5 Smoldering Cool-Toned Taupe Eyeshadows

The world could always use more cool-toned taupe eyeshadows (that are permanent!), and here are five of my current favorites:

  1. Make Up For Ever S556 Taupe Gray — a shimmery taupe
  2. Dior Aventure — a gray-taupe with a frosted finish
  3. Giorgio Armani Shadow — a cool-toned, purple taupe
  4. ColourPop Meow — a frosted, purply taupe
  5. Inglot #434 — a rich, deep taupe with cool undertones

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Ooooh – taupes! My favourite shade of all with so many variations. Coincidentally, I just mentioned MUFE Taupe Grey in another discussion here. I also love to bits Inglot 434, though to me, it seems more “purple” than taupe but then maybe that’s what you mean by “cool taupe”. To your list, I would add Benefit Up In Smoke (if they still make it – I’m not sure if it was “axed” when they relaunched their shadows but I fear it was), Nars Lhasa, Cargo Yukon, Sephora’s Be on the A List and the ever elusive Insane Jane from TheBalm.

It really can’t be easy for you (I mean this in all sincerity) to categorize so many of these shades. Looking at Dior Aventure, I’d have called it “grey” (mind you, it may well look different in real life vs. in a photo) – all this “warm/cool”, “pink/peach” can get so tricky. I think you do an amazing job of breaking down and classifying/categorizing products.

Sometimes – colors like taupe can be tricky (and any other shade that’s more like a combination of more generic colors), because if they are too cool or too warm, they’re not really a dominant taupe color. There are definitely a fair number I end up categorizing as brown, because I think they’re more brown than gray-leaning (ultimately what makes a brown… a taupe). I think undertones can be harder, especially when colors are sheerer or have a cooler base with warmer shimmer – sometimes the shimmer is strong enough that it makes it seem warmer!

Ha! A post on my favourite colour on my birthday, lucky me! Have you tried Kevyn Aucoin Eye Pigment Primatif in Mistress? It’s a gorgeous cool-toned taupe
