Look: Tropical Green & Teal with Blue Sorcery Mineralize Eyeshadow

Date: November 11, 2009 - Posted in: Blue, Green, Looks, Teal

No matter what I try or how many times I try it, mineralize eyeshadows and I just don’t get along. They frustrate me, and using one means I’m adding (wasting) another 15-20 minutes to my makeup routine that really feels unnecessary. I guess it is just not meant to be! I just find that they’re more work than I really want to do for an eyeshadow.I could have just eliminated Blue Sorcery and used Shimmermoss and been a happy camper!

My major annoyances/frustrations were the dusty fall out and the fact that the color faded before I even finished the application. Oh, well — I know there are lovers and haters of mineralize eyeshadows, I just know which side I’m on, even though I want to love them. :P

Oh yeah, and P.S.?  Wet hair never looks very good in photos.  I need to remember to make sure my hair is dry before I take photos in the future!  (That was a total note-to-self.)

(And for your reference, I have tried mineralize eyeshadows from every batch since their inception; I have tried a multitude of bases–UDPP, paint pots, TFSI, CCBs, pigments; and I have tried a multitude of different wetting agents–mixing medium, Fix+, water.)

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral beige base), Sour Lemon eyeshadow (chartreuse green), Blue Sorcery mineralize eyeshadow (teal), Deep Truth eyeshadow (dark blue), Prussian eyeshadow (matte, dark blue), Ricepaper eyeshadow (soft beige highlighter), NARS Blue Bayou Eyeliner Stylo (medium blue), Urban Decay Graffiti 24/7 Liner (green), Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: MAC Spaced Out blush (peachy-pink), Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer (bronze highlighter)
  • Face: Kiehl’s Tinted Moisturizer
  • Lips: Guerlain Gems Rouge G Lipstick (pinky coral), MAC Young Thing lipglass (creamy nude)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Blue Sorcery = Shimmermoss; Spaced Out = Peachykeen; Young Thing = C-Thru

Directions: Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. On the inner lid, pack Sour Lemon eyeshadow on using the 239. Apply Blue Sorcery eyeshadow to the middle and outer portions of the lid. Darken crease with Deep Truth eyeshadow using the 226, then deepen with Prussian eyeshadow with the 219. Sweep Ricepaper eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Urban Decay Graffiti Liner on lower lash line, NARS Blue Bayou Eyeliner Stilo on the upper lash line, and apply Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Spaced Out blush using the 129, then highlight with Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 188. Apply Guerlain Gems lipstick to lips, and then top with Young Thing lipglass for color and shine.

    GORGEOUS!
Hey, the wet hair look doesn’t look half-bad on you (in the picture at least). ;)
The lip combo is so pretty! I always love your lip creations.

    The NARS liner looks fab!

      Thanks, Maggie!

Haha! I always look at myself in the mirror, and I’m like, “All right, this is good enough!” but then the hair looks way worse in photos than in person.

Oh wow! This reminds me of summertime *sigh*

Thanks, Anne! I live in California, so sometimes I forget that it’s totally winter elsewhere, LOL.

I’ve always found the mineralize eye shadow color payoff to suck as well. I was looking at Blue Sorcery but I’m glad that you let me know that I don’t need to buy it since the payoff (or lack) would drive me crazy. I think your look is nice, though! I have Shimmermoss, is it that close?

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

I definitely think Shimmermoss is close enough to work :) Thanks!

To me(and on me NC45/50), Blue Sorcery swatched exactly like Teal pigment. And I mean, exactly the same, to the point that I asked the MUA about it.

They’re quite similar for sure :)

This is a really great look!!! Makes me want to buy Gems now :) And I hear you on the mineralize eyeshadows! I’m not a fan either…

Thanks, Andrea! Someone needs to find a Gems dupe, LOL.

Great combo! It’s too bad you don’t like mineral eye shadows. I like them, not all of them though. I used mine over UDPP and Painterly Paint Pot. I use a MAC 228 to apply it (that I’ve fallen in love with it!). I also apply my foundation after I do my eye makeup, so the fall out is gone :)

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Thanks, Christy! I’ve tried it over the UDPP & PP combo to no real success. I apply my foundation after eyeshadow (that’s my typical method), but it still continues to have fall out after that, too :(

        Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Aww, that’s awful :( I don’t get much fall out during the day when I use mineral shadows. Maybe I’m in a more humid climate?

No idea. I know these work amazing on some… just not on me (unfortunately!). It’s just a wee bit annoying!

Christine this is beautiful, you look gorgeous with this makeup. I like the shades and the blending is perfect. You should definitely try using these shades more often.Btw did I told you that your smile is beautiful? :)

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

      Thank you so much, Tavia!

I used to do these shades *all* the time (I swear, I have done this color scheme probably a dozen times… with a dozen different shades, ha!), but they’re not really school appropriate!

      :)

Beautiful look, as always, Christine! And omg, that blue eyeliner! I hope you will review it soon because it’s gorgeous and I’m not familiar with it (don’t know much about NARS beyond their blushes). I keep getting thisclose to buying Gems, but I have been sensible so far. It’s like my perfect lipstick color. But…I could get three nice-if-not-perfect MAC lipsticks for that, and I really can’t afford a random $45 haul. Sigh. I hope it sells out everywhere soon so the decision can be made for me! :P

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

      Thanks, Daphne!

I definitely will be. I can tell you it STAINS which is a little annoying, though.

Put it on your holiday/birthday/anniversary/special occasion wish list :)

        Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Oooh. Our anniversary IS coming up. John might scoff at buying me a $45 lipstick though, lol. If I point out to him that the case is like jewelry…;)

Chartreuse/teal/blue seem to love you, Christine! I wish I had those colors so I could try this look myself. I’m happy to see more looks lately, I always look forward to those :)
I think your hair looks fine by the way! It’s really growing fast, isn’t it?

(P.S.: Could you maybe do a quad with Deep Truth in it? Thanks!)

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

      Thanks, Roxanne! :)

LOL, it’s just a little more blah than it usually is (which is still kind of on the blah side, but whatev!). I don’t know – it always looks better in person than in photos (I think all the frizz is captured so nicely on camera, ha!).

I haven’t cut my hair since DECEMBER. As in you know, 2008. Soo…. I don’t know. Feels like it’s been growing an eternity! I hate running errands, and getting a hair cut is right up there with going to the post office, which is why I’m so bad about getting my hair cut. (Luckily, my hair is forgiving and I don’t have split ends!)

      I will try!

      • Roxanne

        Wednesday, November 11, 2009

I honestly don’t think it looks blah! It’s so thick and has a gorgeous dark color!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been a year since you’ve had your hair cut short (can’t believe I’ve been coming here for over a year either!). I had my hair cut short (chin-length) in April last year and it’s not even the same length as yours! But I don’t fuss, I’ve had short hair all my life so I’m totally happy with this length :)

I totally hate going to the post office too. Our mailman never rings our doorbell so all my packages get sent to the post office. It drives me insane!

Anyway, hope you do more looks in the future :)

        • Christine

          Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Aww, thanks :) Sometimes I consider adding highlights or dying my hair, but then it took me so many years to get my natural color… so then I back out, lol!

I had long hair since age 5 (my mom cut it SUPER short and I cried!) until last December. I decided I prefer longer hair over shorter hair!

OMG, my mail man used to throw packages at our door! I’d hear this big *THUD* and know mail was here! The new one rings the doorbell three times in a row and runs away.

          • Roxanne

            Wednesday, November 11, 2009

I don’t think you should do anything to your hair! Most natural hair colors are cold and sort of greyish (a little bit of every color), so to have a color so rich and deep is such a blessing!

My hair is dyed in my own color, just a warmer tone. It’s a dark brownish color and actually has the sheen of my original color (don’t know if you can picture it).

That sounds so annoying! I heard you once lost a package because it was delivered to the wrong door? It’s so frustrating because I stay at home to make sure I don’t miss him, but then when I rush to the door, he mysteriously vanishes! I feel like Wile E. Coyote chasing Road Runner or something.

            • Christine

              Thursday, November 12, 2009

              Aw, thanks, Roxanne! :)

I swear, California warmed up my hair. It was so blah when I was a kid.

I did! It shipped to another unit in my complex, and I have no idea what happened to it. The people there didn’t have it (and they’ve given me other packages in the past), the office didn’t… :( They re-shipped, but they were out of stock of the shoes I wanted THE MOST.

I love how many FOTDs we’ve been seeing this week! You look amazing, and this colour combination is fabulous (Blue Bayou is totally going on my wishlist.) The look makes me miss summer, though :P

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Don’t get too used to it, LOL. The mood just struck yesterday (or maybe it was just a way to procrastinate…) :P

      Thank you!

I love Blue Sorcery, I think it is one of the best colours in the holiday collection. These colours look great with your complexion. MAC Mineralize eyeshadows are a bit of a pain, some works for me and some doesn’t. It is too bad that none of them worked for you, because there are some very beautiful mineralized eyeshadows out there. It is weird that the colour faded on your skin so quickly. Have you tried the MAC greasepaint sticks for the mineral eyeshadows? I tried the V and B for Devil May Care and Blue Sorcery, I find that they are quite effective for me.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Thanks for the greasepaint tip, Amy! I might try that next, but we’ll see. Probably not for awhile, LOL! (I’d rather be less frustrated, haha.)

They’re always pretty, and they always sucker me in with how beautiful they swatch. Then I use them, and I get so sad!

try visene eyedrops and mix it with mineral eyeshadow. it intensifies the color and worked for me.

    • Christine

      Thursday, November 12, 2009

I personally prefer using mixing medium, but I just don’t find it keeps the color bright all day long!
