MAC Basic Bitch MAC Girls Personality Palette ($39.50 for TBA oz.) is a smoky set of shades that includes eight eyeshadows and one highlighter. The palette features a new eyeshadow formula with four finishes–Satin Shine, Smooth Pearl, Foiled Shadow, and Creamy Matte–that are supposed to have a “creamy, silky texture with superior colour payoff” along with a powder highlighter that’s described as “lightweight” and has “just the right amount of pearl and pop.”

Overall, the formula isn’t night and day from the brand’s standard powder eyeshadow (and did not seem like they reinvented powder eyeshadow!), but it was noticeably softer, more finely-milled, and the Foiled finishes were denser and very sparkly–almost like an amped up take on their Lustre eyeshadows. The Creamy Matte finish seemed to have more pigmentation and blendability than of the brand’s firmer mattes have had. Unfortunately, the quality of each shade varied enough that it was not a slam dunk formulation, but I liked the direction of the formula but would like to see better consistency.

Sly Girl

Sly Girl is a medium-dark purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a creamy, moderately dense texture that yielded strong color and intense shimmer. There was slight fallout over time but most of it stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Me Me Me is a bright white with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin sheen. It had good pigmentation, which was buildable to full coverage, paired with a soft, velvety texture that wasn’t too thick or too thin to the toch. The eyesahdow wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Tattle-tale is a cool, silvery lavender with warmer pink and silver sparkle. It had medium pigmentation, which did not improve substantially when used with a dampened brush. The texture was more sparkly compared to Sly Girl, so there were some stray sparkles that dropped as I blended out the color and later on during wear. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Hell in Heels is a subdued, deep plum with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. There was such a faint sheen that it looked more like a matte in practice, but it had more of the blendability of a satin or pearl finish–just easier to use without adding a lot of shine. It had good color coverage in a single layer, and the color was blendable along the edges. This shade stayed on well for eight hours.

Ms. Personality is a dirty, golden taupe with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It almost seemed like a duochrome to me, but it did not really shift so much as it had more contrasting shimmer compared to the base color. It had medium coverage, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage with two to three layers. The texture was slightly dusty, though it blended well and adhered better than I expected. The eyesahdow lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Text Me Later is a dark, bluish gray with a satin finish. It had sheer coverage with a very dusty, thin consistency that made it difficult to use, as so little of it stuck to the lid and there was no building up the coverage. It wore well for six hours on me–from what I could tell.

Love This Bitch is a pale, pinkish white base with warmer, pale gold pearl. It had semi-sheer coverage, which was difficult to build up, so it was typically a more subtle to moderate highlighter. I felt like it applied better to the skin and blended out than when I just swatched it on my arm. The texture felt very smooth, but it was dense and thin, so I had to use a heavier hand and/or denser brush to get product to transfer onto the brush and then onto my skin. The highlighter wore well for seven and a half hours on me.
