My Picks

• Most Overrated: Burt’s Bees–do not like this product at all! Super drying for me.
• Most Underrated: I don’t know if I can say Jack Black Lip Balm, because it’s probably getting to the point where there’s enough buzz on it that it’ll be an option for “overrated.”

Overrated: Burts Bees

Underrated: Vaseline

2. trilo

dude, aquaphor! it’s literally the best. super underrated.

3. blueraccoon

overrated: burts bees – I used to love this stuff, but as I’ve tried more and better lip balms, I don’t like it as much. It’s too waxy.
Underrated: I don’t know if Fresh counts as underrated, but I absolutely love it. It’s moisturizing and feels great on my lips, plus the tinted ones are perfect for a splash of color that’s not high-maintenance. But it is really pricey :(

4. I got a sample of jack black and loved it so much that I bought 2 full size tubes! It’s now my daytime lipbalm because of the SPF.

Overrated: I’d definitely agree about Burt’s Bees
Underrated: Most of the awesome boutique brands I try on Etsy (which are my night time lip balms because they lack SPF) are amazing. My favorite is Epically Epic lip balm.

5. Reasoner_

Overrated: Soft Lips. I find them super drying.
Underrated: Blistex. Not the most fashionable one, but it works.

6. Marissa

Are the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments considered lip balms? Because they’re definitely overrated. The EOS lip balms are overrated too. As for underrated, I would say Nivea.

7. Lauren

Underrated: Carmex. I know a lot of people hate it, and it DOES taste disgusting, but it literally saved my lips when I was on Accutane (extremely drying).

Overrated: Eos balm. It’s cute packaging, but I haven’t found one that really works all that well.

8. Avatar of Amy xamyx

Although I really like Burt’s Bees, my absolute *favorite* is Korres Lip Butters. They come in a pot, but I use a tool to avoid having to stick my fingers directly into the product. As for overrated, I can’t think of anything off-hand. Until I tried Korres, I found lip balm to be a basic necessity, and never gave it much thought, since *everything* I tried was basically the same. I haven’t tried anything else since, because I’ve found something I absolutely love.

9. Justine

Overrated: burts bees

Underrated: nivea’s line of lipbalms and korres lip butters!

10. Avatar of Ricky blauriche

overrated: most of them
underrated Labello/Niveo Hydrocare

11. Aelita

overrated -caemex, EOS
underrated-shea butter, cocoa butter-home made forever

12. over rated: definitely eos, I cringe everytime I hear someone say something good about them, they are absolutely terrible.

under rated: simple vaseline

13. Avatar of Nell NellRamey

Overrated: EOS for sure. I wanted to love it but it did nothing for my lips.

Underrated: Blixted Medicated Lip Ointment. The old school liquid kind. It doesn’t taste yummy but it’s what I end up going back to time and time again since high school. It just works for my lips.

14. I would say the most overrated is the EOS too. It just doesn’t moisturize my lips very well at all. As for the underrated, I would most definitely say Carmex! I’ve been using this for years, and I can definitely say it’s the only thing that keeps my lips completely moisturized throughout the summer & winter!

15. I find Burt’s Bees really drying too! I can’t really answer the question because I’ve yet to find anything that works for me. I have a couple of homemade recipes, and they’re the best I’ve come up with.

16. Michelle Young

Over-rated – Carmex
Under-rated – Lush lip service. Literally lasts for hours, even after eating and drinking. Love the stuff.

17. Danyal Ann Aligenuba

jack black changed their formula. beeswax :(

18. Averill Pessin

Over-rated: Fresh Sugar and Korres lip butters. Under-rated: Aquaphor.

19. Averill Pessin

Over-rated: Fresh Sugar and Korres lip butters. Under-rated: Aquaphor.

20. Heesoo Claire Koh

Over-rated (EOS) , Under- rated (Mayblline Baby Lips)

21. Dominique33

Most overrated : Crème de rose from Dior ( sticky, not effective )
Most underrated : Chanel Coco Shine Lip Balm ( very effective, smooth and soft )

22. Avatar of Alice AliceM

Overrated: The L’Occitane ones. I’ve read so many great reviews but they just leave my lips drier.
Underrated: Caudalie. When my lips are ok this works beautifully. When for some external reason they get drier I switch to Rosebud Salve. In state of calamity nothing is netter than bepanthene(I don’t know which is the equivalent in the USA)

23. Dana

Most Overrated: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. What a scam this stuff is. Feels great when it’s on, when it wears off your lips are still dry and chapped

Most Underrated: L’Occitane 100% Shea Butter, awesome stuff. I buy the mini tins

24. Avatar of tzwiggy t_zwiggy

I must have really weird lips because I disagree with most people here.

Overrated: JACK BLACK!!! OMFG, I don’t even have words for how much i hate that stuff! Three days after I started using it (applying twice daily) my lips were so cracked and dry that they were bleeding! I also hate Vaseline, Nivea, Labello, Blistex and Carmex crap. Makes my lips “addicted” and drier than they were to begin with. You know something is wrong when you have to reapply every 2-3 hours.

Underrated: OK, it’s not really underrated when so many people love it and talk about it, but the best thing for my lips is most definitely EOS. It’s actually able to keeps my lips soft for days after I use it! I also like Korres Lip Butters.

• eRiN

@t_zwiggy LOL I totally came here to say that same thing about Jack Black, but I also feel that way about the EOS ones xD

• @t_zwiggy That is sooo bizarre.. I wear JB to bed every night and it’s the only lip balm where my lips aren’t dry when I get up in the morning. So weird! I do agree with you on the Korres Lip Butters though!!

25. diamond_8806

Overrated: Rosebud Salve! I can honestly say it’s the worse balm I’ve ever tried! It doesn’t sink into the lips or moisturize at all. It doesn’t have any lasting power once applied to the lips either! It’s basically overpriced, pink Vaseline! Wish I could get that $7 back.

Underrated: Carmex (the original formula in the squeeze tube)! I love this stuff! It’s ridiculously affordable, super moisturizing, and last for hours on end on my lips. I love the way it keeps my lips so silky soft. I stop using this to check out the buzz of Rosebud Salve and came crawling back! Lol Never again! This is all I’ll ever use!

26. Alyssamerrick

Overrated: I totally agree with you. Burt Bee’s made my lips even more dry and red. Especially if it got on the skin around my lips. It took weeks for them to get back to normal.

Underrated: I suppose this isn’t even lip balm but I use Eucerin Aquaphor. It keeps my lips super hydrated and soft. I use it nearly every night! And it heals any cracks that appear also.

• Avatar of Barbara basia77

@Alyssamerrick They make an Aquaphor Lip balm. Probably just Aquaphor in a different tube.

• Avatar of Abbi AbbiPemberton

@Alyssamerrick aquaphor IS the most amazing product EVER! I didn’t even think to add that to my post! I use it on my lips at night as well as my cuticles and feet (then wear socks to bed) and in the morning my skin is healed and soft like a baby, good call!!!

27. diamond_8806

No matter how dry my lips get, this stuff can bring them back to silky softness. I stop using this to check out the buzz of Rosebud Salve and came crawling back! Never again! This is all I’ll ever use! I can’t sing it’s praises enough!

• @diamond_8806 Oh man, I totally forgot about the HUGE suckage factor on Rosebud Salve and should have added that to Overrated section in my post as well.

• Avatar of Michelle michou83

@diamond_8806 - Thank goodness I’m seeing so many responses to how awful Rosebud Salve is. It didn’t do anything good and I really disliked the smell on top of it all. Wish I could get my money back on that one too!

29. eRiN

Overrated: Lots, but Jack Black is one of them – sorry, but it’s overpriced and now everyone blogs about it all the time! Same goes for the FRESH ones, and the EOS ones are a nice price and come in cool flavors but are not that great IMO.

Underrated: OrangeThyme on Etsy. Ohmygodsogood.

30. Avatar of Emily 18thCenturyFox

OVERrated: I’m in in the itty bitty minority here but I can’t stand Jack Black. The taste makes me make a lemon squeezy face and my lips are NOT happy.
UNDERrated: Not sure, the stuff that works for me is pretty well popularized.

31. Avatar of Emily 18thCenturyFox

Oh and yes I will continue to pay for FRESH! Let them eat cake! Because I lurve that stuff.

• blueraccoon

@18thCenturyFox I love it too *g* I have all of them except the honey tint and the advanced therapy one, but those are next on my list!

32. Kate

Overrated: EoS. That stuff does absolutely nothing for me, yet the majority of beauty bloggers seem to love it. It just makes my lips more chapped the next day!

Underrated: One I really like that most people probably won’t even try is the CVS brand of cherry Chapstick – I think it’s called Chap-Block. Works great and is dirt cheap, so I’m willing to put up with the waxy feeling! Like you, though, my go-to is Jack Black.

33. Overrated: Carmex, Soft lips, Blistex, all the Fresh Sugar balms, korres lip butter (even though I do think they’re good, I just don’t think they live up to the hype), Mac lip conditioner (again, it’s good, just nothing special), the regular Burt’s Bees, too

Underrated: I don’t know if it’s necessarily underrated, but the Burt’s Bees Pomegranate is amazing. I also love Palmer’s Cocoa Butter balms and don’t hear those mentioned on blogs

34. yellowlantern

Overrated: Aveeno’s lipbalm and Softlips both of these formulas feel great when you first put it on, but they wear away in 30 minutes and I still get chapped lips after wearing it.

Underrated: I actually think plain, ole Chapstick (in the original formula) isn’t half bad though I know many people do not like it. It’s not the most hydrating balm I’ve ever used, but it is decent (I’d say it’s better than decent at preventing chapped lips) and the price is right. Jack Black is still my preference for lip balm when I need serious hydration though.

35. Avatar of Taylor Ms Fussy Britches

Overrated: Burt’s Bee’s I just don’t get the hype and they do more damage than good!

Underrated: Alba’s Coconut Cream Lip Balm Sooo think and creamy. I can apply it once and be good for hours! And my lips feel better after using it. Plus, in Western New York winter, this is my HG balm!!

36. Avatar of T Violet t_violet

Overrated: the Fresh Sugar lip treatments. Don’t do much for me and melts too easily.

Underrated: I like just plain Chapstick, especially for night. It’s waxy but that’s what helps seal moisture in and keeps my lips from drying out as I sleep. I also like Murad’s Pomegranate Lip Protector, smells and feels great.

37. Avatar of Marian Marian57

I think they’re all overrated. Thay make my lips even drier than they were to begin with.
Underrated: Vaseline and Aquaphor.

• Avatar of Barbara basia77

@Marian57 Have to agree! Vaseline and Aquaphor are the best. I do like Neosporin (in the white pot, NOT the tube with sunscreen) for nighttime. Can’t use anything with sunscreen.

38. KK

Overrated: Burt’s Bees (does nothing for me)

Underrated: Badger Balm (love the Sweet Orange). Works well, cute packaging, lots of product in the tube, and fun flavors to choose from. I use it religiously before bed every night and my lips are always in great condition (and I spend tons of time outdoors, playing softball 3 nights a week and running outdoors 6 days a week).

39. fraylling

Underrated: I’ve only used on lip balm for years, it’s Protect Me Beeswax Lip Balm by Honey and Herbs, I love it, since I found it on a trip to New Zealand I’ve never once had a problem with dry lips, which had been causing me problems for years, it’s waxy enough that it doesn’t seem to disappear from my lips straight away, but still very very moisturising, and it’s SPF 15, which is always nice. Now I order a dozen or so of them around once a year and often pass them out to family and friends as well.

Overrated: Anything that isn’t the above :) but seriously… I tried Burt’s Bees recently and found it far too waxy and not really moisturising at all, so I’d have to go with that.

40. Underrated: Jack Black can’t possibly be underrated, but it’s my HG lip balm. Anything else pales in comparison. Ooohh, I just thought of another one that is almost as good.. Korres Lip Butter is pretty darn good and you can also buy the tinted versions.
Overrated: Can remember the exact name, but the MAC tinted lip balm in the flat round pan.. I tossed it in the garbage.

41. Lauren McCarthy

Over-rated- anything by Fresh Sugar
Under-rated- Hurraw

42. Avatar of Quinctia Quinctia

Overrated…I think I have to go with EOS, too. I’m not a big lip balm wearer, but I took a trip in March as I was getting over a pretty bad cold. My liquids bag had a hole in it, and I dropped my Jack Black on the floor in the airport. So, I’m in a Walmart in the middle of nowhere, this one didn’t even stock any ALBA products…the best looking thing was Eos. It didn’t help. My lips were sad. :(

43. AW

Overrated: Blistex& Chapstick. I bought one a week ago because a lot of people told me they’re good, but i went “the heck” 10 minutes after application. ’twas a stick of wax.

Underrated: Burts Bees REJUVENATING lip balm. This one works wonders, and so much much much better than the one everyone’s talking about (the original). The only flaw it has is that it doesn’t have spf protection.

Also worth mentioning:
Neutrogrna HydroShine– it’s a lip gloss but it’s so moisturizing that i use it as a lip balm sometimes. it also has spf 20& a nice and light fragrance.

44. polishedmom

Overrated: Burts Bees original. I am sorry but I do NOT like this chapstick whatsoever! It is too thick, it doesn’t ‘absorb’ into my lips but just sits there, getting a weird texture.

Underrated: Julep’s Daylight Defense!!! Omfg I got this chapstick a few months back in one of my boxes and I cannot stop using it, and loving it! It keeps my lips super soft, moisturized, and all w/o being too waxy or greasy. Absolutely love, love, loooove this chapstick!

45. DuchessCadbury

Overrated Blixtex, Chapstick, Carmax, Burts Bees and Jack Black. I. Hate. It. It’s drying and and the wax never really settles.

Underrated Although I live by Chanel’s Hydra+Max, Maybelline’s Baby Lips is really doing wonders for my lips.

• Avatar of Mirian Vermeulen MIRIANV

@DuchessCadbury omg this woman at my work wears baby lips and goes through a tube every other week, I SWEAR. she applies it constantly in meetings like she has OCD. it’s the weirdest thing.

• DuchessCadbury

@MIRIANV I understand. They’re so smooth…it’s addictive. But I only like the clear one. The colored ones are a little wonky in my opinion.

46. Avatar of Melanie rawrmels

i have tired several balms because of accutane…

underrated: thebalm that healed and saved my lips was AQUAPHOR! it has multiple uses and works great for tattoos…

overrated & extremely over hyped: korres lip butters, carmex, burt bees(cracked my lips), fresh sugar lips(pricey), eos, rosebud salve(smells horrid), neosporin lip treatment, any chapstick product, nivea, i have more but just can’t remember.

47. lisasososweet

BUDDHA BALM is the most underrated lip balm out their. They are a natural, yet hip/cool brand that has amazing flavors and it last oh so long. Once you try BUDDHA BALM you will ditch all the others. Especially Burts Bees which is owned by Clorox!!!

48. Avatar of Melanie rawrmels

i have tired several balms because of accutane…

underrated: the only product that healed and saved my lips was AQUAPHOR! it has multiple uses and works great for new tattoos…

overrated & extremely over hyped: korres lip butters, carmex, burt bees(cracked my lips), fresh sugar lips(pricey), eos, rosebud salve(smells horrid), neosporin lip treatment, any chapstick product, nivea, i have more but just can’t remember.

49. Adelita

Most Overrated:
» EOS & Burt’s Bees. Both are too waxy and did nothing to my super chapped & dry lips *correction* well, it actually did something, add a layer of thick, waxy, unpleasant feeling.

Most Underrated:
» This is not a lip balm, but I like what La Roche-Posay Cicaplast did to my lips. Hmmm… it’s like the Clinique Moisture Surge to my llips, it keeps my lips hydrated but I can’t feel the product because it absorbs pretty nicely with very minimal residue, unlike lip balm. I actually put this before I put my lip balm, I use this as a “lip serum”. :)

PS: My favorite lip balm is Carmex but it’s not a an underrated product. I know it tastes horrible like avaporub, but it did miracle to my extremely sensitive, chapped, very dry lips.

50. casey23

It is kind of a sick relationship that I have with it, but i feel Fresh sugar lips (in any kind) is very very veeery overrated. It practically does nothing to my lips, just sits there. But I just love them and I don’t know the reason!! (Probably the perfect advertising)

Blistex med plus is a god send on the other hand!!! Everyone with severe choped up lips should definitely try, nothing would heal my very corrupted lips like that.

51. ZulaikhaMuddassir

over rated- burts bees and the body shop lip balms…they stink and are gooey.burts bees just stings my lips and does nothing else.
under rated- nivea chapstick is great for everyday wear and the body shop lip butters! do try them they are amazing! i have been using them since i was 14 and im 24 this year..so 10yrs that is. apply it at night and leave it on and in the morning scrub ur lips with some sugar. its so amazing it leaves my lips soo soft n silky and clean.

52. Ravn94

Most Overrated:I’m not sure, actually, I don’t think I’ve really ever tried any that were a total miss.
Most Underrated: Carmex. It works brilliantly for me I apply every evening, and before lipsticks, and it keeps my lips hydrated the whole day. I have very dry lips, two days without any lip balm, even in summer, and they’re cracking.

53. Avatar of Mirian Vermeulen MIRIANV

overrated: i hate to say this…but jackblack. I want to love it, i do, but it just doesn’t moisturize or sooth at all. After wearing it my lips crack and peel even worse. When i put it on it’s just a weird layer that acts like a film. I like it when my balms soothe.

underrated: Aquafina lip balms. I wouldn’t normally pick these, but i’ve had a tube and i always seem to go back to it after i get frustrated with other brands. it very soft, but doesn’t feel waxy or like a film. i love it. http://www.aquafinaskincare.com/product_center.asp?dept_id=1001

54. Overrated: Going to agree with you on Burt’s Bees. It’s just not that great.

Underrated: Dr. Dobb’s Peppermint Tingle. Hands down the most amazing balm I have ever tried. Tried it randomly one day from my school’s co-op and I got hooked.

55. Overrated: eos lipbalm. They’re just terrible. So waxy and not nearly melt-y enough. It felt like it actually dried out my lips more instead of moisturizing them. Also, the sugar lips ones Sephora gives out for birthdays aren’t that great, but at least they smell good and aren’t waxy like eos.
Underrated: Nivea lip balm – all three types that I’ve tried (original, milk and honey, and the tinted kiss of cherry one) have been great.

56. Cheryl

Overrated: Chapstick, does nothing for me.

Underrated: Sugar Rose tint lip conditioner, I love the stuff. Makes my lips so soft.

• Avatar of Alison Alison Cole

I DESPISE chapstick. It actually makes my lips WORSE. Plus it smells like a…. like a… like a.. *hates it*

57. Avatar of Alison Alison Cole

I find Burt’s Bees lip balm drying too. My lips feel better for a tiny while, and then get drier and drier as I use it, so I actually have to leave time to wait for my lips to heal and not use anything for a while.

58. Avatar of Maria Paola MariaPaolaTobarRangel

over rated: jack black, i like jack black but only the mint one! the vanilla lavander one and the tangerine one taste horrible! i cant stand them
underrated: the bath and body shop ones, they come in a squeeze tube taste great and super moisturizing

59. Claire B

Overrated: Rosebud Salve–it does absolutely nothing for me!

Underrated: I’ve become absolutely addicted to the Lush lip balms (particularly Honey Trap for the smell). I wish the packaging was a bit better (mine get a little melty in my bag in the summer) but overall they’ve done the most for my lips.

60. Avatar of Abbi AbbiPemberton

Overrated, Burts bees, and I used to LOVE it, used it for years cause I liked the tingle and smell but lately it just sits on top of my lips and doesn’t moisturize at all. I also like the sugar lip products a lot but not for the price.

Underrated, I’ve fallen in love with the Maybeline baby lips, I use the non tinted one mostly it moisturizes amazingly, is great under other products, actually sinks in instead of sitting on top, no offensive smell or taste, and the best thing is the price and quantity just can’t be beat. I’m all about my HE products when they’re worth it but sometimes once in awhile a drugstore product is the BEST!!

61. Bridget

Most overrated: I would have to say Jack Black, I do like it but I don’t feel like it’s worth the raving it gets. I’ve only used the mint one and I find it sometimes feels more irritating than soothing.
Most underrated: By far I have to say the LipJao lip balm. I haven’t heard anyone talk about it really, but it truly is the most amazing lip balm I’ve ever used, so smooth and soothing, and I can put it on once and my lips are hydrated all day long. I recently went on accutane so my lips are extremely cracked and dry (as well as my entire face… ew) and this lip balm changed the way lips felt after one swipe. I cannot say enough good things about it.

62. Amyaryn

Most Overrated: Dont like Lush lip balms, waaay too stiff and waxy- completly pointless and non moisturizing, also dont like EOS for the same reason. Cute packaging is often a wolf in sheeps clothing!
Most Underrated- Blistex always doesgood by my lips, also love soft lips although the wear time on soft lips isnt great.

• casey23

@Amyaryn Oh at last someone else said Blistex too!! I was starting to think that Blistex is just my imagination, lol! Have you tried medplus? It is not for everyday use, but for the days when you have very chopped, dried, sensitive lips, it just soothes it in a night!!

63. MultiOrpington

Overrated: EOS. Waxy.
Underrated: ROC or Avon.

64. Ana

Overrated: EOS, Jack Black, Underrated: Chapstick, Beauty Rush (by Victoria’s Secret) lip balms

65. Overrated: Jouer lip enhancer. It’s a lovely gloss, but I’ve found other balms that work well for moisturizing at night.

Underrated: I adore Lush’s Honey Trap lip balm. I can still feel it on my lips after I shower in the morning, and I put it on every night! My lips haven’t been chapped since I bought it, though I can understand some people’s issues with the texture. It can be a little hard to work with until you warm it up a bit!

66. oh hayy im a guest

Overrated: Burt’s Bees, Chapstick, Rosebud Salve
Burt’s Bees made my lips feel soft while it was on my lips and shortly after I wiped it off (to eat or something), but it never gave my lips lasting hydration. Chapstick was ok, but not very moisturizing. Rosebud Salve felt gross and just sat on my lips, and it wasn’t hydrating at all.

Underrated: Acure Organics Mint + Dark Chocolate lip balm
It’s organic and it makes my lips feel really soft! It takes the whole night to sink in (as do most lip balms), but it gives my lips lasting hydration. The chocolate is not very detectable (and only by smell), but the mintiness is definitely there. You can get it at Whole Foods for $3.99.

67. Kara

Overrated: EOS. Cute packaging, lovely smell but for me personally, that’s all it was. My lips became drier than usual and they got a lot of bumps on them too, all of which disappeared when I stopped using it.

68. Amanda

Overrated: chapstick.

Underrated: Lucas’s Paw Paw Ointment. Well, it’s underrated in the states anyway. Almost every woman in Australia has a tube of this stuff in her handbag. It’s absolutely amazing. Despite not technically being a lip balm, it’s the only thing that keeps my very dry lips hydrated.

69. Diana Wolczek-Evans

Overrated: Fresh Sugar. It’s a nice balm, but not enough to justify the price.

Underrated: Pangea Organics lip balm. Glides on smoothly, no stickiness, and soothed my lips when I had an allergic reaction to another lip product.

Overrated: EOS. It doesn’t even make a difference whether I put it on or not. I just play with it like a regular ball.
Underrated: The Body Shop chocolate lip butter OMG. Forget about the scent, this stuff actually works and makes my lips so smooth and ‘kissable’ for a day or two after I put it on, say, at night or even just keep it on in the daytime. But the scent is really nice, reminds me of Lindt (or was it Lindor) milk chocolates.

71. Overrated: EOS and the The Body Shop lip butters in the little jars really do nothing for me. I know others love the TBS lip butters, but they do nothing for me. The cacao butter one in stick form is amazing though.Underrated: Lucy Minerals Ambrosia Lip Dip. Never heard anyone talk about this product ever. Maybe because as far as I know you have to order it online to get it. It’s amazing though and you really should check out Lucy Minerals.
