Skincare Tips from Renée Rouleau: 5 Reasons to Wash Your Face at Night

Savvy, smart, and always knowledgeable, Renée Rouleau is my go-to for all that is skincare. She’s a celebrity esthetician with her own line (I love her AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel!), and she also regularly updates her blog with skin care tips and tricks.

What’s the #1 reason someone will go to sleep without washing their face? Exhaustion. I certainly understand the discipline and effort it requires to perform your nighttime Skin Care routine, especially when you’re exhausted. But, you really must do it.

Here are five reasons why:

1. Touching your face all day long, without intentionally doing so, is making your face one of the dirtiest parts on your body. It’s important to clean the skin to avoid the spread of acne bacteria that can cause increased blemishes.

2. Cleansing your skin at night will reduce oil and the ability for acne-causing bacteria to thrive inside the pores. This means less break outs!

3. Your skin repairs itself at night, so removing makeup gives your skin a clean palette for applying your night time performance products for maximum absorption.

4. While you sleep, your skin is at rest allowing regeneration to occur. For the best anti-aging results, clean your skin with a gentle sulfate-free cleanser like Luxe Mint Cleansing Gel or AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel and use a high performance serum and moisturizer.

5. Moisturizers evaporate when on the skin all day, so washing your skin and applying moisturizer at night ensures it will stay moist and hydrated.

Skin Tip: Too tired to wash your skin at night? Perform your nighttime skin routine at 7:00 or 8:00. Earlier is better than never!

Voila! The skin is calm, healthy and refreshed!

  1. i cringe whenever i think about all those times i went to bed without washing my face when i was a teenager. but now, i’m absolutely diligent.

sure it’s hard when you’ve had a performance and you don’t get home til after 1am; but even then, i never just use wipes. i do the whole routine! i’m so obsessed with taking care of my skin nowadays.

I’m more interested in 5 reasons to wash your face in the morning even though you just washed it the night before!

as a late showerer (lol) I must say this is not a problem for me… I love knowing I’ll get a “clean night sleep”.
    : ))

If I don’t my skin looks wretched for a week!

Every time I see this picture, I think it’s so bizarre how the woman getting a facial has a full face of makeup. That just doesn’t make sense, so it’s an odd picture to me. Obviously, the woman is a model, but this is such an artificial scene that I’m really thrown off.

I agree. Also, her skin is so porcelain smooth. I understand she’s a dermatologist and making their skin look flawless is kind of the point, but it’s just a bit TOO much in my opinion, but your mileage may vary.

  6. Back when I was a renegade in a moped gang, I’d just come home at 3am and fall asleep without a thought to my skin. Haha. Perhaps moped exhaust kept me from breaking out though. 😉 Now that I’m getting older I’m all about cleansing and slathering on the moisturizers.

  7. Hi Christine,
Can you recommend some products that you use for your nightly regimen, or refer to me to a previous post? I really want to pay more attention to properly cleaning my face/skin.
    Thanks so much!

  8. No matter how tired I am, I will always clean my face at night. Even if it means I would take a short nap before waking up to wash my face, have my late night shower then slumberland!

I don’t do a whole routine on washing my face with like 500 other soaps and toners and all that every day/night (but I do always remove my makeup! Always!), and I don’t have acne or pimples. This is normal though right?

Yeah, I have dry sensitive skin… I really just need to remove my makeup before bed because if I wash it more than once a day (even with really gentile, creamy cleansers) it will get dry splotches. And I never, ever get any acne or pimples either.

I am so bad about forgetting to wash my face that it’s one of the first things I do when I walk in the door after work. The only time I postpone it is if I am running errands. On the plus side, I ALWAYS moisturize after cleansing in the evenings. My face looks much better than it did a couple of years ago.

  11. I have to say that I do not understand how anyone could go to bed without washing their face at night. It’s like not brushing your teeth or not washing your hands after the toilet. *shudder*

I have to wash my face at night or I seriously break out the very next day. Not to mention my eyes get swollen if I sleep with eyeliner on! I just wish I knew sooner how important sunscreen, cleansing, moisturizing, and removing my makeup is. I feel it would have made a huge difference in my acne prone skin that I still struggle with.

I always remove my make-up before i sleep no matter how late/tired i am. But on days that i’m at home sans make-up i skip re-washing my face before bedtime…that was until a month ago when i suddenly had breakouts…so now i wash my face at night and change my pillowcase everyday…in 4 days my skin was clear again.

Is there a good night cream you could suggest? I have normal to combination skin, I’m looking for something to prevent aging damages (I’m 31). Any advice?

I have been washing my face religiously for about 5 years. I used to sometimes go to bed with makeup on. Once it becomes a habit, it is so easy. There is no way, ever, not matter what, that I would go to bed with out washing my face. Even if I’ve been drinking, or it’s really late, no excuse. It is a habit I couldn’t break.

I agree to do your face washing regimen earlier in the evening rather than right before you go to bed. I take my makeup off as soon as I get home from work.

But what she said about using a cleanser with alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids in it: there’s no point in having a cleanser with these ingredients since cleanser gets washed off your skin almost immediately and those ingredients need to sit on your skin for a while in order to do their job.

  17. The best reminder in this article was that skin repairs itself as you sleep. The importance of healthy sleep for healthy skin is a good tip. I also find drinking water through the night helps to keep your body and skin hydrated which reduces the early onset of fine lines and wrinkles. Choosing organic skin care products helps to maintain healthy ageless skin.

I never wash my face at night. It’s not that I don’t think that it is the right thing to do, it’s just that I work all day, and as soon as I hit the door I begin working again…until I’m so tired I go right to bed. I know this excuse is lame to you all and I know I must do better which is why I bought the Mary Kay Timewise system…hopefully, this will get me on track!!
