IMATS Pasadena 2009

IMATS Pasadena 2011

This weekend is IMATS in Pasadena, California, and while I may not be there physically, I’m so there in spirit!  I thought it would be fun to compile a list of tips, tricks, favorites, and the like to help make your IMATS trip an enjoyable one.  Feel free to add your own tips on Twitter with either #IMATStips or #IMATS.  I know I’ll be following to see some of my favorites tweet from the show.
Aspiring makeup artists and artists, ProCharts is having a special deal for IMATS online since they won’t be at the show in person.   Their face charts will be £14.00/$22.83 for 1 pad and £25/$40.77 for a pack of 2, plus free shipping when you use the code IMATS.  The deal is valid from June 24th through June 30th.

My Must-Haves & Tips

  • Get there REALLY early or be prepared to wait in a massive line!
  • Have a game plan; it really is that serious.  IMATS is totally fun and you can walk around at your leisure, but if there are certain products you have your heart set on, make buying a priority and then enjoy yourself.
  • Lists are good–several exhibitors are so popular that spending time shopping at the show means longer lines and a higher likelihood of products selling out.  Make Up For Ever is one of the most popular booths, and even though we had gone there first with a list, the wait was over 45 minutes.  I know brands like MUFE do not restock during the show; once they’re out, they’re out.  OCC also sells out of certain shades of Lip Tars quite quickly!
  • Be polite & courteous, as everyone tries to accommodate the crowds, ring customers up in a timely fashion, and just generally trying to manage what is a very high energy and fun show.
  • Cash can save you time rather than using credit/debit, but a lot of vendors definitely take credit/debit if you’re uncomfortable carrying a lot of cash (like I am!).
  • Brands to check out at the show:  Clarisonic, Inglot, Make Up For Ever, NYX, OCC, Stila, and Sugarpill (Full exhibitor list here.)  Each of the links to the brand will take you to any reviews/posts I’ve done regarding them.   Also, if a brand isn’t doing anything special for the show, I’d keep moving.  You can buy at full price any time!

Twitter Tips

    Why aren’t you going christine?

  2. Alexis

I went last year and here are some of my tips
-If you have your heart set on something especially if it is at a main booth to head there first along with any other priority booths.
-Eat a good breakfast! You will get hungry after all that walking and standing in line.
-If you can take or friend or someone to play spot saver while you leave to use the restroom or to send them off to get some nachos and eat shamelessly while in line for MUFE (maybe that was just me)
-Enjoy the actual event don’t be too bummed out because something was sold out instead venture off and discover new brands.
-Take a messenger/cross body bag. It won’t be bothersome like a shoulder purse and won’t get in the way.
-Take a camera to document your experience!

    Love your blog so much!

I see that tickets for Saturday are sold out. :c
Does anyone know if vendors restock for Sunday or is Saturday the best day for shopping?

  4. IMATS Toronto is much much smaller, not that they don’t have the space to grow. I enjoy it.

Your list of “Brands to check out at the show” show be brands to check out first as they will be popular. ^_^

  5. Lilly

This is going to be my first time going to IMATS, my first booth will be INGLOT and clarisonic, MAC and OCC second. So excited!!

  6. If you’re thinking of going to the classes/seminars, have a sketchbook on hand. You’ll be able to take notes in it and do swatches on the papers when you’re shopping for products at IMATS. :)

  7. I went in 2009 (didn’t see any famous people, boo) and had so much fun! I regret not bringing my camera.

  8. Ash

Wear comfortable shoes and hydrate! I go to SO many trade shows where women are limping around in heels, there is ZERO padding under trade show flooring and most of the time its just rolled over concrete. Make a list and keep your show floor map handy.

    • This is one lesson I have learned that if I’m going to be standing all day, I’m not even going to pretend like heels are a good idea.

  9. Keyonna

I’m new to the whole makeup scene. This sounds so exciting, I wish I knew about it sooner. I will be looking forward to going in 2012 with some girlfriends!!! :)

  10. Tiffany

So what time does anyone plan to go

  11. I’m going! I have my list made up and color coded for priority items! I’m so excited!

  12. Will clarisonic have a discount?? If so I’m heading there RIGHT after inglot!!!

  13. Alright then – I’m rather new at developing an excessive addiction to cosmetics and now everything is jumping out at me pretty much. Now, these might be some goofy n00b questions, but I’m gonna ask anyway =p Do you have be be a Makeup Artist to go to these, or can anyone go? Does this type of event happen in other areas – or are there similar type events that happen in other areas? I live in WI. Even though Milwaukee is deemed “city of festivals,” or so I’m told anyway, I don’t know if anything like this happens here. I’m still kind of new to living here and still learning about what all goes on.

  14. Mabeline

I just discovered Dex New York Cosmetics and met Dex who is the founder and creator of this amazing brand of mineral make-up. I was lucky to have Dex do my makeup and I have never felt so beautiful. I literally looked “red carpet” quality. I was totally sold on his mineral glow and tinted hydrator. The tinted hydrator gave my face that hollywood glowy skin without tons of foundation. Anyway, he will be there at Naimies booth doing demos and selling his brand. He will only be there on Saturday because he’s doing the BET awards on Sunday. You’ve got to see his stuff and catch a demo (or be lucky to have him do a demo on you!). Tell him Mabeline says hi! :)

  15. Susan

I went last year and the best deal I got was my clarisonic for $100. I only got that and Eve Pearl’s salmon concealer. Other than that I didn’t get except for a few small thing, brush roll, brush cleaner.
The event was sooo packed and it was impossible to get around. I will not be going this year. I think going once is more than enough.
If you guys go be prepared for lines to get in and at the vendors. It gets CROWDED!

  16. Jazz

I want to go , but its not really financially feasible for me to fly to LA for some makeup…flights+hotel+car- at least 1k that I dont have. Maybe next year.

  17. love following you!

  18. Ivette

it’s probably already too late for this, butttt there will probably be LOTS and LOTS of traffic, because the Gold Cup final (soccer) is going to be in Pasadena the 25th, which is today, and i totally should’ve posted this like when this post was up. lol
