Sparkling Red

Chanel Sparkling Red Rouge Coco Gloss ($30.00 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is a muted, raspberry red with pink and gold sparkle. It had semi-sheer to medium coverage–enough that there was a noticeable tint to the lips but the natural lip color came through quite a bit. The shimmery bits were definitely along the size of true sparkle, so I did feel them slightly as I wore the gloss, and there was a smidgen of color visible in my deeper lip lines (not truly noticeable from a normal viewing distance). The gloss portion felt smooth overall, though, and it was comfortable to wear over the three hours it lasted on me. The formula also seemed hydrating to me.

Editor’s Note: Sparkling Red appears not to exist in the Rouge Coco Gloss range. I’ve sent an email to Chanel to find out if Sparkling Red is a future shade or not the final name (and if not, then what is the final name).

The formula is supposed to have “intense shine, hydration” with a “gel-like texture” with shades that vary from “sheer to opaque” in coverage. The consistency has a smooth, lightweight texture that can feel more like a gel-like texture with some of the sheerer shades and more like a cream and gel hybrid with more opaque shades. It’s a formula that’s comfortable to wear with light tackiness that lasts anywhere from two to four hours and is hydrating over time. There was a strong, mirror-like shine across the shades that was very reminiscent of the prior Glossimer formula. There was a faint floral scent, and with some shades, I got a subtle taste of perfume. The doe foot applicator was more unique (at least, to me) with a very curved edge that was great for my bottom lip while flipping it gave me a more paddle-shaped edge that worked better for my top lip. I would love to see Chanel introduce color descriptions on their retail website, especially for a formula like this where there can be such a huge difference in pigmentation (and finish) from one shade to the next that isn’t obvious from a product photo.

Amuse Bouche

Chanel Amuse Bouche Rouge Coco Gloss ($30.00 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium pink-red with cooler undertones and a just a touch of gold sparkle. This was one of the more pigmented shades I tested, as it had semi-opaque coverage and with the brightness of the shade itself, very noticeable on. The consistency was smooth, gel-like, and a touch tacky but not thick or heavy on. The color could have applied more evenly, and there was a little bit of color that pulled into lip lines. The very glossy, high-shine finish made those issues less noticeable at a normal viewing distance, though. This shade lasted for four and a half hours on me and was moisturizing.

Chilli

Chanel Chili Rouge Coco Gloss ($30.00 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark red with cooler, blue undertones and fine gold pearl. It had semi-opaque color coverage that spread easily across the lips, but I still wish it had applied more evenly and stayed out of my lip lines. The glossier finish helped to camouflage both of those downsides to a degree. The texture was smooth, lightweight, and just a touch sticky. On me, the gloss wore well for four and a half hours and was hydrating.
