Becca Star Child (2) Light Shifter Finishing Veil ($34.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a light-medium, peachy brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had sheer coverage, so it did tint and show up noticeably on my skin (as it was not my shade), but I would expect this shade to work for light-medium to medium complexions.

This was the first shade I bought from the range, as I thought it would suit my coloring, but it was too dark by a few shades, so you won’t find me wearing it above, since that wouldn’t make sense, but I did apply and test it out nonetheless (in person, where nobody but hubby could see me!). The powder initially had a smoother, silky consistency but a firmer press, so it wasn’t powdery, which I liked, but it developed hard pan quickly.

The hard pan made it harder and harder to pick up product and rendered it useless after a few uses. I had to use a paper towel to rub away that hardened layer to bring it back to life, which meant product waste and an extra step to use it.

Ignoring the hard pan problem (which isn’t minor!), the powder itself did have a satin finish that softened and smoothed out my skin. It applied evenly and diffused well without lifting up base products or turning patchy/caky in places. When applied over my base, it extended the wear of it by an hour and a half.

Becca Scattering (1) Light Shifter Finishing Veil ($34.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a light, pale yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a satin finish. For the purposes of swatching, I heavily built up the left swatch to give a better idea of color, as it was a sheer powder–as marketed–and would have been difficult to see against my skin tone otherwise!

The powder itself lived up to a lot of its claims; it set my makeup in place, produced a satin-like finish, which added some life back to a more matte base or helped to tamp down dewiness of a more luminous base, and extended the wear of my makeup by an hour to an hour and a half. It never looked powdery, and it didn’t lift up my base nor cake up with higher coverage foundations.

The issue I had was in trying to use the product over time as it developed hard pan very readily, and when using powder to set, often a liquid or cream base, there will be transfer of some of the base to the setting powder’s pan over time. I had to use a paper towel to rub off the hardened surface periodically in order to keep using the product, so that resulted in wasted product and an extra step that really should be unnecessary.

It's supposed to be a "weightless setting powder" that has a "filtering effect" and "satin finish." The coverage was supposed to be "sheer," which I'd agree with, but it had enough coverage that the wrong shade did visibly change the undertone or depth of my skin, and it was better to err on the lighter side than going too dark in my experience.

I felt like it worked well when I was able to pick up product, but the product was more firmly-pressed into the pan and seemed to get firmer and firmer with subsequent use. It really ate up any oils, creams, liquids, etc. that transferred onto my brush. It's not uncommon to get traces of one's liquid or cream-based foundation when using setting powder, so I was disappointed that the powder was so reactive. I had to use a paper towel to rub off the surface to loosen the powder back up to be able to pick up product with my brush.

Ignoring the texture issue, when the powder was applied to my skin, it did have a satin-like finish, so it could add more of skin-like finish if used over a more matte base and tamp down the shine of a dewier base (like the coordinating Dewing Tint). It applied evenly, didn't turn cakey or look powdery on my skin, and it did extend the wear of my base by an hour or so.

Guerlain Electric Pearl Meteorites Pearls ($65.00 for 0.80 oz.) is a soft, translucent peach with fine copper micro-sparkles and finer, champagne pearl. It’s the newest limited edition release in the Meteorites Pearls range, and this holiday’s edition is supposed to “create a halo of radiance” with a “subtle harmony of gold and copper pearls” that “counter a dull complexion” while the “champagne and white pearls reflect the light.” It is a more sparkly version in Meteorites, so if seeing visible sparkle on your skin is a deal-breaker, you’ll want to give this a miss. I could see if working as a subtle highlighter on cheeks if desired, and when packed on enough, I could get the faintest hint of color on my skin.

As a finishing powder, it added subtle luminosity all-over my face without making me look powdery, and it did not change my skin tone or coloring. I do find the effect is subtle enough that it is more noticeable in person and in harsher light (studio lighting is more forgiving, so the finishing powder doesn’t do as much lifting). The Meteorite Pearls didn’t impact the longevity of my base in either direction. I felt like I saw the light being reflected and some brightening of my overall complexion, but it was a subtle effect as usual.

I noticed that this year’s edition did not include any pouf or foam round on top the pearls, so mine arrived rather dusty. They are floral-scented.

Laura Mercier Translucent Medium Deep Loose Setting Powder Glow ($38.00 for 1.00 oz.) is a soft, medium-tan with warm undertones and a medium, golden sheen. It had sheer to semi-sheer coverage when applied with a powder brush and dusted all-over my face (which isn’t shown, as this shade isn’t intended for my skin tone but those deeper than I, please refer to my Translucent review for an idea of the effect of the powder all-over). It was buildable, like the lighter shade, so I applied it more heavily to show how it looks on my skin and to make it clear that this isn’t a subtly, luminous powder either.

The powder felt smooth, silky, and was very finely-milled, which made it easy to apply all-over to set my base makeup but could also be built-up to act more as a light to moderate highlighter. It sat well on my skin, but it wasn’t as blurring/smoothing compared to the original powder, which is more mattifying. The slight sheen it gave all-over was visible to my eye, which may or may not be your cup of tea. If you’re someone who tends to like a dewy, very glowy base, then it might be a good fit. I found this powder worked better to complement the more mattifying original powder. It extended the wear of my base products by two to four hours, depending on the formula, environmental conditions, and how heavy (or sheer) the application of. I would say it typically made my base wear well for between 10 and 14 hours.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Glow ($38.00 for 1.00 oz.) is a pale, yellowed powder with a golden sheen. It had sheer coverage when dusted all over my face (as a setting powder), but it had enough shimmer and was buildable that I was able to apply it as a highlighter on my cheekbones, just to give you a better idea of how much of a sheen this can add to the skin.

The powder was finely-milled and silky to the touch, which helped it apply all-over my face to set my base. Depending on the formula, how much of that formula I applied, and what I did that day, the wear ranged between 10 and 14 hours of solid wear out of my base (as compared to 7 to 12 hours without). I did not find that it was as good as smoothing on my skin’s natural texture and pores as the original Loose Setting Powder (which I love), but it did sit well on my skin and did not make my foundations appear cakey.

It yielded a noticeable sheen wherever I applied it; not really a subtle glow but light to moderate with faintly visible pearl if I looked closely, which I know can be a deal-breaker for some. I preferred using the Glow powder on the high points of my face and underneath my eyes but preferred the original for the rest of my face.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to give a "glow finish" while setting makeup for "up to 12 hours" in two shades--Translucent and Medium Deep. It is described as having "sheer coverage" that "blur the look of fine lines and imperfections." The powders have a silky, finely-milled quality and are sheer but neither is colorless, and I noticed that the Translucent darkened my foundation about half a shade overall (I'm about light to light-medium). Both shades deposit a soft, barely-there shimmer, but it's somewhat visible close-up, so they result in a good deal of luminosity when applied all-over. I found that I preferred the look of the original Loose Setting Powder for most of my face and using the Glow version on strategic areas for a candlelit glow as the original formula gave my skin a smoother, more pore-less finish than the Glow version.

The powder did help extend the wear of my foundation, and I'd agree that it definitely kept my foundation looking fresh for between 10 and 14 hours, depending on environment, formula, and how much foundation I applied (or didn't apply). In general, I would recommend this powder only for someone who likes a very dewy finish, doesn't mind visible pearl/sheen on the skin, and is light-medium or deeper (or doesn't mind a warming powder if one is fairer).

Guerlain Rainbow Pearls Meteorites Pearls ($63.00 for 0.80 oz.) is a translucent powder that is supposed to have “six new shades” that “diffuse redness and dark spots” and minimize “areas of shadow” and “counter dullness.” Per the description, it states to use it to “set make-up and revive the complexion.” It seemed to neutralize some of the natural redness in my skin when applied over bare skin (maybe by 10-15%), but when I used it over foundation, the effect wasn’t necessary given that the foundation was doing the heavy lifting anyway. It did more in the way of softening out my natural texture and giving my foundation a soft focus finish without being too flat or too powdery. I don’t think that it did that much to “counter dullness” nor minimize “areas of shadow.”

This limited edition, summer version of the famous Meteorites Pearls is more of a translucent powder that softens skin texture and the look of pores but doesn’t add a lot of noticeable sparkle/shimmer. I’d say more in the vein of delicately shimmered to keep the powder from reading flat or matte on the skin but not actually shimmery or frosted in finish. The pearls yielded a good amount of powder when used with a medium-sized powder brush (I used IT’s Plush Powder brush) without being too dusty in the container. It was violet-scented but the scent didn’t linger noticeably after it was applied.

When it came to setting makeup, the incredibly finely-milled, silky texture of the translucent powder worked particularly well with dewier foundations without taking down the finish too much like more traditional setting powders might. It seemed to extend the life of my foundation by an hour to an hour and a half, which is a little less than a typical setting powder does for me (gets me to about 10-hour of solid wear from my base makeup).

There was a “Rainbow Pearls” that was launched a few years ago (also called Summer Edition), and the two are not the same–this year’s iteration is more neutral and translucent with less sparkle/shimmer.

Guerlain Gold Pearl Meteorites Pearls ($65.00 for 0.88 oz.) is a translucent, light beige powder with warmer undertones and flecks of larger, light gold sparkle. The effect was slightly smoothing with stray, visible sparkles on my skin. The latter effect is not something evreyone is going to appreciate, so keep the sparkle factor in mind if noticeable shimmer or glitter on the skin is a deal-breaker!

Per Guerlain, the limited edition holiday version of Meteorites is supposed to “warm up the complexion and fight dullness” with “reflect[ing] light.” I actually felt like this year’s powder did a lot less to smooth and blur my skin’s natural texture and pores than past releases, and it did not seem to do much in the way of brightening or warming up my skin tone, though I am warmer in tone and light-medium in color, so the latter wasn’t a surprise (it’s lighter than my skin tone). Over the years, I’ve often found that the subtle effect is something I can tell in person but is less noticeable in photos, but this version definitely doesn’t do as much as past Meteorites Pearls (of which I am normally a fan). There was a slight effect, but we’re taking what was already subtle to a very subtle level. If Meteorites were on your radar, the permanent iteration does a better job.

This year’s version is also a bit smaller than past iterations at 0.70 oz.

Hourglass Vol. 3 (Holiday 2017) Ambient Lighting Edit Palette ($80.00 for 0.29 oz.) contains two Ambient Lighting Powders, one Ambient Bronzing Powder, two Ambient Lighting Blushes, and one Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder. The palette should work well for someone who likes the Ambient formula, as I felt like the formulas were consistent with the standalone shades I’ve tried in the past.

I know in the past, the value of the Hourglass palettes has been an issue, so I did the math for these – each powder was listed as 0.049 oz. each, which is comparable in size to last year’s palette. The breakdown is: $12.88 worth of Ambient Lighting Powder, $6.28 worth of Ambient Bronzing Powder, $24.83 worth of Ambient Lighting Blush, and $11.64 worth of Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder for a total value of $55.63. It might still be worth it for someone who rarely finishes their products, would not buy these products individually, and/or travels often.

I’m not sure what the release date for this palette is at all retailers but imagine it will be in the next few weeks.

Diffused Light

Diffused Light is a pale, yellowed beige with a soft, natural matte finish. There were fine, micro-sparkles strewn throughout the very silky, finely-milled powder. The powder applied translucently to the skin but gave my skin a softer, smoother look without making it appear flat or totally matte. I like the Ambient Lighting Powders for setting and/or finishing makeup. The Ambient Lighting Powders breathe life back into the skin after you’ve applied foundations and setting powders–especially if you have more mattifying base products on. They’re not full-on highlighters, but they’re not exactly setting powders (by Hourglass’ definition, they are finishing powders).

If you have very oily skin, you may still need your usual setting powder, but for my normal-to-dry skin, the Ambient Lighting Powders work as a setting and finishing powder in one for me. I get extended wear out of my base products, but the powders also smooths the skin’s appearance, minimizes pores and imperfections, and gives the skin a natural luminosity (not shiny, not shimmery). It is that something extra that someone won’t see and go, “Oh, nice lipstick!” but “Did you do something different with your skin?” When people start asking you about your skincare routine, that’s when you know a product is really delivering on its promises!

The only negative I have to say about the products is that the texture is very, very soft, so depending on the brush you use, excess powder can be kicked up (and wasted).

Hypnotic Strobe Light

Hypnotic Strobe Light is a soft, peachy gold with warm undertones and a sparkling sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage, which wasn’t particularly buildable, with lighter sparkle and fine gold shimmer. If you loathe “glittery” highlights, I would stay away; while it did not have chunky glitter, the particles were noticeable. Keep in mind, the brand designed the formula to be sheerer dry and more intense damp. It blended right in with my skin tone and gave a soft sheen. The texture was on the dusty side–more so than usual with the formula–but very blendable. Used with a dampened brush, it was more metallic on the skin but the coverage did not increase by much. On me, it lasted for eight hours.

Dim Light

Dim Light is a soft, peachy beige with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The powder was finely-milled, silky to the touch, and a bit powdery in the pan, but it blended out easily on the skin and sat well. It gave my skin a smoother, more brightened appearance, though the effect was subtle enough that I found it difficult to capture in photos. It seemed consistent with past iterations (palette and standalone) of this shade. It worked well as a setting powder (extended wear of my base by an hour or two) or finishing powder.

Luminous Bronze Light

Luminous Bronze Light is a medium, golden brown with soft, pale gold and medium gold shimmer. The formula is supposed to have “buildable color and a radiant finish.” It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage with a soft, lightly dusty texture that kicked up excess product in the pan but did not look dry or powdery on the skin. The bronzing powder blended out nicely on the skin and gave a luminous sheen. I found that the version in my palette appeared lighter than my standalone compact, though their undertones were very similar. It wore well for eight hours on me. Formula Overview

The Ambient Lighting Bronzer formula is supposed have a “sheer, airy” feel (sheer as in texture) that give a “natural, sun-kissed glow” with the “illuminating effects of Ambient Lighting Powder” with “bronze pigments” that give it “buildable color.” The formula tends to be more pigmented (usually semi-opaque), but the textures are always soft enough that a less dense brush or lighter hand is an option for picking up less product and getting less coverage. I find that the bronzer formula tends to be less powdery compared to the original Ambient Lighting Powders, which is nice. The wear is typically around eight hours on me.

Surreal Halo

Surreal Halo is a medium, rosy plum with subtle, warm undertones and a fine, sprinkling of gold pearl. It had semi-sheer coverage, which was buildable to medium coverage and in line with the brand’s description of the formula. The texture was soft to the touch but more powdery than anticipated based my past experience with their blush formula. I think that when applied, it looked beautiful–luminous, even–so it ended up working out but swatches were certainly concerning. The blush lasted for eight hours on me before fading.

Pure Effect

Pure Effect is a brighter, medium pink with soft, warm undertones and a satin sheen. The finish was exceptionally lovely–probably one of the better finishes in the formula that I’ve come across thus far–with a very smooth, silky texture that wasn’t powdery or dusty in the pan. It was, however, opaque in a single layer (which was at odds with the brand’s “buildable color” description), but I felt like the softness of the texture and blendability of the formula made it easy to just use less and build up coverage if sheerer coverage was desired. This shade lasted for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to have “depth and dimension” unlike traditional blush, be “lightweight and airy,” and have the “perfect balance of pigment and powder.” Hourglass says it uses “an advanced ‘miscelare’ technique,” which means to mix in Italian (per Sephora) and is how the marbled effect is achieved. The blush is also supposed to have “buildable color.” It does bring to mind the concept of a lot of baked formulas on the market, but I think the texture is softer and more finely-milled than most.

The texture is very soft and delicate; it feels exactly like the Ambient Lighting Powders. In an all-over powder, I don’t mind what can sometimes veer on powderiness, but in a blush, it can be easy to overload color onto the blush and then onto the skin. I wish it was slightly firmer or less powdery, which would minimize waste and make it more foolproof to apply.
