Bobbi Brown Black Velvet Eyeshadows: Black Velvet, Black Berry, Black Charcoal, Black Chocolate
Bobbi Brown Black Velvet Collection: Eyeshadows
Bobbi Brown’s Black Velvet Collection includes three new Metallic Eyeshadows ($20 for 0.10 oz.), two new Eyeshadows ($20.00 for 0.08 oz.), and two new (and limited edition!) shades of Sparkle Eye Shadow ($24.00 for 0.13 oz.). I have four of the seven to review for you!
- Black Velvet is a blackened purple base with darkened lavender glitte and multi-colored shimmer. It has an almost wet, slightly tacky/sticky texture and feel, but it’s surprisingly blendable. It’s something you’d pat on rather than sweep on. There was some fall out when I used it, but it wasn’t much at all–definitely a lot less than you’d think for a glitter shadow.
- Black Berry is a deep brown-burgundy with flecks of red-burgundy shimmer. It doesn’t quite feel or read like a real metallic finish to me, but it’s a pretty shade nonetheless. It reminded me of a shimmery version of MAC Sketch.
- Black Charcoal is a dark black with soft gray tones and a matte finish. It’s opaque, smooth, and doesn’t look chalky.
- Black Chocolate is a blackened brown with cool undertones. It’s also smooth with a soft texture that doesn’t look chalky.
P.S. — I also realized something I hadn’t before, which was that Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadows are not all the same weight! They just look the same size, so it never occurred to me that they may not actually be that way.
RECOMMENDATION: Black Velvet is my favorite out of the bunch–it’s the one that feels the most original to me as well. If you love the way glitter looks but hate the mess it often makes, Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle Eyeshadows do a good job of giving you that fun, sparkly effect with minimal fall out.

beautiful! what would you say black chocolate is similar to in other brands...lets say... MAC. i really like that color.
I LOVE Bobbi Brown's eyeshadows, and these are right up my alley! I already bought 2 of the metallic ones, and am waiting on the 2 matte ones via UPS. Bobbi Brown's eyeshadows make the best powder eyeliners out of any other brand of eyeshadow I've ever tried. Wet or dry, doesn't matter, they stay on my lids and lashline without smudging or fading longer than any other powder eyeshadow and pencil... and they are good enough to rival the staying power of the best liquid and gel eyeliners. If anyone hasn't tried them, you should! But- warning: You might get hooked! :o)
MAC does the same thing with their veluxe pearl shadows only being 1.3g, instead of 1.5g like all other finishes. It's not as big of a difference as some of these shadows though. I've always wondered why, maybe something about different densities of the textures and fitting them into the same size pans...
Hi! Is black velvet like MAC's beauty marked? I love the swatch but wondered if they were different enough to own both.
I ordered Black velvet on Nordstrom's website, not in back order! :-) Christine, does Black Velvet remind you of Young Punk?
Is there any fall-out with Black Velvet? Looks like there would be, just wondering what your experience with it was.
Hey Lauren! I believe I mentioned my experience with fall out in the above post - there was some but very minimal, noteworthy minimal given it is a glitter eyeshadow.
Black Berry looks like Benefit's I Cannes and I Will velvet eyeshadow in the pan, but they swatched out differently :D interesting!
pretty. i (obviously) like black velvet, but wont be buying because i barely use the eyeshadows i already have like it. what do you think from mac is comparable to black chocolate?
Black Berry looks interesting in the pan but looks brown in the swatch. Would you say that color is more brown than burgundy? Ive been trying to find a nice bright burgundy with less brown in it but every one that is released seems a little disappointing to me. So you have any suggestions Christine?
Hmm, I don't think you'd love this one - it does have prominent brown tones to it. Have you tried maybe MAC Cranberry? It's not exactly burgundy, but it doesn't have brown in it.
I'm underwhelmed, they look so pretty in the pan .__. If the formula is good I'd give them a chance though, I like the colours ~
I have never been interested in Bobbi Brown, but I think Black Velvet might be my first purchase from this brand!
I love them all! Black Velvet is so unique. I must have it! Thanks for swatching all of these for us! The look you did with Black Velvet was too gorgeous, I'm so glad we can see a swatch of the eyeshadow now. :)
woa black velvet shadow looks crazy. in a good way of course. love the blue/green/pink shimmers in it. i could see it really adding dimension and interest to an otherwise simple eye look
LOVE Black Velvet. It's on back order though so I'll be waiting about two weeks until mine ships. :( Oh well. It'll be worth it!
How would you compare black velvet to the stila jewel eyeshadow palette in terms of texture and fallout?
Black Velvet is GORGEOUS!! Do you think this would be a good product for dewy lids? It looks a lot like the Stila palette you reviewed a while back...which do you think is better for that wet shimmery look? Thanks Christine!!
