5 Ways to Wear Colored Eyeliner

I love using colored eyeshadow or eyeliner to add more oomph to a look, so I knew it would be easy to find five ways once I received reader Jen’s request. It’s great to border black eyeliner on the waterline to give it a crisper line of black, and it can also prevent black eyeliner for migrating past the waterline (sometimes!). I also like using lighter eyeshadow smudged underneath to brighten eyes, especially with really dark or heavy colors on the lid. I often choose colors that tie-in with either the overall look (as in “An Ode to True Chartreuse”) or from the lid/crease color.

Since I cannot wear eyeliner on my upper lash line without having swollen lids the next day, most of these involve colored eyeliner on the lower lash line, but you could just easily flip it and apply to your upper lash line instead.

What’s your favorite way to wear colored eyeliner?

  1. That fourth look is AMAZING. =]

  2. Ugh, I love your Memento Mori eye look. I’m still kicking myself for not buying that palette. I saw it sell for over $80 on ebay a week ago! There is no way I’m spending that much for something that originally only cost $36.

I love that second look, Peacocky, I have brown eyes as well and would love to try this out!

  4. You could wear eyeshadow as eyeliner instead! You’re not allergic to it…

    • No, it’s not eyeliner I’m allergic to – my upper lash line is extremely sensitive. Even when I do eyeshadow, I make sure not to press directly against that area with an eyeshadow brush. Just lining with a brush, with no product on it, can cause my eyes to flare up. I have had people routinely tell me how ugly I am because I don’t line my upper lash line so I have tried many, many times and suffered swollen lids, rashes, flaking skin, and even once had one eye shut for a day. I hate disappointing people, so I’m always trying to do what people want to see. I try to do it in looks occasionally and suffer the consequences (and I tend to remove it quickly so I can minimize the effect) but I just can’t do it regularly and for that I apologize. I’ve literally spent years trying to find something that works until I realized that it’s the lash line itself that just can’t take it.

Christine, I’m so sorry people say awful things like that to you – all they’re doing is showing their own ugliness in an effort to drag down a gorgeous, creative, professional and hardworking person like yourself.

It’s pathetic and cowardly behaviour to attack someone via electronic mediums and hide behind the anonymity of the internet – I can only imagine individuals who do so have a severe lack of self worth and it’s incredibly sad that they feel they have to be hateful to others in order to prop up their own self esteem.
I honestly hope they realize how destructive to their own confidence such willful negativity can be and that they can eventually overcome it – I won’t hold my breath though :(

        *I* think you’re fabulous!

        • Aw, thanks, CeeBee! :) I try to really transform it into something positive – by using it as motivation to work hard, make good decisions, and just keep at it and hope that one day they’ll change their minds.

I definitely think the lack of consequences on the internet enables some a certain freedom to say whatever without filters or manners but maybe with more attention on cyber bullying, we can teach our children to conduct themselves in more respectful ways! I’m very lucky to have such a great support system, and these days, my skin is pretty tough, but initially, some comments can be devastating.

I lived the 8 ways to wear to the beach you did last summer. Will you be doing that with surf baby again this summer?

    • I don’t usually do those posts any more, as readers complained that there were too many MAC posts!

      • Emily

Hey Christine, I know the “Mac” discussions have caused quite a stir but seeing as were on the topic… I feel a little let down due to little Mac info these days…. Every morning when I wake I check my update temptalia email hoping for something from Mac and most days, am disappointed!!!! I totally understand that this is not your fault due to circulation bans… So in order to counteract all us Mac addicts if you could focus a little more on the perm range or looks I would be eternally greatfull!!! :-) I think you would find, being such a big brand majority (or at least a large portion) of your readers would agree… I am in no way trying to start a brawl thanks Christine :-)

Hey these are great – making me realise that I missed your looks! You have such a great eye for colour and texture! :)

  7. Chloe

Hi Christine, wondering if it’d be too much trouble to have a picture of all the products used (with each look)? I know you list and link to them but I feel a picture would be easier.. maybe.. Just a suggestion thanks :)

    • I review most of the products that I use, so you can always click the link or search the blog, because then there would be a photo, review, and swatch there :)

  8. I love the second look soo much :) So beautiful :)

  9. Angela

What nerve for people to tell you how “ugly” you are for not wearing liner! That is ridiculous!! You are beautiful and so are your eye looks. Don’t listen to them, they obviously are the ugly ones. Just keep doing what you are doing!!

  10. Andrea

Totally love those looks and u are one inpiration for me that are trying to use colors instead of flat black

  11. You show real artistry with you application of shadows. They all look picture perfect.

  12. CeeBee

I love coloured liner – I can’t remember the last time I wore black!

My favourite is to pick two complimentary shades, usually in the same colour family (but not always!) and wear a darker/deeper shade on my upper lashline and a lighter or brighter colour on my lower!
I have Permaplum and Designer Purple (both MAC) on today, though I reckon that charcoal and purple will be a killer combination too!

  13. Love all of these looks, so gorgeous! but my favs would have to be the 2nd and 5th, im a sucker for sparkly eyes!

  14. Angelcat47

I always wear colored liner on my upper eyelids,as I don’t wear shadow often.I think I need to experiment more.BTW,Christine, looks 2 and 4 are fab!!
