Cool Mattes 2 (11)

Viseart Cool Mattes 2 (11) Eyeshadow Palette ($80.00 for 0.84 oz.) is a new, updated take on Cool Mattes featuring a slew of smokier, cooler hues ranging from cool beige to cool violet. The formula on the mattes felt denser and a bit more substantial compared to past Viseart mattes, and in a way, they did seem more pigmented and swatched as well as they tended to apply on the lid, but some of the shades darkened noticeably on my lid and made it harder to apply them evenly, blend them out, or otherwise retain definition between shades due them darkening so much at times. I would recommend applying this over a primer and using a thicker, heavier layer of primer or concealer that has been powdered over.

They took a bit more effort to use together for a cohesive, more blended look than other Viseart mattes have for me in the past (often, Viseart mattes apply better than they swatch, but this palette seemed more consistent between swatches and actual application). I think that when combined with other shades (particular some shimmers), they’ll be easier to use together, too. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the original Cool Matte palette and the Cool Mattes 2 palette.

Cool Mattes 2 #1 is a cool, off-white with a matte finish. It had a smooth, slightly dense and lightly powdery texture that gripped better to bare skin and yielded opaque coverage in a single layer. There was a bit of dustiness, so it was best applied in a patting and pressing motion, then buffed afterward. It wore well for eight hours on me.

Cool Mattes 2 #2 is a muted, medium beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin. The texture was soft, a smidgen dusty in the pan, but it was easy to work with and blended out beautifully on my lid. It lasted for eight hours on me before fading.

Cool Mattes 2 #4 is a soft, light-medium lavender with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation with a drier, more powdery texture that was prone to sheering out on the lid. It was really hard for me to get pigmentation out of this, even building it up over primer and using it wet. It lasted for six and a half hours on me.

Cool Mattes 2 #9 is a medium-dark, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that was just a smidgen powdery in the pan, but it applied well in practice. It lasted for eight hours before fading a bit on me.

It had semi-opaque, buildable color payoff that applied somewhat evenly to bare skin but took extra effort to blend and even out on my lid, even over primer. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.

The color payoff was nearly opaque in a single layer, though the texture was more prone to sticking unevenly to bare skin and darkening when applied (without a primer, it appeared almost navy). It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Cool Mattes 2 #12 is a medium purple with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had medium pigmentation that was buildable to mostly opaque coverage with two to three layers, but the texture was drier and somewhat powdery, so there was fallout to contend with during application. It had a tendency to sheer out a bit, so I really had to pat and pack it on to get opaque, even coverage. I tried it over eyeshadow primer, and it didn’t appear quite as saturated on my lid as it did in the pan. This shade lasted nicely for eight hours on me before fading.
