Spellbound

Stila Spellbound Shade Mystere Liquid Eyeshadow ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) has a translucent, blackened base with some lighter purple glitter. There was no shift, just iridescent sparkle–sort of a bluish-white and purple effect but no shift. It had sheer coverage, which applied unevenly and looked patchy due to the base adding shadow and depth to the area, so it tended to recede my eye when I tried to use it on the inner corner/lid. It was very watery, thin, and took longer to dry down, which resulted in the product getting into fine lines and it seemed like the watery base congregated around the the glitter, so made my skin look shriveled up regardless of whether I used it on the lid or on my lash line. It was hard to build it up beyond medium coverage, and it fell off in chunks within six hours of wear.

Per the brand, it's supposed to be a "magically-transformative liquid eyeshadow" that has "color-flip pigments" that give it a "unique, color-changing, megawatt finish." It is supposed to be "long-wearing" with "minimal fallout." There's no specific callout about coverage level, but the brand's swatches shown fairly pigmented skin swatches and then opaque coverage on their model eye swatches.

A lot of the shades had a translucent, almost sooty black base, which resulted in them not working well to brighten, which often glittery products like these would be used for--and the sheerness of them made them even more likely to be used to pop on top of other shades or used in the inner tearduct to add extra oomph. They were very watery, and some shades require more "mixing" prior to application (which was hard to do on the applicator, so a separate brush would be best) or else they go on unevenly. I did not detect "color-flip" or shift with the majority of shades; they were sparkly, glittery, and/or metallic, so they had some shine and twinkle, but shift? Not so much.

They were very sheer, and they did not build up well, regardless of whether I used the included applicator, separate brush, or fingertips, and I always made to sure to let it dry down fully prior to doing so. The product was wet enough for long enough that it had a tendency to get into creases and fine lines, which yielded a patchier, more uneven application than intended. I don't know what purpose these are serving in Stila's line except to make me question future quality of these types of products, as their Glitter & Glows are very, very similar but tend to be much better performing.

Stila Mythical Shade Mystere Liquid Eyeshadow ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a pale lavender with subtle, warm undertones and cooler pink and violet glitter. Again, there was no visible shift, just a mix of color in the glittery bits. It had sheer coverage, which was somewhat buildable to medium coverage when applied in three or four layers using a brush and ensuring total dry down. Unfortunately, the more one layers on, more likely the fallout seems to be (and more layers results in larger chunks of glitter cascading into one’s eye for a very unpleasant, tearful, and red-the-next day kind of experience).

Stila Mystic Shade Mystere Liquid Eyeshadow ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) has a blackened brown, translucent base with flecks of teal, blue, and green glitter. I almost want to say it had a shift, but again, the base didn’t change, and the glitter just looked like a mix of colors rather than shifting from one color to another. The consistency was very watery, thin, and it took longer to dry. As it dried down, it moved slightly, settled into any fine lines/creases, and had a tendency to accentuate skin texture (almost made my lid look shriveled). It had sheer coverage, which did not build up well, and it applied unevenly due to the blackened base. It lasted for five hours before chunks of product dropped off my lid.

Stila Psychic Shade Mystere Liquid Eyeshadow ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) has a translucent, black base with medium blue glitter. It had sheer coverage, which did not build up well, paired with a watery, thin base that did not apply product well. I have no idea why they’d ever suggest using the included applicator–the product doesn’t mix well together, and it over-applies the product to the point where it clumps up and gathers in lines and creases. Applied with a fingertip, most of the glitter stuck to my fingertip and a bruised-like appearance was present on my lid from the blackened base. With a brush, it had some application, but it was uneven, patchy, and chunky in look and feel. It migrated as it dried down, which just made it look like I was crying glitter (and given how much fallout and movement this formula had, maybe I was crying real tears a little bit, too).
