Bite Beauty #038 The Lip Pencil ($18.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a dark plum with subtle, warmer undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation, though not quite opaque, that applied with minimal tugging as the consistency was soft but not really emollient or slippery. The lip pencil was comfortable to use along the edges of the lips and took a bit more work to fill in for all-over coverage. This shade stayed on well for six hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. Bite Beauty recommends wearing this particular shade with Pepper, Rhubarb, or Sake; I think it would work well with Rhubarb (warmer) or Sake (lighter, cooler) — see comparison swatches.

The Lip Pencil formula is supposed to have “perfect, allover, opaque lip coverage” with a lightweight feel. I think the formula worked exceptionally well for lining the edges of the lips and keeping color on longer and more within the lines (e.g. a lipstick feathers on its own wouldn’t feather when layered over one of the lip pencils). Some shades worked well for filling in the lips for all over color, but some applied more unevenly or were less comfortable to fill in with. The consistency was soft, just barely creamy–almost more velvety than creamy–and oddly spreadable, as I found the best way to “even” out the coverage was to press my lips together, and while there was a touch of tackiness, the color almost always appeared more even after that than if I kept trying to maneuver and push the color around with the pencil itself. They do feel lightweight, and they lasted anywhere from five to six hours on their own. They weren’t spectacularly long-wearing as a standalone lip product, but they extended the wear of lipsticks by two to four hours.

The pigmentation was nearly opaque on the lips, and the color went on fairly evenly straight from the pencil. The texture was thin, a smidgen tacky but did not lift color when I pressed my lips together (that actually made the color appear more even). It wore well for six hours and was just a touch drying after four hours of wear. Bite Beauty recommends wearing this particular shade with Molasses; I think it would work well with Chai (lighter, warmer), Pepper (cooler, lighter), Nori (darker), or Liquorice (much darker) — See comparison swatches.

The texture seemed to have a little more creaminess to it than other shades, which made it more comfortable to use when applying color all-over the lips. This shade lasted for six and a half hours and was non-drying. Bite Beauty recommends wearing this particular shade with Nori, Verbena, or Chai; I think it would work well with Nori (warmer), Liquorice (darker), or Mistletoe (darker) — see comparison swatches.

It had semi-opaque color coverage that could have applied a bit more evenly on its own. I was able to smooth and even out the coverage by pressing my lips together, though, so it did not require too much finagling. The texture was thin, clingy, but it was, surprisingly, non-drying over the six hours it lasted for. Bite Beauty recommends wearing this particular shade with Whiskey or Liquorice; I think it would work well with Nori (warmer), Liquorice (slightly darker), or Mistletoe (redder) — see comparison swatches.
