Coastal Scents Ultra Shimmer 88 Eyeshadow Palette Review, Swatches, Photos

Posted in: Coastal Scents, Eye Products, Eyeshadows, Makeup Palettes, Product Photos/Swatches

(After swatching those, I wanted to do a look using those colors, LOL!)

Coastal Scents Ultra Shimmer 88 Eyeshadow Palette ($24.95) is very similar to the 88 Piece Makeup Palette ($21.95), with the major difference being these are full of high shimmer. I only swatched a few random colors, so that I could test (and you could see) the pigmentation and the level of shimmer, because the colors are exactly the same as the original 88 Makeup Palette.

All the raves from before still apply, because these shadows are smooth in texture and rich in color pay off. There’s no down side, no reason to poo-poo them in the least bit. For $25, it is, indeed, a beauty bargain. Regardless of whether or not you’re on a budget, I definitely recommend you check out either or both of these palettes. They’re well worth their price tags, and sometimes it’s good to be know you can get high quality products for less than $30. It won’t stop me from buying makeup from other, more expensive brands, but now I can set the bar higher for those brands to really wow me. For those on a budget, these are truly worth every hard-earned penny you spend. I can’t imagine anyone not being both impressed and excited to play with these palettes!

Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Mineral Oil, Kaolin, Titanium Dioxide, Magnesium Stearate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Lanolin, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, BHT. May contain: Mica and titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Violet, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide, Chrome Oxide Greens, Chrome Hydroxide Green, FD&C Red No.40 AlLake, FD&C Yellow No.5 Al Lake, FD&C blue No.1 Al Lake.

Oh blimey, I’m gonna need this palette as well. Got the matte one a week back and am super-satisfied. The shimmer one looks equally stunning!

The shimmer is really fantastic! :) I am glad you like your matte one!

Yes, they look the same. Coastal Scents is basically a distributor/wholesaler for a lot of products, so I wouldn’t be surprised if these were the same.

I remember for a long time people called it the ORRA palette.

Christine which palette do you like better, the shimmer one or regular one?

    • Asta

      Sunday, January 25, 2009

You need both. The shimmer makes the colors slightly different. Just get them!

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

To be honest, they’re both different. If you wear a lot of shimmers, go for the shimmer. If you don’t have enough non-shimmers, the regular version is nice.

Hi Christine is there any coupon codes for coastalscents?

    • heavenleiblu

      Sunday, January 25, 2009

If you go to the coastal Scents website and sign up for their newsletter, they will send you sale notifications. I’ve never noticed a code, but but when they have a sale, the sale price is automatically adjusted when you put an item in your cart.

I have the matte palette, but these swatches make me wanna cave and get the shimmer one, too.

Have you tried the neutral palette? I had it and liked it on myself, enough, but I did some bridal work today and used it exclusively on the bride’s eyes, and let me tell you, it was awesome the bride was beaming and she love love loved it.

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

I haven’t tried the neutral palette – I just got these two palettes, as well as a blush palette and some of the liners.

    Sunday, January 25, 2009

Do you know of any sites that dupe Coastal Scents and MAC/other brands of eye shadows? I’m almost tempted to get this, but I would like to get bigger sizes of the colors I use a lot if that is the case :)

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

      Hi Vanessa,

I do not know of any off hand, unfortunately! :(

  13. Elizabeth

    Sunday, January 25, 2009

I’m also wondering which one you would suggest–the shimmer or matte???

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

Depends on what you don’t have or what you prefer to use. The shimmer one is very nice, but ALL of them have shimmer, whereas the other palette is a mixture of matte to semi matte to subtle shimmer.

  14. Dani

    Sunday, January 25, 2009

Do these have high pigmentation? They look so beautiful! I think I want this! =)

    • Asta

      Sunday, January 25, 2009

Yes they do. You want it.

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

      Yes, they do!

  15. LUC1

    Sunday, January 25, 2009

YEAH CHRISTINE! I WANT TO KNOW WHICH PALETTE WOULD YOU SUGGEST
    SHIMMER OR MATTE??

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

It depends on what you need. If you wear a lot of frosty shadows or you don’t have enough, the shimmer one is probably more up your alley.

Just 22?? It’s like a joke for such a fab palette.

    Monday, January 26, 2009

Have you tried the 120 pro palette? It’s supposed to be similar in a way, I bought that one first. I’m going to get this palette too then I can compare.

    Monday, January 26, 2009

i like this palette very much!

  19. Chica

    Monday, January 26, 2009

I look at this sometimes and wonder if I need that many more eyeshadows LOL :)
I’m just completing my bridal make up course though and a whole bunch of colours in one easy to transport palette would be awesome!
Does anyone know if all the colours are eyesafe?

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

LOL! I don’t really know, but they’re selling it as an eyeshadow palette, so it seems like it better be eye safe if that’s the case…

  20. Sash

    Monday, January 26, 2009

OMFG! The price is right! Must have!

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

Yeah, the price can’t be beat!

  21. Sash

    Monday, January 26, 2009

Which do you prefer, the Coastal Scents Ultra Shimmer 88 Eyeshadow or the previous one?

I so wanna get it right now. I hope you do a look on either very soon! Or, did you?

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

Just depends on what you want. Shimmer is ALL shimmer shadows, whereas the other one has a combination of matte and lightly shimmered ones.

  22. Sash

    Monday, January 26, 2009

I just tried to order, and everything is approximately $50+ based on shipping preference!!!!

    Monday, January 26, 2009

I have the 88 shimmer palette and dislike it. Yes, the colors are well pigmented but most are very chalky and hard to use. They dont seem to blend well.

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

Interesting! I tried some preliminarily and didn’t have that issue luckily!

        Saturday, January 31, 2009

I think I was using the wrong primer. I started using it with UDPP but changed then with the too faced eyeshadow insurace and they look BETTER!! I kind of like it know!!

        • Christine

          Saturday, January 31, 2009

YAY! I’m so happy to hear this, Candy!

  24. Ariana

    Tuesday, January 27, 2009

for those of your out there that are still debating on whether or not to buy this… GET IT NOW!

I bought it about a week ago just thinking it was worth the $25 even if it sucked.

To my surprise these are all really high quality shadows! I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I open the palette – don’t know which to use!

Just make sure you have a strong base like Soft Ochre Paint Pot down first and these colors will come out strong and vibrant.

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

I’m so glad you’re liking it, Ariana! YAY!

  25. LUC1

    Wednesday, January 28, 2009

WELL CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHICH PALETTE IS BETTER SHIMMER OR MATTE, SO I CAN BUY ONE ALREADY!!!

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

What are you looking to use it for? If you have a lot of shadows, you could just get the shimmery one probably…

  26. knittingthrough

    Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Oh God! How can I decide if I should buy the shimmer or the matte one? (and no, I do not want 2)

I really want to branch out of my safe colours (in my case browns, violets and metallic greys) and never know which colours to buy and try. This (or the other) palette would be a great way of trying out a lot of colours in the safety of my home…

    • Christine

      Thursday, January 29, 2009

If you have shimmery bases, you could get the regular one. It’s hard to tone down the shimmer in the shimmer palette!

  27. jennss

    Wednesday, February 25, 2009

I’ve read about a lot of constroversy over these palettes. Do you beleive they are safe to use? Have you had any issues? Many thanks.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, February 25, 2009

      Hi Jennss,

I have not had any issues with the palette, but I do not have any specific safety information on it either.

    Thursday, March 5, 2009

I was a little skeptical of these paletts, as far as color pay off goes, but I think i might give them a try after reading all the reviews. I don’t think I would need another eye shadow…but then again when do I EVER NEED more eye shadow?!?! LOL
Can you use these wet too?

    • Christine

      Friday, March 6, 2009

LOL! I’m not sure if you can use these wet, and I’m one of those people who are too scared to try for fear of it getting ruined!

    Sunday, March 8, 2009

i just ordered this palette and i cant wait to receive it!! i read a lot of reviews how the matte one is better..but i wanna give this one a try cuz the swatches look very pretty. i just hope it wont be too intense on me! im kind of debating if i should order the matte one later on..=]

    • Christine

I’m a beginner at make-up and really want to buy this but i’m not sure whether I should but the matte or the shimmer… So which is better?

    • Christine

      Friday, March 27, 2009

I’d get shimmer — it’s easier to work with!

  31. LiLy

    Wednesday, May 20, 2009

    OOOOh this palette looks great!!!
I really am torn between the two!! ahhhhh i love shimmery but like it really really shimmery?? like it smudges all over the face?? as for the matte one how many of them are shimmery?? if i use a shimmery base on the matte would it still look matte?

gosh i just dont know what to chooooseee….

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 28, 2009

It is really shimmery, but the matte one has very few with shimmer. If you used a shimmery base, then it won’t look matte any more!

    Thursday, August 20, 2009

OMG, i think i’ve watched all the videos on YouTube about the 2 palettes – matte & ultra shimmer. And now i’m just confused..i don’t really know which one to choose :-ss do the both have the same pigmentation? thx in advance Christine ;)

    • Christine

      Monday, August 24, 2009

Yes, they’re both very pigmented, but I’d probably go with the Matte one. Ultra Shimmer is VERY frosty.
