Scarlet Season:  Temptalia’s Favorite Red Lipsticks & Glosses

I’m sure some of you are interested in what my favorites were–and to be sure, I included some that just had flat-out spectacular formulas and wear, even if the color wasn’t what I’d normally go for–so here’s a compilation of them.  They’re, for the most part, in alphabetical order by brand.

I can still (and now with full confidence after testing so many reds!) that Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque is still my SCARLET QUEEN.  Sorry to all the lovely shades of red from the Scarlet Season, but Dragon still has my heart, and I think it’s totally made away with it and is now in hiding, hoping to never have to give it back!  (I am also ever-relieved every time someone tells me they purchased Dragon and love it, because sometimes I fear for the worst!)

Of course, there are still many shades that came close and gave poor Dragon a big ol’ scare, and those make up the rest that I’ve included.  I do have to give some props to La Prairie for having a lipstick that really does apply like the sweetest dream and does make every lip line a little less noticeable.  Urban Decay’s Revolution lipstick also had a particularly lovely formula; all smooth and moisturizing and glossy.  Of course, both Dolce & Gabbana and Guerlain didn’t disappoint in their crisp, pigmented, and lip-huggin’ formulas, either.  MAC is classic, and they do some fine reds.  Bring back Queen’s Sin, please.

Scarlet Season:  The Glossiest Reds

I wish we had been able to cover more red lipglosses, but alas, red lipsticks do tend to reign supreme!  But since the glosses were not nearly as numerous as the lipsticks, what better way to remember them than with a dedicated round-up just for them?

My personal favorites were Guerlain Rouge Sultan (which is described as a lip gloss, but you could just as easily classify it as a liquid lipstick, but whatever!), Le Metier de Beaute Framboise Creme, MAC Check, Please, and MAC Warning.  Too bad half that list was limited edition or discontinued.  MAC Russian Red makes a good substitute for a bold, bright, glossy red, though, if you don’t have either Check, Please or Warning on hand.

Scarlet Season:  Orange -Based Reds Round-up

I’m surprised (and quite happy about it!) that we covered nearly as many orange-based reds as blue-based reds.  I just feel like we ended up with a very well-rounded bunch of reds we were able to feature over the past three months, which is such a good thing.  It means I was able to tested out numerous shades and variations, but it also means that everyone was able to see that variety, too!

I’m not too keen on orange-reds on myself, but my favorites on myself were Dolce & Gabbana Sheer, Guerlain Geisha, La Prairie Rouge Clair, MAC Rockocco, and Urban Decay Revolution.  My absolute favorites in terms of formula and application overall (whether or not I liked it on me) were Giorgio Armani #401, Chanel Coromandel, Dolce & Gabbana Fire, La Prairie Rouge Clair, and Urban Decay Revolution–they just applied effortlessly and looked it.

Dolce & Gabbana Sheer Shine Lipstick ($30.00) is a glossy, orange-based red. It’s smooth, feels moisturizing, and is richly pigmented. Even though the Shine formula is designed to deliver semi-sheer color, this particular shade definitely gives lips plenty of color. Rimmel Temptation Lasting Finish Lipstick ($5.19) is a bold, ruby red with subtle red shimmer (very fine!). It’s creamy, opaque, and wears for a good four or five hours. Even when it does fade, it leaves behind a nice stain (as many reds often do), so you could always slick on some lipgloss for a softer red pout later on. As far as drugstore brands go, Rimmel’s lipstick impressed me with its staying power and rich color. It had a sweet scent that felt a little synthetic, and the packaging feels cheaper than what I like, but overall, it was pretty good for $5! (As I mentioned previously, Temptation is Rimmel’s blue-based red, while Alarm is their more orange-based red!)
