Becca Star Child (2) Light Shifter Finishing Veil ($34.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a light-medium, peachy brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had sheer coverage, so it did tint and show up noticeably on my skin (as it was not my shade), but I would expect this shade to work for light-medium to medium complexions.

This was the first shade I bought from the range, as I thought it would suit my coloring, but it was too dark by a few shades, so you won’t find me wearing it above, since that wouldn’t make sense, but I did apply and test it out nonetheless (in person, where nobody but hubby could see me!). The powder initially had a smoother, silky consistency but a firmer press, so it wasn’t powdery, which I liked, but it developed hard pan quickly.

The hard pan made it harder and harder to pick up product and rendered it useless after a few uses. I had to use a paper towel to rub away that hardened layer to bring it back to life, which meant product waste and an extra step to use it.

Ignoring the hard pan problem (which isn’t minor!), the powder itself did have a satin finish that softened and smoothed out my skin. It applied evenly and diffused well without lifting up base products or turning patchy/caky in places. When applied over my base, it extended the wear of it by an hour and a half.

Becca Scattering (1) Light Shifter Finishing Veil ($34.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a light, pale yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a satin finish. For the purposes of swatching, I heavily built up the left swatch to give a better idea of color, as it was a sheer powder–as marketed–and would have been difficult to see against my skin tone otherwise!

The powder itself lived up to a lot of its claims; it set my makeup in place, produced a satin-like finish, which added some life back to a more matte base or helped to tamp down dewiness of a more luminous base, and extended the wear of my makeup by an hour to an hour and a half. It never looked powdery, and it didn’t lift up my base nor cake up with higher coverage foundations.

The issue I had was in trying to use the product over time as it developed hard pan very readily, and when using powder to set, often a liquid or cream base, there will be transfer of some of the base to the setting powder’s pan over time. I had to use a paper towel to rub off the hardened surface periodically in order to keep using the product, so that resulted in wasted product and an extra step that really should be unnecessary.

It's supposed to be a "weightless setting powder" that has a "filtering effect" and "satin finish." The coverage was supposed to be "sheer," which I'd agree with, but it had enough coverage that the wrong shade did visibly change the undertone or depth of my skin, and it was better to err on the lighter side than going too dark in my experience.

I felt like it worked well when I was able to pick up product, but the product was more firmly-pressed into the pan and seemed to get firmer and firmer with subsequent use. It really ate up any oils, creams, liquids, etc. that transferred onto my brush. It's not uncommon to get traces of one's liquid or cream-based foundation when using setting powder, so I was disappointed that the powder was so reactive. I had to use a paper towel to rub off the surface to loosen the powder back up to be able to pick up product with my brush.

Ignoring the texture issue, when the powder was applied to my skin, it did have a satin-like finish, so it could add more of skin-like finish if used over a more matte base and tamp down the shine of a dewier base (like the coordinating Dewing Tint). It applied evenly, didn't turn cakey or look powdery on my skin, and it did extend the wear of my base by an hour or so.

Guerlain Electric Pearl Meteorites Pearls ($65.00 for 0.80 oz.) is a soft, translucent peach with fine copper micro-sparkles and finer, champagne pearl. It’s the newest limited edition release in the Meteorites Pearls range, and this holiday’s edition is supposed to “create a halo of radiance” with a “subtle harmony of gold and copper pearls” that “counter a dull complexion” while the “champagne and white pearls reflect the light.” It is a more sparkly version in Meteorites, so if seeing visible sparkle on your skin is a deal-breaker, you’ll want to give this a miss. I could see if working as a subtle highlighter on cheeks if desired, and when packed on enough, I could get the faintest hint of color on my skin.

As a finishing powder, it added subtle luminosity all-over my face without making me look powdery, and it did not change my skin tone or coloring. I do find the effect is subtle enough that it is more noticeable in person and in harsher light (studio lighting is more forgiving, so the finishing powder doesn’t do as much lifting). The Meteorite Pearls didn’t impact the longevity of my base in either direction. I felt like I saw the light being reflected and some brightening of my overall complexion, but it was a subtle effect as usual.

I noticed that this year’s edition did not include any pouf or foam round on top the pearls, so mine arrived rather dusty. They are floral-scented.

Laura Mercier Translucent Medium Deep Loose Setting Powder Glow ($38.00 for 1.00 oz.) is a soft, medium-tan with warm undertones and a medium, golden sheen. It had sheer to semi-sheer coverage when applied with a powder brush and dusted all-over my face (which isn’t shown, as this shade isn’t intended for my skin tone but those deeper than I, please refer to my Translucent review for an idea of the effect of the powder all-over). It was buildable, like the lighter shade, so I applied it more heavily to show how it looks on my skin and to make it clear that this isn’t a subtly, luminous powder either.

The powder felt smooth, silky, and was very finely-milled, which made it easy to apply all-over to set my base makeup but could also be built-up to act more as a light to moderate highlighter. It sat well on my skin, but it wasn’t as blurring/smoothing compared to the original powder, which is more mattifying. The slight sheen it gave all-over was visible to my eye, which may or may not be your cup of tea. If you’re someone who tends to like a dewy, very glowy base, then it might be a good fit. I found this powder worked better to complement the more mattifying original powder. It extended the wear of my base products by two to four hours, depending on the formula, environmental conditions, and how heavy (or sheer) the application of. I would say it typically made my base wear well for between 10 and 14 hours.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Glow ($38.00 for 1.00 oz.) is a pale, yellowed powder with a golden sheen. It had sheer coverage when dusted all over my face (as a setting powder), but it had enough shimmer and was buildable that I was able to apply it as a highlighter on my cheekbones, just to give you a better idea of how much of a sheen this can add to the skin.

The powder was finely-milled and silky to the touch, which helped it apply all-over my face to set my base. Depending on the formula, how much of that formula I applied, and what I did that day, the wear ranged between 10 and 14 hours of solid wear out of my base (as compared to 7 to 12 hours without). I did not find that it was as good as smoothing on my skin’s natural texture and pores as the original Loose Setting Powder (which I love), but it did sit well on my skin and did not make my foundations appear cakey.

It yielded a noticeable sheen wherever I applied it; not really a subtle glow but light to moderate with faintly visible pearl if I looked closely, which I know can be a deal-breaker for some. I preferred using the Glow powder on the high points of my face and underneath my eyes but preferred the original for the rest of my face.

The formula is supposed to give a "glow finish" while setting makeup for "up to 12 hours" in two shades--Translucent and Medium Deep. It is described as having "sheer coverage" that "blur the look of fine lines and imperfections." The powders have a silky, finely-milled quality and are sheer but neither is colorless, and I noticed that the Translucent darkened my foundation about half a shade overall (I'm about light to light-medium). Both shades deposit a soft, barely-there shimmer, but it's somewhat visible close-up, so they result in a good deal of luminosity when applied all-over. I found that I preferred the look of the original Loose Setting Powder for most of my face and using the Glow version on strategic areas for a candlelit glow as the original formula gave my skin a smoother, more pore-less finish than the Glow version.

The powder did help extend the wear of my foundation, and I'd agree that it definitely kept my foundation looking fresh for between 10 and 14 hours, depending on environment, formula, and how much foundation I applied (or didn't apply). In general, I would recommend this powder only for someone who likes a very dewy finish, doesn't mind visible pearl/sheen on the skin, and is light-medium or deeper (or doesn't mind a warming powder if one is fairer).

Charlotte Tilbury Medium (4) Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44.00 for 30.00 oz.) is a light-medium beige with warm, golden undertones and a luminous sheen. This was the least warm-toned shade that I’ve swatched within the formula, so I could see it being more versatile across undertones as a result. The texture was smooth, lightweight, thin, and fluid without being watery (more like a cross between water and gel), which helped it blend well with moisturizer, primer, or foundation or be spread across larger areas (like all over the face). The doe-foot applicator made getting just a touch out easier for highlighting the high points of the face, though it was less useful for getting product for mixing in.

It worked well all-over the skin for a dewier finish that paired well with buildable coverage foundation (full coverage often covered the effect too much), strategically applied to high points of the face (either before or after foundation), and as a primer to help base products go on more smoothly. As a standalone highlighter, this shade stayed on well for eight and a half hours.

The formula is supposed to be a "customizable complexion booster" that can be used as a primer, highlighter, or mixed with base products. The line includes seven shades, like a more typical foundation or concealer range, but they have sheerer coverage and fine pearl, so there is some flexibility, though for added luminosity (but not altering color) all-over, one would want to choose a shade closer to their actual skin tone.

It has a jumbo-sized, doe-foot applicator, which I preferred for spot highlighting and priming but isn't as functional for mixing in with base products (compared to a pump). I find that the lighter shades look very similar when mixed with foundation or layered under it, so the shade range is more flexible than it might seem (for some skin tones).

The texture was smooth and lightweight, like a thin gel-based primer in feel, so the product easily spread across my skin for an all-over application (worn as primer, per the brand), and it made my skin look radiant. I can see one person finding that finish to look "oily," and another person to feel like it looks beautifully glowing--it's definitely very radiant on its own, so I'd recommend strategically applying it over bare skin, like a very diffused highlighter, or mixing it in with moisturizer if you're someone who wants glow but not full-on dewiness.

I also liked to gently swiped the product on using the included doe-foot applicator on the high planes of my face, diffused and blended (over a greater area than I would have if using it specifically to highlight my cheekbones) and gently dabbed foundation over it. I recommend using a sheer to medium coverage foundation over something full coverage, because full coverage will work better when it's mixed in otherwise the coverage level will tamp down the luminosity quite a bit.

As a standalone highlighter, it gave me a lit-from-within-glow that was luminous but not tacky or truly glossy, just looked dewy on my skin. It worked as well over bare skin as it did blended on top of foundation for me. On its own, it lasted well for nine hours with minimal fading and no migration as a cheek highlighter. As a primer, it seemed to help my makeup go on more smoothly but I didn't notice any extension of wear (but no shortening either); though the brand made no claim about it extending longevity, only that it would improve the finish and give skin a glow (so I didn't rate it down for not extending the wear).

Charlotte Tilbury Tan (5) Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44.00 for 1.00 fl. oz.) is a medium yellow with a warm, golden sheen and strong, warm undertones. I’d consider the shade to be more on the “medium” to “medium-tan” side of the spectrum over “tan.” It’s a very flexible and versatile product, though, so when sheered out and spread across the skin for all-over priming or mixed in with base products, it will definitely stretch across more skin tones. It should add some warmth, though it may be far too yellow for some complexions. I wish it was a bit more neutral or slightly rosier compared to the color for greater versatility across undertones.

I’m light to light-medium, and I can get away with wearing it as a targeted highlighter, which adds slight warmth, or sheered out along the perimeter of my face for a slightly bronzed, warmed-up effect. The consistency is thin, gel-like, and smooth with a lightweight feel that spread well across my skin, mixed nicely with moisturizer and foundation, and worked well patted on top of skin (bare or with foundation) as a standalone highlighter.

It’ll be key to pick a foundation without full coverage if you want to layer this product underneath it or else the foundation will cover the majority of the effect (if using full coverage, I’d recommend mixing it in with the foundation or applying in top, as it’s still drying, and gently dabbing and blending on high points).

For me, it wore well for eight and a half hours on my cheeks as a standalone highlighter. As a primer, it helped my makeup go on more smoothly and gave the end result a dewier, more luminous finish (but not oily); it didn’t lengthen or shorten the wear (but didn’t claim to lengthen).

Charlotte Tilbury Light/Medium (3) Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44.00 for 1.00 fl. oz.) is a light-medium, orange-leaning gold with warm undertones and a luminous, glowing sheen. This shade definitely had more depth than Fair or Light (both of which were more close in depth), so for all-over use and mixing, it should be most appropriate for light to medium skin tones. I’m light to light-medium, and it warmed up my natural skin tone but not in a way that felt like I had just self-tanned, so I could get away with using this shade all-over for a slightly warmer look overall.

As a standalone highlighter, it gave a dewy, luminous sheen that was a pinch warm but not orange against my skin tone, which I was happy to see as the swatch had me concerned! The texture was smooth, lightweight, and spreadable with a thinner, gel-like feel that was emollient enough to slide well over skin but absorbed quickly and mixed well with moisturizer and foundation without significantly altering their texture or application. It applied well over my bare skin as well as patted on top of foundation. For more targeted application, I like using my fingertips, as I just find I get the best blend and least chance of movement in base products (in general, across liquid and cream formulations).

I also liked taking this particular shade along the perimeter of my face (like a bronzer), diffusing with fingertips or a lightly dampened sponge, and then layering foundation. It wore well for eight and a half hours well as a standalone highlighter, and as a primer, it didn’t extend the wear that I could tell, but it didn’t shorten the wear either and definitely made my skin appear a bit smoother and glowier, just as it was marketed to do as a primer.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to be a "customizable complexion booster" that can be used as a primer, highlighter, or mixed with base products. The line includes seven shades, like a more typical foundation or concealer range, but they have sheerer coverage and fine pearl, so there is some flexibility, though for added luminosity (but not altering color) all-over, one would want to choose a shade closer to their actual skin tone.

It has a jumbo-sized, doe-foot applicator, which I preferred for spot highlighting and priming but isn't as functional for mixing in with base products (compared to a pump). I find that the lighter shades look very similar when mixed with foundation or layered under it, so the shade range is more flexible than it might seem (for some skin tones).

The texture was smooth and lightweight, like a thin gel-based primer in feel, so the product easily spread across my skin for an all-over application (worn as primer, per the brand), and it made my skin look radiant. I can see one person finding that finish to look "oily," and another person to feel like it looks beautifully glowing--it's definitely very radiant on its own, so I'd recommend strategically applying it over bare skin, like a very diffused highlighter, or mixing it in with moisturizer if you're someone who wants glow but not full-on dewiness.

I also liked to gently swiped the product on using the included doe-foot applicator on the high planes of my face, diffused and blended (over a greater area than I would have if using it specifically to highlight my cheekbones) and gently dabbed foundation over it. I recommend using a sheer to medium coverage foundation over something full coverage, because full coverage will work better when it's mixed in otherwise the coverage level will tamp down the luminosity quite a bit.

As a standalone highlighter, it gave me a lit-from-within-glow that was luminous but not tacky or truly glossy, just looked dewy on my skin. It worked as well over bare skin as it did blended on top of foundation for me. On its own, it lasted well for nine hours with minimal fading and no migration as a cheek highlighter. As a primer, it seemed to help my makeup go on more smoothly but I didn't notice any extension of wear (but no shortening either); though the brand made no claim about it extending longevity, only that it would improve the finish and give skin a glow (so I didn't rate it down for not extending the wear).
