Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara (Waterproof) Review, Photos, Comparisons

Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara
Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara

Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara (Waterproof) ($7.50) is designed to give you full, curled lashes.  It purports to give you “70% curlier” lashes, and lashes look “lusciously curled, plumped and defined.”  Rimmel also advertises that you’ll see 7 times your natural volume and the curl will hold for a full twelve hours.  I gotta say, Rimmel is making a lot of very big claims about this mascara!

Unfortunately, my experience didn’t really live up to Rimmel’s claims of fuller, well-curled lashes–at least not to the degree that they advertised.  I’d say that my lashes are, perhaps, have a slight lift to them, but it’s not much–it’s just more pronounced by the lengthening of the mascara and slight volume it adds.  It just neither gives me fuller nor more curled lashes really.  I’d still feel like I needed to use an eyelash curler to really get the curl I’m looking for, and the mascara performs pretty average in all other aspects.

Out of personal taste, I tend to like incredibly rich black shades–the darker the better–so Rimmel’s level of blackness in pigmentation just doesn’t do it for me.  My lashes do look better when I use it, they just don’t stand out like they do with other mascaras that I have loved.  To be honest, I can be a harsh critic when it comes to mascara, because I always judge a mascara on how well it performs relative to the claims the brand makes about what it should do.  It’s great if it still turns out to be awesome in some other way, but usually if they fall flat on their claims, then it’s just so-so and nothing stellar.  This is definitely the case with Rimmel’s Sexy Curves mascara.

I will say that one thing I did really like about this mascara is the brush separated lashes really well and kept them from clumping despite layering on three coats of mascara.  The brush is relatively easy to use, and the packaging is definitely eye-catching in that bright, metallic teal tube.  (It does, however, hold finger prints, so big boo from me.)

Bottom Line: I’d say to skip this mascara.  It performs fairly average at the end of the day, because it really doesn’t do much but add a smidgen of length (and maybe a little volume).  It just looks like I’m wearing mascara, but it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a very good one!

Anyone like this mascara? I could have sworn some readers said this was their favorite!

  • Product: 15/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

Recommendation:  I’d pass on this mascara–it just doesn’t live up to the lofty claims Rimmel makes about it at all.  I normally expect mascara claims to be rather outlandish, but I feel like this one doesn’t even get close.

I have the Sexy Curves Mascara in the purple bottle (not sure of the difference) and I agree that it’s nothing special. But I do like to use it on my bottom lashes because the wand is skinny. It doesn’t get product all over the place like I tend to do with my bottom lashes.

I’m too lazy to dig out a mascara just for the lower lashes, LOL! I just do them with whatever mascara I’m using. Props to you for finding a good use for this mascara!

I think that means it’s not waterproof

I have been wanting to get this mascara for a while now, but everytime I see a review for it, it’s always negative. I guess that’s a sign telling me to leave it alone and try and find another DS mascara.

I thought I was one if the very few people who dislikes this mascara, because I’ve heard so many people rave about it. What’s your favorite mascara of all time? I’m looking for a good volumizing mascara. Thanks!

At the end of the day, probably MAC Plushlash mascara, because it works really well for me and the price tag is easy to take. I love Chanel Exceptionnel, Givenchy Phenomen’eyes, and Lancome Oscillation, but they’re all SO pricey and you really should be tossing them every three months, soooo… it’s tough to keep forking over $35 for a mascara I haven’t even finished, LOL. At $11 or $12 for Plushlash, it’s easier.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I have the regular one and I think its amazing..I’ve tried all ds and high end mascaras this one by far delivers the most for the buck. I wanted to try b/c of Pixiwoo and I ended up loving it.

Pixi2woo Tanya just used it in a recent vid and her lashes looked amazing. But everyone’s experience is different!

It does a great job of separating and curling my lashes especially the ends ..they almost look fake. Oh well I guess everyone’s experience is different! :) but its my fave ds mascara so I feel compelled to defend it ha!

The best mascara is definitely Maybelline! I see no difference in your eyelashes really and I do love Rimmel.

I haaaated this product. I actually returned it, which I’ve never done before. When I was combing it through my lashes it actually felt sticky which was pretty awful.

I bought the normal (non-waterproof) version a while ago and initially loved it, but then hated it. I think I just convinced myself in the beginning that it was good, but really it didn’t do anything for my lashes. I agree with an above commenter that the wand is nice for bottom lashes. However, this mascara flaked HORRIBLY on me, so I had to throw it out. Sad.

LOL! At first glance, I was like, OK, not bad, but then I started dissecting it and reading their claims… and then no!

I bought Sexy Curves non waterproof (purple tube) a few weeks ago while it was on sale, but I haven’t tried it yet. In general I like Rimmel mascaras because I have been using Glam Eyes on and off for over a year now. I will just have to try it myself. I learn a trick on TV the other day where a MA suggested doubling up your mascara as liquid liner. You just dip your eyeliner brush into the tube and apply it the same as liquid eye liner. Maybe you can use all your failed mascaras as liquid liners instead :).

    • Christine

      Wednesday, October 28, 2009

It’s probably easier to dip your eyeliner brush on the brush than the tube, otherwise you might get a whole lot of mess on your brush!

Let us know how you like Sexy Curves once you try it!

Not my favourite mascara, but I do like it. I find that it is pretty easy to build up if you are going for a rock-chick kind of look. Having said that, I am sure there are many others with which you can do the same. :-)

i love trying all the new/different drugstore mascara’s….I really did not like this one at all. It did nothing for me for volume or much length. It sits unloved in my stash :-(

this product kinda smells and I thought it was because I had it too long but I only bought it 2 1/2 weeks ago and I only used it a few times since then! BOO!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, October 28, 2009

What does it smell like? I already tossed mine (it’s gross to share mascara, so unfortunately, out it goes!) so I can’t smell it myself.

I love the non-waterproof mascara in the purple bottle! It’s one of the best mascaras I’ve tried (maybe even better than YSL effet faux cils). Lenghtens, curls, separates, gives volume, does not flake, does not dry out quickly. I find the waterproof one is not bad, but is too dry.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I wonder if there’s a big difference between the two, hm… Did the waterproof still give you length, curl, and volume?

ALL Rimmel mascaras suck if you ask me. Do not go to Rimmel for a mascara is my rule of thumb.

    Wednesday, October 28, 2009

i have the regular one and i love it! no clumps, lots of volume and i don’t have to use a lash curler! i have it on right now actually ;) it’s my favorite right now. i guess it really depends on the person with this mascara. it’s cheap so you don’t lose much money for just trying it out. give it shot! (for anyone who’s debating over getting it or not)

    Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I think the purple does a lot better in length and volume (I have both) but I already have naturally long lashes so it looks a little off on me. It really doesn’t add anything for the curl and flakes pretty bad so it’s not worth it either.

Oh no no NO! I’ve been using Maybelline’s Cil Definition for years. I was always surprised I couldn’t find any reviews for it, then I found out it’s called Define-A-Lash in English :) Apparently the reviews aren’t too good. Weird.
I also like HR Lash Queen Feline Black (good curl!) and am currently getting used to Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto.
Have you tried any mascara’s by HR, Christine?

    • Christine

      Thursday, October 29, 2009

Haha! How funny how different the names can be3.

HR? Is that an abbreviation and I’m just not remembering it? Haven’t heard of HR if it isn’t an abbreviation, LOL.

Helena Rubinstein… I think I just made up my own abbrevation. Sorry! :)

I DESPISE this mascara. The first time I used it, I ended up having to wipe the wand with a tissue just to see if there was ANY actual product on the wand because the formula was so dry and it didn’t even look or feel like I was putting anything on my lashes. It felt like I was just pushing them around with a rubber wand!

The waterproof and regular are TOTALLY different! I have both I ABSOLUTELY love the regular it is my fav, My mom gave me the waterproof and I HATE it! It is horrible I don’t know why the formulas are so different but try the regular one in the purple container it’s great!!

Very interesting, I might have to try the regular, but I’m still pretty hesitant after this one :(

I have this in the non waterproof version….just the purple bottle, and I loooove it. Sexy Curves and Rimmel Glam eyes are my two favorite mascaras. I recently bought last blast and would buy sexy curves over last blast any day. It just seems to really make my lashes full and seperates them really well….Im afraid to try the waterproof because I’m afraid it will be different…..Too bad you didn;t like it :(

    • Christine

Sounds like maybe I will have to give the regular version a try!

The regular Sexy Curves did wonders for my lashes, but the waterproof was awful. I could hardly get a 2nd coat on. I feel like this with a lot of Waterproof mascaras though. The non waterpoof versions work well for me, the waterproof shouldn’t even have the same name to make someone think it will be the same but waterproof.

Maybe I’ll try to the regular one next time!
