Rose Gold Remastered

Huda Beauty Rose Gold Remastered Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.59 oz.) is a new, permanent palette that’s a reformulation of the original Rose Gold palette. All the shades are updated, but there are some shades that have been removed and/or updated for this palette. The matte eyeshadows were more pigmented and easier to blend out than the original formula. I didn’t have any noteworthy issues with them–a few could have been more pigmented but were buildable, and I didn’t struggle with any of the shades. About half of the palette was good, but the other half was more inconsistent and problematic.

The shimmer formula is completely different (except Moon Dust, which was more like a typical shimmery, powder eyeshadow), and I don’t know that that’s better or worse–I actually think that the shimmers come out better on the lid, but the formulation isn’t like a traditional eyeshadow and really does have to be used with fingertips. Some of the shimmer shades seemed to work with stiffer, flat synthetic brushes (pressing, patting, and pushing motions were best). The shimmer eyeshadows felt more like a cream-powder hybrid (that felt more like a cream than a powder in the end). Like a lot of cream eyeshadows, fingertips tend to apply the most coverage and do the best for diffusing and blending edges, but that obviously yields less precision if one wants to use more than one shade on the lid.

I’ve seen chatter about the shimmer eyeshadows being hollow, but I didn’t find that to be true–they seemed denser and reactive like a cream eyeshadow, e.g. if I pressed on it or pushed at the surface, it left behind an indent and stayed that way. I didn’t have any pan showing in any of the shades I used despite swatching and using the palette multiples times. More of my shimmer shades were raised along the edge of the pan (almost like they were overflowing) with a slight indentation in the center (almost like the product settled as it set).

What I’m most concerned about is whether the creamier shimmer shades will dry out over time, as there were a couple that I found much harder to work with (fingertips, brushes, etc.) as they felt noticeably drier/thinner compared to other shades. I worked with MAC 242s for the shimmers for the looks shown above. They are harder to use than the typical shimmer eyeshadow, though they seemed to stay more reflective and foiled–but one could just use a metallic, powder eyeshadow with a dampened brush to achieve the same result with less effort. The brand stated that the “metallic shadows can be applied easily with a brush,” which I don’t think is that accurate–only a couple worked well with brushes–and that this statement is more reflective of the formula: “for a more amplified finish, apply using your finger.” (Notice how they mentioned finish, not color payoff, which suggests that it would be more metallic with fingertip application, not more pigmented.)

The brand would have been better off releasing a palette of just the Melted Metals as a cream eyeshadow palette to be used with fingertips or include a specific applicator for best results because marketing the formula as “easily” used with a brush is just not the case. If I was just patting on some of the shades on the center of my lid with my fingertip, they would be a lot easier to use, but when almost half the palette is like that, you lose a lot of the cohesive value of having so many in a single palette.

Dubai (Remastered)

Dubai (Remastered) is a deep gold with warm, olive undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation when applied with fingertips and semi-opaque, buildable coverage when I used a brush (MAC 242). The consistency was creamier than most of the shimmer shades in the palette, which I think contributed to it being much easier to work with and to apply to my lid. It adhered particularly well to my lid and gave a very intense, metallic shine that stayed in place for almost eight and a half hours (without fallout!).

Fling (Remastered)

Fling (Remastered) is a medium-dark, coppery red with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff when applied with a fingertip but had more medium coverage when applied with a brush (MAC 242) that was hard to build as it seemed to get patchy when I tried to build it up. The texture was smooth to the touch but thin and a little drier/stiffer than I’d consider ideal for a cream eyeshadow. It lasted for eight and a half hours on me before fading (but not creasing).

Trust Fund (Remastered) is a medium copper with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation that applied that way whether I used fingertips or a brush (MAC 242). The consistency was creamier and slightly more emollient than most shades in the palette, which made it a lot easier to work with when I used a brush. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing very faintly on me.

Rose Gold (Remastered) is a medium, peachy copper base with pink-to-copper shifting sparkle paired with a metallic finish. The texture felt creamier initially but seemed to get a bit drier with use, and this was the shade that made me particularly concerned about just how this palette would fair over the months with extended use and exposure to air. It blended out decently but took some finagling to make it come together. It had medium coverage when applied with fingertips and less with brushes (wouldn’t recommend using brushes with this one). The color started to fade on me after eight and a half hours of wear.

Pink Diamond

Pink Diamond is a medium-dark, plummy mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was smooth, soft, and moderately creamy with intense, opaque coverage achieved in a single layer with a brush. If all of the Melted Metals applied like this one, I think the learning curve would have been worth it–I was ooh-ing and ahh-ing as I applied this particular shade (which doesn’t happen that often). It blended out like a dream and stayed on well without creasing for nine hours.

24K (Remastered) is a dirty, dark gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was smooth, thin, and lightly tacky with enough slip for it to apply with semi-opaque, buildable coverage when I used a brush (MAC 242) and opaque coverage when applied with fingertips. Risque is a muted, medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a slightly drier, grainier texture (just barely) that applied better than it felt. The eyeshadow was buildable and blended out fairly well on my lid. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Doll Face is a bright, medium-dark pink with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The texture was soft, blendable, and easy to work with as the color translated very true-to-pan. It stayed on beautifully for eight and a half hours before I noticed any fading.

Demure is a soft, peachy-coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firm in the pan, which made it easy to pick up and blend out on my skin. It lasted nicely for eight hours on me.

Blessed (Remastered) is a light-medium, golden copper with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had medium coverage applied with a brush and semi-opaque coverage when applied with fingertips. The texture was dense, slightly stiffer to work with, which was why it didn’t seem to be as workable with brushes as anticipated. I was able to make it work with a bit of extra effort, though. The color wore well for eight and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

It had good pigmentation that applied well to bare skin but had slight fallout as I blended it out. It lasted well for eight hours on me.

Bubbly (Remastered)

Bubbly (Remastered) is a soft, peachy bronze with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow felt drier and had less slip, which made it stiffer and harder to pick up with brushes (but even fingertips didn’t yield great results). It was extremely difficult to spread across my skin, and I could just manage to diffuse the edges a bit. I tried using it with a dampened brush, which improved the consistency a bit. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before creasing.

The pigmentation was fantastic, while the eyeshadow had a soft, blendable texture that wasn’t too dusty or too firmly pressed in the pan, so it was easy to work with. This shade lasted for just over eight hours on me before it started to fade.
