taking zinc helped a little but it’s still not great. I’m definitely switching to hormonal IUD after this. :/

Alexandra Avatar

Hey — I’m not sure if you’re going to get this message, but I wanted to let you know that I’ve had my copper IUD for a year and eight months. It took about a year for it to happen, but my cycles leveled off. I get ridiculously heavy flow and normal-to-strong cramps on day one, and the rest of the time, little to no cramps and normal flow… which is exactly how my period was prior to getting the IUD!

The two changes that seem to be permanent are that my period often lasts for seven days now instead of five, and my cycle runs for forty days instead of twenty-eight. I love it. I’ve got no idea how long you’ve had yours, but if it’s shy of a year, please stick with it. My story’s pretty common among copper IUD-wielding folk.

Madelyn Avatar

Ok, total TMI… but I had the copper IUD for 4 years. My periods were ALWAYS heavy and more crampy than without. (7 days with, 3 days without). That being said, I liked my IUD. It was great birth control without hormones or barriers for my husband and I. Just wanted to jump in there and say it is a good option, but when you have it put in, take off the day of implantation and the day after, because you will want to be in bed with a heating pad. :> Now, back to makeup.

Ryou Avatar

I agree! I’m glad I took the day off when I have it put in, because that was mad. I was told it was worse in my case because I’ve never given birth.

Christine, if you’re still considering IUD (both Mirena and Nova-T), another tip I’d give; aside from taking the day off; is have it fitted while you’re on your period. My ob-gyn prefers that (more so if like me, you’ve never given birth) because your cervix tends to lower and more relaxed during your period, so there’s less resistance and pain to get it done.

Haul: Essie No More Film and Ballet Slippers, Etude House brow pencil in Dark Brown, Tulips Apothecary Pucker Pots in Christmas Cookie and Candy Cane, Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede l/s in Fashionista,

Weekend plans: Relax and read many books!

Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I have a few, but there’s a pair of oval-ish silver earrings I own that have a smaller oval inside the larger oval. It’s a dangly pair. I feel like they are sophisticated enough for an office, but hip enough for an evening out. So I can wear them for different occasions and with different outfits.

Zoe has started putting her head on my lap when I sit on the floor. It’s really cute. 🙂

Kitsch Avatar

Haul: Nothing recently!
Weekend plans: Editing the hundreds of pictures that I haven’t gotten to as well as writing up some more blog posts. Possibly also making a pumpkin cheesecake.
Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: Other than my engagement/wedding ring set, it would have to be the bracelet that my mother made me years ago. She took a class in silver working and made us both twisted cuffs. I think the only time I’ve taken it off for the last (5+ years) was when I needed to either get an x-ray or MRI or something done where I couldn’t have it on.

Kitsch Avatar

I think I’m a bit short on the cream cheese (darn my bagel cravings!), but I might try it anyway or see if I can grab a ride with my friend to the commissary tomorrow!

It really is. She actually lost hers a year or so ago and was freaking out (she had to take hers off for a medical procedure) and I found a similar one on etsy and got it for her for Mother’s Day. I’m pretty sure I would have freaked out if I lost mine as well!

■Haul: Pixi Glow Tonic, Murad toner, Clinique Take The Day Off cleansing balm–all skincare!
■Weekend plans: Packing! We are moving soon and I am trying to get a head start.
■Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I don’t often wear jewelry, so I guess I’ll go with my wedding band. Boring, I know!

Laura Avatar

Haul: Nothing. Well maybe an ipsy bag that I hope arrives today.

Weekend plans: Going back home finally and continuing to organize the place.

Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I don’t think I have one. I’m not terribly attached to my jewelry since I don’t really wear it that often.

Alexandra Avatar

Today, I’m getting a bevy of eyeglass frames to check out from Warby Parker. Iiii have Le Metier de Beaute Sheer Brilliance in Summerland arriving tomorrow, and next week, I’ll be getting some jeans I’ve been eyeing for months and finally broke down over when they went on supersale. Can’t wait.

Haul: Lots of drugstore items: Maybelle Baby Skin Pore Eraser, Rimmer Stay Matte Foundation (totally wrong shade… fail lol). Rimmel Stay Matte powder. Jesse’s Girl Liquid Eyeliner- my new HG liquid pen liner. It is amazing. Not waterproof as it claims to be, but nothing is for me so I can let that slide. 3 of the Nicole by OPI- Carrie Underwood collection. Love the colors!! But I mostly bought them because I love Carrie U lol. Baby skin lip balm. I feel like there were more items, but I can’t remember off hand. I really want to go to Sephora or make an order online since I have a gift card that’s burning a whole in my wallet but I’m not sure what to settle on!!
Weekend plans: Nothing.. just relaxing hopefully.
Favorite jewelry: Mine would also be my wedding band/engagement ring. i don’t wear jewelry often. But aside from that- I have a necklace that I got from my mother in law when my husband and I first started dating- I don’t wear it often (or any jewelry like I said) but it is sooo pretty. its a star of david from Israel from Michal Negrin (my favorite jewelry.. almost all that I own lol.) I always tell my husband that he is lucky i’m not into diamonds.. but he then reminds me that my makeup addiction is quite pricey too lol and I gotta admit, he has a point 🙂

Rikki Avatar

I got a package filled with a few makeup goodies from a YouTube friend. One of them was the beautyblender.

Only plans worth it that I can think of are filming, editing, and all that stuff for YouTube.

And right now, my Gekikara from Majisuka Gakuen “ROCK” necklace and my Eternal Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars transformation wand necklaces.

Amber C. Avatar

This weeks haul: It’s been awhile since I have posted because I haven’t hauled that much recently. The ULTA 20% off coupon and double points for VIB with a skincare purchase made me want to buy, so here goes!
ULTA: IT Cosmetics Flawless Foundation/concealer brush.
Vitabath Cupcake Couture Dreamy Pink Frosting shower gel.
Vitabath Cupcake Couture Luscious Lemon Creme shower gel
Vitabath In Bloom Asian Orchid and Coconut shower gel

Sephora Haul:
Shiseido Ibuki Refining Moisturizer
Shiseido Ibuki Softening Concentrate
Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara
Fresh Sugar Rose lip treatment

And finally Maskcara IIID Hightlighting and Contouring foundation. The whole contouring thing will be a new venture for me, but I want balance for my moon face! lol
This weekends plans – Hanging out with BFF Saturday and i’m off Monday, so I will be able to paly with all my goodies!
Favorite piece of jewelry – I don’t wear jewlery often because it irritates my skin, but I have an opal and sapphire necklace that belonged to my mother. She passed away a long time ago, so it has sentimental value.

Sarah Avatar

So cute! It’s like a toy, security blanket, and body pillow all in one!

Haul: the new Tarte matte eyeshadow palette, Rouge Bunny Rouge lipstick in Murmurings and lip pencil in Marco, Paul & Joe lipstick in Once Upon A Time (thanks for the review, Christine!), the Laura Mercier lip trio in Natural, YSL Creme de Blush in Audacious Orange, a couple of Sephora eye pencils, and an order from ACW: Kryolan palette in Santiago, Almay Nearly Naked foundation, Almay eye base and concealer, Cargo palette in Vienna, Maybelline Color Tattoo in Rich Mahogany, and Eyes By Design palette for blue eyes.

Weekend plans: It’s my birthday on Monday (hence the massive haul 🙂 ). Haircut, volunteering at Humane Society, brunch, more brunch, getting older… Taking the day off for my birthday – I haven’t worked on my birthday ever. 🙂

Favorite piece of jewelry you own? I’m not a jewelry person; I rarely wear it. But I love my engagement / wedding ring set. Husband did a good job picking it out!

patsyann Avatar

No hauls for me! I am going to Paris on Wednesday with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary (we met in Paris) so I am saving my euros for a French drugstore haul!! Some organizing and preliminary packing with be going on this weekend. I hope to go and see the newly reopened and remodeled Guerlain flagship store on the Champs. I am going device free so I will have a lot of Temptalia to catch up on when I get home. I want to check out the Bourgois foundations for sure since they are no longer available in the USA. Trying to decide what makeup to take is driving me crazy. I am trying to keep it down to a small bag with enough alternatives to keep me from getting bored…yet saving room for a mini haul. I am taking a check on bag with bubble wrap and electrical tape just in case. 🙂

kjhemeon Avatar

Lucky access to Bourjois. Loved it @ the big S. So sorry they’re gone. Their Canadian site doesn’t impress me enough to order. Hope they have a greater selection en France. Bon Voyage et Bonne Anniversaire! Oh, yeah, that’s birthday, but the sentiments are there. Haven’t had French since 1965 + they laughed at me, when I could speak it passably. You could spend a month there just doing museums. You can do the original Sephora! One of my friends brought me a red lippy from there + I treasure it. Give us all a run-down on your drugstore haul. Wish you could bring me some Bien Etre original. I have to source it via Haitian friends! Have a blast and a fine re-romance.

tzwiggy Avatar

Haul: theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer, Cindy-Lou Manizer, FratBoy, DownBoy, Chanel Sonate and Murmure Glossimers.

Weekend plans: Study!

Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I love all my jewelry, but can’t say that I have a specific piece that stands out as a favorite.

CatG Avatar

Haul: I planned to buy Revlon’s Adorned but I can’t find it any where!!! I did get NYX Butter Lipsticks in Licorice, Fireball and Razzle though. I plan to get three more!
Weekend plans: Homework all weekend.
Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: A marcasite ring an ex bought for me on campus when I was living in the dorms. It is just lovely and suits my style perfectly. Plus I don’t always like the way rings look on my short pudgy fingers, but this one always looks nice for some reason!

Leticia Avatar

Haul: Nothing yet, but I’ll try to sneak into Sephora this weekend to see if they´ve received new goodies – it was quite empty after Christmas.
Weekend plans: Do cleaning at home (yay 🙁 ) and hopefully dinner with my boyfriend. And football on Sunday!
Favorite piece of jewelry: a Murano crystal pendant that my best friend gave me ages ago – I wear it at least four times a week.

Mellan’s the cutest thing with his giraffe wrapped around him – it doesn´t cease to amaze me that he doesn’t destroy his toys! What a well behaved boy 😀 !

Leticia Avatar

I hope to find more Bare Minerals products, particularly their Ready Eyeshadows, which I want so much to try! There is a large space at the new Sephora here in Mexico but there are very few products 🙁

Mariella Avatar

Haul: Not much this week as I’ve been so busy at school but I did order and receive the IT Cosmetics Showstopper (same as was on QVC a few weeks back) containing their newest serum/primer (love it), a new iteration of their powder foundation (love it too), a double ended Bye Bye Undereye concealer/illuminator on the other end and 2 brushes – a fan brush (take it or leave it) and a snazzier (and to my eye, trashier) looking version of their buffer brush for the powder foundation.

Weekend plans: it’s going to be a mountain of marking (my classes did their culminating cooking tasks so those have to be marked as well as their final big written assignments). Exams start next week (yay! more marking!) so this needs to be out of the way.

Favourite piece of jewelry: probably the channel set diamond eternity band my husband got me when I was pregnant with our 2nd child. I wear it all the time and prefer it to my engagement ring as it’s more tailored looking and just works with my lifestyle. Oh, and I quite like my Pandora bracelet but it is a bit more “fussy” than my ring.

Sylirael Avatar

I cannot get over Mellan’s bowtie – SO CUTE. 😀

Haul: I was tempted by a 20% off sale on Revlon stuff (I’d love to try another super lustrous lipgloss and a couple of polishes), but I forced myself to walk past – so more of an anti-haul, I guess! 😛

Weekend: ballet, more ballet, and then i need to finish a paper so I can submit the damn thing already!

Favourite piece of jewellery: definitely my engagement and wedding rings. I wear them all the time! Not very original, perhaps, but they don’t fit together (deliberately) so I have one for each hand, LOL.

A. Mar Avatar

Haul: Nothing! Saving for MAC’s Fantasy of Flowers and setting aside for a new computer.

Weekend plans: Writing, working on new recipes and organizing the hall closet (which has become the place of no return).

Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: Engagement ring, though that does feel like a cheat. A necklace my mother made. She’s actually my step-mother of only a few years now. She’s my opposite. She’s a big, bold personality. Wild house with wild clothes. The necklace is a colorful butterfly so it feels symbolic of having her with me.

Joanna Avatar

Haul: Guerlain spring! Both bubble blushes, mocha mascara, eyeshadow quad, lipgloss, nail polish and attrape couer lipstick

Weekend plans: Housework on Saturday. On Sunday, shopping with my mom and watching the 49ers game with my hubby.

Fave jewlery: Other than my wedding ring, Coach earrings that are two-tone “gold” with “diamonds”

CKG Avatar

My first non-Mac Christmas-money splurge! I may never do it again lol
Haul :
Burberry Trench Kiss Lip Mist 216 (Terrible colour for me; probably the first lipstick I’ve ever bought without seeing a swatch! Won’t be doing that ever again. It’s okay with one light pass but I can’t figure out what to pair with it and it’s too ugly on me to try too hard. Beautiful packaging but damn!)
YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Corail Incandescent
Tom Ford Sable Smoke and Coco Ravish
Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin
Guerlain Shalimar (so smooth on the lips but a bit patchy over time with balm underneath) and Bal de Mai (the shimmers!)
Lancome Rouge in Love Miss Coquelicot
Dolce and Gabbana Magnetic Monica (Which I think is too dark for me but people seem to think it’s vampy and it applies nicely and doesn’t dry my lips)
Maybelline CopperCharm (As a gift)

Plans:
Wherever the day takes me!

Favourite piece of jewellery:
Hmm. I took my time so carefully getting my pieces and worked so hard to save for them so all, but my wedding rings are the most precious

KaseyCannuck Avatar

Haul: A couple of Maybelline Eye Tattoos that I didn’t have yet for half price at the grocery store in Audacious Asphalt and Fierce &Tangy. I treated myself to a Jack Black lip balm at Sephora and it’s every bit as fantastic as everyone says it is!! I also got a Pantone eyeshadow pallet on sale that I couldn’t get online.

Weekend plans: None.

Favourite piece of jewelry: A filigree ring from my boyfriend. It was the most beautiful ring I ever saw and he went back and bought it for me for Christmas.

Amanda Avatar

Haul: I got the new Maybelline Baby Skin Primer and a Vaseline Spray and Go body moisturizer. So far I like the Baby Skin, but the Vaseline Spray and Go just isn’t hydrating enough for me for the Canadian winter!
Weekend plans: Dinner with my boyfriend tomorrow night, then yoga on Sunday. Somewhere between all of that, I’d like to catch up on some reading for school and start planning a presentation I have to give…phew!
Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I have several items that I wear on a regular basis, but I feel naked without my Michael Kors rose gold chronographic watch and my Tiffany & Co onyx ball stud earrings.

Madelyn Avatar

Haul: Nothing yet. I am going to need the new Kat Von D pallet and at least 4 of the lip tars from OCC’s spring launch, so I need to save for a few weeks.

Weekend plans: My husband and I are relaunching our vegan food site with videos, tons of new recipes, etc. This is exciting, but lots of work, so this weekend will either be spent in front of the computer or in the kitchen testing recipes.

I really do not wear much in the way of jewelry. I love my wedding and engagement ring. The wedding ring was custom made of white gold to go with the white gold/aquamarine antique ring that Jason found for me. ;> After that, I love the 4X6 inch dragon necklace that takes up half my chest. It is heavy and pretty unique. I feel special and racy when I wear it.

kjhemeon Avatar

Mellan: my mother, RIP 1999, used to say, “Well, if you loved that dog so much, why not just knock the woman out + take it home?” I still hear her in my mind, when I see a wonderful pup. I checked out the flickr group + LOVED all the contribs. Ladies who have jewelry from mum, remember to cherish her memory + give thanks for her. My 2 ‘jewelries’ are actually from the distaff side. My mother’s engagement present to my father, a 1937 Hamilton + my grandfather’s 1932 Hamilton. It’s a total be- ach to get them repaired, as no one works on them any more. The repros currently are a fortune! I have lost a lot of my belongings due to adversity, so they really mean something. (‘course I lost NO MAKEUP + even have Revlon’s naked pink from before the JFK assassination, which must have one helluva lot of preservatives! Many of my Nars lippies funked out in less than 5!)

Haul: Big S: Tarte matte palette. IMHO good for light to medium (only)+ almost more of a pinky neutral than a Springy thing. Some discontinuing Korres lippy stuff + the Korres magic light contouring palette. Lovely embossing of script on the powder. Last one forever @ big S. Is this going to turn into another Bourjois-type debacle? Some things go to the big U when S d/cs them. Before or after, IDK. But, it happened with Cargo, LOLA at first, Sue Devitt, I think, Pula Dorf, and some others. I hate to see things disappear, especially when they are still in business! Korres blushes are even rated ‘best’ on Paula’s Choice brand reviews. And you know, that’s not easy to get. Got a Jack Black ginger + grapefruit + now want to buy it for all my coworkers, female AND male. Thanks, Christine! Also the Sephora colored eyeliner set. Not bad + the purples go well with the Tarte matte cools; the green lines well with the warmer shades. Come to think of it, the Tarte maybe really needed the pop. In rethinking it, it’s great, but maybe a bit boring, if that makes any sense.
Plans: nothing good. My oldest dog, Teckel, yes a dachshund named dachshund, is probably crossing the Rainbow Bridge. She’s 16, but it still hurts. My next in line (Yorkie: Rudy for Rude Dog) has a collapsed trachea and cardiac issues. So I might join Will Ferrell in losing three in one year. Thank God I’ve got a baby (3) dachsie. Night job @ Dollar Tree. Don’t forget to cruise it for $1 overstock on Milani + Rimmel + Maybelline. A makeup friend @ day job loved one of the $ Tree pinky nudes and asked me “Nars? MAC? Maybe Too Faced?” Had to laugh, esp. as she also formerly wage slaved at $ tree! And I have to take my Mac in for an upgrade and more memory, so I can see you better + the loading isn’t a toothache! Oh, yeah, a much needed haircut.

Christine Avatar

You are so right about cherishing memories and giving thanks to special people in our lives, often mothers! I’m glad you were able to keep a few of the heirlooms with you over time.

So Korres is definitely getting the boot from Sephora, couldn’t tell you why (I have no idea), but they seem to have a fairly successful global business, so my hope is that they won’t be gone for good in the U.S. but we’ll see. Glad Jack Black is working well for you. I totally understand what you mean about Tarte’s new matte palette – not necessarily exciting but I could see it being a workhorse of a palette for some.

Sorry to hear about your two babies! I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be potentially losing three in one year.

Helena Avatar

I knew those earrings were Temptalia-shaped! They’re so beautiful…if I ever had a logo I’d do the same thing.
Haul: Nothing makeup-wise caught my eye recently; I’m broke anyway. But when I get money soon I want to buy some cheap, comfy clothes.
Weekend plans: Go to the gym because I slacked on it this week. I need to figure out what I’m going to do for cardio…stationary bike or treadmill most likely. Also, keep eating less than I’m used to because my stomach has become a stretched-out black hole for Calories! The hunger will be worth not overeating.
Jewelry: A silver Tiffany lock pendant my cousin/godsister got me for my birthday/middle school culmination years ago. The original silver chain was accidentally broken by my boyfriend in bed (hahahaha!) so he replaced it with a shiny steel one for our sixth mensiversary 🙂 And also a spiked stud that I wear in my labret piercing sometimes.

Melissa Avatar

Haul: Nothing! Low-buy 2014.
Weekend plans: Well, I guess technically you can say my weekend started last night with a few too many drinks, lol. But on Sunday the hubs and I are going to dinner and a movie.
Favorite piece of jewelry you own?: I’m gonna have to say my wedding ring and engagement ring, too. Besides that, my white gold and diamond heart stud earrings I got from my husband for our dating anniversary before we were married.

Christina Avatar

Not Friday, but Sunday, but I had so much work to do Dx
Haul: I went shopping for Guerlain Meteorites (great timing xD), but, of course, all were sold out and they are expecting the new ones. Originally I wanted Perles du Paradis, but they got sold out even online (where I shop). So I decided that I start with the old ones, Teint Rose. I got disappointed and then I checked my mail and saw that Paradise Pearls went in stock again although I thought they were long gone. So I ordered them, yay, hope they work for me finely))
I also bought Anny nail polish in Red Kiss and it’s a great one! Now I one the pearly white shade <3
Weekend plans: Work and sleep
Favorite piece of jewelry you own? My handmade Orochimaru earrings. I couldn't find good ones so I made them, I like them a lot. I also have a vintage brooch from my great flapper grandma with jade in them.
