Back-to-School Quickies

The alarm went off… a half hour ago.  You only have five to ten minutes before you have to head out the door–these are my favorite ways to look and feel good when time is short!

  • Neutral + Dark Crease: Pop a flesh-toned neutral all over the lid and add pop and oomph with a much darker crease. On warmer complexions, an eggplant purple adds definition and color without being over-the-top. On cooler complexions, navy and charcoal blues work well.
  • Bright Eyeliner: Whether you line the lower or upper lash lines (or both!), using a brightly colored eyeliner can give you a really fun look without a lot of work!
  • Find Your Duo: One of my favorite eyeshadow duos is Hourglass’ Gypsy–it just works well for me–and I reach for it regularly when I’m in need of some color on the lid but don’t have a lot of time to think about what I want to do. Whether it’s neutral or not, totally up to you, but finding a duo, trio, or palette with a never-fails combination is essential for those mornings you wake up late!
  • Bold Lips: Don’t be afraid of bold lip colors! Especially as we head into fall (officially, at least!), darker lip colors are always in style. You can add an instant brightness to your face by using a bolder, darker lip color. Plus, darker lip colors tend to last longer on lips, which means less reapplying.
  • “No Makeup” Makeup: Classic, polished, and easy to do once you figure out what products you love most for the look. Ideally, you want to add depth and brightness to the eyes as well as defined lashes; soft glow and natural color to cheeks; smooth, “flawless” skin; and your my-lips-but-better lipstick/lipgloss–look out for plums, mauves, and plummy-pinks.

What’s your go-to look when you only have a few minutes?

  1. I like shimmery brown liners, especially for lighter complexions. Eyeliner can automatically perk up someone’s face. Then you can just curl the lashes and run out the door. For darker complexions, I like to play up lips with a berry lipstick.

On rushed days, I apply concealer and Revon Spicy Cinnamon lipstick. It’s really just perfect for my NC42 skin.

For me the No-Makeup makeup for me when I have very little time. I throw an eyeshadow that’s a few shades darker than my skin(typically Buck from UD’s Naked palette) in the crease after applying their PP in original or whatever it’s called(just to get that smoothness over my lid and keep my eyelid from looking shiny). The Buck E/S gives it enough depth so that my lids look done without actually looking done. Throw a small amount of eyeiner on the bottom lid and smudge. Then mascara on my top lashes. For a little extra pop, I’ll sometimes throw Virgin E/S in the inner corner of the eye for brightbess. For my face I just throw on a powder foundation to even out skin tone and remove any redness. It won’t cover everything. You can still see any blemishes, but the powder will get rid of any redness, so it’s good enough for me. Then a light gloss as I’m driving to wherever I’m going(I tend to leave a lot of my glosses in the car).

My go-to is the neutral and dark crease. Do the base m/u and then the eyes with bronzer and highlight on cheeks. 30 mintues and go. It’s about all I can do everyday at 6 AM!

  4. Amy

I do either the first or last one. It’s been raining everyday in Miami for like a month and it’s not going to stop any time soon, so I don’t like having a lot of makeup on in this hot, muggy weather.

For the “no makeup” makeup, I use Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer for my dark circles, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light foundation, loose setting powder, CoverGirl LashBlast waterproof mascara, and MAC Partial to Pink lipgloss. Throughout the day I just use blotting papers and MAC Blot Powder.

To add to that for the natural lid, dark crease look, I use Urban Decay’s Buck on the lid, and Smog for the crease. I diffuse that with a highlight color on my brow bone so it won’t look so harsh. For eye liner, I use Stila’s Smudge Stick Waterproof liner in Lionfish.

  5. Frenchie

If I’m really running late? UD’s tinted moisturizer, Benefit’s Boing concealer w/One Hot Minute over it, mascara, and whatever pink/red lipstick or gloss I have on hand. :)

  6. Lisa

Whats a good plummy pink lip-gloss? For some reason my mind has trouble coming up with a color that doesn’t look like fuchsia!

    • Brand/price range? :)

Here is the Swatch Gallery link for plum lipglosses –

    • Iliana

I use the Bobbi Brown corrector in Peach and MAC Studio Finish concealer in NC35 to hide redness, dust some MAC Blot Powder all over and finish with MAC Cosmo lipstick or The Body Shop lipstick in Shade 06. They both are MLBB lipsticks on me (with Cosmo being rosier and the 06 one being a tad lighter) so I find that these are the best lippies for when I’m in a rush.

When I have more time, I try to curl my lashes, dab on some blush and/or bronzer and highlight with a Body Shop glow enhancer or the MAC lustre drops.

If I don’t have much time (like 5 mins tops), I just use powder, curl my lashes and put on lip stain.

  7. Anjali

Do you have any recs for the ‘no makeup’ lipstick or lipgloss?

  8. Duniya

Under eye concealer, mascara lipstick and a blush that sorta matches my lipstick!

  9. Meghan

If I’m running late, I tend to go with a neutral eye and bright lipstick. First I throw on some concealer on any blemishes and dust a powder foundation all over. I found Givenchy’s lipstick a couple years ago, and I still love them. #21 Shocking Pink or #17 Rouge Cancan are my favorites for this. For the eyes, I like to use Indianwood Paint Pot, with a healthy dose of mascara. If you can confidently wear a red lip, no one will be able to notice the fact that your eyes aren’t as dimensional-looking as they are with liner and a contrasting crease color.

  10. Courtney

naked eyes–except a line of dark brown or black on the upper, outer lashes, just to make them thicker looking. some mascara, and a cream blush that i can use on my cheeks and lips! so easy!

  11. My go-to look uses Wet n’ Wild’s “Walking on Eggshells” trio. The colors are neutral, perfect for any season and pair well with any lip color and outfit. It’s easy, doesn’t require a lot of work and it’s so affordable!

  12. Liz

Hm.. Becca shimmering skin perfector all over, conceiler if/where I need it, quick coat of mascara and whatever lipstick I feel like on my cheeks and lips.

  13. Ashley

My go-to look if I have only a few minutes is, at most, mascara. But it’d likely be no makeup at all. But then again, I haven’t actually worn makeup since last year; once my skin went crazy, I stopped wearing makeup (hadn’t worn foundation since beginning of 2009) because I felt uncomfortable with myself. Now that I no longer have acne, I don’t really care too much about makeup, although I still love it. I think I’ll prefer wearing it more once my red marks completely fade, although I think they’ve faded enough now that I’d be up for eye makeup.

If I’ve got such a short time before having to leave, I’d rather spend it on making sure my outfit and hair look nice (especially since I do pin curls at night, so I can’t leave the house full of clips on my head and I can’t just un-pin it all and leave it be; requires lots of brushing/work to get the look you want!), eat, brush teeth, use washroom, and then if I have any time, out on some makeup.

  14. Debra

Bronze or taupe shadow, black eyeliner, mascara, light application of foundation over sunscreen, dusting of setting powder, pink blush, and pink lipstick. Corrector and concealer are first, and eyebrows are last, but this look takes 10 minutes total!

  15. Jazz

    1) benefit creaseless cream shadow ( the brown one )
    2) eyeliner- whatever I have on me
    3) mascara so I have big lashes
    4) lipgloss
    5) concealer.

Takes about 5-7 minutes to do. Super easy , and I look nice.

  16. Maya

In a rush, I tend to go for those trusty eyeshadow colors that look good alone (or sometimes look darker in the crease as well and create depth on their own!). I really like the BE loose eyeshadows by themselves in particular. Then mascara (skip the liner), concealer, YSL Touche Eclat, a pretty blush, and a nice lip color!

  17. Reni

Bobbi brown colour corrector, YSL mascara and bobbi brown cream blush! That would take 2 mins to apply…
If I have 5 mins, I would include MAC Wedge on the crease and a brown eyeshadow along the lash line!

  18. Lyss

I do a quick cover up with concealer and powder, followed by light blush. Black eyeliner on my waterline and mascara, and then toss on a sheer light pink lip gloss as I run out the door.

  19. When I am in a rush, I usually apply Benefit R.S.V.P. on my lids and smear the rest up to the brow, and mascara. And a smidgen to the lower lid. Sometimes with liner, sometimes not. It gives me the wake up look.

  20. Julie

My everyday look is the “No Makeup” look whether i actually go without wearing makeup or i feel like applying makeup that day. i am blessed with clear skin so i can get away without wearing a lot of makeup. if i do wear makeup, ill cover up my dark circles (no sleep!!!!) with benefit erase paste, curl lashes and apply benefit bad gal lash mascara, use EOS lipbalm with clear lipgloss on top and maybe a sweep of MAC’s paint pot in rubenesque all over my lid. i think this look really “enhances” my beauty instead of covering up, which is what makeup should be used for!!

  21. Angelcat47

I slap on concealer and while that sets,I brush Powderflage over lids and browbones, line upper lashes, one coat of mascara, throw on mineral makeup and do brows/lips at stoplights on way to destination.

  22. Ariel

Oh I know those mornings too well. Usually I put on a generous coating of black mascara and mac ladybug lipstick. It looks like it was totally intentionally minimal but actually is what I know I can put on at the bus stop without feeling too silly. If I have a few extra minutes I’ll add a bit of mac moisture cover under my eyes and around my nose and blend it out with my fingers.

  23. Melisse

    1. Shu Uemura face architect smoothing fluid foundation – superb foundation especially for asians.
    2. Cle De Peau translucent powder – the best loose powder ever
    3. Nars All about Eve e/s duo – neutral e/s that just gives a beautiful natural glow to eyelids
    4. Bobbi brown sepia ink gel e/l – very natural e/l that goes with all shades of e/s
    5. Shu Uemura precise volume mascara – must have for straight asian
    6. Shu Uemura glow on blushers – gosh i just love how Shu blushers melt into the skin and last all day.
    7. Lip gloss

A very natural look that just makes you look healthy and glowing without being over made up.
