MAC Future Emotions Jeremy Scott Lip x 9 Palette ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) contains nine shades of lipstick with a few being from the brand’s permanent range. The biggest thing to note is that where I’ve tried a color in the past (as a traditional, twist-up lipstick), it was always inferior in the palette–thinner, drier, or clingier in the pan version. The second characteristic that seems important to note is that there’s really not much product in the palette; just a little more than a single lipstick (0.10 oz.), which retails for $17.50.

Carmine Rouge

Carmine Rouge is a medium red with cooler, pinky undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied evenly and smoothly across my lips. I found that it was tough to build up beyond semi-opaque coverage, though. The texture was lightweight, thin (and thinner than the tube-version I have), but it didn’t feel clingy. It wore well for over six hours and was neither drying nor hydrating on me.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.1 oz. - $190.00 Per Ounce

MAC Lipstick comes in a variety of finishes, and the pigmentation and wear tend to be dependent on the finish. The sheer finishes, like Lustres, tend to wear for only a couple of hours and have sheer coverage (as designed) and are non-drying.

Some of the original Matte shades have a stiffer, drier formula, while newer ones have a more velvety, silicone-feel to them, and the latter are creamier, more comfortable to wear, and easier to apply, but most Matte shades are quite pigmented and long-wearing, though some are drying.

The Amplified and Satin finishes tend to have good pigmentation, lightly creamy to moderately creamy consistencies with a bit of shine, and moderate to long wear with deeper, richer shades wearing longer. The Frost and Metallic finishes have the most variance between shades with coverage ranging from semi-sheer to opaque with average wear and non-drying to slightly drying formulas. All MAC lipsticks are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Morange

Morange is a bright, medium orange with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly on me. The consistency seemed firmer in the pan, but as soon as I put my lip brush to it, the product softened quite a bit (and this didn’t occur with all shades). There was a bit of color that pulled into my deeper lip lines, and it did seem to be slightly more emollient compared to the tube-version I have. This shade stayed on well for five hours and was non-drying.

Violetta is a medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a violet pearl. The tube-version I have is much more pigmented and significantly more shimmery, so the shade in the palette ended up looking darker and less pearlescent. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that did not build up. The texture was thinner and a bit drier overall, though it did not feel as drying or as clingy compared to the more matte shades in the palette. It wore well for five hours and was non-drying.

Breathing Fire is a rich, deep magenta with cool, blue undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly but emphasized my lip lines as it was thin, clingy, and prone to settling into them. It lasted for five and a half hours but was drying over time. The bullet version of this shade is so much better and more comfortable to wear.

Happy Song is a light-medium, bubblegum pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff in a single layer, but the texture was thin, drier, and clingy–it was almost chalky when I pressed my lips together. As a result, it emphasized all my lip lines, and the color pulled away from them and looked “cracked.” It lasted for four and a half hours but faded unevenly and settled further into my lip lines. The formula felt drying to me.

Living in Stereo is a medium-dark peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly on my lips, but it had a thin, drier consistency that felt chalky after I had applied it as there seemed to be no moisture left. This also resulted in my lip lines becoming more apparent. It wore well for three and a half hours and felt drying.
