Dark Galaxy

Pat McGrath Dark Galaxy MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that has come and gone, and based on what the brand has said, I wouldn’t expect this palette to be re-released. Smoked Amethyst is a repromote, while the other shades are new. CosmiK and Odyssey are the most interesting shades in the palette, while the others are more dupable in my eyes.

The palette performed well with most shades having mostly opaque to opaque coverage, nine-hour wear, and were blendable and easy to work with. I felt that the quality was consistent with past eyeshadows released by the brand.

CosmiK

CosmiK is a light-medium, peachy copper base with flecks of cooler pink-to-violet shifting sparkle. It had good color coverage but had to be built up, applied with a fingertip or applied with a dampened brush to get to full opacity–the base pigment seemed more translucent. The texture felt dense without being overly thick that it became difficult to pick up, so it remained easy to apply and use overall. It stayed on nicely for nine and a half hours before creasing faintly.

They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Venomous Void

Venomous Void is a medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture was finely-milled, velvety, and more substantial so I didn’t experience fallout, but there was a touch of kick up in the pan when I worked with the color. It lasted well for nine hours on me before fading visibly.

It had opaque color coverage that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out well along the edges without losing its intensity. Smoked Amethyst is a blackened purple base with flecks of fine, purple and red pearl throughout. The texture was lightly creamy, dense but not too firmly pressed into the pan, so it wasn’t stiff to work with and still picked up well with a brush. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation in a single pass, which applied evenly and blended out without issue. It stayed on well for 10 hours before showing signs of wear.
